Hey, guys and gals! It's been a long time but finally I am back. But since it's been so long, let's recap what happened so far:

Angra Mainyu decided to screw around with the Holy Grail System and summons heroes from alternative realities. But things get even more chaotic when more and more Servants appear. First, Saver, then Avenger, then Brawler as Saver's Servant and then a whole additional set, resulting in an Apocrypha-style war under the supervision of the Ruler-class Servant.
Again and again alliances are forged until all barring some minor exceptions are part of one of two big teams. Here are the teams with a small explanation for every Servant:

Team Red:

Kiritsugu - Saber of Red: Nura Rikuo, Grandson of Nurarihyon
Kayneth - Lancer of Red: the Reincarnation of Dracula with the skill Double Summon
Tokiomi - Archer of Red: an albino with crutch and vector manipulation
Waver - Rider of Red: a demon on two wheels having a Reality Marble filled with broken toys
Kirei - Assassin of Red: a shinobi using bugs
Kariya - Berserker of Red: Ichigo Kurosaki, Substitute Shinigami
Saver of Red - Brawler of Red: Kasukabe You, holding the Genome Tree
Volquart - Avenger of Red: Merry Nightmare, a demon without a Reality Marble
Akage - Saver of Red: Angra Mainyu, Spirit of Destruction, using supernatural books
Irisviel; Sola-Ui; Aoi; Rin; Maiya (deceased)

Team Black:

Death - Saber of Black: Perseus, Legendary Slayer of Dragons
Famine - Lancer of Black: a black-cloaked schemer able to venture into a different dimension
Pest - Archer of Black: a cowboy hiding his face behind a bird peak mask
Caster of Black - Rider of Black: a black knight without any visible body under his helmet
Sakura(forced)- Caster of Black: a snake-themed magi using Body Possession, arrow plates and Black Blood
Zouken - Assassin of Black: Zank the Beheader, a maniac with a third eye able to read minds
War - Berserker of Black: a demonic figure clad in blue flames
Dietlinde - Brawler of Black: a gentleman with curved eyebrows and goatee
Byakuya - Avenger of Black: Reki, a winged woman grounded by her sins
Jubstacheit - Saver of Black: Lucemon, the self-proclaimed savior of the digital world
Illyasviel(forced)

Unaffiliated:

Ryuunosuke - Caster of Red: a roman war painter
Ruler: a radiant knight in red armor
Risei (officially but sympathic towards Team Red)

Chapter 36: Of Traps and Baiting

"Liber Chaos (In the Beginning There Was Chaos)!" With a sound of shattering glass the bounded fields around the Einzbern castle broke.

"That takes care of that", Saver of Red said gleefully as he put away his book. Behind him where all the Masters and Servants of the red faction. That meant that while Kirei, Assassin and even Akage were here, Rin, Aoi, Sola-Ui and Irisviel were not. They actually had debated leaving some of the Masters behind. Especially Irisviel hadn't wanted Akage to tag along. But Akage was an even better magus than Kariya and if they left that guy behind, how would he know when to use his second Command Seal to fill up Berserker's prana after he wasted the first one? Not to mention that trying to keep him from going after Zouken was pretty much as promising as making Zouken surrender Caster to them: You would need the Holy Grail for that.

"He is here", the ninja brought Saver of Red out of his musings.

"So he is." The irregular Servant took out another book and closed it. At once the illusion of a Japanese priest around him faded and his cloak became visible for everyone.

"I see that you have decided to stop trying to win with deception, Angra Mainyu", greeted them Saber of Black as he walked out of the front door, his Master behind him.

"Mithras", Saver spit his name out. That was what he had feared but expected.

/*flashback*/

"So, everybody's ready?!", Saver asked into the room. He was standing at the front while everyone else had seated themselves at both sides. Lancer had actually created it for the sole purpose of negotiations between the different alliances in the war and thus could hold a considerable amount of people without getting crowded.

