Tell me just what you want me to be
One kiss and boom you're the only one for me
So please tell me why don't you come around no more
Cause right now I'm crying outside the door of your candy store
It just takes a little bit of this
A little bit of that
It started with a kiss
Now we're up to bat
A little bit of laughs
A little bit of pain
I'm telling you, my babe
It's all in the game of love
"What are you doing here?" Kenzie asked, watching Stefan walk up to her porch.
He held up a dress bag, her shoes in his other hand. "You forgot this, plus, I'm your date, remember?"
She rolled her eyes. "I don't really want you as my date either, I only said that to piss your brother off. You of all people should know I can take care of myself."
"Yeah but still, we're all playing along with poor human Kenzie, aren't we?"
She let out a disgruntled sigh as she took the dress and shoes from him. "Fine, come in, I shouldn't be too long."
He followed her in and she smiled at her dad still on the steps, about to move past him when she stopped and turned back to Stefan.
"Don't eat my Dad." She warned him.
He looked surprised and she shrugged. "He's compelled to be okay with all of this."
She slipped away upstairs and quickly changed, looking at the green and black dress with a smile on her face as she turned and viewed it from all angles. She looked great and she knew it. She slipped on the black stilettos and grabbed a matching clutch before moving down the stairs, hearing her Father's small gasp. She smiled at him before turning towards Stefan who was giving her an appreciative look as he held out a wrist corsage. She couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at him.
"you're kind of going all out, color me surprised."
"like you said, piss off my brother, huh?"
"You look wonderful, baby." Her dad said, stepping forward to give her a hug. "Have fun tonight and good luck with your plan."
She leaned up to give him a kiss on the cheek. "Thanks Dad. I'm going to grab a quick bite, did you want something?" She asked Stefan.
Stefan looked at her Dad, then her. "I thought you didn't want me to eat him."
Kenzie scowled. "No, you idiot, I have a fridge full of blood bags, do you want one?"
He pulled a face. "I prefer it warm and in a body."
"And, there's the Ripper. Old you was fine with blood bags, just be fine again." She disappeared down the stairs, returning moments later with an empty blood bag.
"Or join me in finding a warm body." He suggested.
Kenzie smirked at him. "You seem to think I have issues with that. I don't. I can take a sip, remember? Try it sometime."
"Don't be boring, Kenz."
"Don't be an asshole, Stef." She sneered. "Let's go." She led the way outside and waited by the passenger door of his car.
"I'm not opening that for you." He told her.
She glared at him, crossing her arms over her chest. "If I have to go to homecoming with you, with no limo, then yeah, I want preferential treatment."
He ignored her and got in but Kenzie continued to stand there, impatiently tapping her foot, even as Stefan started the car. Finally, the driver's side door opened and Stefan stepped out, walking around the car to open up her door with an annoyed sigh.
"Thank you." She said with a big triumphant smile on her face as she got in.
Stefan rolled his eyes before going back to the drivers side and getting in. "There's been a slight change of plans."
"What's that?" She asked.
"Homecoming has been cancelled, party is moving to Tyler's house."
Her eyes narrowed. "That's awfully convenient."
"How so?"
"Is this part of some bigger plan?"
His brow furrowed as he glanced over at her. "Whose bigger plan?"
"Oh, I don't know Stefan, someone we're perhaps waiting for?"
"I don't know." He told her.
Kenzie had a feeling he really didn't know as she sat back against the seat and pondered what to do. "Klaus wants me dead. If he shows up now, he just might really try and make it stick this time."
"I don't think so." Stefan replied. "He's going to be too busy with Mikael. But to be on the safe side, we'll just keep you far away from him."
The redhead smirked. "Gee, Ripper, don't tell me you're starting to care."
"You're fun Kenz, even if you are all moral and shit, I'm holding out to see if I could rid you of that."
She rolled her eyes as he pulled up to the Lockwood estate. "Give it up. Not going to happen."
