Chapter 35
-Real World-
Valka sits at the table in the Haddock house drinking her morning coffee. There's a knock at the door taking her attention away from the book in her hands.
Gobber is over for a morning visit but he doesn't seem to be his cheerful self. He seems agitated and nervous. "What can I do for you this morning Gobber?" Valka asks as she lets him in.
"Something's been bothering me about Hiccup's attack." Gobber starts.
Valka cocks her head in wonder.
"Before Hiccup was attacked, I heard Alvin and Drago conspiring to get rid of him. They said he wasn't fit to run a company. I chalked it up to a scorned man's venting over a drink. I fear I may have been wrong and Hiccup paid the price for it." Gobber confesses his guilt.
"With this information we could go to the police and lock them up for a very long time." Valka says with enthusiasm.
"Unfortunately that would never hold up in court. There's no proof. It would just look bad on us and turn the media against us." Gobber tells her, deflating the wind from her sails
"What can we do?"
Gobber shurgs. "Wait and hope that Hiccup wakes up."
-Coma World-
Hiccup's muscles work overtime as his hammer clangs down on the red hot metal again and again. Sweat beads on his forehead and he grunts with every swing. The blade is forming nicely and the tangs on the hilt are shaped out and in place. Hiccup takes a look down the blade checking it for straightness. He shoves the blade back into the hot coals. "Can I get some more heat bud?"
Toothless uses his plasma fire to increase the heat of the coals and Hiccup stares out of the cave absently as he waits for the blade to heat. He watches as Astrid practices with her axe out in the cove. She goes through moves and techniques striving for perfection.
Toothless nudges his arm, knocking him back to his job at hand. He pulls the blade back out and resumes pounding on it.
"It's a little plain isn't it?" Astrid asks as she looks at the sword that Hiccup has placed in front of her.
"Well it's not done yet. It needs to be sharpened, and I want to give it a little bit of a Hiccup twist. Plus I need to attach this to the handle." He says as he holds up a piece of the shark belly skin.
Astrid feels it. "Is this the same stuff that you used on my axe?" She asks.
"Yup. Same stuff. Didn't figure Gobber would use it. So I took a piece."
"You knew that you'd be making a sword?" Astrid questions.
Hiccup shrugs. "Not really. But I hoped that I would. And I had a feeling."
"What comes next?"
Hiccup is silent for a moment. He hadn't given it much thought. "Honestly? I hadn't thought about it. Improvement in our everyday living maybe? Who knows."
There's silence between them for a long moment before Astrid breaks it. "Think you'll finish it today?"
"Planning on it. Not much to do now." Hiccup tells her as he wraps the handle with the shark skin and uses a fine steel wire to hold it in place. He tests it on his hand to be sure that no pinching or poking is happening.
Astrid watches him intensely as Hiccup uses absolute precision in sharpening the blade. When it's sharp enough that it cuts a piece of parchment that he places on top of it. Astrid is clearly impressed at how sharp he managed to get it. Gobber had never gotten her axe that sharp. Even when Hiccup sharpened it, he couldn't get it as sharp as the sword that now sat in front of her eyes. The quality of the metal was unbelievable and the dragon fire enhanced its strength.
Once sharp, Hiccup puts his focus in details. He begins to etch in runes. "Those aren't Norse."
Hiccup glances up at Astrid who watches him closely with interest. "They're Celtic."
"Celtic?" The word is foreign on her tongue.
"I read about it in a book that I got from Johan. An island situated south of here."
His hands work gracefully, creating the shapes.
"Hiccup. It's…" Astrid is at a loss of words.
"A masterpiece." Hiccup finishes.
The finished sword sits on a massive stone. It's beautiful. Fit for an emperor of Rome. The hilt is adorned with silver wire over shark belly skin. The blade is sharp enough to split a hair in two and has Celtic runes along its length.
"What will you call it?" Astrid asks him.
He thinks for a moment before answering. "Excalibur."
Silence again as they bask in the greatness of the sword.
"Who will wield it?"
Hiccup shrugs. "Someone worthy. Maybe no one."
