"No" Alec shook his head with crossed arms.
"What do you mean with 'no'?" Magnus frowned at his boyfriend.
"We're not going." Alec said sternly. "We can't just go to this guy's home and demand to talk to him!"
"He did that to me on a coffee shop, why shouldn't I at his home?" Magnus glared at Alec.
"Because Magnus you had a breakdown a few days back and now you wanna go and put yourself in front of it all again?" Alec exclaimed "Hell no, I'm not letting you!"
"I didn't ask for your permission!" Magnus spat at Alec "I can go on my own…"
"Magnus-" Alec sighed but Magnus cut him off
"You told me you would be there for me" Magnus glared "But I can do it alone!"
And with that Magnus turned around and started marching towards his car. Alec sighed and noticed that everyone had joined them at one point and had heard at least part of the conversation. With a resigned groan Alec moved away from his car. He gave the keys to Jace and told him to drive to Clary's neighborhood and then he followed behind Magnus.
Magnus frowned when Alec climbed into the passenger's seat of his car, but he said nothing. He just turned his car on and then pulled out of the school's parking lot. He didn't say a word on the way to Clary's and Simon's neighborhood, and neither did Alec.
When Magnus parked the car outside Clary's driveway, the others were already waiting for them. Magnus climbed out of the car and Alec followed. They all met by Clary's porch.
"What's going on?" Max asked "Why are we here?"
"I just need to talk to someone" Magnus said "You don't have to be here if you don't want to"
With that he gave Alec a pointed look and then turned to Clary and Simon. Alec just rolled his eyes and sighed.
"Where does he live?" Magnus asked
"No-uh" Simon shook his head "We're not telling you until you explain what's going on"
"Fine" Magnus sighed "But not out here"
"You can all come inside" Clary said pointing at her house
They all nodded and walked inside Clary's house. Her mother was out so they were all alone in the big house.
"So…it's only your mom and you here?" Alec asked "I though Jonathan was your brother"
Magnus shuddered at the name of one of his tormenters. Even though they hadn't tried to hurt him physically lately, they still threw insults every chance they got. Magnus tried to ignore them, but they were very constant and always there. Magnus hated it.
"He…he doesn't live here" Clary said quietly "Not anymore at least…my parents divorced a few months back. I stayed with mom, Jonathan with dad"
"Oh…sorry to hear about that" Alec said softly
"It is better that way" Clary smiled, not really taking offense in any questions asked.
"You!" Izzy pointed at Magnus when they all sat down in the living room "Explain"
"Alright…so the other day a guy approached me on a coffee shop" Magnus explained quickly, trying not to get into much details "Apparently he's my step-brother"
"I thought you didn't have a family" Simon asked confused
"Not blood related, no" Magnus shook his head "At least, I thought I didn't until a few weeks back…look it's really complicated, but apparently my long-lost father has decided to make an appearance in my life again and he's brought his son into it"
"So…you have a brother now?" Max asked "A real brother?"
"The twins and Nick are more like my brothers than him" Magnus said "I do, however, want an explanation"
"And you think this Connor guy will have it?" Izzy asked
"I don't know…but I'm about to find out" Magnus nodded
"I don't think it is wise to just approach the guy" Alec cut in
"And we agreed I was going to do it anyways" Magnus frowned at his boyfriend
"We never agreed on that" Alec frowned back.
"Moving on!" Izzy called interrupting a fight from forming
"So we're talking to this guy?" Jace asked
"I don't think we should go and invade his house, though" Clary said.
"Well…you said he approached you before, right?" Izzy asked Magnus and he nodded in agreement "I've got the perfect plan then"
"I don't understand what we're doing" Magnus frowned at Izzy.
The group had settled on the park of the neighborhood. The park was exactly in front of Connor's new house, so they could spy on the house while pretending to be just a group of teenager hanging out in the park.
"We're not going to him" Izzy explain "he's coming for us"
"You really think he'll come here if he sees us?" Simon asked
"He'll come if he sees Magnus" Izzy said "He said he wanted to explain but Magnus ran off…if Connor sees him again, he'll try to talk to him again"
"Or he won't even try if he sees so many people" Jace pointed out
"He'll come" Magnus said confidently.
Alec was about to say something when he noticed a boy coming out of the house in front of the park. He was tall with perfectly tanned skin. His hair was blond and it shone against the sun. He was wearing a green polo shirt, skinny jeans and black converse. Alec straightened up and elbowed Jace, warning him of the boy who was now approaching them. Jace also straightened up and watched the boy carefully, calculating. Alec inched closer to Magnus. It didn't matter that he didn't agree with this. He was going to be there for Magnus no matter what.
"Magnus?" the boy called when he was close enough.
Magnus turned around in surprise. He looked at the boy once and his eyes widened slightly. He took a step back, closer to Alec, and searched blindly for his hand. Alec took his hand in his and intertwined their fingers for reassurance.
"Connor" Magnus nodded
"I'm surprised you remember my name" Connor grinned
"Not easy to forget when you claim to be my half-brother" Magnus said coldly.
"Yeah…about that" Connor said, nervously scratching the back of his head "Can we talk? ...alone?"
