Days like these made Liesel wish that she could drink like a normal person and get a hangover instead of being plagued with visions that she couldn't control. Liesel could do with a very stiff drink as this whole atmosphere was very tense. Clearly Bonnie and Shelia were not happy about this entire situation but they were going along with it, doing their chanting in some weird language because Stefan had promised to kill all the remaining vampires. It was very interesting in a weird way despite the fact that Liesel knew that she had pretty much put herself at the top of the witches hit list by forcing them to open the tomb. Anyone else might be worried but Liesel pissed people off constantly, humans and vampire so a couple of witches was nothing to bother her. Although she did have a pissed off best friend, despite Damon telling her that Stefan couldn't ever stay mad at her, Liesel knew he was currently very annoyed and maybe angry with her about the way she had done things. But in Liesel's defense she wouldn't have had to go around blackmailing people if he hadn't decided to double cross Damon in the first place. However, Liesel knew she had to fix this with Stefan as with Damon leaving town with Katherine, the younger Salvatore would be her only friend in town and she needed them to be on good terms. After having friends for the first time in her entire life, Liesel wasn't sure if she could go back to a life of being constantly lonely even after knowing Damon and Stefan for a few months. They were things that made her feel safe and less alone in her otherwise isolate and awkward life. As Liesel stood and waited for Bonnie and Shelia to finish, she felt a warm hand slip in to her own and glancing down Liesel saw what a hand was holding hers. Looking up Liesel saw that it was Damon much to her surprise.
"Scared are we?" Liesel quietly quipped and she saw Damon try to force himself not to smirk at that. She was going to miss being under his skin and pushing his buttons but this wasn't the end for them, they were just going on their separate ways for a while. They were going to see each other again, especially since Liesel was going to have to name her first born son after Damon.
"No I just figured that I'd give you my hand in case you were nervous about all of this Little Caffrey." Damon coolly replied and Liesel wasn't sure whether to laugh or roll her eyes, so she didn't do either.
"Me scared? As if but feel free to continue to hold my hand if makes you feel better scardy cat." Liesel retorted and just as the words had come out from her mouth, the flames on the torches surrounding the tomb flared up and Liesel couldn't help but jump ever so slightly.
"I thought you weren't scared." Damon asked in amusement and judging by the smirk on his face and the twinkle in his eyes, Liesel could see that her dark haired best friend was very much enjoying this, much to her dismay.
"I'm not, I was just startled. There is a difference." Liesel corrected in a know it all tone of voive.
"If you say so." Damon murmured as the door to the tomb creaked open and Liesel wasn't sure how to react to this so she pulled a funny face at Damon and he just responded with an either funnier one, which caused her to chuckle. Liesel was very grateful that she had someone to act inappropriate with inappropriate situations, although it made Liesel realize that her and Damon should probably never go to a funeral together. The two of them were wholly inappropriate and had no place interacting with real people.
"It worked!" Bonnie squeaked in delight.
"Of course it worked." Shelia replied with less enthusiasm.
"Brother we have some fires to build." Damon instructed and a particularly not happy Stefan looked at Elena, giving her an affectionate pat on her shoulder.
"I'm gonna go get the gasoline, I'll be right back." Stefan said with a warm manner as he ascended the stairs that would take him out of the tomb and back further up to where the remains of Old Fell's church stood. From where she stood Liesel could see Damon looking around at everyone but he waited a while before he spoke.
"You ready?" Damon questioned looking directly at Elena.
"What?
Damon chuckled before turning to Bonnie and Shelia, Liesel wasn't sure what he was doing until he grabbed Elena and then it came to her. He was using Elena as leverage to make sure that he could come back out after he had got Katherine. It was a smart move since the Bennett witches weren't exactly the most trustworthy of people. "You think I'm gonna go in there by myself so you can seal me in?"
"Don't take her in. I'll bring the walls down." Shelia threatened and Liesel just rolled her eyes, she wasn't surprised that something like this had happened.
