Wait, hold up now. It can't be, can it?

Oh but it is my dear friend, I have in fact managed to get this chapter out within the one month mark.

Holy rainbow sprinkled ice creams being used for unicorn horns. (I have no idea what that means either but yeah)

I just wanted to say before I start with anything else that since the last chapter I have received some of the most amazing, detailed and heart warming reviews I have ever gotten. Now don't get me wrong, I have had some fantastic and truly beautiful ones before also. I cherish and appreciate each and every single one I have ever received. Even the ones that just say 'thanks' or 'update soon'. The feedback from you all is something I cannot measure in its usefulness both practically and for me in a motivational and encouraging way.

I owe each of you thanks that I will likely never be able to convey, as throughout the years I have been doing this story, you have truly kept me alive in more ways than one.

Reading what you are feeling, wanting, expecting, suspecting and so much more is completely irreplaceable and worth its weight in gold. It helps me in knowing where to go, what to write and I pray create the absolute best chapter's I physically can for you all. So too all of you who offer even the smallest amount of feedback, I read each one and appreciate it as well as take it on board more than I can explain. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart as well as to anyone who just reads this story, I hope you are enjoying it also and I don't let any of you down with what I come up with.

I think that is likely enough of me gushing for one update

So I'll just say I'll see you on the other side!

Chapter 37

"Keeping Time, Facing Fears & Breaking Free"

The early morning alarm, which had been set at a time which should be considered illegal, rings with no forgiveness what so ever. It's piercing and jarring tone brings an abrupt end to the peaceful slumber Shelby had found herself cocooned within. The mother of two teenagers was used to her early morning wake up calls but this one was extra painful. It had only been a few hours previously that the busy choir coach had managed to crawl her body into her overly comfortable bed.

Of course the awakening she was receiving was expected but it didn't make the harshness of the awakening any easy for her sleep deprived mind to deal with. A large sigh escapes Shelby's large capacity lungs as for an extra few moments the brunette desperately attempts to hold on to the bliss of sleep by keeping her green eyes forcibly shut.

'You're just fooling yourself Shelby. You know you have no choice but to get your ass out of bed this second. You're going to be pushing it as it is.' Shelby's overly sensible inner voice rather harshly points out and causes a gut wrenching groan to echo from the teacher's mouth. If ever a grown woman sounded like a teenager with a hangover it was in that very moment.

Realising that her inner voice was indeed correct, Shelby forces herself to a sitting position on her bed. The warmth radiating from the thin covers was tempting to return to but somehow will power wins out and the mother of two actually fully gets out of bed.

With half open eyes the older brunette moves her body through to her en suite bathroom. Today was not the day for being late so the harsh reality of a bitter cold shower would be just the shock to the system Shelby needed.

'Okay shower, get dressed, maybe even put some make up on too because we're travelling. Ugh, I guess we'll see how I feel after this shower.' Shelby mentally instructs herself as she disrobes her nightwear to the floor outside her shower and hesitantly steps inside. The cold tile beneath her feet just a precursor for the ice she was about to willingly dump over herself.

This was in no way a pleasant experience for Shelby but it was indeed necessary. The need for her ice cold shower to wake her up and the ungodly early start were things the older Corcoran woman had learnt from some hard experiences in her past. They say it takes the failures in life to know what to do correctly and in this case it couldn't be more accurate.

The schedule was always tight for competitions but ones where the team would be travelling out of state were even more so. To make this even more of a tightly packed, run like the military set of operations, this competition was as big as it can possibly get. Today was the day that Vocal Adrenaline made their way to New York for Nationals.

Now Shelby had been to National's plenty of times previously and even to New York for them before now but this year this whole trip was even more important and special. Shelby wasn't just going to Nationals this year as the head coach of Vocal Adrenaline and looking to take home gold. Oh no, one of the most revered coaches in the country was this year also going as a mother and in many ways that meant more to Shelby than any award ever could.

