Chapter 36
Gabby
I lay in my bunk staring at the ceiling; the image of his face is imprinted in mind. Every time I close my eyes, I see him standing there looking at me with a smile on his face. I wish I was at Matt's house in his bed with his arms around me. I sigh as I turn my body so that I'm facing his office. I notice his lights are off, which means he has gone to bed. I look around to see if anyone is watching me, but everyone in the bunk room is a sleep. I creep out of my bed as quietly as possible.
Once I reach the door, I peer into the window and see Matt with his eyes closed. I slowly open the door and step into the office. He hasn't moved, I smile at the sight of the man I love. I quickly but quietly closed the door behind me and draw the shades down. I snuggle next to Matt's warm side. With in an instant, I feel his arm wrap around me.
"I thought you said that we would be sleeping in different bed while at work," Matt groggily said with his eyes closed.
"I couldn't sleep," I tell him as he covers my body up with his blanket.
"I told you it was a bad idea to be sleeping separate."
"And as I said, we need to be professionals at work."
"So is this you being professional?" Matt asked as he opened his eyes.
"Well I can always go back to my bed," I said as I began to sit up.
Matt quickly pulled me back down to him, "Now let's not get crazy here."
I smile as he kisses the top of my head, "We should have betted on who would break your rules first, because I would have won," Matt smirked as he finished his statement.
"Well seeing that my bed is surrounded by a bunch of snoring firemen, the odds are definitely in your favor."
"Speaking of snoring firemen, they were very excited to have you back today."
"I'm excited to be back."
"Good," Matt said rubbing my arm. I could feel there was more he wanted to say, but he was hesitating.
"What?" I asked.
"What are you talking about?" Matt questioned.
"I know there is something you want to say, but you're trying to put it in a simple cool way without wanting to come off as a worried boyfriend."
"Well now that you bring it up, there is something I want to say."
"Okay, go for it."
"Shay told me that on one of the runs you seemed distracted about something."
I try my best not to give myself away, "I was just thinking about how things have changed."
"Are you sure that's all it is?" Matt asked knowing there is something more.
"Yeah," I reassure him as I rest my head on his hard chest. I promised myself that I would protect Matt anyway possible and that is what I'm going to do. I listen has his heart beats under my ear and his breathing becomes even, I know he has fallen a sleep. The warmth of his body fills me and the safety of his arms makes me feel there is no place safer, I begin to drift off.
Matt
"Casey," I hear my name through the pounding on my office door and quickly open my eyes. I search for Dawson but she is no longer in my bed.
"Casey," I hear Severide's voice again.
"Yeah," I call out as I sit up from my bed.
Severide opens the door, "Chief wants to see us in his office real quick."
"Alright I'll be there in just a second," I say as I stand up and ran my hands through my hair.
A smile grew on Severide's face, "Did Dawson sleep in here?"
"Let's go" I say changing the subject.
"Did golden boy Matthew Casey break the rules?" Severide laughed as he walked out of the office.
"Fuck off," I say as we make our way to Boden's office.
Gabby
"Hey Antonio," I say as he answers his phone.
"Little sister," he greets. "What's up?"
"I was wondering if you could meet me this evening."
"Sure I'll come by Matt's after shift."
"No, meet me at the coffee shop around the corner of his place," I quickly reply.
"Why?"
"Can't I just hang out with my brother for a little while," I try my best to avoid the question.
"Fine," he quickly replies.
"Thanks" I say. We say our goodbyes and then I hang up the phone. As I slide the phone back into my pocket, I watch Matt come out Boden's office. He sees me standing here and makes his way toward me.
"Hey," he says as he stops in front of me.
"Morning," I say giving him a quick kiss on the cheek. "So what why were you Boden's offices?" I ask.
"Just some training stuff he wanted to go over for next month. So where were you this morning?"
"I didn't think it would look professional if I walked out of your office at six in the morning and I had some things to do."
"Well since you left me all alone, you can make it up to me by getting some breakfast after shift."
"We get off in a half hour," I say as I look at my watch. "Deal."