Even though he never actually planned it to be used for all participants in this Holy Grail War, he had still "build" it large enough to hold fifty people. Which made this one less than half full. And considering that the two children were already sleeping, there were even less seats filled. Not to mention that they had to ban Kariya from entering because with him having Zouken's familiars in him, allowing him entry would automatically cross out the secret in the "secret strategy meeting". At first Kariya had been rather reluctant to follow up with the decision though after telling him that this was probably what Zouken wanted, he had not needed any more arguments for staying away, so that Saver of Red could now actually get down to business:

"If no one has anything important to do that can't wait…" A banner unrolled itself behind him.

"… then let's start the 'Ahriman's Strategy Corner'!" Silence and sighs followed his declaration, with the occasional hand meeting the face of its owner. Though, special mention should go to Waver Velvet, as he was the only one raising his voice:

"It says 'Tiger Dojo'", the Master of Rider pointed out. Saver turned around.

"Oops, wrong one."

He ripped it down and in the blink of an eye put up another one saying: "Ahriman's Strategy Corner".

"Who was the idiot that had the idea to put you in charge again?!", Archer inquired annoyed, to which Saver laughed in response.

"No one", he admitted, "I just prepared everything and you went with it. After all, I am the owner of the Roman-Jewish Treaty (We Recognize your Might). Besides…"

Saying that, he wiped with his hand over a pig paper board and at once the names "Illya" and "Sakura" appeared.

"… High-Speed Writing at its best! So, why don't we skip the unnecessary stuff and just go ahead and first take a look our objective…" He pointed at the two names he had written on the board.

"…getting Illyasviel von Einzbern and Matou Sakura! Seriously, we couldn't have gotten something easier, could we?" He put an outline in the shape of a cup around Illyasviel and an "eight" above her.

"Illya is Acht's vessel for the Lesser Grail, in other words, he needs her to get the Holy Grail. So, he's bound to keep her under close watch. Sakura is currently the body for Caster of Black." He made a circle around her name and wrote "Caster" above her. Interestingly to note, while he had written everything else in the same dark blue color, the name of the Servant was black.

"And for that reason the only one who can defeat her without killing Sakura is Saber of Red!" He wrote the class name in red onto the board and drew an arrow from him to Caster.

"But the real problem is, the enemy knows this, too. Usually I would be able to help in this situation, however…" He wrote "Saber" in black and "Saver" in red and drew an arrow from his opponent towards his class title.

"…I can use none of my books while he is in the vicinity. Since the enemy knows this, the possibility of sending Saber of Black to deal with Saver of Red…" He looked at them with a serious expression.

"…is 100 percent! Thus the best I can do is keep him at bay, while you charge forward. In other words: a distraction. However…" Saver smiled sinister.

/*flashback interruption*/

"Why should I waste prana for some Noble Phantasm, when I know, they won't be of any help at all?!", Saver of Red snorted.

"Indeed", acknowledged Saber of Black, "this is exactly what I would have expected from you, Angra Mainyu!"

Saver took out his katana.

"You guys go ahead, while I and Shirou take care of this."

"My name is Akage!"

"Whatever."

"Don't die on us", Berserker of Red said before taken his leave.

"If you die, can I get your Master?", Brawler of Red asked her own Master.

"You shouldn't joke about that!", Avenger of Red criticized the Servant of the Fist but Saver waved her interjection away.

"Na, I don't mind. Sure, go ahead, it's not like I need a Master once I am dead." Brawler nodded in acknowledgement and went with the others.

"Oj, magus killer", Saver stopped the last one of his allies before it was too late, "if I am going back and you're not with me, I'm going to be really pissed." Kiritsugu didn't even dignified this with a response as he went inside the castle and let the door shut behind him.

"Now then…" Saver turned to face his adversaries. "Shall we begin?"

"Are you really going to keep your Master by your side?", Death asked the irregular Servant. "Even when your opponents are a dead apostle and a Servant with a great advantage over you?" Saver smiled and grabbed his sword tightly.

"You don't give us enough credit! Shall I show you, just what I can actually do without my abilities connected to 'Angra Mainyu'?!"

/*flashback continuation*/

"…they underestimate my ability to serve as a distraction! Right, Berserker? How good do you think I am with just the sword and my '3D-maneuver gear'?"