For the first time Shelby would be watching from the wings not only as a somewhat judgemental and expectant choir coach but as a nervous and proud mother. Just the thought of the emotions she would experience while watching her baby daughter perform on the Nationals stage was overwhelming. How she would cope when she was actually faced with the moment, the mother didn't know. Despite that though the brunette was determined to make sure her daughter and team in general had the best possible chance of securing that win and being named the best in the nation at what they did.

This of course meant flying out the day before, as early as humanly possible. The reasoning behind the early morning flight was simple, it gave her team and herself the most time to rest from the travel and also prepare at the venue for their performance. Of course the routines were already down to a fine art but nothing quite beat being able to get on that stage before the show and familiarise yourself with the differences and in some ways the nerves which would undoubtedly come.

Getting there the day before was what every team did but getting there as early as possibly on the day before was something Shelby had learnt from past experience. Being able to check everyone in, deal with any crisis that might rear their head once arriving with as much time to spare was truly worth its weight in gold. It was a true saying that anything that could go wrong will go wrong so Shelby had made sure not only were they prepared for anything but they had enough time to deal with whatever may happen as well.

The only downside to this game plan however was a new one for the choir coach of many a year now. She was use to having to deal with the tired and anxious teens once at the airport and had that down to a near science. What she didn't have down to a near science however was the fact this year, Shelby was responsible for not only getting herself up, ready and at the airport in time but also responsible for doing the same for not one but two teenagers, her daughters.

'May god have mercy on my soul.' Shelby silently prays for herself as she steps from her brisk shower and checks the time for what would not be the last time that morning. So far the brunette was on track and she just hoped it would stay that way but wasn't holding her breath.

For Rachel the early morning wake up from her alarm was a welcome one. The diva in training had made sure to give herself an extra forty minutes or so on her older sister, there was a lot of preparation the younger brunette needed to do today and she didn't feel like being rushed.

Ever since it had been revealed that Nationals would be taking place in New York this year Rachel had been bouncing off of the walls with excitement. The smallest brunette had only ever been to New York once previously in her life and that had been almost a decade previously. Rachel had just won her first starring role in one of Madam Saunders' end of year showcases. It had been a huge deal for the five year old to accomplish this and the small starlets fathers' had rewarded Rachel with the trip to New York.

This time though things were different for the youngest of Shelby's two girls. Not only was Rachel going to the big apple this time to perform on one of its many stages but this time Rachel would be going with both her sister and their mother too. Even her grandmother, uncle, cousin and auntie 'Bubi' would be there to watch the performance, it almost couldn't be more perfect.

Unfortunately for the fourteen year old there were some aspects to her life currently that most certainly could be more perfect. The harassment she had been suffering from her first fan had only increased sand was now not limited to emails but showing its self in constant texts and phone calls from numerous unknown numbers. Just like the emails it didn't matter how many times Rachel would block a number another five different ones would just replace it and by now the young brunette was feeling helpless.

'No, you can't allow them to win Rachel. You have worked hard for this opportunity and you owe it to yourself but also your team and of course mom to give it everything you have. Just a few more days and then you can come clean and ask mom or perhaps even Lexi for their assistance.' Was the narrative Rachel had been constantly reiterating within the fourteen year olds mind for easily the last week and a half.

Rachel knew she was no longer equipped to handle this situation alone but Nationals meant far too much for the diva in training, to her team and her mom and their combined hard work and achievements for it to feel like the right time to actually reach out for the much needed help. The youngest of Shelby's two daughters had made a solemn promise to herself though that the second the family returned from New York, hopefully with the winning trophy in hand, she would then swallow her pride and ask for help.

As unnerving and daunting as everything she was suffering from her seemingly obsessed fan was, it didn't compare to the pain she was currently experiencing from the current situation pertaining to herself and Jesse.

The two fourteen year olds hadn't truly held a conversation since the Friday night in Rachel's bedroom. Of course Jesse had attempted on numerous occasions to break the ice but Rachel had shot down each and every attempt the male lead had made. The fact she was also dealing with the harassment was likely not helping Jesse's chance of Rachel hearing him out either but she was also deeply hurt by his assumptions and more so his words.