"You'll bring the walls down if I don't. You think I trust you?
"As much as I trust you." Shelia retorted.
"Enough. Both of you. Look, he needs leverage. He needs to know that you're not going to shut the door when he gets inside. I get it. I'll go." Elena stated playing the mediator and Liesel was glad that they were making process as Damon picked up one of the torches that was in the circle, the tomb did look all dark and creepy in there after all and inside were very hungry and desiccated vampires who hadn't eaten in a hundred and forty five years. Liesel watched as Damon and Elena made their way closer towards the tombs entrance but before they went inside Damon turned back.
"Caffrey you coming?" Damon asked but it wasn't like an unsure question, it was more of a statement like Damon asking whether or not she was becoming because she was still standing where he had left her. It was rather sarcastic and reminded Liesel of when Spencer was in a hurry and she was moving too slow for his liking.
"Like I'd let you go in there without me after all the hard work I've done to get you here Salvatore." Liesel quipped with a bright smile and she walked over towards Damon and Elena, took the torch out of Damon's hands and taking the quietest deep breath Liesel crossed the threshold of the tomb. Naturally it was cold, not to mention very dark and dusty. The torch provided enough lighting that Liesel could make things out and almost close to the entrance to the tomb was a desiccated vampire. It looked like a mummy that was still a bit juicy and Liesel had to admit that it was possible the weirdest thing that she had ever seen. She was a bit freaked out but she felt a bit better when she felt a warm hand on the small of her back. Liesel didn't have to look back to know that it was Damon as she was very familiar with his touch. "So you ready to live happily ever after?"
"Have been ready for a 145 years or have you forgotten that?" Damon sarcastically replied and Liesel allowed herself to laugh as they slowly began to make their way further into the tomb. Liesel was taking slow and steady steps as she didn't want to walk in a hurry so she could get out of here quicker. They needed to take their time with this as she didn't want to miss Katherine, so she figured taking her time would be the best option and it wasn't like any of these vampires were in a rush or going anywhere for that matter. As they walked through the tomb Liesel could have sworn that she could hear voices, quiet ones but none the less she could still hear voices throughout the tomb.
"What is that?!" Elena questioned.
"They can sense the two of you." Damon replied and Liesel would never admit this out loud, out of fear of being mocked by Damon for the rest of her life but that did freak her out a lot. So pretending like she was fine Liesel carried on walking into the tomb, using the torch to guide her way.
The tomb was much bigger than Liesel had anticipated and the vampires were so sparsely spread out but Liesel vigilantly continued going further onwards. Liesel wasn't exactly sure which one was Katherine as the bodies had broken down so much, it was hard to tell which vampires was the exact double of Elena. But Liesel had Damon by her side and she figured he would know which one Katherine was. But as they walked further along in the tomb, checking each vampires that they passed Liesel noticed that Damon was suspiciously quiet and that was quite worrying at one point she thought she heard a scream but quickly dismissed it as who would be screaming in here? Liesel had been keeping a tally of all the vampires that they had passed and after they had reached the back of the tomb, or rather the end of it Liesel had only counted 26 vampires. Something was wrong, Liesel knew it as did Damon and he wasn't happy about it as he kicked a piece of dirt.
"She's not here." Damon said through gritted teeth.
"Damon she must be here, we must have missed her! This place is like a maze…" Liesel said in an attempt to soothe him but Damon was too worked up, he was pacing up and down. This wasn't good at all and Liesel needed him to calm down because him getting all worked up wasn't good in the slightest.
"We have checked every vampire in here Liesel! Katherine is not in here!" Damon yelled, getting worked up by the second.
