Chapter 34: Time is of the Essence
Soul is in his workshop, cleaning his puppets as they watch his movement around the room. He wipe off the smudge on his puppet and sigh in exhaustion before putting the rag down on the table. He look at Night Demon and smile "well, you and your brethren are finally clean." The puppet blink his eyes before chuckling "don't laugh young man. It almost took me three hours to get all these nasty gunk off of you. The least you should do is say thank you." The puppets bow their head in gratitude making Soul smile at them "you're welcome."
"Hey Soul." Soul jumped at the voice as his puppets went limp right when Black*Star enter the room "are you talking to your puppets again?" Soul turn his head and blinked before smiling sheepishly.
"Maybe." Black*Star shook his head as he looked around the room in curiosity "by the way, why are you here?" He look at Soul, who is fixing Black Armor's shield on his arm.
"Nothing just want to see what you're doing." Black*Star stop to look at the puppets that are lined up on a table. He raise an eyebrow and stare at the puppets. They all had round heads, slim torso, long claws and bladed limb for legs. They also had flame tattoos on their body in purple-pinkish color "Piper says that you go in this room for puppetry." He said, walking up to the puppets.
"Puppetry?" Soul said in confusion before blinking in realization "Oooh no, Black*Star. I think what Piper means is that I come in here to clean and fix my puppets. You know trying to make sure they're in their tip-top shape." Black*Star hummed as he stop in front of puppet, who had fox ears and nine tails. He stare at it, leaning in close before Soul spoke "lean in any closer, he'll bite your face off." Black*Star jumps back in shock and he swear he thought there was laughter coming from the puppet.
"It's alive?!" Soul chuckles almost evilly before he glance at him.
"Yeah because they have souls inside of them." He went to another puppet who is wearing a joker hat and jester collar around his neck. "I want them to feel, make them express their emotions like they're real human beings." He straighten out the collar and step back before nodding in satisfaction "also Kitsune not the only one who will bite your face. Do that with any of these puppets then they will bite, no matter what you put in front of them." Black*Star stare at Soul in disbelief.
"Does they do that to you, babe?"
"Sometimes especially when I check their teeth." He frowns as his glare at his puppets "the last time I check Night Demon's teeth, he nearly bit my finger off." Suddenly, a chuckle was heard causing Black*Star to stare at the demon puppet "shut the hell up, you asshole." This time the puppet laugh as his eyes glow with energy.
"What the fuck!?" Black*Star said in fear as Night Demon laugh. Soul walks up to him and flick him on the forehead making the puppet stop and stare at his master.
"Stop scaring my boyfriend." The puppet snickers before Soul sigh "but yeah they know not to bite when I'm checking their face. Besides I got quick reflexes so they won't bite me." Soul then pet his head causing a purr to rumble from his puppet "sometimes when they bite and I show pain, they lick my pain away to make it better." He smiles at his puppets as they all wake up from their nap "so you boys were sleeping huh?"
The puppets yawn before smiling at their master "they almost look creepy but I would be lying if I say they don't look..." He stop, trying to find the right word "cute." Soul chuckles as his puppet stare at his lover. If he doesn't know any better, he thought they are pouting which he thinks is adorable. "Soul are they pouting?"
Soul laughs "yes they are because they're cute." They pout even more, puffing up their cheeks. Black*Star watch as they pout even more, crossing their arms in mock anger.
'Oh my god that is adorable.' He thought while the puppets glare at their laughing master. As they glare at their master, Piper came in the room; in her witch outfit before she spoke.
"What's up, Soul." Soul points at the ceiling, still chuckling "of course." She turns her head to Black*Star "how you doing, ninja boy?" Black*Star flinch at the nickname but cover it up by shrugging his shoulders.
"I don't know... just watching Soul tease his puppets." He then raise an eyebrow "by the way Soul, how many puppets do you have?" Soul stops laughing and blink. He stare at his lover for two minutes before answering.
