Chapter 37
"Jacks, love, how are you doing?" Eamon asked as he led her back to their bed.
"Well, I thought I get to practice a little more before I found myself in this situation."
"Practice?" he asked in disbelief.
Jacks realized what Eamon was thinking and burst into laughter. "Not that kind of practice. Although I wanted more of that too," she shook her head sadly. "I was referring to practicing with Adara and Maeve's babies. I wanted to get a refresher course on infant care, but it seems they will all get to practice with our babies instead of the other way around."
Eamon couldn't help but smile at seeing some of her worry slip away with her laughter. "Well, I'm sure your mother would be happy to come isn't supposed to be a natural instinct or whatever?"
"I don't know," she shrugged, feeling a little less worried when she realized she could have her mom here to help. "What I do know is that you are planning for our munchkins to stay in a room attatched to ours. A plan I wholeheartedly agree with for as long as they will let us," she chuckled. "I also know we need three names."
Feeling her panic resurfacing, "Jacks, we have a while to go before you need to panic about names. We can start talking about them now, but we don't have to decide right now."
She took a deep breath, "You're right. I just feel rushed since I got to skip the first month and all. Also, they are probably going to come at least a month early, so instead of nine months we get six maybe seven at best. We have so much stuff we need to buy, but with me not working…. Oh my gosh!"
"What is it, a ghrá?"
"My job," she shouted. "Jenna and I have been so caught up in all of this, we forgot about our jobs."
"Okay, about that," Eamon took a fortifying breath. "You resigned shortly after being recovered from Garrrick's cabin."
"We what?"
"We had Shanahan, a wolf who works as a police officer, deliver two resignations letters along with a slightly falsified police report describing Garrick's abduction of the two of you. From what I understand, Mr. Adams was very understanding and offered to pay you for the next three months as a sort of apology for hiring such a degenerate."
Feeling Eamon's rising anger, she snuggled back up against him. "Well, someone should tell Jenna, but I know she'll understand. Even if Kael is her mate, our office is way too far for us to work there. Although, I doubt I will have much time to work in the next six years at the least. I always feared having twins because it's like one parent per child, but three is going to be a lot to handle."
Eamon was relieved she wasn't upset. He doubted Jenna would be that reasonable, but his mate had brought his focus back to the most important things in their lives. "Well, a ghrá, it's a good thing that everyone in this pack will be willing to help."
"And by everyone you mean the people from you list of approved mated pairs," she smirked as she let her hand run across his chest.
"If we were having boys I would be a little more, reasonable," he grabbed her hand from his chest and kissed her knuckles. "And once they see our daughter's eyes, well, it could be enough of an incentive for a desperate man to take action. So, my plan is to keep them isolated enough from unmated males that we won't have to worry too much. Of course, I will approve some to be added to your security detail because I can't take males away from their females all the time."
Jacks laughed, "How did I get such a reasonable man?"
"Now that I have assuaged that worry, why don't we discuss names?"
"Well, I guess we should decide if we want Irish names."
"I think maybe Irish first names, but I imagine you would like to reserve the middle names for your friends' maybe?"
Jacks pondered his suggestion, "As much as I would love to name them after my friends, I believe with my new additions, they would each have four names."
"That's fair enough. So Irish names?"
"I think at least one Irish name for each one. Unlike my mother I have no qualms about Irish names. Speaking of mothers….what was your mother's name?" she tried to make it casual, but she thought it was an important question.
"My mother's name was Aoife," Eamon smiled slightly. "It's actually Nora's middle name."
"Okay, are you going to call your sister? Let her know she's going to be an aunt?"
"Treasach called my uncle, and I am sure he will take care of it," Eamon's voice seemed void of emotion, but she felt his hurt.
Jacks rubbed the scruff on his cheek, "Eamon, call her. It will mean something to her if you want to include her in this experience okay. You don't have to tell her how many, but tell her she's going to be an aunt."
"Fine," he huffed. "But later, I imagine you will need a nap shortly. I will call her then."
"I do not‒"
He interrupted his annoyed mate, "Love, I can feel you exhaustion. And you hunger. I'll get you some food and then you can rest. I know this is a fast change, but you are going to have consider these things since you are currently taking care of four individuals and not just one. I can't believe none of us thought to feed you after that accelerated growth, your body's supplies have to be drained."
"I think Jenna filled me up when she healered me," Jacks reassured him. "I'm only slightly hungry because I imagine it is slightly close to lunch time. But," she added hurriedly so he didn't get up. "You are not getting up until we decide these names. I know we have lots of time for me to change my mind, but according to my mother pregnancy hormones will adle my brain later so I should decide early on."