"You should wield it." Astrid tells him.
"Me?"
"Who better than the man who will bring peace between man and beast? You are the dragon tamer and as such deserve the best weapon in the world." Astrid explains to him.
He thinks about it for a moment when a noise cuts through the air. The war horn. "Dragons?" Hiccup says with a hint of confusion in his voice.
"No! invaders!" Astrid shouts as she makes a run out of the cave.
Hiccup follows after her trying not to fall behind but she's agile and quick. He bursts out of the bushes and nearly slams in to the back of Astrid who is stopped and standing at the edge of the cliff. Berk can be seen in the distance. Hundreds of warships as far as the eye can see.
"Berserkers?" Hiccup asks.
"No. Someone different. Someone much more dangerous." Astrid observes.
The sounds of swords clashing and warriors battling reaches Astrid's ears. "We need to get down there!"
She takes off running towards the village. Hiccup doesn't follow her. Instead, he heads for the cave.
Hiccup grabs Excalibur from its resting place. "Toothless! Time to go!"
The black dragon bounds in to the cave excitedly and Hiccup jumps on his back. "Let's go bud."
They shoot in to the sky, flying fast and high. Adrenaline is pumping through Hiccup's veins as he charges towards battle and most likely defeat. He spots Astrid down on the ground. She jumps over a log and lands spryly on her feet, pushing off in a sprint. "Let's get her bud."
Toothless and Hiccup dive towards the ground, spinning and twisting between trees. Leaves whip by Hiccup, some hitting him in the shoulders when they get too close to the trees. A branch hits Hiccup square in the face. "Careful bud. I'm still up here." Hiccup grumbles as he spits out a mouthful of leaves.
Toothless warbles beneath him just before grabbing Astrid by the arm. She screams in surprise but quickly regains her composure. "What are you doing Hiccup?" She demands as Toothless flicks her in to the air and catches her on his back just behind Hiccup.
Hiccup holds out Excalibur. "Flying in to battle. Protecting our people."
Astrid stares at him with something sparkling in her eye. Is that amazement?
Toothless crests the hilly forest and there's Berk, building burning and warriors fighting. Many dead on both sides. The clear leader of the enemy stands in the middle of the massive army near the west shores. He laughs loudly while holding his spear.
"Drop me off near the forge. I need an axe." Astrid tells him.
Hiccup nods as he steers Astrid towards the forge where Gobber is battling off 3 invaders.
A Viking screams out "Night Fury!" just as Toothless slams down to the ground, smashing away the soldiers and saving Gobber.
"Hiccup! What is the meaning of this?" Gobber shouts in surprise.
"Using air artillery to gain the upper hand. Let's do this Toothless." Hiccup says as he raises Excalibur to the skies. The sun beats off the blade causing Vikings and invaders nearby to pause in awe.
Hiccup and Toothless wreak havoc on the invaders, speeding through the sky and blasting away soldiers and siege weapons alike.
With the height, Hiccup has a birds eye view and can see everything. He rescues Mulch from being cut down but in doing so he was unable to stop Bucket from being run through by a sword. For every person he saves, another dies but he must keep battling.
Toothless fires a plasma bolt, blasting an invader to ash. Arrows fly by and one nicks Hiccup in the arm. He grabs his arm, checking to see how bad the wound is but he keeps fighting. "I'm fine bud. We need to keep fighting.
He spots the twins. At least what's left of the twins. Tuffnut kneels on the ground with his spear beside him, clutching his throat, blood spurting between his fingers. Bodies of invaders are scattered about him. He put up a hell of a fight but he was greatly outnumbered. The man who struck him down uses a foot to shove Tuff roughly back on to his back.
Ruffnut backs away from the scene. Surrounded, she holds her sword at the ready but how much of a threat can a pregnant Viking be against a slew of battle hardened invaders. She parries a blade aside as she backs up more. Her back hits against the wall of a house and she realizes that she's trapped.
"Ruffnut!" Hiccup shouts over the roar of battle.
