Nova had watched Kerrigan closely since their return to the leviathan. She noted how closed off she was to everyone around her, to the swarm, to Izsha, to her. It saddened her to see her like this, but she understood her pain when it came to Jim ran deep.
Knowing a deep conversation would not be possible in front of the Zerg, Nova had returned to the room they slept in and had told Kerrigan she would be there ready and waiting for her.
Hours had passed, and Nova was going out of her mind with worry. She knew how emotional Kerrigan got at times and hoped she wouldn't make any stupid decisions. She forced herself to stop thinking like that and tried to distract herself; she had to have faith in Kerrigan now and wait for to her to be ready. Nova had used the time wisely and given her rifle a thorough cleaning. Cleaning her gun helped to relax her, especially laying out all of the pieces exactly as detailed in the manual - that she'd of course memorized, and reassembling it.
Nova had just finished placing the final parts of her rifle together when she felt Kerrigan enter their room. Nova looked up at the strong primal queen and shot her a sympathetic smile. "Hey," she simply said as she lifted herself up off the floor.
Kerrigan accepted her words and took a few steps into the room. She opened her mouth to talk but stopped herself and paused for a moment. "Hey," she replied.
Nova felt relieved. It was the first time she'd heard her speak since the Moros. "How are you feeling?" Nova asked softly, hoping it wasn't a stupid question to ask.
Kerrigan ignored the question. Not because she didn't want to answer it, but because she didn't know how. There were so many emotions and feelings rattling around inside her, but she had no words to explain them. She shifted her eyes to the rifle on the floor and then back up to Nova. "I used to clean my rifle to distract myself, too," she stated.
"I was worried about you," Nova explained the need for the distraction.
Kerrigan took a few steps further into the room and she forced a smile before letting it fall again.
"What happened?" Nova asked gently. "In the cell. with Jim," she clarified.
Kerrigan remained quiet for some time before she spoke. "We're done," she said quietly.
Nova froze. Was Kerrigan going to end it? All she could manage to say was, "what?"
"That's what Jim said to me," she quickly added as she sensed Nova's thoughts.
Nova couldn't help but feel relieved. Not that Raynor had said those words, but that Kerrigan wasn't going to blow her off.
"Everything me and Jim went through," she thought back to the past. "Even after everything I did to him," she winced at that fact. "I thought he may have at least listened to what I had to say, that after everything we could still be friends," she lowered her eyes. "He hates me."
"Hate's a strong word," Nova replied. "I'm sure he doesn't hate you."
Kerrigan wasn't sure about that.
Nova stepped forward and placed her hand on Kerrigan's shoulder; half expecting Kerrigan to push it away. She was relieved when she let her keep it there. "I heard gun shots, did he try and kill you?" her voice was faint as she said those words.
"No," Kerrigan said softly, her voice was neither happy nor sad at the fact. Merely disappointed. "I gave him the option to," she explained. "I asked him if he still believed in me."
Nova couldn't tell if Jim did or didn't believe in her. Kerrigan was still stood in front of her, did that mean he did?
"He doesn't believe in me," Kerrigan answered Nova's question sadly. "He didn't kill me because he believes in Zeratul; in that stupid prophecy; that my death will result in the end of everything we know." She felt jealousy that Zeratul could command the trust Raynor had long since lost in her.
Nova frowned. She knew Raynor had seen things; visions, on the Hyperion from a crystal given to him from Zeratul. She knew he believed them, too.
"He doesn't believe I'm me," Kerrigan added. "He doesn't believe I'm not going to go on a rampage across the sector again."
"He doesn't know what you've been through," Nova explained. "You rocked up with the swarm behind you, looking like the Queen Bitch of the Universe. Of course he's going to worry you will revert to your old ways."
"Do you?" Kerrigan quickly asked, the tiniest hint of tears forming in her eyes.