The awkwardness between the normally joined at the hip pair had not gone unnoticed by either Rachel's mother and sister or the rest of the Vocal Adrenaline team. Rachel could tell Jesse was apprehensive to explain the situation to anyone, likely to guilt and embarrassment due to his behaviour. She herself hadn't ventured up any type of explanation to the fellow members of VA either but her mother was aware of what took place after Rachel disclosed to her, when her mother returned from work that Friday night. It had taken a few days but Rachel soon realised she had to clue Lexi in also and just before the Monday after that Friday night, the youngest Corcoran girl had took her older sibling to the side and explained what happened.

Not oblivious to how both her mother and sister were likely to handle the situation with Jesse, Rachel had made each of the fiery brunettes promise they wouldn't do a thing. Shelby was reluctant to agree but knew deep down she had to allow her daughter to handle this herself and so had rather quickly made her promise. Lexi of course had been a much harder sell, the over protective streak in the sixteen year old a lot less willing to just allow her sister to deal with this alone.

Thankfully for the shorter of the two sisters though, Shelby had reminded Lexi that Rachel had every right to handle what had happened however she wished and all but told her eldest to keep out or else. After the not so veiled threat from their mother the older of the two Corcoran siblings had reluctantly made her promise as well and to date both Shelby and Lexi were keeping to their words.

Having gathered up her things ready for her morning routine, which today would be more rigorous than usual, Rachel opens the door leading to the adjoining bathroom and tries to clear her mind of all her thoughts and worries. Easier said than done.

As the sound of the shower starts to bring the only remaining sleeping brunette round to the early morning hour, Lexi yanks the cover clean over her head. It was a childish action really, a way of trying to block out the inevitable, to remain safely within the comfort of her bed.

Unlike both her mother and sister, Lexi had no motivation what so ever for her sleep to be disrupted. The fact she was being forced to take the earliest flight possible along with Vocal Adrenaline and their coach was something the sixteen year old still found unjust.

'I'm not in the choir and I'm not the coach or even her assistant. Why do I have to drag my ass out of bed before the frigging rooster even crows?' Lexi mentally rants, not for the first time since finding out she wasn't being allowed to fly in the next day with her G-mama, uncle, cousin and auntie 'Bubi'.

The oldest of Shelby's two daughters had voiced her problem with the plan when it had first been mentioned but after an unequivocal 'tough, you're coming with me and your sister.' Lexi's objections had remained firmly within the safety of her mind.

Even asking her G-mama to suggest her mother rethinks her decision did nothing but earn a 'fight your own battles next time kid' talk from the clearly unimpressed choir coach who was also her mother. Lexi didn't want to admit it but now the morning was here, the reality of her situation was starting to sink in for the sixteen year old. Whether she liked it or agreed with it, Lexi was going to be on that flight with Vocal Adrenaline and her mother.

Seeing as a last minute reprieve was about as likely as being able to take a warm shower that morning, Lexi lets out a sigh of dread and pushes the cover back down from over her head. No longer could she hide like a child underneath the blankets and pretend, this was happening one way or another and she may as well face that fact.

Pushing herself up from being face down on her bed, the brunette reaches blindly for her phone which was on the bedside table as always. It was still dark outside for the most part so the bright light off of the phone's screen causes the newly awake sixteen year old to squint and grimace. Lexi was intending in making a call to Santana so they could talk a final time before the long weekend separation this competition was forcing upon them. Unfortunately though as brown eyes adjust to the bright light being beamed in to them, Lexi sees the time and groans loudly in frustration.

'Of course, it is that special time of the morning where no other mentally sane person would be awake. I can't call San now, she would kill me. I guess our goodbyes from last night will have to do until I can call her when we get to the hotel.' The still half asleep brunette realises within the confines of her mind as the sound of Rachel exiting the bathroom wakes Lexi up a little more.

Since the close call at the movies, the two young lovers had been much more careful about where and when they hangout. Neither liked the fact they were having to sneak around but they were trying to make the most of a bad situation.

Santana had originally wanted to come along to New York but as soon as her mother started asking too many questions about why she would be interested in going, the Latina quickly dropped the idea. It was sad really because apart from just wanting to be with Lexi as much as possible, Santana had also wanted to go so she could show her undying and without a doubt loud support for Vocal Adrenaline and especially their smallest member and of course also their coach. The same Coach that she was still somewhat intimidated of but that was besides the point, her support was genuine none the less.