"3D-what? Oh, you mean your shoes… now, I have to admit, your swordplay is not too shabby, enough to hold your own against me for a while… but do you think this will be enough against Saber of Black?! I noticed that you never used Runes after he sealed your Noble Phantasms."

"So, you noticed that, huh?", mused Saver and he sighed. "And here I thought you were all brawns and no brains. But you are right. Rune Magic, High-Speed-Incantation and even the High-Speed Writing I am currently using are skills I gave myself with the Kitāb ʾalf layla wa-layla (One Thousand and One Nights). I can't use them against Mithras." Saver smirked.

"Luckily for us, Saber is really proud of being a hero. His Servant skill is called Mentality-Impeding Fame for a reason. Proud people do stupid things, like not using their full power against a weaker opponent. He will not let himself defeated by Angra Mainyu, but unless he is really pressed, he won't use his full power against his foe! Which means, it's perfect for stalling! Wouldn't you say?"

/*flashback end*/

Leaving Saver of Red and his Master Akage behind, the rest made its way into the big entry hall.

There they were greeted by one person or rather, one vampire.

"So, who of you wants to be the first to get killed by me?!", the fake Sakoshimo, whose real name was War according to Saver of Red, shouted boldly, a blood-red axe in his right hand, as his Servant materialized next to him, surrounded by a storm of blue flames, roaring madly.

Before even one of them could say anything, Rider of Red raced forward on screeching wheels.

"▀██▀██▄▀█▀▄█▀", Berserker shouted, rushed forward and swung his sword at her. A wave of blue fire flew at her, but without looking away from her enemy she circled around it and slashed at the mad Servant, who brought up his katana just in time to block her attack.

"Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiideeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!", wailed Waver which made the fake Sakoshimo laugh in response.

"Looks like your Servant already decided for you, doesn't it?!"

"That is not it", analyzed Kiritsugu with the help of the Master's Clairvoyance. "It is his skill Demon Child."

"Interesting", commented Kirei. Demon Child. A skill given to those whose mothers at one point between their fertilization and birth had been possessed by demons. A skill that would make demons in the vicinity be drawn towards the hero in question. But what was most astonishing was its high rank of A. Not the effect one would have at this high rank. It just increases the allure towards demons to tremendous extents. It would be a rather sought-after skill for Exorcists and it would make it impossible for demons like Rider of Red to disengage from him, but as far as skills of Heroic Spirits went, this was nothing really great. Even if he had to admit that it would complicate things, if they had achieved their objective before Rider of Red and Berserker of Black had finished their fight, one way or another.

No, what really was astonishing was how he got to this high rank. As this rank his mother had not just been possessed for the entire duration of the pregnancy, but the fertilization itself had been a product of the demon, too. In other words, it would not be wrong to call him a half-demon.

"We have to go", Kiritsugu reminded them.

Theoretically they could all team up on Berserker of Red and his Master and quickly neutralize them, but that would make the complete Team Black engage them together. Even if they managed to take out the mad Servant before they all reached this place, if it came down to an all-out war, their team would be at a big disadvantage. They had four dead apostle with blood resonance, Saver of Red could not use his Noble Phantasm thanks to Saber of Black, the only ones who they knew for certain could hurt Rider of Black were Avenger of Red, whose Noble Phantasm was completely useless in this situation and Rider of Red, who as it now turned out, would not fight against anyone else as long as Berserker of Black was still around. Assassin of Black could read minds and Caster of Black could cover the entire floor with those Vector Plates of hers.

Yes, from an impartial point of view, fighting against them head-on would be akin to suicide. This of course raises the question, why would Team Black not just do it? Why wouldn't they greet them with their full force and instead accommodate by choosing to fight them one on one?

There were three possible reasons for that:

First, no sane magus would jump into a trap if they could not think of a way to escape from it. And that was essentially the situation right now. A trap with Ilya and Sakura as the bait. They knew it was a trap and the black alliance knew they knew and so purposely gave them a chance so that they would not back down.