She looks up and can't believe her eyes. Her husband is riding in on a Night Fury. Toothless blasts two shots, disintegrating invaders. The smash on to the ground, Toothless' claws digging at the dirt for traction. Hiccup just from his back and cuts down a man using Excalibur. He turns on a second invader and blocks a hard blow aside. The effort from the blow caused Excalibur's blade to cut through the low quality steel of the attacker. With a ringing clang, the sword split in two and everyone froze at the suddenness of it. Jaws dropped and people retreated in fear at the might of the sword Hiccup wielded. Ruffnut's mouth gaped as she tried to find words but none came to her that seemed to suit.
"Are you okay?" Hiccup asks her as he reaches her. Toothless watches his back, making sure that no one gets near them.
"You're…. riding a Night Fury?" Ruffnut says dumbly.
"Had we learned to tame all the dragons, we could have won this war hands down. Now I'm not so sure we can." Hiccup explains with a frown. "Will you be alright? I need to get back up to the sky."
Ruffnut nods and Hiccup runs to Toothless. He's about to mount on to Toothless back. "Hiccup."
He glances at Ruffnut to see what she wants only to find an arrow protruding from her chest. Hiccup drops the sword and runs to her side as the strength leaves her legs and she collapses. He manages to catch her and lessen the landing. "Ruffnut. Hang in there."
"I'm sorry Hiccup. I know you only married me to strengthen the village. I know you loved Astrid. Please. Forgive." She suffered through what she needed to say as she coughed and sputtered blood and eventually she didn't have the strength to continue.
Hiccup glances at his wife and his unborn baby that will now die. His people were dying at the hands of someone that he hadn't met and he was powerless to keep them all alive. A loud shouting brought him back to the battle. "You want a piece of me?! You want a piece of Snotlout Jorgenson! I'll tear you apart!"
Hiccup recovers the sword and breaks in to a run towards the shouting. "Toothless! With me!" He hacked his way through a crowd.
Snotlout battles against three different men at the same time when Hiccup comes around the corner. The trio battle off the enemy in no time now that the odds were evened.
Snotlout brings his hammer down, aiming for Toothless but Hiccup blocks the blow with the sword. "Are you mad?! It's a Night Fury! He needs to be put down."
"This is Toothless. And he is going to help save our village from total destruction." Hiccup says as he tosses a leg over Toothless' back. "Let's go bud. More people to help."
They kick off from the ground. They're not in the air long when he spots his father fighting Drago. Stoick is seriously outnumbered. "There!" Hiccup points with Excalibur.
Toothless lands with a crash and explosion in between the two leaders. The shockwave knocks everyone back and the lesser soldiers back away ever so lightly in fear.
Hiccup leans in to Toothless. "Stick to the air and keep them at bay." He tells the dragon as the dust begins to settle.
Hiccup holds the sword ready as Toothless takes off in to the air. The dust settles and he stands between Stoick and Drago.
"Hiccup!" Stoick says in alarm.
"I got this dad." Hiccup tells him. "The village needs you."
"Son…"
"Go. I can handle him." Hiccup reassures.
"And who might you be?" Drago questions in disgust.
"I am Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the third." Hiccup announces. "And you are an unwanted guest."
Drago laughs a laugh that is very discomforting to those around him. Invaders try to close in on Drago and Hiccup but Toothless holds them back.
"You think you can take me on boy?" Drago taunts. "Let's see what you've got.
Hiccup charges at him with the sword and the two clash in hand to hand combat. Hiccup is more agile and quicker but Drago is the stronger of the two. Hiccup ducks a mad swing and parries aside a stab.
He hacks down but with a quick flick, Drago blocks the attack and kicks Hiccup's legs out from under him.
A thud knocks the wind out of him and Hiccup barely rolls out of the way as Drago's massive spear tears in to the dirt.
Using a roll technique, Hiccup boots Drago back.
Drago begins to laugh. "You have spunk kid. I'll give you that. And a mighty fine sword."
Hiccup stays at the ready in case Drago tries anything sneaky.
"I'll make a deal with you boy. I want that sword." Drago begins.
"It's not for trade." Hiccup scowls.
"You didn't let me finish boy. That sword and I will leave. There's something magical about that sword." Drago continues.
