Chapter 37
Things weren't much better when Altair returned. The Mentor, now out of the infirmary but still very ill, had refused to speak to Evangeline for the entire two weeks that Altair was absent.
The blonde was banished from speaking with the Mentor until she was to be told otherwise. But the Master Assassin couldn't help but be caught in the middle of things! Evangeline would sit facing the fireplace all evening, perhaps read a book or fuss over Danor if he was present. But she would not look at Altair or speak to him unless he asked her something, or instigated conversation (which was very rare).
Altair didn't mind, however. He appreciated the peace and quiet during the evenings. But he couldn't help but feel on edge, which was unusual when he wasn't training, sparring or on a mission.
It wasn't just with Evangeline though. Al Mualim had had a very bristled approach with him as well.
Altair had thought that their dispute may have been over himself, but again, he did not care. As long as he was alive, and still respected, that was all that mattered to him.
But when he appeared to receive his wife's full attention all at once, it made him feel slightly – very - uncomfortable.
It was just after he had had a long meeting with the Mentor, and Altair was returning to his chambers when it happened. He had never witnessed her to have been in this state since the incident a few years ago with the child murderer, and it slightly unnerved him.
The blonde had bombarded him with her emotions as soon as he had closed the door upon entry into their chambers. Her tear stained face was the first thing that put him on edge.
"What-" He began.
"-Please!" She cut him off, her tone one he had never heard her use before and he was confused. "He will not see me! I cannot even apologise to him, he's ignoring my letters, Altair. Please tell me that this will not go on forever!"
She was begging him. Actually begging him. Her hands fisted in the front of him robes pleadingly, as she pulled her body flush with his own - hanging on to him as if he were her only hope.
"Please, Altair!" She begged, "Can you speak to him for me-"
"I cannot do anything-"
"-He hasn't seen Danor for four weeks! And Danor keeps asking me if we can go, I take him and we are made to go away!"
"I will take him tomorrow." He placed his hands over hers, and loosened her grip so that he could pry her fingers from his robes. "But he will not speak to me in regards to you. I have already approached him on the subject." He stepped away from her and made his way towards the dresser where he removed and unsheathed his weapons, "If you wish to speak with him, you must wait-"
"-But I have waited, Altair." Tears brimmed in her blue eyes which caused the Master Assassin to feel uncomfortable again; he averted his gaze. "He's made no sign of speaking with me, this has never happened between us before-"
"-Then you really must have angered him." He glanced at her before looking down at his hands as he removed his gloves. "What did you say to him?"
"I asked him if there was a motive for him wanting my return from Jerusalem so badly."
Altair looked up at her as her voice evened its tone once more, "Jerusalem again?" He questioned factually, "You were bringing this upon yourself."
She shook her head, "I didn't see it that way; I wasn't thinking. I was blinded by my frustration and anger that I didn't realise-"
"-Why did you even go to him in such a state?" He interrupted. "You know well enough, that he is not in any condition to receive such stress. With his work at the moment, that is more than enough."
"I know, Altair, I know." She wiped her eyes quickly, obviously angry at herself for losing her composure. "Please, will you try and speak to him for me?"
The Master Assassin was silent for a moment before nodding his head once, "I haven't had any luck before. But I will see what I can do. I will try and speak to him when I take Danor to visit him tomorrow."
She looked down at her feet, slightly embarrassed at her sudden bout of emotion which she had obviously unnerved him with, "Thank you." He nodded his head once before retreating towards the fireplace where his son was playing with his toys.