She got out of the car, pausing to look around and listening to the music filtering from the backyard. She turned to look at Stefan, her hands on her hips, her head cocked to the side. "I think I was right. Tyler had this whole thing planned."
"I agree." Stefan replied, holding his arm out for her to take. She shrugged before looping her arm through his and letting him lead them to the backyard. A live band was playing on a huge stage while everyone moved around, the backyard completely packed.
"I don't recognize half these people." She muttered. "How the hell am I supposed to win the crown with all these people that don't even go here?" She grabbed someone's arm. "What are you drinking?"
The girl turned to her with a scowl. "Beer, duh."
Kenzie's lip curled up into a sneer as she forced the girl to look into her eyes. "I don't like your attitude. Give me that, now go find me something stronger. Now."
The girl handed her cup over before walking away and Kenzie took a drink, making a face at the beer. She wasn't big on beer, but it was a start.
"Compelling someone? But that's wrong." Stefan mocked her.
"Get bent." She snapped "Or I won't share whatever the bimbo brings back."
They moved closer to the stage, looking for anyone they recognized when Tyler walked up beside them, carrying a case of beer.
"Hey Kenz, Stefan."
"Hey Tyler. Nice party you've got going on." Stefan answered.
"Thanks, but I'm not the one throwing it. I'm just doing what Klaus wants."
"What do you mean?"
"It's not a party, man. It's a wake."
Stefan and Kenzie exchanged a look before the latter let out a small gasp. "Is he here? I'm supposed to be dead. He's going to kill me, again."
Tyler shook his head. "Don't worry about it Kenzie, he knows you're alive. Apparently Rebekah said something."
She breathed a small sigh of relief as Klaus took the stage.
"Good evening everyone." He started as the crowd started cheering. "I wanna thank you for being here with me to celebrate." His eyes scanned the crowd, coming to rest on Tyler before his eyes moved to Kenzie, who raised her chin defiantly, then to Stefan, a small smirk coming to his face. "It's been a long time coming."
"Caroline's gonna kill you." Kenzie whispered to Tyler.
"Kenzie!" Caroline cried, pushing her way through the crowd towards them. She paused to glare at Tyler before turning back to her shorter friend, a crown in hand, which she placed on Kenzie's head. "This whole dance is unconventional but you won the crown. Sorry for the lack of ceremony but some stupid sired idiot decided to let his Master throw this party. Congrats."
She spun on her heel and walked away and Kenzie smirked as she fixed the crown.
"Told you." She sang to Tyler who only shrugged and followed after his angry girlfriend.
At that moment, the girl Kenzie had compelled earlier came back with a bottle of vodka, handing it to Kenzie before walking away without another thought.
"Where's mine?" Stefan asked.
"You probably should have asked me to get you one before." She handed him her cup of beer before pulling the top off the vodka and toasting him with it. She turned to take a swig of the bottle, stopping when she saw Klaus walking towards them.
"Stefan." He nodded at him before turning to Kenzie with a small smirk. "And if it isn't the girl who just won't die. Mind you, with you wearing that crown, I believe it won't be long until my sister discards of you herself."
"Rebekah is my friend. In fact, I'm sure she compelled people to vote for me. Unlike you, she's actually decent. I'm going to go find someone who doesn't want to kill me."
"Good luck with that one, Love." Klaus called after her.
Kenzie curled her lip into a sneer before stomping away from them and up the steps, pausing at Elena on the stairway, except she knew it wasn't really Elena.
"Kenzie-" The Brunette began, playing the part
"Seriously? You think I want to talk to you yet? I'm not nearly drunk enough. So maybe you should go to hell Elena." She pushed past her, giving Katherine's arm a quick squeeze as she walked back in to the house.
"Kenzie." Bonnie called, pushing her way through the crowd. She went to give her a hug but the redhead moved out of the way.
"No one is ruining my hair or crown." She told the witch. Somehow she had escaped Bonnie touching her ever since she came back and she wasn't about the let the witch find out the truth about her and ruin everything.