Second, a full-blown out war was a lot less predictable than small separated duels. Even if they were stronger overall, there was no telling, which one of them they took out in return. Not even Saver of Red was capable of predicting the course of a full-out war. A stray bullet, friendly fire, collapsing architecture… there were a number of things that in a war could go wrong. And regardless of whether you'd march with an armed force of hundred trained soldiers against one thug, as long as he could fire first, he could kill one of your soldiers.

In standard warfare this would not be a problem. In the greater scheme of things, a leader would not care much about any foot soldiers that got killed. Sure, they might feel sadnass that one person died but they would not feel sadness that this person died, unless they knew the person themselves. But for this one person it was over. And no member of the black coalition wanted to be that one person.

Third, the members of the red team had a lot more experience fighting with each other than any members of the black team did. They have been summoned more than a week before and used this time to battle each other again and again. They knew each others abilities and fighting styles better than any of Team Black did with maybe Caster as an exception. So, if they fought in an all-out brawl, the black group had a higher chance of friendly-fire than the red, increasing the chance that they would loose someone in the confusion by opportunistic red attacks.

One of those reasons or, as they had guessed, a combination thereof was responsible that instead of meeting them head-on they decided to break up into smaller groups and counter their respective groups with their own.

Yes, in the end the results of this raid would not come down to which alliance was stronger, but who had underestimated their opponent less.

"Are you going to be okay?", Avenger asked Waver concerned who laughed dryly.

"I don't have much of a choice, do I?"

"Be careful", Brawler told him before they all sped away into different directions as if letting fate decide their destiny.

"You don't give us enough credit!", Saver of Red said to his opponent, Saber of Black. "Shall I show you, just what I can actually do without my abilities connected to 'Angra Mainyu'?!"

"By all means, show me", Saber of Black responded, "let me renew my legend of me defeating you!"

"Well, technically you never really defeated me. The legends just tell about you beating up my creation Aži Dahāka (Evil Dragon of the World's End). And that's not even true. You just helped Fereydun do the job. It's totally unfair that's enough for your Hero of Legends to work. Heck, you even got Fereydun's weapon, Barmāyeh (Ox-Headed Mace), out of it. Seriously, and people accuse me of being the cheater when you are just a complete hack!"

"Very well", conceded Saber, "I will not use Barmāyeh (Ox-Headed Mace) against you! I will prove that I am superior to you, without relying on the weapons giving to me by the human!"

Death, who had listened to the conversation quietly, sighed. Well played, Angra Mainyu, well played. Regardless, two could play at that game…

"If I may interrupt", he spoke up, redirecting the attention of the Servants towards himself, "there is something I would like to ask Saver of Red before you engage into combat, something that intrigues me to no end."

"Please go ahead and ask, I'll allow it."

"Shouldn't I be the one to say that?", Saver asked, sounding somewhat annoyed. "Well, it's not like I have a problem with you asking some questions, so I'll follow Mithras' lead. If I answer the question, though, that's a different story."

"I have but one question: Where did you bury Akage's parents?"

"What?", asked Akage before Saver even had a chance to respond. In disbelief the boy turned to face his Servant.

"What is he talking about?", he demanded to know. "What does he mean?!"

"Honestly?", replied Saver. "I have no idea. I'll usually don't go around burying people…"

"So that explains why I couldn't locate their bodies", Death concluded, "you fed them to your monsters!"

"What?!", Akage shouted, tears in his eyes. "Why, Saver, why did you did that?!"

"Just what I would expect from you Angra Mainyu", Saber of Black acknowledged and took out his Harpe (Immortal Slaying Scythe). "I shall slay you were you stand to lessen the mourning of this child!"

"Now wait just a moment!" Saver held his hands defensively in front of him. "I call bullshit on that one! It's literally impossible for me to kill them! I've got a geis, remember?!"

"So, you claim your geis does not only stop you from killing children? Then how do you explain the fact that not even their own parents could remember them? The only reason I can think of would be erasing their complete existence, aren't I right?"

"Nope, you are completely wrong. If I had really used the Fourth Magic Oblivion, Akage wouldn't even exist right now." Death's eyes widened.