Pulling herself up from her bed and half blindly trudging her way through to the adjoining bathroom Lexi shared with her younger sibling, Lexi attempts to ready herself for the day ahead. The fact she would be travelling didn't bother the sixteen year old, well apart from the early start. Going to New York may not be her life ambition like Rachel but the chance to finally go and see the big apple certainly was a selling point of the whole thing. Having to deal with a stressed out Rachel and Shelby however, not to mention be around Jesse and not smack the cocky son of a bitch in the mouth, they were the rather sore points for the tall teenager.

'Mom said she needs you to help her though and it isn't like you have a choice in this so you may as well just accept it.' Lexi reminds herself as she is surprised to feel the faintest amount of warm water is remaining as she starts her shower. It was a win and the sixteen year old wasn't about to not count those when she had a feeling today at least those would be few and far between.

After her brisk shower, the oldest of the three brunettes decides to double check she has everything packed and ready. The night before had been the deadline for Shelby and her two girls to complete their packing for the trip. It was a tall order but somehow, to Shelby's amazement, the task was achieved.

They would be gone for two nights in total and with two teenagers that meant a lot of things which needed to be packed. Rachel as expected was the one to exceed her limit, how she'd managed that Shelby would rather not know. Thankfully Lexi seemingly was a much more reserved traveller and had enough space to accommodated her younger sister's over flowing 'essentials'.

Standing in the hallway of her home which leads from her bedroom, past the kitchen's side entrance and straight up to the front door, Shelby takes in a deep breath. Somehow now the bags were packed and sitting by the stairs the mother was realising she would likely be facing some charges for exceeding the weight limit. All things considered though, Shelby would let that go because out of all the things that could go wrong today, that was one that would be easily fixed, even if her bank account would take a hit.

'Okay, next up check Amanda is on track and there aren't any last minute calls, questions or people pulling out to deal with.' Shelby instructs herself in a regimental manner as she goes to her phone which was charging on the kitchen counter.

As green eyes gaze upon the now fully charged phone, Shelby shakes her head in disbelief as the first thing she notices is a text from her mother.

'Remember to get 'Tweety' and 'Cookie' to eat something before you leave, you too on that one. Don't even think about lying to me either because you know I'll know just by the tone of your voice or text, yes I'm that good. Now, don't forget to double check you have everything before you leave the house, before you leave your car, before you go through and after you go through security. Oh and keep everything together and somewhere safe, a fanny pack works amazingly. Tell the girls I love them and will see them tomorrow. Call me when you land so I know you're safe or I'll worry and come early, you know I will so call! Right, this has already taken me nearly an hour to type so be safe and I'll see you tomorrow. Love you. Mom x'

As Shelby finishes the text she can't help but half chuckle. It was typical of her mother and although parts of it frustrating for the already worrying choir coach, it also made her smile to know her mother had gone out of her way to wake up so early and send the message to her.

'There is only one Dolly Corcoran that's for sure.' Shelby mentally comments as she grabs her phone and sends her mother a simple thank you reply which also assures the older woman she will call when they arrive safely in New York.

The sound of slow footsteps down the stair case tells the mother of two that her eldest daughter would be the first one down. Both of her girls had distinctive ways of doing things which would be an instant indicator for the mother which of her two girls she was dealing with. The small and sometimes subtle differences between her girls that she had learnt were some of the favourite things for Shelby about being a parent. Just being able to pick up on the smallest of details about each of her girls was a privilege that Shelby would never take for granted after so many years of being deprived of it.

"Do you want some toast now or would you rather wait until we're driving and I pick up my coffee in the drive thru to pick you something up?" Shelby bellows her question towards Lexi who by now was reaching the last step of the stairs. The mother was just checking her messages for any missed ones and sending a quick reply to Amanda to let her know everything was still, so far on track.