"20 puppets and they all boys." Soul stretch his arms "I build them when I was little and man it was fun." He put his arms and look at his cousin "say Piper?"
"Yeah dummy."
"Where are you going?" Piper blink behind her visor before speaking.
"I'm going with my mother to look around Nigeria. She said there's something going on."
"Like what?" Piper walked up to Soul and whisper his ear, leaving Black*Star staring at them in confusion. After she pulls back, Soul nod "okay be careful and tell grandma Mesa that I said hi."
"Will do." She wave before running out the door. After she left, Black*Star turns to Soul.
"What did she tell you?" Soul went back to his puppets and smirk.
"Nothing."
"Oh come on, tell me."
"Nope"
"Soul."
"Love you." Black*Star pout, crossing his arms before he mumbled.
"Love you too."
Deep in the forest of Nigeria, a lone man is limping through the forest, clutching his arm in his hand. A pain expression written on his face as blood seeping through his wounds. Cuts and bruises are covered all over his body with cuts on both his arms, a big cut on his leg, a big wound on his left side being covered by a strip of fabric, and he had a black bruise on his cheek, a cut on his lower lip and a black eye.
He hiss in pain before he stop "sir... sir are you there?"
"Loud and clear sergeant." Sid said "did you find their location?"
"Yes, they're in the southeastern of Nigeria."
"But where?" Before the man, a voice interrupt him.
"There you are." The man turn around to see Piper sitting on the tree with Medusa "now don't tell me you're trying to give away our position."
"Oh god." He back away before Piper jump off the tree and tackle him to the ground.
"Sergeant? Sergeant can you hear me?" Piper took out his earpiece and crush it in her hand.
"That's enough of that shit." She grin evilly, showing her canine teeth "now are you ready to die?" The man spat blood on her face. Piper chuckle before she wipe the blood off her cheek "that's cute."
"You fucking witch. You will die."
"Sorry I die the first time and I'm not dying again, my friend." Piper said as her mother came up them "now tell me, Sergeant. Are you spying on us?" The man glares at her as she giggle "silent type huh?" She close her eyes and whispered "Hummingbird Birdie Bird Tweet Tweet Hummingbird." Suddenly, her hand began to glow white-bluish "Aura Blade." A blade protruded from her wrist before she point it at his neck "okay listen and listen well, cause I'm only to ask you once. Why are you here? Are you spying on us? And what is the DWMA planning?" The man chuckle causing a frown appear on both witches.
"What's so funny?" Medusa ask.
"Nothing it just... you really expect me to tell you?" Piper life up her visor and lick her dry lips.
"I don't know you tell me." He laugh making them stare at him in confusion "why are you laughing?"
"Because I can't wait until whatever plans you have just blows up in your face." Piper raise an eyebrow "I mean, your cousin Soul must be really desperate to use Pariah to destroy the academy... which I won't lie that is a good plan but soon... that plan of his will fail just like your mother's plan." Medusa's eyes widen before she took a glance at Piper, who had her bangs covering her eyes. The man smiles before he put his hand on her wrist, right where the bracelet is "he's clever and I'll give him that but we all know that when his plan fails." He grins "and his friends see who he really is then you, your cousin, your family and every one of you witches will perish into smithereens."
Medusa stare at man, who is laughing while Piper just stood motionless. While he laugh, blood begin to boil inside her veins as she gritted her teeth in anger. "And you know what, your cousin is nothing but a big failure." He laugh again before suddenly, a shock expression is written on his face. Blood began to spew from his mouth as a white-bluish blade is jabbed in his throat. Piper glare at the man with full hatred before she lean down and spoke.
"You know, for a sergeant, you really got some massive balls for saying that about my cousin." She frown "so in kindness I decided to end your misery. Rest in peace, motherfucker." She took out her blade as the man lay there, motionless while his hand slip off her wrist. Piper then stood up and walk to her mother "let's go back, mom." She said, walking to the tree and pulling out a black board with purple streak from the bushes.
Medusa raise an eyebrow "what happen to your wings?"