Bonnie just laughed before pointing at the bottle. "Going a little hardcore?"
"Why not? I'm legal up in Canada."
Her brow furrowed. "you're 19?"
Kenzie resisted the urge to grimace because truthfully, she was 18 and would be forever. "Last week." She said instead.
"We missed your birthday?" Bonnie cried in disbelief. "Kenzie, why didn't you tell us?"
"Because I don't care, I haven't since my sister died."
"Your identical twin." She softly said.
Kenzie nodded, taking another long gulp of the vodka. "Can we just not right now Bonnie? I'm homecoming Queen, yippee. I'll talk to you later, okay?"
She left the witch, not wanting to talk about it or anything as she continued along, stopping every few moments to talk to someone she recognized who congratulated her on her crown. She thanked them, wondering what she should do now, just as Stefan came up behind her and grabbed her arm, pulling her to the front of the house and out the door.
"Don't manhandle me." She snapped.
"We have a problem. Now get in my car and come with me before one of Klaus' hybrids decide to take a bite out of you."
She looked around, wondering if all the people she didn't recognize were in fact hybrids before getting in the car just as Stefan took off out of the driveway, going back to the Salvatore house at top speed.
"So what's the issue?" She asked. "Why not just leave me here?"
"Because things are going to get ugly." He replied.
"Why do you even care what happens to me?" She asked. "Seriously Stefan. You know I can look after myself."
"But in doing so, you'll be telling everyone exactly what happened to you and having you play human is still tons of fun."
She shook her head with a roll of her eyes as he pulled into the driveway.
"Just stay here while I go talk to them."
Kenzie sighed but stayed put as he got out and went inside. She pulled out her phone and began taking pictures of herself in her crown for a new profile picture while she waited. A few minutes later, the door opened again but the wrong Salvatore brother got in.
"What are you doing?"
"Why are you here?"
They both asked at the same time.
"Why would my brother bring you back?"
"Because I'm his date and he didn't want the hybrids eating me?" She suggested.
He let out a small snort. "My brother doesn't care."
"He cares about irritating you." Kenzie shot back, pulling out a mirror from her purse so she could fix her makeup. "So how did you talk him into staying behind?"
"I didn't, let's go with… Mikael did."
She paused in applying powder to her nose to look at him. "You took another Vampire out of the game? Do you want to lose this?"
"You could always help."
Kenzie reached into her purse to pull out her lipstick. "Yeah, I'll attack Klaus with my crown. That'll work."
"That's not what I meant." He replied as they arrived back at the Lockwood estate.
"What? You want me to seduce him?" She asked as they got out.
Damon rolled his eyes, grabbing a nearby teenager and biting into her neck. He pulled away from her and held her out to the little redhead. "Hungry?" He asked.
"Actually, I'm quite famished." She replied, staring between him and the girl. "I really hope Tyler thought to get this catered."
"You want real food?" He asked in disbelief.
Her jaw dropped in disbelief. "Wait, you think I want blood or something? Okay, ew. Get a life Damon." She turned on her heel and stomped back into the house, all the while trying to figure out how or why he suspected what she was. Did Stefan perhaps say something? Did Katherine maybe?
As she reached the front steps, Damon right behind her, someone stepped in front of them.
"Invite only." The guy told them.
"I'm the Homecoming Queen." Kenzie snapped, moving to go around him when he grabbed her arm and hauled her back, pushing her into Damon. He steadied her, his hand on her waist as he stepped up to the guy.
"Never touch her." Damon snarled, reaching into the guys chest and pulling out his heart, throwing it on the ground.
"A little excessive." She noted, turning to face him.
"He manhandled you. Not okay."
"Why do you care?" She whispered.
He stared hard at her and Kenzie wondered if he was going to kiss her as he leaned down to whisper in her ear. "Because I love you."
She pulled away, her nostrils flaring as she tried to keep her emotions in check. He was lying, he had to be lying but why was he trying to get under her skin.