Magnus stared at Connor for a long time. The others stayed quiet, but got ready to act in case something happened. They all stared at Magnus, asking if it was alright to be left alone with him. Finally, Magnus nodded once and everyone started to walk away. They all got out of ear-shot, but still close enough to see them and act if anything happened. Alec was about to walk away but Magnus held tighter to his hand and didn't let go. Alec understood instantly and stepped even closer to Magnus.
"Uh…" Connor said looking pointedly at Alec
"Whatever you have to say you can say it in front of him" Magnus said firmly
"Then I guess we should introduce each other" Connor smiled "I'm Connor Bane"
"Alec Lightwood" Alec nodded "Magnus's boyfriend"
"Boyfriend?" Connor asked with raised eyebrows "D-Does that mean you…you're…"
"Gay?" Magnus asked coldly "Bisexual, actually….problem?"
"No!" Connor said quickly "Not at all!"
"So…you wanted to talk?" Magnus asked with an eyebrow raised
"Yes…last time you didn't let me explain" Connor said "And dude! Why the hell did you tell our father I went to see you?! It was supposed to be a secret!"
"You're hardly on the place to complain" Alec snapped "So mind your tone"
"Alec, darling, it's alright" Magnus whispered
"Wow…over-protective much?" Connor chuckled but silenced when Alec glared at him.
"I don't care if you get in problem with your father or not" Magnus said flatly "I want answers, and you're going to give them to me"
"What do you want to know?" Connor sighed
"How old are you?" Magnus asked
"I'm 16 years old" Connor answered
"Who is your mother?" Magnus asked
"Her name was Marie Anderson-Bane" Connor answered
"How many years have your parents been married?" Magnus continued
"Would have been 16 years in December" Connor answered "They married 4 months after I was born"
"Why did you move to California?" Magnus asked "I heard you lived in Chicago…"
"My mom died last year" Connor said "At the beginning of this year my father found out about you…so we moved here because he hoped to find you"
"Your father knew about me since before I was born" Magnus snapped "But he didn't care and he left!"
"No, you don't get it" Connor shook his head "He tried to find you before, but he couldn't"
"Bullshit!" Magnus cried
"No, hear me out!" Connor tried to explain
"Magnus" Alec said when Magnus was about to protest "Hear him out…you lose nothing with getting one side of a story, being true or not"
Magnus looked uncertain but nodded anyways. Connor smiled gratefully at Alec, but he received only a cold stare as a response. So Connor turned back to Magnus and continued to explain.
"I remember…I was only around 5 years old. My mom and dad were fighting. My mother claimed my father was seeing someone else, but my father said he wasn't…I later found out he was keeping an eye on your mother…When he found out that your mother died, he went to the place you used to live. He wanted to get to you before anything happened to you…he took me with him, but when we arrived your house had burnt down…the police said you were gone"
"What?" Magnus frowned "No…my house never burnt down!"
"It did" Connor nodded "We didn't know until this year…but after your father tried to kill you, he set the whole place in fire. When we arrived you had been taken to the hospital. No one knew a thing about you. You wouldn't wake up, your step-father was in jail…so they told us you were dead…My father couldn't take it and we moved to Chicago…It wasn't until this year that we found out you were alive! Apparently someone wanted to adopt you. You were still underage at that time, so my father had to sign some paperwork for the adoption to be valid...He wanted to find you afterwards"
"That still leaves too many holes in the story" Alec frowned.
Magnus found it too hard to talk. He shook his head, his eyes shining with tears and his throat closing up, making it harder to breath – let alone talk.
"That's what I know" Connor shrugged "My father may know the little details, but otherwise…"
"So you moved to California when you found where Magnus lived?" Alec asked
"After a long time searching in various foster houses we finally located him" Connor nodded "My father placed a petition to get back custody over Magnus so he wouldn't have to live in foster care anymore"
"I don't need another home" Magnus snapped suddenly with a glare "I'm alright with Karen and the kids! They're my family!"
"And we know that now" Connor said "But before…my father only wanted what was best for you"
"So why did you looked for Magnus on your own?" Alec asked frowning slightly
"Because…I was always an only child, and I had just lost my mother the year before and suddenly I found out I had a brother!" Connor said "Suddenly I found out there was more of my family…I wanted to meet him on my own in case something happened with my father and I never got the chance"
"I'm not sure I believe you" Magnus shook his head "T-There's just…too much"
"Yeah…I get it" Connor sighed "You should talk to dad, though…He can answer more of your questions than I can"
"He's not my dad" Magnus hissed.
"We're still your family" Connor insisted
"Blood does not mean family" Magnus snapped
"Alright…Alright" Connor raised his hands in surrender "It'll be harder than just looking out for you…"
"I wanna go home" Magnus murmured turning around and facing Alec
"Alright" Alec nodded wrapping his arm around Magnus's shoulders and turning to nod towards Connor "Thanks for your time, Connor"
"Magnus!" Connor called before they could leave "I just...can we meet again? I…I want to have a brother"
Magnus stopped from walking away but didn't turn to look at Connor. Alec kept his eyes trained on Magnus, unsure of what to do, so he waited for Magnus to make the move. They could either turn back around or walk away. With a shuddering breath, Magnus nodded.
"I study in Hanover High School" Magnus spoke, not turning around "You can find me there"
And with that the couple walked away and Connor walked back into his house, a small gracing his lips.