"Alright," he rubbed her arm reassuringly. "I won't leave until we have tentative names for our little lasses."
"I'm drawing a blank," she sighed. "Hit me with some Irish names."
"How about Rhoda? It means radiant. Aideen means fire. Uh," he rubbed his chin with the arm that wasn't holding his mate. "Shea means admirable I think. Maybe we should find a book or look names up on my laptop."
"What is with you people and the meanings?"
Eamon chuckled, "My mother always taught me there is power in a name, and I would like to give our daughters a gift by granting them names worthy of them. If you don't mind I would appreciate if you would just humor me."
She was moved by his little speech, "Of course I will humor you, Eamon"
Eamon reluctantly got up to retrieve his laptop. For the next hour they scoured the internet for the perfect names.
"I like Shea, Mona, and Mairin," Jacks decided.
"I also like Shea, and Mona, but Mairin, I don't know," Eamon sighed. "Siomha or Saiorse?"
"Siomha is like Niamh, she'll have to deal with everyone saying it wrong. Also, Sheeva sounds way more Egyptian than Irish in my opinion."
"Saraid?"
"What is with you and S names?"
"Jacks, you know I'm thinking about the meanings as well."
Jacks rolled her eyes, "You want to name our daughter excellent."
"Mairead?"
"So pearl is better than destiny?" Jacks sighed. "I thought Mairin would be a fitting name for our prophecy child, but I could see where that could be an issue."
"How would your sister feel if we named her Nora?" she asked quietly.
"Nora, Shea, and Mona?" Eamon laughed. "You would pick the shortest of the names on this list."
"No, if I was going for short I would have picked Una," Jacks laughed. "So?"
"Middle names are still up for debate, but I think she would be honored."
"Well, with that part out of the way… How are we going to decide who gets what name?" she laughed.
"I think we should just wait until we meet them before we worry about that, love," Eamon smiled, finally letting himself get excited at the prospect of having a family, despite the challenges that lay ahead.
"Why do I imagine you being such a pushover?" Jacks laughed.
Eamon chuckled, "Probably because I would do anything for you."
"Ah, yes, anything for me," she smirked.
Catching his mate's thoughts, Eamon's jaw dropped, "This conversation took quite the turn."
"Well‒" a loud boom interrupted Jacks, and her panic spiked, recalling the bomb that had almost killed Jenna. "Eamon…"
He saw the distraught look on his mate's face, but he didn't know if her friends were okay. He didn't know if anyone was okay, but he was thankful to be with his mate.
"Do we check the bunker first or Kael's office?"
Eamon thought for a second, "Well, Kael's office is closer, but if Jenna's in the bunker, we are going to need her sooner rather than later."
"Let's just peak into Kael's office," Jacks suggested.
Eamon grabbed her hand and led her to the hallway where he saw a gaping hole where the door to Kael's office used to be. He immediately begain scanning the area. If his mate had been safely ensconced somewhere else, he would have charged into the room looking for his friends and cousin. But, she was his first priority, above even the alpha of the alphas.
"Jacks, I'm taking you to the bunker. I'll grab Jenna and Keeva, but the pregnant wolves need to stay in the bunker."
"Eamon," her breath caught at the thought of something happening to him while she sat in the stupid bunker, but she knew she had to be more careful now.
"Thank you," Eamon exhaled when he saw his mate's agreement.
They began running toward the bunker. They were rounding the last corner when someone reached for Jacks. She felt the hands on her waist, but before she could even react, Eamon had the man pinned against the wall. Her fear had not receded, but she was more shocked than anything else. Feet dangling, face red as he struggled to breath, Thanatos struggled to free himself from Eamon's grasp.
"Eamon?" Jacks asked. "What's going on?"
"I think he planted the bombs."
"What?" her stomach dropped.
"He's a good distance away from Kael's office, and he is unaccompanied. I don't smell anyone else."
Thanatos spit at Eamon, "Put me down. I could have your head for treating a visiting alpha like this."
"Thanatos," Jacks's rage ignited. "If you could take him, you wouldn't be in this position."
"Besides, I'm more dominant than you, and you attempted to manhandle my mate. Also a death sentence if I didn't think you were useful," Eamon growled. "Now, why are you wandering the halls alone while my alpha's office has a large hole in it?"
"Ms. Sinclair, you were a lawyer right?" She nodded. "I plead the fifth."