"I will check, okay? We have probably missed her as she's probably in some cranny of this dump that we completely missed." Liesel assured Damon with a smile as she held her hand up to one of the walls of the tomb and closed her eyes. Taking a deep Liesel focused on Katherine, repeating her name several times and waited, but there was nothing. There was no image of Katherine, or a vision of her despite the fact that Katherine had to be in here. But Liesel quickly realized that Katherine wasn't in here and probably never had been because if she had been then Liesel would have been able to see it, pick up on some imprint of her that she left behind. But Liesel couldn't. Opening her eyes Liesel looked at Damon and it seemed like he already knew. "I am so sorry Damon."
"No!" Damon yelled out but it seemed like a more strangled cry and Liesel just didn't know what to do or what to say, all she could do was just stand there. Her best friend was falling apart; he was realizing that the woman that he had spent the better part of 145 years trying to rescue wasn't in the tomb.
"Damon!"
Liesel was surprised to see Stefan come running towards them but she was glad to see him as he probably knew what to do, what to say and she needed his help. Stefan knew Damon better than she did, so he would know what to do. As right now Liesel was trying to keep calm but inside her head she was freaking out big time. This no Katherine thing was not in the plan in the slightest.
"She's not here…" Damon quietly said and Liesel could feel the heartache in every word and she couldn't help but feel for Damon, he had worked so hard for this to fall so hard. It was so wrong; Damon had deserved this. He had deserved to have Katherine back and she wasn't here, she had never been here and it wasn't fair.
"What?" Stefan questioned as Damon pulled out the blood bag that he had been carrying for Katherine, Liesel had earlier overheard him make a joke about Katherine was going to be hungry.
"She's not here!" Damon yelled one more as he threw the blood bag and the way, the force of the impact against the wall caused it splatter across the wall. But Liesel didn't take much notice of that, it was the look of anguish and hurt that was all too clear in Damon's eyes and Liesel could swear that she could hold out her hand and almost touch Damon's pain and feel it for herself. It was unbearable. This wasn't the way that things were supposed to be.
"Damon, we need to get out of here." Stefan began but Damon was just out of it, completely ignoring everything around him like he was in some state of denial.
"It doesn't make sense. They locked her inside."
"If we don't leave now, we're not getting out." Stefan clarified and Liesel didn't like what that suggested in the slightest, there was feeling in the pit of a stomach and she had a feeling it has something to do with the Bennett's.
"What are you talking about Stefan?" Liesel questioned,
"Bonnie and Sheila never lifted the seal, Emily's original seal on this tomb allowed vampires to enter it but not exit." Stefan replied and after all the developments that had happened in the last few minutes, it took Liesel a couple of moments to piece together all this information.
"Wait… So are you telling me that they agreed to this knowing that you wouldn't be able to come out? They've been playing us this all time." Liesel demanded and Stefan slowly nodded confirmed everything and Liesel felt her blood starting to boil. There was a reason why the people in this town were scared of her and she was going to put the fear of Liesel Caffrey into the Bennett's. Liesel didn't care that they were witches, they had messed with her and the people she cared about and Liesel wasn't going to let them get away with that.
"Yes. But Elena's convinced them to lift the seal so we can get out but we don't have much time." Stefan said and Liesel caught sight of Elena in the distance and she gave her an appreciative nod. Maybe Elena wasn't as bad as she thought.
"How could she not be in here?" Damon quietly said, bringing Liesel back to the other current problem that was right in front of her. Now more than ever Liesel really wished that she could drink.
"It's not worth spending all of eternity down here. She's not worth it!" Stefan said as he stood in front of Damon and attempted to literally shake some sense into Damon.
"No!" Damon retorted, angrily pushing Stefan away with eyes still as vacant as ever. It was like the brightness in them had suddenly been put out and Liesel couldn't stand to see Damon in so much pain. Liesel knew what she had to do, she needed to safe. Liesel had to safe Damon from spending all of eternity in here as a desiccated mummy before she could help him with this Katherine situation. But she would save him, Liesel was adamant about that. Liesel wanted to cry. Her heart was breaking for Damon but she needed to be strong, she needed to hold it together so she could get him and Damon out of her. Walking over to Damon, he tried to push her away but Liesel wouldn't let him. She kept trying and eventually Damon stopped and Liesel placed her hands on either side of his face.