"You will leave? What about all your men? You leave and they stay?" Hiccup asks suspiciously.
"On my word. Me and my men will leave. And never return." Drago tells him.
"And if I kill you now, your men leave anyways and I keep the sword." Hiccup threatens.
"I believe there's something else that might make you change your mind." Drago laughs. "Bring them out!"
Fishlegs and Astrid are drug through the crowd. Fishlegs is battered and bruised, barely conscious. Astrid still has some fight in her but she's outnumbered and can't over power her captures.
"I'll throw in your friends to sweeten the deal." Drago says with a grotesque smile.
"How do you know they're my friends?" Hiccup asks curiously.
"I've had spies here for months. I know more than you know Hiccup." Drago narrows his eyes.
Drago holds his hand up waiting, ready to give the order.
"Do we have a deal?" Drago asks.
"Don't do it Hiccup!" Astrid shouts before a hand is clapped over her mouth.
Hiccup shines the sunlight off the blade in to Drago's eyes and attacks, catching the big man off guard. Excalibur's blade bites in to Drago's arm but much to Hiccup's surprise it's a loud metallic crack.
Drago grabs Hiccup by the face and shoves him backwards. Tripping over a rock, Hiccup slams down on the ground hard. He's slow to get up.
"You're a sneaky one Hiccup Haddock. But stupid. Very stupid. Kill the boy." Drago instructs.
A blade is plunged in to Fishlegs back. He arches trying to get away from it as the life is sucked out of him from the piercing.
"Noooo!" Hiccup screams as he rushes forward again. Hacking and slicing at Drago with savage blows. Drago blocks and parries them all waiting for an opening patiently. He finds out and he boots Hiccup back.
"One last try Hiccup. The sword." Drago demands.
Hiccup's mind works a million miles per hour. What to do? He glances around at all the men surrounding him. At the destruction that Drago has brought. At Astrid who's wide eyes are filled with fear and love. He stares at the rock in front of him and gets an idea.
"You will never possess this sword!" He shouts.
He charges, but instead of attacking this time, he lifts the sword up and stabs down in to the rock, sinking the blade in to it.
A shockwave explodes from the sword, kicking up dust everywhere. Hiccup braces for his impending death that he assumes is coming.
It doesn't come and Hiccup opens his eyes and looks around. The village hasn't changed but no one is there anymore. No soldiers, no bodies, no Astrid. Still holding Excalibur, he blinks thinking that it can't be real.
The vision doesn't change. "Am I dead?" He asks no one.
"Far from it." Stoick voice booms from behind him.
Hiccup spins around to find his father standing there, smiling proudly.
"First the secrets, then the Night Fury and the sword." Stoick begins.
"I know dad. I'm so sorry." Hiccup apologizes but Stoick holds up his hand to stop him.
"Let me finish. You don't belong here son."
Hiccup is a bit stunned. "What do you mean dad?"
"You've known for some time. You're not a dragon killer. You're different. This isn't your world. This is our world." Stoick tells him.
"I don't know what else to do though." Hiccup tells his father.
Stoick grabs him in to a hug. "I'm proud of you son. I couldn't have had a better son. I love you."
"I love you too dad."
"It's time for you to wake up." Stoick says with a bright smile on his face.
"Wake up?" Hiccup questions with his signature raised eyebrow.
"Let go of the sword and wake up, son. You're needed."
Hiccup looks at the hand that he still hasn't taken off the sword handle and slowly he releases it. The world shuts down. Quickly, imploding.
-Real World-
Hiccup's eyes open. Blinding brightness causing an instant headache. He struggles to see his surroundings. He can't move. What was going on? He tries to speak but his throat is drier than the Sahara Desert. His mouth moves but nothing comes out.
He tries to sit up but every muscle is his body fights back against him. He manages to move his fingers. His eyes are open but everything is blurry still. The exertion is taking its toll on Hiccup and he's beginning to lose consciousness again. A comforting voice reaches his ears. "He's awake!" It's Astrid. She's there with him. He's relieved to know that she's there as he goes back to sleep.
