99 Problems And Family Ain't One
Skon sat in the garden awaiting her return. After arriving home and learning of the late appointment from T'Kaian, he knew that what T'Lara had to report would impact their decision severely. He heard her footfall approaching the home, crunching across the graveled walkway and opening the gate. She appeared a few feet from him and stood in silence.
"Aduna, it is agreeable to see you again."
She paired her fingers to his and looked into his lovely brown eyes. She saw more silver coloring his eyebrows, the lines of age appearing in his face; and she treasured her husband. Their lives shared together a century and a quarter, she could think of no other to take this new step of progressive thought with.
"Is everyone home?" She asked.
"Yes. Dr. Grayson has prepared end-meal for us. We await you to complete our table," he said. "Are you well, k'diwa?"
She thought for a moment. "I am."
Entering her home, the smell of uniquely different food wafted through, its enticing aroma encouraging her to join them. As she sat at the table, she looked at her family, the matriarch of this home well-satisfied. All six sat together in silence. She spoke.
"Tradition serves many purposes, and must be held in regard for many things. However, I have discerned today that justifiable issues that cause reconsideration of tradition simply for its maintenance," she paused to look her eldest in the eyes. "Sarek, the moment I gave birth to you I made an internal commitment, as all mothers do, to protect you, guide your growth, and advocate for your life and safety. The problems you both will face are beyond calculation, however, you shall encounter none within this family. Dr. Grayson - "
"O'komekh, please call me Amanda."
"As you will. Amanda, I am honored to claim you as our treasured daughter."
Solkar spoke in the soft, gentle voice he was renowned for." We are certain you both are aware of the socio-cultural issues you will face. There are currently six billion people on this planet alone who will debate both your choice and the decision to allow it. Grant them no authority over your peace or serenity."
"Father is right. The covenant you have taken with one another shall sustain you both through times of peace, and through those of difficulty. You will manage each as they happen, and grow together through them," Skon said. "You can have sympathy for their bigotry, prejudice, and the blindingly irrational fear. They will only have their illogic – but you? You shall still have each other. I knew I would gain a daughter, but never one such as you. I am honored to claim Thee."
Amanda felt the tidal wave of relief rush from him to her, and saw his face form an impenetrable wall of control. But she knew what he felt underneath it. She gathered her deepest peace and satisfaction, sharing with him.
/I am with Thee, adun./
Sarek looked at her across the table, finally able to begin assessing the peace and satisfaction of having his wife with him.