Lexi pulls up the rather baggy, lightweight joggers she was wearing. Comfort was something the sixteen year old would not sacrifice when she knew travel would be involved. Her hair was in a messy bun to one side and make up minimal but still there.

'I should of known I wouldn't be able to get through this without being made to eat. The fact I'm even thinking about skipping food is crazy to me but I just can't help thinking I'm going to throw up if I do.' Lexi mentally surmises as she tries to quickly think of a response which would satisfy her mother and get the teenager what she wanted.

"May as well wait. Saves having to do the washing up that way." Lexi answers with a purposely placed explanation for her choice which she knew Shelby would accept.

"Always a method to your madness, I should have seen that one coming or thought of it myself really." The mother jokingly replies as she looks up from her phone and greets Lexi with a tender smile.

Instantly though the mother alarm bells within Shelby's brain start to ring. Lexi looked pale, sure she wasn't quite as tanned as Rachel but she was certainly never nearly white either.

'She even has make up on so if she's still looking like a ghost this must be serious.' Shelby tells herself as her ever present 'Corcoran' eyebrow begins to travel up into place.

Flopping down in to the armchair, Lexi senses her mother's untrusting gaze burning in to the back of her head. Although silently starting to freak out the sixteen year old manages to remain completely cool under pressure outwardly and flicks the TV on as a distraction.

'How does she know something is up? I turned down food sure but I also gave a plausible reason for that. Why do I have to have the mother with psychic abilities?' The inner voice inside the younger brunette's mind head rants with panic before taking a breath to calm back down.

'Okay, no need to freak out. Play this cool Lex, nice and cool. Just don't look at her. If you don't make eye contact you might be able to avoid this.' The voice continues as somehow Lexi manages to react completely unnerved as she flicks through the channels.

Narrowing her emerald eyes on the back o her eldest child's head, Shelby can feel the suspicion that something is wrong growing. Not entirely sure what to make of it just yet though the much more confident mother decides to see how it plays out, for now at least.

"Any sign of your sister stirring?" Shelby asks, a change of subject hopefully a way to lure Lexi into a false sense of security.

'You may have gotten away with this round Lexi.' The relieved sixteen year old mutters within the confines of her mind before laughing somewhat sarcastically at her mother's question.

"You are joking right? Rach was up before the birds, you know how buzzed she is about getting to go to New York. Rachel doesn't sleep in even at the weekend like a normal person so the chances of her doing so today are astronomical." Lexi retorts, her words pointing out the obvious as she turns around enough to look at her mother in a questioning manner.

It was a mistake as something about the look locked behind her mother's green eyes sends a lump to form within the brunette teenager's throat. Never one to show any tells, Lexi swallows the lump and just gives a slightly nervous smirk.

Shelby registers the look her eldest tries so desperately to disguise and just tucks it away in a mental note. Something the older Corcoran knew all too well was showing your hand too early could easily come back to bite you in the ass, so for now she'd remain seemingly oblivious.

Walking from the kitchen and into the living room, the mother of two passes the armchair Lexi is sat in and takes her own seat on the sofa. She herself was in something comfortable for travelling, a pair of light washed jeans and simple vest. Planes were always stuffy so keeping it simple was always the best way to go.

"To be honest I'm surprised she isn't already down and packing everything ready into the car begging me to get on the road." Shelby agrees with a chuckle which seems to serve its purpose in relaxing Lexi somewhat.

"I'm surprised she isn't freaking out about how we are going to miss our flight and miss Nationals." Lexi counters with her own laugh which was music to the worried mother's ears.

With Rachel, for the most part, Shelby knew the youngest of her two daughters held her heart on her sleeve. The fourteen year olds emotions were normally hard to ignore if anything, you never had a chance of missing them or misreading them. Lexi however was the one who was far too skilled at hiding and acting her way out of showing how she truly felt. It was getting better but there would likely always be a part of Shelby that would wonder if her eldest was keeping something hidden and dealing with it alone.

"She really is over the moon about this isn't she? Going to New York, performing at Nationals the whole thing?" Shelby asks knowingly but was using the subject of how Rachel was feeling as a way of getting Lexi to open up slightly.