"No," Nova answered without thinking. She took a moment and formulated a more complete answer. "I trust you, I know you, I know you'll protect the swarm, I know you'll kill Mengsk. I know you'll always do the right thing," Nova smiled. She didn't always agree with the way Kerrigan went about things, but put in her shoes; Nova didn't think she would behave any differently.
Kerrigan forced a smile. "I hope so," she told her.
Nova let her hand slide from Kerrigan's shoulder and took her hand in hers.
"I spoke to the Hyperion," Kerrigan said a few moments later.
Nova's eyes opened slightly bigger, both surprise and expectant to news of how that had gone. She was half surprised Jim hadn't ordered the Hyperion to suspend all communication with them.
"Valerian said Jim was in the medbay, but doing well," Kerrigan explained, sensing Nova was thinking about him. Kerrigan was thankful his ordeal had not taken too much of a toll on him physically.
"That's good," Nova said genuinely. She didn't wish harm upon him after everything that had happened.
Kerrigan appreciated the fact Nova didn't hold any hostility to Jim despite his dislike of them both. Not wishing to dwell on all that had happened she brought the subject back round to the point. "I told Valerian I was going to Korhal," she explained. "He realizes I'm going to kill his father."
"You asked him where he stood, didn't you?" Nova knew it was something that was playing on Kerrigan's mind and not something she'd tip toe around either.
Kerrigan nodded. "He believes Mengsk must be removed from power for the good of his people," she explained.
"So, he won't try and stop you?" Nova clarified.
"No," Kerrigan replied. "He knows he couldn't even if he wanted to. His duty is to the people who will need his leadership after Mengsk is gone."
Nova nodded her understanding.
"I want to believe Valerian will lead them to freedom," Kerrigan stated. "I hope he doesn't turn out like his father." She was taking a big risk putting her faith in Valerian and she hoped it wasn't misplaced.
"Me too," Nova added. Being away from the Dominion gave her perspective on how many lives Mengsk had ruined and that his dictatorship must end.
"When Mengsk is dead, the Terrans will be free. Where will you stand?" Kerrigan asked softly.
"Me?" Nova asked confused.
"You'll be free," Kerrigan said as tears lined her eyes again. "You can go back to your own people."
"You are my own people," Nova declared. "I'll be standing right beside you," she smiled and held Kerrigan's hand tighter.
Kerrigan felt relieved to hear those words and to feel them. "And if this prophecy is real? If there is a darkness coming that I have to face?"
"Then you'll need me," nothing would make Nova leave the love of her life. "I'm not going anywhere without you, sweetheart," Nova clarified.
Kerrigan smiled. "Did I ever tell you how much I love you?"
"Once or twice," Nova smirked. She welcomed Kerrigan's smile but saw the weariness in her eyes. "You should get some rest," Nova told her. "You've been through a lot today."
"We both have," Kerrigan added. She glanced her eyes to the bed and then back to Nova. "Lay with me?"
Nova nodded and led Kerrigan to their bed and unhooked her hand from hers.
Kerrigan laid on the mess of blankets and covered her legs with a blanket. It felt good to be in the soft blankets after the day she'd had.
Nova didn't bother to remove her ghost suit, it was just as comfortable to sleep in than not, and joined Kerrigan under the blanket. She laid on her side and allowed Kerrigan to spoon her.
Kerrigan cupped Nova with her body and placed an arm around her waist. She let her face rest against a few strands of Nova's soft hair, savoring it's floral smell.
Nova allowed a few moments to pass before speaking again. "Jim said something to me," she said softly.
Kerrigan waited to hear Nova's words, she doubted they would be good but she welcomed them.
"He said we deserved each other," Nova continued. Jim had meant it was an insult but Nova took it as a compliment. Nova knew she must have done something right to end up with someone she loved as much as Kerrigan.
Kerrigan read her thoughts and felt exactly the same about her. "Jim is right, we do deserve each other," Kerrigan smiled as she snuggled against Nova. "I love you."
"I love you, too," Nova replied.