"You know what the Fourth True Magic is?!", he asked full of disbelief. "I thought only the fourth magician himself knows its title and domain!" Saver just shrugged it off.

"Perks of being a Heroic Spirit", he announced, "now, as I was saying, I didn't use some fancy Magic to erase their existence. Well, maybe some fancy magic but not magic in the sense of Magic with a capital 'M'. The spell I used to hide them was pessach, which I got with The Sword of Moses (God's Volk). It makes it literally impossible for anyone trying to harm a person to find something out about that person. Take that, Dumbledore! Mine's a lot better!

Back on topic, when I say anything, I mean anything. Which is why for you it looks like the person doesn't exist anymore. Though I actually thought it has gotten destroyed when you activated your Hero of Legends against me. Curious. I wonder why it's still active… maybe it's because it's a passive spell… no, can't be…"

"Then why did you not made contact with Akage's parents?", Death inquired. "If you thought your pessach was destroyed, why did you not made sure they were safe? Unless of course, they are not alive, anymore."

"I maybe did not personally decide to look after them", responded Saver, "but I did manage to convince someone else to do it."

"Who?", wanted Akage to know. Understandably, considering that was his family they were talking about.

"A guy who hates me with a passion", answered the irregular Servant, cracking a smile. "And he's such a goody-two-shoes that he cannot just look away when people are endangered thanks to my actions."

"I think this is enough talk", voiced Death as it became clear that he would not be able to sow discontent between Akage and his Servant. "My question has been answered. After all, it would not do for the others to come here and notice you still chatting with your enemy."

"Your words speak of wisdom", Saber acknowledged, "very well, Angra Mainyu, prepare yourself!"

"Right back at ya, Mithras!", Saver shouted, activated his winged shoes and rushed at his foe. With a loud "clank" his katana hit the scythe-like blade. What followed was a fast-paced exchange of blades as both tried to get past the defenses of their foe. Fast, almost as if in a hurry, Saver swung his sword again and again while Saber blocked each one of them downright gracefully.

Even though he had talked big in front of the others, this fight would be a lot more difficult than he had made it out to be. From the very beginning the irregular Servant was completely outclassed by the Knight of the Sword. Strength, endurance and dexterity, Saber was better in every singly one of them. And unlike Berserker of Red, Perseus, wearer of the Winged Sandals (Wings of Hermes) was used to aerial combat. Seriously, if it wasn't for his skill Acrobatics which brought at last their speed to near equal levels, he would have probably not even made a fun enough opponent to fight against. In other words, he would not have been able to even serve as a distraction. Damn, he wanted to die…

"Archer?!", Matou Byakuya exclaimed full of disbelief. "Why did Tokiomi and Archer had to be the ones to come here?!" The Master and Servant in question stared at their would-be enemy blankly. Under their stern gazes the Master of Avenger of Black could not help but to take a step back. And then another and another. Before he had stood slightly in front of his Servant, now he was nearly covering behind her with the back pressed against the wall.

"You'd better protect me, you stupid woman!", he demanded from Avenger, who was once again smoking.

"Sure", she responded emotionless, threw down the cigarette, put it out with her foot and held the broom combat-ready in front of her.

"Tch." Archer had taken a look around and wasn't impressed. He guessed they got points for choosing the battlefield, some kind of dining room with a lot of mundane objects like chairs, cupboards and statues, but the actions of the Master were really nothing that invoked respect. And regarding Avenger…

He activated the switch on the electrode and stomped onto the ground. What followed was a shockwave that turned every object in the room into smithereens.

The big table with the white tablecloth, the fancy chairs with the white and gold upholstery, the small white table with the small black statues, the crystal lambs on the walls, the clock on top of the mantelshelf, the mirrors, the cupboard with the tableware and even the chandelier on the ceiling, nothing was spared.

But it didn't work. Avenger of Black spun her broom around and knocked away all the shards that were threatening to come close to her. Though, most of them just missed her entirely. So, Tokiomi wondered why Archer took such measures? Shouldn't such an act just give her more objects to turn into Broken Phantasm? Even if they were now smaller, the sheer number of potential explosives raised concerns.