That gave it away for Eamon. Thanatos was working with the El Paso pack. No one who had not been on the mission to rescue Jenna and Jacks knew they were lawyers. He heard Jacks gasp, but his energy was focused on not killing their best lead. All he wanted to do was rip the man's throat out, but he knew that they had to uncover the entire network or these attacks would continue.
"Eamon," Jacks's voice interrupted his internal rant. "We need to get moving. What do you want to do with him?"
Love, go get Sláine. She should be in her office. We are going to sedate him and strap him down until I make sure everyone is safe. After that, well, it's probably better I don't tell you.
Roger that.
He was proud of her when she turned around as if he had not just insinuated torturing the man he restrained. She made the rest of the way to Sláine's office. Before Eamon could really think about it, the woman was plunging the needle into a thrashing Thanatos.
"Sorry," the doctor apologized. "He's probably going to be out for at least twelve hours. Jacks, gave me the cliff notes version of what happened."
"Where is my mate?" he asked as he dragged Thanatos to one of the beds in the medical wing before securing him.
"I gave her the bunker code," Sláine admitted. "You should probably go. I imagine all of those women are scrambling to get to their mates."
Before he could do anything, he watched Nia and Jenna sprint past him. Nothing prepared him for what he found in the bunker. His mate was sobbing as she clutched a motionless Maeve to her chest. Adara looked shocked, but he also noticed the sweat dripping down her forehead. Blyana was laying on the floor curled into herself, and Keeva was trying to comfort the young woman. Zoya had shifted into wolf form and was making her way out the door. Eamon knew better than to stop her. He had seen her temper, but this was different. She was calculating. Suddenly, he was grateful for what he went through this morning to avoid his mate worrying about him like these women. Unfortunately, his eyes shifted back to Maeve, when he noticed her chest moving, he froze. If Liam was dead, she wouldn't be breathing.
"Adara, what's going on?" he asked, deciding she seemed the most capable of actually responding.
"We were sitting here badgering Jenna," Adara choked on her sob. "She heard her mate, but wasn't sure who it was. We kept telling her to look into his mind and find out, and then Maeve and Blyana collapsed. None of us could get our mate's through the bonds, but as we were still breathing we at least knew they were alive. From what Keeva's been able to deduce, Dakota is in pretty bad shape. Jenna and Nia, took off. Oh, Nia…" Adara covered her mouth as she cried out. "Treasach…he….he was hurt too."
"What's going on with Maeve?"
"If she wasn't breathing, I would say Liam died, but we have no idea," she shook her head looking at her best friend. "Eamon, what happened? How's Brady?"
"There was an explosion in Kael's office. I haven't been there yet, but I know Thanatos was part of it. I found him making his way down here when he tried to attack Jacks. He revealed enough information to confirm he's in league with the El Paso pack." He ran his hand through his hair. "Like I told my mate, the pregnant women need to stay here. My plan was to take Jenna and Keeva with me so Jenna could have a wolf protector if things went south, but it's obvious she's needed here."
"Okay," she nodded. "You might want to catch up with the two humans who sprinted into danger."
He took one look at his mate after letting out a string of expletives. When she nodded, he let his full speed out and arrived in Kael's office in seconds. He made it there in under a minute, but he took a second before climbing through the hole in the wall. Surveying the area, he was able to determine that the bomb had gone off somewhere in the center of the room. His immediate thought was that I had been sitting under the table right in front of Jacks and him this morning, but he didn't give him time to get worked up. As his alpha instincts were in overdrive, he immediately looked for anyone he could help. The first person he found was Brady who was giving Liam CPR.
Brady saw his beta. "Eamon, thank goodness." He paused to breath for Liam again. "See if you can find Kael."
"Where are Jenna and Nia?"
"Over here," Eamon heard Jenna's voice coming through the smoke and dust preventing him from seeing the other side of the room.
"Is Nia with you?" Eamon asked, concerned he hadn't heard the seer's voice.
"She would answer you, but she's busy crying. I don't know why. Treasach just hit his head. I fixed him all up. He's just gotta sleep so his body can fully recover."
"They're tears of relief," Nia sniffled.
"Okay," Eamon exhaled. "I'm glad my cousin will be alright, but I think we have a more pressing issue with Liam over here. Brady's doing CPR."
"Brady," Jenna shriekd as she ran towards Eamon's voice. "Why didn't you say anything?"
"I've been busying keeping him alive," Brady grumbled.
"Nia, come check Liam out. I'm seeing some trauma, but not enough for him to need CPR. Definitely enough to knock him out, but something else is up."
Nia was reluctant to leave Treasach's prone form. Eamon seemed to pick up on it, and made his way to his cousin's side. Knowing her mate was safe enough for the time being, she ran over to Liam's side.