Watching Lexi as the sixteen year old continues to be unimpressed by what she is finding on the TV at this time of morning, Shelby can't help but break out into a proud smile. Looking at either of her girls would cause that reaction and it was something the mother knew would never stop no matter how old either of them got. The pride and pure elation she felt for each of her daughters was unparallel and made up such a huge part of who the older brunette was as a person.

Lexi nods in agreement before settling on a random channel, not really interested in watching anything just having it on for a distraction if needed. Her brown orbs flicker across to her mother, who was still smiling and she finds herself smirking back. It was a silent question asking Shelby why she was grinning at her but one the mother chooses to completely ignore by unwavering in her grin.

"No Rachel is as excited as I've ever seen her about anything. New York is her dream, has been forever. I think it's extra special for her this time though." The sixteen year old admits with a slight shrug to her shoulders.

Shelby nods intrigued and leans slightly more towards Lexi who is sat in the armchair to the right of the sofa. She was encouraging Lexi to elaborate on what she means and of course earns a teenager roll of the eyes in response but its good natured so the older brunette lets it go.

"Because this time she's not going to see a show as a reward, she's getting to perform on a New York stage. To Rachel this is a milestone she should have reached by age five so the fact it's finally happening is, well everything to her." Lexi answers honestly as she looks deeply into Shelby's green eyes and gives a faint smile.

Shelby nods her head in understanding as to what Lexi means. The older of the two brunette's is about to answer when she catches the glimmer within Lexi's brown eyes and realises her eldest still has more to say so just half raises her eyebrow in anticipation.

"Then there is the fact that she's getting to go with you this time. Your approval in all this means a lot to her, more than she probably even realises. You're her choir coach but your also her mom and you're going to be there with your family watching her perform. That's huge for Rach and I know she is putting a lot of pressure on herself about it but it's also making it that much more special for her too." Lexi reveals in a way which spoke volumes about the fact a large part of the sixteen year old was wise beyond her years.

'Way to sucker me with that one Lexi. Why not just pour god damn onions in my eyes? You'd get less tears that way.' Shelby rants inwardly as she can feel the familiar stinging sensation building behind both of her eyes.

Sensing she may have just told her mother something that before now hadn't entered Shelby's thought process Lexi feels her chest tighten. Leaning across the arm of the armchair she is sat in the tall teenager reaches out and gently grips her mother's hand.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to upset you or anything." Lexi apologises sincerely, her heart thudding in her chest at the thought of having upset her mother.

Shaking her head Shelby wipes carefully with her free hand under both of her eyes, just encase any tears did escape. The mother of the two brunette's smiles sweetly at the worried sixteen year old and just grips her hand in return.

"You don't have to be sorry baby, you didn't upset me. It's actually touching to know that is how Rachel feels, I guess I never looked at it like that before. Stupid of me I know but it didn't enter my head." Shelby admits with a laugh as Lexi just gently shakes her head in response to.

"You're good and everything but you're not a mind reader mom. I only know that's how Rach is thinking because it's what I would be thinking if it was me. Well that and I am a mind reader when it comes to Rachel." Lexi admits without even really giving her statement that much thought.

'She doesn't even realise what she just said.' Shelby makes a mental note of Lexi's obliviousness before feeling the tears again threaten to fall from her eyes. If it wasn't for the fact she had bothered to put make up on already there was no doubt in the mother's mind she would be currently blubbering like a newborn.

Lexi feels her smile fall on her face as she is faced with her mother suddenly starring at her in a clearly emotional manner. The eldest of Shelby's two daughters frowns deeply in confusion by the sudden shift in tine as she thought she had just said something sarcastic which would have at least earned an eyebrow raise from her mother, not a new flood of tears.

"Mom, are you..." Lexi starts to ask if her mother is okay before something inside her mind clicks as she realise what she said. The already, slightly pale complexion belonging to the sixteen year old whitens a few tints even lighter as the realisation fully sinks in.

'There it is.' Shelby mentally commentates as she watches her daughter register what had been said. Gripping Lexi's hand tightly in response the older brunette smiles sympathetically and rubs her thumb tenderly across the back of Lexi's now slightly clammy hand.