After that display of power, Archer turned around, walked towards the door they had came in and opened it.

"Archer?", his Master inquired surprised at his behavior and for a short moment the Knight of the Bow stopped.

"I am not needed here anymore", he calmly stated before closing the door behind him. All three inhabitants of the room looked dumbfounded at the empty space the Servant had occupied just moments before. So, destroying all furniture had been his goal all along? Archer wasn't one to do unnecessary things, so he would have followed a plan. Only which one?

Byakuya, too, couldn't believe what he was seeing. Did that Servant just left his own Master behind alone in a room with an enemy Servant-Master-pair?! Rage started to build up inside of him. They were mocking him! Their actions clearly said it: You are so weak, we don't even need a Servant to defeat you! Just one Master is going to be enough! That alone will suffice for the so called heir of the Matou family, who could not even produce an offspring with magic circuits! Such a failure would not need a Servant to defeat!

"Avenger!", he addressed his Servant. "Kill Tohsaka Tokiomi!"

"It seems we meet again, Emiya!", Jubstacheit von Einzbern greeted the freelancer he hired himself. Above him materialized his Servant, Saber of Black. One look at his face told all present, he had been itching for a fight.

"This is bad", noted Saber of Red, "we went the wrong way!"

'No, we didn't', thought Kiritsugu as his gaze fell behind the head of the Einzbern family. There, sleeping soundly on a couch in white nightgown, was Illyasviel von Einzbern. The couch was actually the only furniture inside this room. It seemed the old magus had prepared the room beforehand. So, they knew their goal.

"They won't let us leave without a fight", Kiritsugu told his Servant, "it would be best, if we finish here as fast as possible, so that we can move on." Saber of Red did not liked this one bit. He was the only one who could kill Caster of Black without killing Sakura, after all. Since he was occupied elsewhere, the one fighting Caster would have even more trouble. On the other hand Kiritsugu was right. He would not be able to go to Caster as long as Saver of Black had him in his sights.

He grabbed his Nenekirimaru (The Ancestral Shrine Round Cut Off) tightly. Of all the Servants to face off against, it had to be Saver, the one with the skill Counter Hero. The odds of defeating this Servant on his own and having enough time to go after Caster were really slim. It would most likely not be possible. Then for now he would concentrate of getting Illya back and surviving so that he could defeat Caster in their second raid. After all, Caster was still a valuable ally for Team Black. They would not just kill her.

"Welcome, my dear brother. Thank you for following my invitation", Dietlinde greeted the blind-folded magus. "I assume that this time you followed the code of honor and met me alone."

Volquart clenched his teeth. It was not like he had a say in that matter. If they wanted the enemy to play by their rules, they had to first play by theirs. So, when he had noticed the symbol of their family crest on the door, he had no choice but to accept the challenge.

"See for yourself", answered Volquart her question. He probably wouldn't be so adverse against a fair fight, if it wasn't for the fact that her Servant was vast superior in battle than his own. Well, hopefully they could stall them long enough for them to rescue the two girls. And if push came to shove, there was still the gift from Saver…

A/N:

Hi guys and gals.

Take note that I have no actual idea of warfare and thus strategies I come up with would probably not work in real life or under usual circumstances in the nasuverse. So, feel free to point out what doesn't make sense, but remember I am an author, not a fighter. Or strategist in this case. There is a reason why I decided against making Shikamaru the Assassin of Red.

Also, the fights depicted in this and the following chapters do not necessarily have to happen in this exact order with the exact same amount of time spend in each of them. There is a lot of fighting simultaneously and I sometimes decided to have an early fight be seen later for the purpose of story-telling.

Lastly, remember how I said I planned to publish the chapters of this arc in three to seven days-interval? Well, I looked at my chapters again and noticed that number 37 was actually just more of the same, mainly just setting up the playing fields. So I wondered: Is there any reason for me not to publish the next one? The answer I came up with was "no". So, rejoice! You're actually getting the second one right off the bat!