"Nia, time to do the seer stuff," Brady panted as he continued to keep his best friend alive.
"Right," she took a deep breath, feeling the need to center herself. She put her hands over Brady's hands on Liam's chest. "Oh my goodness," she whispered in shock. "Brady, you are literally the only reason he's still alive."
"That's what CPR is usually for," Jenna responded since Brady was a little occupied.
"No," the seer shook her head. "That's not what I meant. The spell was specifically to stop Liam's heart. Doing so would have not only killed him, but also Maeve and the baby before their time. Brady's fast thinking is the only thing that kept them all alive," Nia wiped a tear from her cheek. "Maeve must have dropped when his heart stopped, and started breathing again when Brady started CPR."
"Speaking of Brady and CPR," Jenna said. "Maybe you should do the seer thing and remove the spell. Brady's a werewolf, but he's hurt and I'm not sure how much longer he can keep this up."
"Right," Nia shook her head.
Jenna could see her friend scolding herself. "Nia," Jenna rolled her eyes. "You aren't a superhero. You aren't going to be perfect and this is all going to affect you. Just do your business and you can go back to your mate's side."
Nia saw the pain in Jenna's eyes at the thought of her own mate, but she was also right. When she focused on removing the spell, the black cloud started to form again. She didn't question why it had been weird light beams with Jacks and the black cloud with everyone else, but as long as her instincts did the job, she didn't care.
When Nia started shouting in Gaelic again, Liam shoved Brady's hands away. The cloud dissipated and everyone's focus was on Liam.
"Damnit Brady," Liam coughed. "Do you know how hard it is to break a wolf's ribs?"
"Jenna," Brady smiled at his friends antics. "Can you heal my friend here so we can move on?" His face became serious. "We still have quite a few people we need to find.
Jenna made quick work of healing both Brady and Liam so that they could be the search party.
"Who's still missing?" Brady asked.
"We have no idea," Jenna shrugged. "I think Eamon was looking for Kael, but go stopped when I needed to pull Nia from her mate's side to save Liam."
"So we have Treasach, Brady, and myself accounted for," Liam shook his head. "So we need to find Knox, Charles, Blair, Brian, Vladislav and which ever son he brought today, Dakota-"
"Shit," Jenna muttered. "Dakota first. His mate was writhing in pain when we left. I got distracted by pulling both Treasach and Liam back from the brink of death.
Eamon came through the settling dust with Dakota in his arms. Nia immediately panicked, but Treasach was right behind his cousin, holding an unconscious Volkov man. Unforutnately, there was a large piece of metal sticking out of Dakota's chest.
Brady hissed, "Silver."
"Seriously, that works on you people?"Jenna snorted in disbelief.
Eamon shook his head, "It won't kill us, but if you stab us with it, well, it burns like nothing else."
"Take the big piece of metal out of his chest," Jenna nodded. "Got it."
"I'll get it Jenna," Brady told her. "Focus on healing him. Liam, I know you're a little out of it, but I need you to go find someone else. We still have a lot of unaccounted for wolves."
They made quick work of Dakota who immediately opened his eyes and started helping without saying a word. Jenna knew he was a man of few words, but she couldn't think about anything right now. Everything was react. She needed to save all of these alphas or there was going to be so much more going against them. Luckily, as each man was healed, most of them were able to help them search. Jenna had not realized how many men had been in the meeting. She knew there were still wolves in the guest wing, and she assumed that the rest of the top wolves in the pack were focusing on keeping them away. Otherwise, they could have located everyone much more quickly.
An hour later Jenna felt like she could fall asleep standing up. Nia and most of the men looked much the same. Eamon and Brady had been avenging angels, dragging most of the injured into the hallway, giving Jenna easier access to them. The injured alphas were all a little testy, but she knew they were all calculating who it could have been.
"Nia," Jenna groaned. "Ask them how many more."
"Treasach, who's still missing?"
"Well, Taj and Amir were in the guest wing along with the other Volkovs, Chavdar wasn't here yet, and Cassius already went home." He seemed to be taking a head count. "We have both Russians, both Canadians, Dakota, Brady, Liam, and myself."
"We are still missing Alastar, Thanatos, Sullivan, and my brother," Liam looked murderous.
"No we aren't," Eamon growled. "Thanatos is unconscious in the hospital. I'll explain when we find our alpha and the others."
"Alastar's in the bunker," Dakota coughed, still recovering from the silver. "He told the women to tell us, apparently."
"Okay, so we only have to find Kael and Sullivan," Eamon ran his hand through his hair, unwilling to address the growing sense of dread in his chest.