"Me and Soul stop using them since it make us look like fairies, so he build this board for me." Suddenly, two wings like appendages appear out of the board "to tell you the truth, it's actually a glider." She put it on the ground and stand on the glider before it began to levitate above the ground.
"It look nice." Piper grins.
"I know and I can't wait to tell Soul that it works." She then look at her mother "by the way, Soul says hi." Medusa smile softly.
"Tell him that I said hi and give me a call when he had the chance."
"Will do." Piper said as Medusa summon her broom and sits on it.
"Well, let's go." The two witches fly up to the sky and enjoying the view. Unbeknownst of them, when the man grab her wrist, he actually put a hidden camera on her bracelet that can turn into a tracking device. This was the DWMA plan all along and it seem it had worked.
"You sure you got this, Soul?" Soul stare at the mirror, which showing the image of great-great-great grandmother Arachne at her castle. He yawns before speaking.
"Yes I'm sure and besides they don't know what I have in store for them." He then narrow his eyes "by the way have you found the culprit for possessing my mother yet?" Arachne shook her head "fuck me in the keyhole."
"Soul."
"Sorry grandma Arachne." He said, smiling sheepishly.
"Don't worry, we'll find this culprit but you need to focus on your plan, okay."
"Okay."
"And Soul."
"Hmm?" Arachne smile softly at him.
"Love you, my little spider." Soul smile.
"Love you too." He ended the call before stretching "man who knew making sure that my plan don't fail is hard work."
"I'm back, dummy." Soul turn his head to see Piper leaning on his door "Mom said hi and give her a call when you had a chance."
"I call her when she gets home." Piper shook her head "by the way did you found the spy?"
"Yep and what's weird about him is that he laugh right when he's facing death." Soul raise an eyebrow, turning around in his swivel chair.
"Bullshit."
"It's the truth." Soul stare at her in shock "I ask him some question and he said 'You really expect me to tell you?' like what the hell. And he even have some balls to say some shit about you, in my presence." Piper growls silently "he's lucky I didn't cut off his balls for saying that to me." She smirk when she saw a pain look pass over her cousin's face "dude you ain't the one having your balls rip off your body."
"I know but it still hurts." Piper laugh before smiling.
"Well I'm going to take a shower later." She wave before she stop "also your invention works." She left the room, right when Soul grins in joy.
"Hell yeah."
Somewhere deep in the forest, a dark green van is sitting there, being covered by some plants. Inside the van is Azusa, Nygus and Sid looking at the cameras. Azusa push up her glasses, frowning "It seems that Piper is in the tree but we still don't know where they at."
"Sergeant Clark said that they're in the southeastern part of Nigeria." Sid answered. Nygus frowns.
"That's true but where is the question?" She walk to the map of Nigeria "it could be anywhere."
"But ma'am." She turn her head to the soldier by the cameras "it shows us the image of a waterfall."
"What kind of waterfall?"
"An Agbokim waterfall." Everyone turn their head to Azusa, who watching the camera as Piper came out of the bathroom, wearing her regular clothes while drying her hair "it's situated 17 kilometers from Ikom, close to Nigeria-Cameroon border." She then walked to the map. "It's also located on the cross river and it was ideal spot for picnics. So it must be near the waterfall." Her eyes widen "soldier, turn on the tracking device and put up the map of Nigeria." The soldier nod his head before turning on the device, right when Piper left the room. The screen went blank before showing the map of Nigeria as they wait for the device to turn on. Suddenly, a red dot appears located close to Nigeria-Cameroon border.
"10 meters from Agbokim Waterfall. We got them." Everyone cheers as Nygus contact Lord Death.
"Sir, we found them. Now we'll wait for your orders." On the other side, Lord Death hums before talking.
"I'll send the others but make sure they don't know you're there, understand?"
"Understood." She hung up and look at the others "Lord Death is going to send the others to our location. But he wants us to not let them know we're here."
"But for how long I might ask?" Everyone turn their head to see Spirit leaning on the door "not to brag or anything but once Soul find out we're here then we are good as dead."