"Listen to me, I will find her Damon, no matter how long it takes I will find her for you but to do that I need you to come out of this tomb. You can't stay here, if you don't leave then you'll be as trapped as all the other vampires here. I promise you Damon you will figure this out but I need to you come out of the tomb. I can't do this without you Damon, you're my friend and I need you. We need you and we all have to leave before it's too late. If you get stuck in here, I'll never let you live it down. I'll spend the rest of my natural life bitching at you from the door until the end of my days.
"Okay." Damon quietly murmured and so the four of them made their way out of the tomb, when Liesel stepped out she could see that Bonnie and Shelia were just finishing some chant, which caused the tomb door to close and torches to die out after Elena and Stefan had come out of the tomb. Liesel watched as Stefan and Elena embraced each other before taking off somewhere. Liesel didn't know and she certainly wasn't going to ask. Instead she just looked at Damon who looked straight back her but it was like he couldn't see her, as if Liesel wasn't there. Damon said nothing, instead he started to walk away and he passed by Liesel before stopping momentarily. They were standing shoulder to shoulder but facing opposite ways, Liesel didn't know what to say but she felt a warm hand gently brush against her own and she gave it a reassuring squeeze and then Damon was off. Liesel couldn't help herself as she choked out a sob as he left.
Liesel wanted to cry like she had never cried before but she had some business to sort out before she dealt with her loved ones. Attempting to pull herself together, Liesel turned her attention to the two witches and walked towards them as Bonnie had stood back up. The two witches looked exhausted but Liesel didn't care.
"Mrs. Bennett, I can't hit you on principal because you're an old lady and my grandmother would probably spin her grave." Liesel began before turning to Bonnie and slapping her in the face. "But I can hit her in the face however."
"Liesel…" Shelia began.
"What did you do?" Liesel hissed.
"It was nothing personal–"
"–Well I'm making it personal so you've been warned witches and just so we're clear, the Bennett witches are no longer friends with the Heindeck-Caffrey psychics. You may claim to know my grandmother Mrs. Bennett but she would be looking at you in disgust just as I am if she could see what you have just tried to do. We will make you pay for this and trust me, I won't need to see into the future to assure you that you will get your just deserved." Liesel spat in disgust before making her way up the stairs and back up to the ruins of Old Fell's church. There was Stefan and Elena, they were standing over what seemed to be Jeremy Gilbert. Liesel wasn't sure. Stefan looked at her for a moment before making his way over to her and as he did the tears started to come. Liesel just couldn't help herself.
"I-I…" Liesel chocked out as she tried to suppress a sob and when Stefan tried to hug her, Liesel just took a step back. Liesel couldn't do this in front of Stefan, she couldn't break down in front of him. She needed to be alone. She couldn't deal with a hug right now; her head was too all over the place. Liesel wanted answers yet she wanted to scream at the top of her lungs. She was so confused, so conflicted and it was so overwhelming. Her heart was falling apart. Liesel attempted to say something again but nothing happened and so she reached out for Stefan and he came to her and Liesel clutched on to his shirt ever so gently. She needed to tell him what to do, that he needed to check on Damon because he would do something stupid if they weren't careful. Liesel needed Stefan to be there for Damon as right not Liesel couldn't be, she was no use to Damon in the state that she was in. She needed to go home and pull herself together.
"I will go check on him and I won't leave his side, I promise you that." Stefan quietly assured Liesel, he knew her so well that it was like he could read her mind. Stefan pressed a kiss on the top of Liesel's head and all she could do was nod as words were completely failing her. It was like she could feel what Damon was going through and it hurt, Liesel felt like her heart had been shattered into thousands of little pieces. This was what true heartbreak felt like.
Removing her hand from Stefan's shirt, Liesel turned around and began to make her journey home through the woods and into the darkness.