"Don't lie to me."
He rolled his eyes. "I'm not. What don't you get Red? I love you. Not Elena, I don't know what the fuck I said or did when I was busy dying but you seem to forget, I was busy dying. I had no idea what was going on, why can't you see that?"
"Because if I do, I'll fall right back into your trap." She whispered.
"What trap?" he asked, giving her a look like he thought she was crazy.
She shook her head. "I need to go."
"Red, come on." He called after her.
"Do what you have to do." She called back to him.
"By the way, that crown looks hot on you."
"Still not getting back in my pants." She sang as she walked inside.
She spent the next little while wandering through the house, accepting congratulations and looking for Katherine. She headed outside but when she didn't find her there, did another sweep of the house before moving outside again, finally spotting her watching the band.
"Did you tell anyone about me?" She hissed as she walked by, stopping in front of her.
"No." Katherine quietly replied. "Not a soul. Where's the fun in that?"
"Damon offered me food. From a neck. Catch up with you in a bit."
"Here." Katherine put something into her hands before walking away and Kenzie glanced down to see a couple vervain grenades that she slipped into her purse before going back into the house where Klaus was walking towards the front door to face Mikael. Everyone was walking out of the room but Kenzie pushed through them, stopping just out of sight.
"Hello, Niklaus." Mikael greeted him.
"Hello, Mikael. Why don`t you come in? Oh, that`s right. I forgot you can`t."
"Or you can come outside if you want."
"Or I could watch my hybrids tear you limb from limb." Klaus suggested.
Hybrids gathered behind them on the lawn as Mikael gave a small shake of his head. "They can`t kill me."
"True." Klaus agreed. "But it`ll make a hell of a party game. All I have to do is rub these two fingers together and they`ll pounce."
A hand covered Kenzie's mouth and her eyes drifted to the side to see Damon had moved up beside her, one hand motioning to be quiet before he removed the hand from her mouth. He opened up his jacket, showing her the stake inside and she nodded, understanding what he was getting at. In front of them, a hybrid stepped into view, pulling Katherine as Elena with her and pushing her at Mikael.
"Come out and face me, Niklaus. Or she dies."
"Go ahead, kill her."
Katherine's eyes widened in disbelief as she began to shake her head. "No, Klaus. He`ll do it."
Kenzie quietly pulled her phone out, tapping a message out before holding it up for Damon to read. He looked at it an eyebrow arching up in surprise at what was written.
Does Mikael know that's not Elena.
He pulled them back out of sight. "How do you know?" He whispered, his mouth right near her ear.
"Magic." She whispered, trying to ignore the feeling shooting through her at his closeness.
"Your heartbeat just sped up."
Outside, they heard Katherine being stabbed as she gasped, before falling to the porch.
"Stay here." He warned her, taking off. She stepped into view as Klaus turned around just in time to be staked in the stomach. Damon grabbed him by the neck, swinging him around and slamming him to the ground.
Kenzie ran forward just as Katherine stood up, ignoring Damon yelling at her to hide as she pulled the vervain grenades out of her purse and stepped out onto the porch, ignoring Mikael as she threw hers and Katherine threw wolfsbane grenades at the hybrids. With them incapacitated, they turned back around in time to see Damon lift the stake to kill Klaus when Stefan came flying in, spearing Damon off of him.
"What are you doing?" Damon hissed at his brother.
Kenzie went to rush inside, intent on finishing the job, even if she had to out herself when Katherine grabbed her.
"No." The brunette vampire told her. "self-preservation, kid."
"I don't care." She hissed, just as Klaus grabbed the stake and rushed a shocked Mikael, spearing him off the porch as he staked him in the heart. Mikael screamed as he went up in flames but Kenzie didn't wait to see the show as she ran inside dropping down beside Damon.
"What the hell did you do?" Damon asked his brother.
"He's earned his freedom." Klaus quietly said as he stepped back inside.