"Spirit's right." Marie came out from behind him "Soul is not the type of person who would ignore this like it's nothing."
"Not only that but we keep sending our soldiers to find their hideout and I think sooner or later Soul will put two and two together, and come after us." Spirit step inside the van along with Marie and frown "remember we don't want them to get suspicious."
"You're right about that." Nygus look at the screen and frown "this is one dangerous business and letting them know is like asking for a death wish. We had to be careful or we'll be sitting duck out here." Everyone nod their head in an agreement. No one wants to be killed off by Soul or Pariah since they are very dangerous and once they know that their enemy is here in Nigeria then it will be a full out bloodbath. Marie breathe in and out, trying to calm her beating heart as Azusa look at her in worried.
She still remember the day that half of them were being eaten alive by Pariah. She shuddered 'who knew those things can become vicious.' Azusa sigh before pushing up her glasses "okay everyone let's get back to business."
"So Black*Star."
"What?"
"Did you ever accidentally kiss a tiger before?"
"Hell no." Flutter and Mizune laugh as Black*Star glare at them "it's not funny."
"Yes it is, cutie." Black*Star pouts making Flutter laugh even harder "but seriously tho, you never kiss a tiger?"
"The only tiger I kiss is Soul." He blush as the girls cooed at him "oh shut up." Suddenly, a red-purplish portal appears before Belial came out. He stretch as the portal close behind him before he heard a voice "Belial." He look at Black*Star and smile.
"Hi little star." Black*Star got up and hug his friend, who hug him before they pulled back "how are you?"
"Good and what about you?"
"Splendid." He look up and smile "hi girls."
"Hi cute demon."
"Nya~" Flutter squealed while Mizune roll her eyes. Belial chuckles before looking at his friend "so little star, you must be wondering why I'm here."
"Yeah why are you here, Belial?" Black*Star crossed his arms as his demon friend frown slightly. He look away for a few second before looking at him again "Belial?"
"I know something different from the angels... you know the one we fought." Black*Star raise an eyebrow.
"Really? And what did you find out?" Belial bit his lips, shifting on his feet, nervously.
"Their appearance are different from what they look like before. I didn't notice because I was too busy fighting, but once I have some free time on my hands, well, I got a good look at them." He rub his arm as he continued "they didn't have spikes on their body or claws or fork-like tongue. They didn't even have bone wings on their back or fangs." Belial sigh "just looking at them kinda remind me of some new type of demons."
"So you're saying that we're facing some imposters?" Belial shrugs.
"I don't know but I think something must have happen to them. I wish Uriel was here because he knows what to do." Black*Star said nothing, just stare at the demon before he spoke.
"You don't mind if I help you right?"
"Nope because we're friends."
"Good." He grins "how about you find some clues and tell me what you find." Belial nods before he open the portal.
"It's nice seeing you, little star. Come visit me when you had a chance okay."
"Okay later Belial."
"Later little star." He disappears into the portal before it close behind him. Black*Star sigh as his surrogate sisters stare at him before he turns around and grins.
"So did you ever kiss a snake before?"
"Hell no." Black*Star laugh.
"Okay grandma Mesa take care."
"You too sweetie." Soul wave goodbye to Medusa before they hung up. He sigh, leaning back onto his chair as he stare up at the ceiling. As he stare, tingling feeling appears in his stomach making him raise his eyebrow. He sat up and put his hand on his stomach, as he stare in confusion.
"That's weird... it only happens when something bad going on, but I don't sense no danger." He said. Soul sigh before getting up from his bed "oh well time for me to check on my children." As he said that, another tingling feeling appears but he ignore it. Usually he'll followed his instincts but seeing how they're not in danger yet, he don't see the problem, and trust me, he knows when there are dangers but nothing is happening.
Soul walk out of his room and smile "besides it's not like they found our location or spying on us." If only Soul knows how right he is because coming from Death City are jet planes and they are heading their way to Nigeria.
