My Love

Chapter 37

Road Ahead

"Curious." Eve thought as she watched an old man with a fairly large hat, bells on his feet, and a walking stick about his height walking in front of her. She understood the hat, and the stick, but why bells on his feet?

They had been walking now for at least three hours and the only thing that seemed to entertain her was that thought. Well that and why the leaves turned blue when the children made loud noises at them. It seemed to entertain them to keep trying.

"Wolves...they use the bells to scare the wolves off." The Doctor finally noticed his daughters quizzical stare. "If you were to come across a bear wolf...which is bigger then the bears at home and look like wolves...then more then likely you'll turn to lunch." He said. Now that made sense to her. She looked back around at the man who turned and looked at her. His mouth had some rotted teeth. She was wondering if they had toothpaste on this planet, and for some reason wondered also if they had a dentist. A lot of the people here didn't have very good teeth. But then she smiled to herself thinking. 'Perhaps I look strange to them with my teeth being white and brushed...' then she kind of giggled to herself.

"I noticed they don't have very good teeth...and I was brushing my teeth earlier. I realized they must not have known what I was doing."

"No they wouldn't would they." The Doctor chuckled and looked up. Being taller then both River and Eve he could see the front of the line. "Looks like we're stopping for a bit. Theirs a fresh stream right over there. Why don't we get some water?" The Doctor walked over.

"Don't we need bells or something?" Eve joked. The Doctor rolled his eyes and shook his head.

"I"m pretty sure with how good your ears are you could hear the bear wolf before it even gets to us." He said and motioned for her to go into the woods with him. Besides everyone else was doing it too. He was sure it wouldn't be to hard to get to the water. He was wrong.

"Lines...I hate lines..." The Doctor crossed his arms and leaned against a tree.

"Papa don't lean on that one." She pulled the Doctor off and used a rough branch to push the spores off.

"Lines make me stupid...do you see me being stupid?" He huffed.

"Papa...your brain is tired. I'm sure you didn't get much sleep last night." Eve looked at her father who wasn't smiling. Actually he hated when she called him out like that.

"Eve..."

"Im not going to apologize so don't even ask."

"And she's in her 30s?" River asked having came up behind them to hear her.

"Yes...and I'm sure she's a bit uptight about the trip."

"No...she's just a teenager." River said and looked at her diary and then at the Doctor..."So where are we?"

"I figured that was self explanatory." Eve pointed to the trees. "In the woods." Eve knew next to nothing about the diary only that her mother would fish it out and spend hours with the Doctor next to the fire when she was really really young. Now that her past has finally started to be remembered she remembers some things with the Doctor only that he had a plum suit on rather then the tweed jacket. She had found the jacket on the TARDIS and knew he'd wear it one day so left it alone.

"Shes a bit..."

"She don't want to share him is what it is. Happened to my wife when I married her with two daughters from a previous marriage. One girl excepted me while the older one didn't like me. Never knew why." The old man with bells on his feet said. "Wife constantly told me that she'd come round. But when it came down to it when she got married she wanted me to give her to her husband. She'll need you one day in the most deeply meaningful ways, while in others she'll just stand back and never smile. You'll never know why and she'll never tell you why. But some day she'll need you more then anyone else." River looked at the man for a moment before looking around at Eve whose glare seemed to want to turn to tears when she looked away.

"Doctor...what did I do?" The Doctor shook his head and shrugged.

"I think we're both out of the loop. She just never talks about her past much. Only that her sister Avarii beat her up a lot." The Doctor look at River. The look on her face was brand new and for the life of him it kind of hurt to see. For once the River he knew was that of a new mother looking at her baby and didn't know what to do.

"Their are more?" She asked.

"Their are seven of them."

"And I'm going to mess up seven of them?"

"According to Eve you love all of them...allthough now that I think of it...I don't think I ever met the seventh one." River shook her head and looked up when she saw Eve walk back over with a full waterbottle for herself and her father.

"You know her...she's spent more time with you then any of us. We all know her simply as Mute. But I haven't seen her for...well...twenty years I think."

"Mute!" The Doctor stood up and looked down at Eve like lightning struck twice in the same spot. "I haven't heard from her since she went to school. How..." He suddenly realized something. "Did I ever name her?" Eve thought of it for a second and laughed.

"Yes you named her."

"Whats she doing now? How is she?"

"Well...last I heard she's a school teacher. But its been twenty years so that could have changed." True she couldn't have stayed as a school teacher and continued to look young. Even the laws of makeup couldn't help.

"School teacher huh? I figured she'd open up a restaurant."

"So did I actually but who knew right." Eve sighed and sat down on a rock before looking into her water bottle. "I figured she'd call for Christmas or...birthdays. She's my sister after all."

"Theres something thats been bothering me since she showed up." The Doctor stopped when Eve stood up.

"That questions answer is between me and her." She said and walked toward the road again.

"I...think she's got a secret." River whispered.

"Yeah...me too." Eve never not told him something before. It must have been very deep, or very bad. He wasn't to sure about how this made him feel.
