A/N

Wow the reception of the last few chapters has been amazing! Thank you guys so much!

I've never been good at thinking of ideas for my writing so to know that this story is actually liked by many of you makes me so happy.

While it didn't take me too long to write, I had to edit this chapter several times in order to maintain the T rating because I'm incredibly cautious of unnerving some readers at the final hurdle of the fic. Therefore some parts of this may seem a bit jumpy from scene to scene but that'll probably be due to me cutting out bits and pieces here and there. Then again, I've had plenty of time because I've got flu :/

Anyway, I'll continue my notes at the bottom as I have been doing for the last few chapters...enjoy!

After breaking down the bedroom door, Chris hadn't left Nina out of his sight. At first, Nina had kicked and screamed and refused to go anywhere with him before he'd pulled out a gun and insisted on her cooperation. However, this was before Nina had attempted another escape and realised the seriousness behind Chris' threats. Without hardly any hesitation, he'd shot Nina in the leg and the graze had limited her further plans of escape.

Since then they'd spent hours sat side by side on the sofa watching the films that Chris had rented with his ex-wife's best interest at heart. While they had been together, Chris had always refused to watch such romantic films with her but now he seemed more eager than ever to see them. Nina, on the other hand, hated every minute of what used to be some of her favourite films. It was as if the whole event had sucked every ounce of romance out of them; replacing them with a darker, more twisted entity.

"I need to use the bathroom…" Nina mumbled while they were half way through watching their fourth film together, attempting to free herself from Chris' grip around her waist.

Chris stood up and smiled. "I'll lead the way."

"I need the loo. I have to pee." Nina clarified, just in case her ex-husband had misunderstood. "Alone."

"Aw c'mon Ni, don't be such a prude." Chris chuckled and took her arm. "Besides, you took a nasty fall yesterday…I should at least help you climb the stairs."

"It wasn't a fall…" Nina mumbled, still feeling the sting in her right leg despite the fact that Chris had turned doctor and bandaged up the bullet graze. "You know, I wish you'd have actually shot me in the leg. At least then I'd have passed out from losing a dangerous amount of blood."

"I'm hungry, are you?" Chris grinned, almost blissfully unaware of the situation around him – one that he'd made happen no less. "You were never the best cook but your casseroles were amazing."

"I hope you bloody choke…" Nina muttered as she sat at the table, staring at Chris' smug face as he ferociously ate the meal that Nina had been forced to cook for him at gunpoint; even though she'd deliberately burned it out of spite.

He smirked and nodded towards her own plate. "Aren't you going to eat yours?"

Nina forced a sickeningly sweet smile before sliding her plate off the table; sending the plate and its contents tumbling onto the wooden floor with a loud crash. "No."

"Aw come on, Ni. You've got to eat something." Chris stood up and brought his fork over, holding it out to her. "Here, have a bite."

Nina pursed her lips closed and turned away from him. She knew she was being childish but the whole situation was even more so – well, it was a mix of immaturity and complete insanity.

"Eat." Chris insisted, pushing the fork closer to her mouth. When Nina didn't respond, Chris took the gun out of his pocket; leaving Nina with very few options. With a glare she opened her mouth slowly and allowed her ex-husband to feed her the burnt casserole. "That's it. You want more?"

She shook her head and Chris retreated to his chair, satisfied with Nina's submission. "You should've brought Ollie. We could've had a real family meal."

Nina said nothing; her mind with Oliver and Miles. She didn't know how long she'd been gone for but knew that it warranted a significant amount of worry – especially since her voice message failed to send. What time was it anyway?

The boards over the windows blocked out any daylight so it could've been any time at all – midday or midnight – Nina truly had no idea. All she knew was that she wouldn't be able to attend her own wedding.

"I should call Oliver…" Nina said carefully. "He…he's probably missing me. A-And missing you too." She tried her best to sound convincing. "You could talk to him too. Maybe you could ask him to have dinner with us?"

