The Gender-Swap Boot Camp Challenge: Wand
Rhonda let out a frustrated noise as her wand clattered against the wall behind her. Noelle gave her an encouraging smile as she walked around the red-head to pick it up.
"You'll get it eventually, Rhonda," the shorter girl said as she handed over the wand.
Rhonda accepted her wand before kneading her eyes with her palms. "Everyone else has gotten it by now, Noelle, even you." There was a pause before she removed one hand and sheepishly added, "No offense."
Noelle shook her head, waving off Rhonda's unintentional insult. They all knew Noelle was usually the slowest to get something in lessons, but she was surprisingly good during their DA meetings. "Maybe you need someone else to be your partner," she suggested.
Before Rhonda could ask who Noelle was thinking, the girl was already running off across the room to whisper into Harley's ear. The pair pointed at Rhonda as they spoke, causing the red-head's ears to tinge pink. Now even Harley knew she was having problems.
"Rhonda," Harley asked as she followed Noelle back over. "Noelle says you're having difficulties?"
Rhonda nodded as she waved her wand about. "I don't think I'm getting the wand movement properly," she said.
Harley watched her friend before she signalled to someone. "Herman, can you come here a moment?"
Rhonda's face paled. Did she have to call Herman over?
"Herman, can you switch partners with Noelle and help Rhonda with her wand work?" Harley asked.
Herman gave a short nod as he stepped closer to Rhonda, not noticing the slight blush on the girl's face as Harley and Noelle walked off.
"So, what are you doing wrong, Rhonda?" Herman asked as he turned to her.
Rhonda frowned. "Why do you think I have to be doing something wrong?" she asked, crossing her arms over her chest defensively.
Herman raised an eyebrow. "Because Harley said you needed help with your wandwork?"
Rhonda looked off, feeling a bit foolish. She shouldn't be acting like this. It was just Herman, right?
The brown-haired boy sighed before he said, "Show me what you're doing then."
Rhonda nodded, setting her feet apart as she raised her hand. "Expelliarmus," she said, waving her wand but nothing happened.
"Ah," Herman said, moving to stand behind the red-head, his chest close enough for Rhonda to lay her back. He placed his hand over hers, the faint smell of books and parchment filling Rhonda's nose as he said, "You need to had just one final flick at the end, that's all."
Rhonda had been so caught up by the smell that she hadn't heard anything he said. "What?" she asked.
"A final flick," Herman said, moving her hand with his to demonstrate. "Got it?" he asked as he left to stand across from her.
Though a bit disappointed by the boy's movement, Rhonda nodded. "Expelliarmus," Rhonda said, waving her wand and adding the flick at the end. A jet of white light flew out of her wand, knocking Herman's wand out of his hand.
"Excellent," the boy said. He came up and brought her in for a hug. "That was great, Rhonda."
"Yes, you are," Rhonda murmured, overwhelmed by the heavenly smell once more.
"What?" Herman asked, separating slightly to look into her face.
Rhonda's face grew hot as she said, "Yes, that was great." She quickly jumped out the boy's embrace and went to retrieve his wand. "Let's try again."
