Ch. 35- Adam & Eve
Sam and Dean were sitting in a diner on their way back to Bobby's house. Dean tried for the hundredth time calling Eve cell phone. He again got 'We're sorry, but this number has been disconnected. Please check the number and try again.' He growled in aggravation as he hung up his phone.
"It's still saying it's disconnected!" he snapped to Sam, who was on his laptop.
"Did you do anything to piss her off?" he asked Dean looking up from his research.
"No." Dean thought for a moment. "Did you?" Sam looked annoyed that Dean would even ask. "Look, dude, she's been missing for two whole days now. We need to figure out where she is. For all we know she could be dead or injured or being held captive."
"By who?" asked Sam. He'd never seen Dean this worried since Dad was missing.
"The demons or the angels, or whoever else might have beef with us!" he snapped. Sam shook his head. "What have you found out?"
"Something weird, Dean." said Sam unsure of how to put it. He turned the laptop around. "I pulled up her record. Eve was wanted suspect for the murder of that witches we killed, but now it's like it never happened." Dean stared at the screen in awe. "They're still dead, but somehow someone got her off the hook."
"How's that possible?" asked Dean. Sam shrugged. Dean searched her name on people search. Their food arrived, but Dean completely ignored it as he was looking Eve up. After a while, he spoke up. "All I've found is her old addresses and phone numbers." Suddenly Dean's phone rang. "Hey, Bobby." he answered.
"Have you found Eve yet?" he asked franticly.
"Not yet." said Dean.
"Well, I hate to break the bad news to you, but all of Eve's stuff, her cats and her car are gone." Bobby snapped.
"What?!"
"Yeah." he replied. "You guys better get here quick. We really need to find her."
"I know. We're on our way." They hung up with each other. Dean closed Sam laptop as he flagged down the waitress. "We're gonna need to take this to go." he said to her.
"Yes, sir." she replied going off to bring them to-go boxes.
"What'd he say?" asked Sam looking a bit freaked by Dean's hurry to leave.
"All of Eve's stuff is gone." he replied. "Now I'm really worried about her."
"Where's Cass?" asked Sam. "Wouldn't he know where to find her?"
"I've been trying to get a hold of him, but it's like he's dropped off the map too." The waitress gave them the to-go boxes. They quickly loaded their food into the boxes and hit the road.
As they were driving to Bobby's, Sam looked to Dean.
"Dude, you're so not going to like what I have to say, but maybe Eve and Cass have shacked up somewhere." he said. Dean shot Sam a glare.
"Neither of them would do that!" he snapped at Sam. "Anyways, why would all of her stuff disappear if they were just having a little romantic get away." Dean paused. "Which I so can't see happening. They're both so… angelic."
"Angelic?" asked Sam.
"I just can't see them getting jiggy with it, even if they weren't ditching us to do so."
"Can't see it or won't see it?" Dean mutter something under his breath as Sam spoke.
"I will throw you out of this car if you don't shut up!" he snapped. Sam looked out the window and remained quiet. Dean pulled out his phone as he was driving along and looked at Eve's old cell phone number. 'What the hell?' he thought. He hit talk. He held it to his ear. It rang and rang and finally…
"Hello?" came the voice of Eve. There was a lot of background noise. "Hello?"
"Eve?!" he called excitedly. Sam whipped his head back to Dean.
"Yes." she replied.
"Hey! It's me, Dean!"
"I'm sorry, I can't hear you." she said over the noise. "I'm at work."
"What?!" he asked surprised.
"I'll call you back later." she said.
"Wait! No-" Dean called into the phone, but it was too late, she hung up. Dean looked at the call ended on his phone. "Damn it!" he yelled.
"What?" asked Sam intrigued.
"She answered, but she couldn't hear me." Dean replied. "There was a lot of noise in the back."
"Like what kind of noise?"
"Like restaurant noise…" Dean froze thinking. "She used to work at a restaurant! She said she was at work."
"You think she's just run back to her old life without telling us?"
"No, but maybe she was forced back." said Dean thinking about it. "Cass said the higher ranking angels called her up. Maybe she pissed someone off up there."
"So they just put her back in her old life?" Sam asked questioningly. He raised his eyebrows and chuckled.
"I think so." Dean replied. "What if she knew too much for them to let her tag along with us? Doesn't it make sense to you?"
"Yeah." said Sam as he thought it through. "Sure, but why would Cass be dissing us?"
"Because he knows we're going to ask about her." said Dean. "He doesn't want to break the news to us because…" Dean mulled it over. "Because he might get in trouble for it!" With that Dean called Bobby. "Hey, Bobby!" Dean said excitedly. "I think I've figured it out!"
"What?!" he replied. "Really?!"
"Yeah." said Dean. "We think Eve was angel napped and forced back into her old life. I called her old call phone number and got her. She couldn't hear me because she was at 'work'. I figure that means her old restaurant job. It sounded like a restaurant. Problem is I don't know if she still has her memories or not. She didn't seem overjoyed to get a call from me. Sammy and I are going to head to Texas."
"Wow!" said Bobby. "Sounds like you really used your heads on this. I hope you've formulated a plan. Most likely if the angels took her away from us they probably want her to stay away from us. Call me if you need back up."
"Right." said Dean. He hung up the phone. Sam stared at him. "What?"
"You are determined." Sam stated in disbelief.
"Yeah, why aren't you?" he asked. "I mean, I know you two weren't the best of friends, but you gotta admit she was helpful to have as back up." Sam sighed.
It was dark, when they pulled into a gas station. There Dean gave the keys to Sam. As they dove on Dean fell asleep awkwardly in the passenger's seat. He woke up to the early light of a grey day. Sam was leaning against the hood of the Impala brushing his teeth as he looked out across a lake. Dean groaned and struggled to opened the door. When he finally managed it he nearly fell to the ground. Obviously stiff from the ride, Sam had the nerve to cheerfully ask, "Hey. How'd you sleep?"
"How do you think?" groaned Dean steadying himself as he got out. "I'm starving. Let's get breakfast." Sam pauses from brushing his teeth.
"Where?" he asked. "We're like two hours from anything."
"But I'm hungry now!" Dean snapped.
"There's probably still a sandwich in the back seat." Sam offered. He resumed caring for his teeth. Dean turned away to look for it. He rubbed his face tiredly before he dove through the open window to fish it out. He pulled out the brown paper bag and opened it, taking a deep sniff. He coughed and held it away as he made a sour face.
"It's tuna!" he whined. Sam watched in amusement, then gave Dean the baby violin as he threw the bag back in the back seat. "I hate you." Sam chuckled. Suddenly they both heard a phone ringing. Dean checked his pockets. He reached in through the window and opened the glove box. He grabbed the ringing phone and closed the glove box on several other phones. As he pulled himself out of the car he bumped his head.
"Isn't that Dad's phone?" Sam asked looking at the phone in Dean's hand. He nodded.
"Hello?" Dean answered.
"Uh, is this John?" came a shaky voice of a young man.
"He can't come to the phone." Dean replied. "Can I help you?"
"Uh, no, no, no, I need to talk to John. This is Adam Milligan. He knows me."
"Well, sorry to be the one to break this to you, pal, but John died." said Dean bluntly. "More than two years ago." Sam looked at him wondering who he was disclosing this information to. Most hunters already knew he hand passed away. "Who is this?" Dean asked after a moment reading the look on Sam's face.
"I-" started Adam sadly. "I'm his son."