Chris laughed, "do you think I'm an idiot? Nina, Nina, Nina…using my son to trick me…how cold…" Once again, he moved around the table and grabbed Nina's chin, forcing her to look directly at him. "I don't know why you have to make this so difficult. I've tried to be nice; I made your bed, I rented your favourite movies and now that I try to share a nice meal with you…you have to ruin it. Why can't you just accept that I'm trying?!"

"You shouldn't have to try!" Nina shouted, standing up sharply which caused her chair to fall backwards. "Chris, listen to me. I. Don't. Love. You. I…I should be getting married today! Miles will be thinking all sorts of horrible things but I love him! I love him and not you and you need to get that through your thick skull because me and you will never be together and that won't change, no matter how many times you shove that gun in my face!"

After a second of silence had passed, Chris grabbed Nina's arm tightly and dragged her into the front room. He picked up his own mobile phone and shoved it into her hands. "Call him! Call him and tell him the wedding's off. Tell him you don't love him because you've met someone else!"

Nina's hands trembled as she dialled the number and desperately waited for it to ring while Chris moved the gun firmly to her head as a warning.

Miles almost didn't answer. However he almost knew that Nina was calling and even though he was furious and hurt, he'd never been able to avoid Nina and today was no exception. He held the phone to his ear, his face emotionless yet desperate to hear just one word from his missing fiancée.

"Miles…hi…it's Nina." She whispered, holding the phone tightly; just as desperate to hear his voice. He didn't say a single word. "I'm sorry but…the wedding's off. Um, I just don't see any future for us because…"

Chris didn't appreciate Nina's choice of words and tapped her head lightly with the gun. "Be brutal…" He whispered with a sadistic grin.

"…Because I've met someone else." Nina felt her eyes tearing up at the thought of her fiancé's face on the other end. "I've been with him for months…I love him so much…"

"Keep going, Ni…" Chris murmured against her ear.

"I want to be with him!" She exclaimed, even though it practically killed her. "We were never going to work. You're married to your job and I…I can't stand playing second best to an office and a badge. You're so negligent and I can't take anymore because I deserve more and…"

Nina stopped. She could hear Miles' choked up sobs on the other end even though he tried to suppress them. And she couldn't take it.

With one swift movement, she swung her shoulder into Chris' body; causing him to fall and the gun to go off. Nina's ears were ringing and she became disorientated, but she still managed to hold onto the phone as Miles' worried voice echoed on the other end.

"Nina? Nina is everything alright? Where are you?"

She ran out of the room as best she could to try the back door, still slightly shaken by the gunshot. "Miles, Chris is alive! He's alive and I'm stuck in my old house with him!" She cried, kicking the door over and over again. "There's no way out and he's got a gun. I love you. I love you so much..." Nina heard Chris coming for her and tried her best to think of anything to say to her fiancé; just in case they would be her last. "Please, don't give up on me...don't give up on us. I won't stop loving you, I promise-"

Chris tackled Nina to the ground again and she dropped the phone.

"Nina!" Miles exclaimed, desperate for reassurance of his fiancée's safety; although she'd already confirmed the greatest thing possible. She did love him.

Chris grabbed the mobile while Nina was trapped beneath him. "Hey, Edgey. Sorry about the wedding…but you know Nina..." He chuckled, "she just can't stay away from me."

"Chambers…please let her go." Miles begged, standing up quickly. He knew that the only way to see Nina safe was to approach the situation as calmly as possible. "Nina's dangerously ill…she's sick and—"

"Damn right she's sick. Sick of spending her days in a boring life with you. Bye now!" Chris threw the mobile phone at the wall, shattering it into pieces.

Miles was left alone with the painfully loud bleeps that seemed to echo throughout the empty space of his study. He knew that Nina needed him immediately; Chris was clearly dangerous and delusional and he'd never heard his fiancée in such a terrified state. It scared him too; if Nina couldn't put on her brave face then what hope did he have? She'd always been Miles' rock; the one who always did the rescuing when he needed it. Whether it was during an earthquake, one of his nightmares or a simpler everyday crisis, Nina had become a constant in their resolve. But now it looked like Miles would have to be the one saving his fiancée and the role reversal almost terrified him.