How's Jenna? He heard his mate ask.
She's exhausted.
But not tense or on edge?
No, why?
I still think he's her mate, Eamon. If something serious had happened to him, then she would not just be exhausted.
Jacks, he sighed. The bomb was right under his spot at the table. If there was enough silver in it, or something pierced his heart and we haven't found him yet…
Don't borrow trouble, Eamon. Go look for him. Also if Sullivan is missing, she felt his shock. Sorry, I was eavesdropping, but if he's missing, well, I think he could be in on it. He was pretty buddy buddy with Thanatos.
Eamon roared, "Liam, Brady, I need you to focus on following Sullivan's scent. I'll find Kael. Jenna, stay with me."
Feeling the rage building in their beta, no one hesitated to follow his lead. Eamon quickly focused on trying to sniff his alpha out. It was difficult in a room that had such a heavy concentration of Kael's scent as well as the settling dust blocking some of the scents. He noticed an extra strong concentration under the only pile of debris that had not been completely undone. They had found Brian and Charles in the pile, and hadn't thought to return to the pile. He suddenly wished he had Jenna wait in the hallway. There was no telling what shape his friend would be in when the debris was removed.
"Jenna," Eamon took a deep breath. "I need you to turn around."
"Why?" she narrowed her eyes at him.
"Please, I can't remove all this debris with you watching. I'm almost positive Kael is under the pile, but it's a lot of weight, and I can't be sure what condition he's in."
Jenna couldn't stop the tears filling her eyes. "Heartbeat," she whispered.
"What?"
"Can you hear it?" she sobbed. "Can you hear a heartbeat?"
He let his wolf hearing take over since even his enhanced normal hearing wasn't picking anything up. It was at least a minute before his wolf heard the faint, very slow heartbeat.
"Treasach," Eamon shouted. "We need to get him out quickly. Help me. He's at the bottom of the pile, and I don't want to jar him too much by moving everything too quickly.
The two men worked in tandem to remove the debris, but they both heard the alpha's heartbeat slowing even more. He was bleeding out, and they weren't sure they would get to him in time. Honestly, it was a miracle he was still alive at all if his heartrate was dropping like this.
As soon as a foot was revealed, Jenna ripped off his shoe, knowing she could heal whatever unintentional damage she had done, but also knowing she needed the skin to skin contact.
"Treasach," Jenna cried out. "I need your super alpha powers, and I need Nia's healer stuff. Eamon, keep taking the debris off of him. I can't completely heal him until it's gone, but I can keep him alive."
Eamon was reassured when Kael's heartbeat started to strengthen. Knowing that Jenna would correct whatever was wrong with him, Eamon abandoned caution and began tearing through the debris pile, quickly unconvering an unrecongnizable Kael.
Jenna's sob tore at all of their hearts, and Nia's cry of shock just solidified the situation. Eamon looked at Kael's battered form and knew he shouldn't be alive. He was cut and bruised beyond recognition, and Jenna mentioned one of his lungs was crushed. Along with his liver eight ribs, both of his femurs, and one of his arms.
Eamon, you give her as much of our alpha power as you can. Kael cannot die. She won't survive it, even if I am wrong about the mate thing.
He realized his power was greater than anything Treasach could give her now that it was actually blended with Jacks's own power.
"Jenna," Eamon cautioned, not wanting to startle her. "I'm going to put my hand on your shoulder, focus on healing his lung and femurs first. Those are going to cause him the most pain and the most blood loss."
She nodded, and as soon as he touched Jenna, the light coming from her hands changed colors. Eamon felt the unfamiliar power flowing through him and realized that this power wasn't coming from him or his mate.
Nia saw the light that she caused to shoot form Jenna's hands change into the colors of the eyes of the triplets Jacks was carrying. She realized they were sending their own seer power through their mother and then through their father to help.
"What the hell?" Jenna asked in shock, but not willing to stop healing Kael, feeling his life force barely sticking around.
"The triplets are saying hi," Nia laughed with tears in her eyes.
"Treasach," Jenna laughed, feeling Kael's body quickly mend. "Their power puts yours to shame. Eamon, I think they'll make taking care of them very easy."
Brady and ran into the room, panting just as Kael's body finished healing. He was still unconscious, but Jenna couldn't do anything else.
"Eamon, we found Sullivan," Brady was out of breath, something that didn't usually happen to wolves.
"Where?"
"Trying to kill Thanatos."
Nia gasped, "Why?"
Eamon interrupted his packmate, "Trying to cover their damn tracks."
