Jack had never thought about who else flew around in the sky, particularly at night. He figured that it was only the moon, it's light dimly illuminating the Earth at night, as Manny watched over every child on the planet's surface that passed into his vision. Jack thought that it was only airplanes and himself occasionally who patrolled the skies at night. And maybe Sandy. It was on a surprisingly balmy night that Jack discovered that he was not the only one who roamed above the cloud bank.
It had been too warm on the surface, so the winter spirit had retreated to above the clouds, where it was much colder, and he could make the imperative decision of smothering it in snow or not. He hovered over a particularly large cloud, one that held a considerable amount of water within it, and contemplated the punishment of snow (that wouldn't last very long down there) when he happened to look out the corner of his eye. There, he saw him.
It was a boy, perhaps younger than he was in appearance. He was covered in intricately patterned armor plates that looked heavy, though in all reality, it was light as air. The boy has a sort of glow to him, wispy in appearance, yet glowing like marine born bio-luminescence. His stringy hair fell around his face like a torn curtain, and, if it was possible, he was skinnier than even Jack. In one of his hands, he held a long gnarled stick with a crystalline dagger that glowed like the moon itself hastily attached to it in an attempt to make it function like a spear. He squatted upon a cloud, it's flimsy make up easily supporting his weight.
The boy looked to Jack, upon his sudden presence, eyes milky blue, the pupils disturbingly discernible. He stared.
Jack cocked his head to his favored side. "Hello."
The boy said nothing. The tip of his spear, however began to flicker almost excitedly, glowing bright as starlight, and then to a dim shimmer at the rate of a strobe. The glowy boy looked at it, then back at Jack, a smile now woven across his face. Jack allowed himself a internal "Oh" as he came to the highly possible conclusion that there was a Moonbeam trapped inside the crystalline dagger.
"And you would be, uh…?"
The boy didn't say anything; he just flew a little bit closer into Jack's personal space. The winter spirit retreated.
What was with this kid? Here Jack was, trying to be sociable for a change, and this kid was intent on freaking him out; the least he could do was say something. At Jack's painfully obvious state of confusion, the boy retracted his self a bit and laughed, warmly, and at his expense.
Okay, so he'll talk, but not to me. The elder frowned. Weird kid.
The spectral boy then tapped him on the shoulder, the dagger glowing brilliantly. He then pointed at a large array of clouds just ahead, grinning broadly.
Jack's eyebrows contracted. "What."
Without so much as a hint to his next course of action, the boy sped off in a rush, leaving a very startled winter sprite behind, laughing as he did so.
Jack furiously waved away the cloud stuff hovering in front of his face that was left from the other's wake. Irritated, he looked about, trying to track down the kid. It wasn't very hard, he had traveled a far ways away, but was still right in front of him, He grinned broadly, before his tiny body blasted a large hole through a voluminous cloud, allowing him to do a messy loopty-loop on the other side.
The other's eyes widened in surprise as the kid hung there, face twisted into a mischievous grin. He allowed himself a smirk of his own.
Yeah… I see what his game is now. He remarked silently. Jack sped himself, using the wind to the extent of its favor and chased after him, blasting the hole even wider until a huge mass of the cloud had been demolished. The spectral boy blinked in surprise, then laughed again, Jack giving him a off-kilter smile himself. His new friend then dove below the cloud bank, arms spread wide in free-fall. Jack chased in hot pursuit.
This was fun.
Sandy was making his rounds, as usual, the sky clear as crystal, dreamsand now fading away into golden dust. This meant he was done for the night; that was good at least. Now he had an hour or two to relax before moving on to the next time zone. He was positive no Night Terrors or Mares were lurking about; not that it surprised him. There was no reason for them to be, and that was why he could rest easy for now.
Or that was his assumption two seconds before a bright blue light zoomed past, close in proximity. It threw him off-balance, and he stumbled to recover it. He blinked, startled out of his usually relaxed demeanor, to see an old friend, hovering perhaps a few feet about and in front. He looked at Sandy, and recognized him almost immediately upon getting a visual on his face; he smiled broadly when he did. Sandy was about to smile and wave, when another object hurtled by underneath his sand platform at an amazing velocity; luckily, it wasn't at close range, so he didn't have to struggle to remain on-kilter. His old friend took one look and sped off, laughing his soothing, melodious laugh, that always put hearts at ease. There was another just after, a little deeper, a little more havoc and mayhem behind it, but just as recognizable.
It was Jack, hovering in the spot where the other had been. He whirled around to look at Sandy, who was raising an eyebrow at him.
"Sorry, Sandy." He grinned apologetically. "This unruly kid, you know?"
Sandy gestured to him, then Jack, forming a question mark above his head.
"Playing tag, I guess. Been at it for…." he suddenly became sheepish. "hours?"
Sandy smiled slightly, the mysterious boy hovered closer. Now that the eldest Guardian had been disrupted, their game was at an end, for now at least. The both flew closer, Jack perching on the golden cloud beneath the Sandman. The boy spun from light gave Sandy a winning smile, the smile of one who had been reunited with an old friend after who knows how long. Jack recognized this immediately, especially as Sandy smiled widely at him. It was so hard to communicate with mutes.
"Say, Sandy, do you know this kid?" he asked. Sandy nodded brightly. He then formed a peculiar shape over his head: a wall outlet with a light bulb plugged into it, an outer covering masking it as it created shadowy star patterns that had been cut into it.
Jack blinked. "Nightlight?"
The Moonbeam flickered brighter. Nightlight beamed.
AN/: I've been re-reading the books, since I just go the new one (and read it) yesterday. Nightlight is probably my favorite character.
(Kind of upset that there was no Jack as promised from the previous preview.)
I feel like Jack and Nightlight would be good friends, even if it was based on derping around together.