However there was no time to waste and Miles found himself racing down the stairs with Gumshoe following behind desperately.

"Call the department!" He shouted hurriedly to the rest of their friends in the living room, grabbing his car keys. "Nina's in danger! Get every officer you can over to Robert Murray's home as soon as possible!"

"What's going on, sir? Nina's okay right?" Gumshoe asked repeatedly as they ran for the car. "Please, talk to me!"

"...You were right." Miles felt tears prick his eyes as he exhaled with an edge of relief. "Nina loves me. She really does…" He stopped; the realisation hitting him. Nina was being held hostage because she refused to give up on their relationship. Because he was the only person she wanted to be with. And while it made Miles overjoyed beyond belief, it filled him with a sense of dread as this devotion had put her in serious danger. Her life was being threatened because she was too committed to him and the chief prosecutor knew full well that Nina wasn't going to back down: she was stubborn. But at least she loved him.

Since Nina had begged Miles not to give up on her - on them - he refused to let anything happen to her. The only thing on his mind was seeing his fiancée safe and smiling back at him. Whatever the risk, Miles was determined to hold Nina in his arms once the chaos had settled. He was determined to see her dressed in white and by his side as they promised never to let the other go. He was going to mean every word, especially after the current ordeal.

When Miles saved Nina, he was never going to let her go again.

"You know, Nina. You're pretty selfish." Chris said, dragging her back into the front room. "I put all this together for you and you go telling Edgeworth that you love him. Why not me, huh?"

"Where do I begin?" Nina groaned, rubbing her wrist when he let go. "Although I don't think there will be enough time since Miles will be here soon."

"Don't!" Chris shouted, slapping her hard across the face. "Don't ever say his name again. Don't say that."

"Fine. How about, 'my fiancé'?" Nina asked with a smirk. "Or 'my future husband'?"

Again, Chris hit Nina and caused her to fall back onto the sofa, her lip bleeding.

"What did I ever see in you?" She spat bitterly, touching her lip. "You might as well kill me now because I'm not going to run off into the sunset with you. Ever."

Chris' face didn't even alter; it seemed that he wasn't even paying attention anymore. Like he'd well and truly lost his connection with reality.

"I don't even know what you plan to achieve here…" Nina ran a hand through her hair; feeling both tired and frustrated with the entire situation as Chris joined her on the sofa as if everything was perfectly normal. Of course she was also worried, what with her ex-husband still brandishing a gun, but her father had always taught to her to stare down the barbell of a gun; as if losing your life in that way was honourable.

Apparently, it was the typical detective dream to go out in a blaze of glory; to die a truly fearless hero at the hands of the most dangerous of people. Nina thought it was ridiculous but was willing to remain calm – if only to increase her chance of seeing her son and Miles again. She doubted that Chris would've caused her any serious harm due to his fixation but, then again, he'd already grazed her leg with a bullet. Moreover, Nina had never imagined that her ex-husband was capable of going off the deep end…but there they were.

And Chris was now far beyond reason. There would be no going back for him.

It was impossible to reach him and Nina felt a tightening in her chest as she realised the terrifyingly slim chance of them both leaving the old Murray house alive.

4 MORE CHAPTERS TO GO! *sobs uncontrollably*

I will not guarantee a happy or sad ending yet even though my mind has decided on an ending which I believe is fitting.

My goal is to try and get this finished before the end of summer since I'm starting my final year before university so my life will probably be one big hectic mess from September onwards.

Thank you for sticking with the story; I'd love to hear what you guys are thinking in the review section, or as a PM I don't mind. Frankly, nearly every time I get a review/message where Chris is mentioned negatively I laugh so hard because the names you guys have for him are brilliant. Even though words could never describe how terrible he is (and will become.)

Next update should be within a 7-10 days because I'm super eager :)