Stefan froze, his eyes moving to Kenzie who was watching with wide eyes before he stood up to face Klaus to be released from the compelling.
"go." She mouthed to Damon. "I'll catch up with you."
He looked like he wanted to take her with him but she shooed him away, knowing Klaus would be out for his blood. He quickly disappeared and she stood up just as Stefan turned around, back to his old self.
"Welcome back." She said.
"You." Klaus sneered, rushing her and grabbing her throat, pushing her up against the wall.
She stared back at him, her expression not changing.
"Let her go, Klaus." Stefan warned him.
"She tried to kill me."
"No, I didn't, I stopped your hybrids from trying to kill me." Kenzie said. "Also, they daggered your sister, which I wasn't a fan of and pretty pissed off about."
Stefan stepped up and gently removed Klaus' hand from her throat. The redhead slid to the ground as Stefan grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the house and down the driveway.
"Why?" She couldn't help but ask.
"He promised me my freedom."
"His death would've been your freedom."
High beams were flashed at them and Stefan led her over there, holding the back door open and waiting for her to get in before getting into the passenger seat.
"How are you not miles from here yet?" Kenzie asked Katherine.
"Was waiting for you." Katherine replied. "I'll drop you off K2."
"What about Stefan?"
"No, not me." The younger Salvatore brother replied. "Damon is ready to kill me."
"Because you didn't follow the plan maybe?" Kenzie reminded her.
"Because if I did, Damon would have died too." Stefan yelled turning to face her.
The redhead glanced between the two with wide eyes. "Come again?"
"Klaus told me that if he dies, Damon would die with him." Katherine explained, glancing at her in the rearview mirror. "So I told Stefan."
"Who didn't have his humanity."
"But I got him to care enough about his brother to do something."
Kenzie leaned back against the seat. "I'm so confused. Why would you do that?"
Katherine pulled up to the driveway of the Salvatore mansion, turning to face her. "Because I wanted to save them both. I like the old Stefan believe it or not. And well, I loved them both at one time. Humanity is a vampire's greatest weakness, no matter how easy it is to turn it off, it just keeps trying to fight its way back in. It did when it came to Cecilia and it does when it comes to you Kenz and same with Damon and Stefan. You still love Damon and if he died, it would destroy you. Perhaps enough to turn off that switch for you but as much as I want it to happen, I don't want it to like that."
Kenzie frowned, her mind racing as she put her hand on the door handle. "So what now?"
"I'd say come run away with me but I know you won't." Katherine replied with a ghost of a smile. "So I'm getting the hell out of here and I'll get Stefan to do what he has to. You know I'll message you the details soon. Be safe, Kid."
She nodded, smiling at Katherine and leaning over to give Stefan's shoulder a squeeze before getting out of the car and with a sigh, walking up to the door of the Mansion and letting herself in.
"We'll survive this." She could hear Elena speaking. "We always survive."
Kenzie appeared in the living room, seeing the two standing close together, Damon's face cradled between Elena's hands.
"Trust me." The brunette whispered.
Damon met her eyes briefly before looking down again. "We're never getting Stefan back."
"I wouldn't be so sure." Kenzie spoke up, leaning against the archway. She lifted an eyebrow at how quickly the two broke apart at the sound of her voice. "Amazing how I snuck right on in with a vampire in the house, huh?"
"You're okay." Elena sounded relieved. "Damon said he left you there and we were so worried."
"Looked like it." She replied with a snort.
"Where's Stefan?" Damon asked.
"Taking a mini vacay." She replied. "I just stopped by to tell you we're both alive, no need to worry."
Damon's phone rang and he picked it up, Kenzie easily hearing Katherine on the other end.
"Have a great night." She saluted them, turning to leave when Elena called out for her. She stopped, and looked back at the brunette.
"I'm glad you're okay. Thank you for letting us know."
She shrugged, "Whatever, enjoy your little flirt fest." She heard Elena's sigh of frustration but didn't turn back as she left the house.
