•Chapter 37: Let's Try This Again...•

~Meanwhile~

"It's sad that they had to resort to this to get help," Emmy said. "I almost feel bad for Descole..."

"I actually kind of feel bad for Clive..." Flora said.

"I also feel bad for Noah a bit," Mokuba said.

"Pfft," Marik said. "I don't."

Mokuba turned to Marik with an angry look on his face. "Who cares what you think?! Out of all four of us, you actually belong in here! You kidnapped me once before! How does it feel?!"

"Hey! We have more important things to worry about than that!" Marik cried. "And I did feed you during your kidnapping."

Mokuba backed off. "True."

"Could the three of you stop yelling at each other?!" Emmy shouted. Everyone looked at her. "Now is not the time for arguing. Now is the time for thinking and acting. We have to think of how to get out of here."

Marik, Flora, and Mokuba all exchanged glances, then looked at Emmy and nodded silently.

She smiled. "Good. Now look around and see if you can find anything that could help."

It was then that they actually looked around at their surroundings.

They were in a room about the same size as the glass chambers. The floor was carpeted just the same. And just the same, there was a dim light illuminating everything, but no one could figure out its source. It seemed to be coming from the middle of the room and above them, because their shadows were cast down and out.

The walls were made of grey metal, and were smooth and simple. There was no ceiling. There was what looked like sliding metal doors on one wall of the room. Next to it was a panel on the wall with a note printed above it on a piece of paper.

"Could that be the way out?" Flora asked, pointing at the door.

"Could be," Emmy said.

"What does that note say?" Mokuba asked.

Emmy moved close to the panel so she could get a better look at the message above it. Upon closer examination, she could see that there was a small silver button in the small space between the edge of the panel and the doors. She squinted so she could make out the words on the paper in the dim light.

"Due to recent incidents," she read, "modifications to this room have been made. Now, if you are a guard and have fallen here by accident, you can escape by opening the panel below and connecting the puzzle recorder you used in your LBF Puzzle Training to the panel's port(s). The requirement for completing the training successfully is that you should have earned a total minimum of 1500 picarats. Only guards have puzzle recorders with this many picarats in them. When the panel registers that you have 1500 picarats, the door will open for you. And try not to fall down here again. Thank you."

When she read the last word, Emmy stood up straight and blinked in astonishment. "Wow. That's...um.."

"Please tell me that you and Flora have 1500 picarats between the two of you," Marik said with a hint of panic in his voice.

Emmy reached into her pocket. She took out a handful of weird indescribable floaty thingies. "I had about 500 already with me from before today. Then the Professor and Luke together gave me a total of 500 to hold for them..." She frowned deeply and looked sadly at everyone else. "I'm sorry. I only have 1000."

Mokuba threw his hands up in the air with a huge groan, then went in a corner and sat down. He folded his arms and just sat here looking annoyed. "So much for that plan!"

"I'm really sorry..." Emmy murmured.

"It's not your fault, Emmy," Flora said. "We'll figure something out."

"Too bad we don't have that puzzle recorder from before," Mokuba said.

Flora looked down at the floor. She thought for a moment. Then her eyes lit up and she smiled wide. "Wait a moment!" she cried enthusiastically. "I think...there's a chance..."

Emmy and Marik and Mokuba looked up and looked at her. They watched as she dug into her dress pocket. After a few moments, she froze and smiled again. Then she took out her hand. She held it out for Emmy to see, then opened her hand. "I have this," she said.

Mokuba and Marik walked over to her and looked at what it was.

It was a little flash drive.

Emmy's eyes widened. "Wait a moment!" she exclaimed. "I think I know what that is! They're really expensive and hard to find and make."

"Well what the frig is it?" Marik asked.

"They store puzzle recorder information," Emmy explained. "There are other devices that do this, and they store information about hints, hit coins, puzzles, and picarats. But what Flora has here is unique and rare and even more amazing! It can actually store picarats themselves. Not many puzzle devices can do that."

"So..." Mokuba said, "Does that mean we have enough picarats to escape?"

"It depends," Emmy said. "How many are in there?"

Flora closed her hand and looked at her fist. "I don't know," she replied. "I think there might be enough. Mokuba and I had to solve several puzzles to get out of the LFBs. We solved about 30 or so puzzles."

"That just might do the trick," Emmy said. "Here."

Emmy held out her handful of picarats really close to Flora's fist. Flora opened her hand again. Emmy dumped the picarats into it. The picarats that touched the flash-drive-looking thing were somehow sucked into the device. This continued for a few more seconds until every picarat had been sucked in.

Flora closed her hand again and walked over to the panel. She pressed the button. It slid up and out of the way, revealing a small black display screen, two tiny unlit lights one red and one green, and a port that looked like the flash-drive-thing fit into.

Flora inserted the drive into the port. A moment later, The display screen lit up and displayed the words:

"COUNTING PICARATS. . . . ."

Everyone waited in total intense silence, waiting for a sign of confirmation. Marik and Mokuba shuffled uncomfortably. Emmy moved towards the door in case someone decided to show up behind it. Flora folded her hands and stood there with a worried look on her face.

It seemed like a long five seconds, five seconds that felt like five minutes. But at last, the little red light went out and the display changed.

"TOTAL NUMBER OF PICARATS IS. . . . ."

And then a moment later.

"1505"

A cheer or joy went up from the four captives inside the small room. Emmy and Flora, and Mokuba and Marik, high-fived. Then Mokuba and Flora hugged and Emmy and Marik fist-pumped.

The little green light lit up. Then the doors slid open, revealing a short hallway that turned to the right after a few meters. It was just as dark as the room, its walls also metal. But its floors were tile.

Emmy walked out first. "Wait for me to make sure the coast is clear first," she instructed the other three. She looked around. Right away, she noticed a button on the wall next to the door on that side. She ran down the hallway, looked around the bend, then ran back.

"I don't see any guards, so I assume that it's safe to go. Let's get out of here before anyone notices! Hurry!"

Flora and Mokuba immediately ran out. Marik was the last to leave. Before he did, he took out the drive from the port and pressed the button next to the panel.

The panel slid shut. A moment later, the doors started closing.

Marik made it out before they closed completely.

The four of them stood in the hallway now.

"Mokuba," Emmy said, "you wouldn't happen to know how to get out of here, would you?"

Mokuba shrugged.

"I guess we're going out blind from here..." Flora murmured.

"Well let's just get a move on already, before someone finds us!" Marik said.

Everyone nodded. Then they took off running down the hallway, around the corner, and out of wherever they were.

THEY ESCAPED! YAY!

But will this be the last time they're kidnapped?

Uhhhhh...