"Lex, you don't have to be embarrassed okay? I'm just glad that's how you feel too. Just know though whether on a stage or just in the audience or anything else you do, I am just as proud of you as I am of Rachel and just as much your mother." Shelby kindly reminds her stubborn eldest child and offers a warm smile too.

Nodding her head in understanding and gratitude Lexi its back in the armchair fully when Rachel can be heard finally descending the staircase. For someone so small in frame and light in weight boy did the fourteen year old know how to make a racket.

Sitting herself up straighter on the sofa, Shelby wipes at her eyes for a final time before turning to watch Rachel make her entrance. As expected any chance of the youngest brunette making a change in her usual attire was completely fruitless.

Rachel was dressed in her trademark pleated skirt, long sleeved, all be it thin and skin tight jumper. The fact the weather was much nicer meant the need for tights were gone but the high knee socks were their replacement so there wasn't a huge amount of overall difference.

"Okay so I have a few last minutes essentials I need to put somewhere. Lexi do you still have some room in your bag?" The clearly hyper fourteen year old questions while already unzipping her sister's bag which was sat with the others by the stairs.

Almost disbelieving there was anything else that Rachel could possibly want to take Shelby goes to speak but is interrupted by Lexi huffing in clear annoyance.

"Yeah sure thing Rach, you just go ahead. It's not like you haven't already filled a good two thirds of my bag with your crap. Why not just take my stuff out and replace it with yours? I don't need clothes or anything, I'll just walk around naked." Lexi sarcastically states, her voice sharp with annoyance but it was earned annoyance at that.

Rachel, seemingly shocked by her sister's outburst, stands dumbfounded and for once unable to make a sound in reply. Her face contorts in to a frown of both confusion and annoyance from her sister's rather bitter words.

Realising she needed to step in before she was dealing with a full on war, Shelby raises up from the sofa and quickly gets her body in between both of the teenagers. Lexi had made no attempt to get up from the armchair but the mother wasn't going to take any chances knowing the temper her eldest had. There was an argument to be had that it was a temper which had been inherited from Shelby herself but it helped the older brunette's conscience to put it down to the eldest Corcoran woman's genes instead.

"Okay, I think that is enough interaction between you two for now. Rachel, whatever it is you need to take just put it in my bag and leave your sister's alone." Shelby instructs her youngest in an attempt to diffuse the bomb she could feel ticking down around her.

For once thinking twice about opening her mouth, Rachel just nods in agreement and side eyes her sister who should could feel watching from her place in the armchair.

'Even with mom in between us I really wouldn't like to stake a bet on the fact Lexi wouldn't be able to get to me if she was truly motivated to.' Rachel mentally notes as she somewhat sheepishly places her things in to her mother's bag before making her way into the kitchen.

Making sure to keep her brown eyes on Rachel all the way into the kitchen Lexi smiles somewhat smugly to herself. The sixteen year old knew she had probably overreacted but sometimes Rachel would over step the mark and Lexi couldn't help herself. The older sister of the two was finally feeling comfortable with being able to react less like Rachel's mother and more just like her sister.

'Doesn't hurt Rach every now and then to be reminded not everything is about her. Feels good that I told her instead of swallowing it down because I was too worried about something else. Maybe I am adjusting after all.' Lexi mentally surmises as the smirk across her lips starts to grow a little deeper.

Catching a warning glare from her mother though, Lexi lingering smirk quickly disappears and brown orbs instantly snap back to the TV. The only downside to no longer having to react like Rachel's mother was the fact Lexi now had a mother of her own she had to answer to, an intimidating one at that.

Letting out a sigh of relief at one disaster being averted, Shelby just tugs her long brown locks back from her face and checks the time to be sure they were indeed still on track. So far the schedule was being kept, how long that would continue for the choir coach could only pray.

It isn't another ten minutes before Shelby has everything packed in to her car, daughter's included. The tension from Lexi's outburst having been squashed when a clearly guilty Rachel offered her older sister a piece of her morning banana. The drive would be about an hour long so the fact she wouldn't be dealing with two aggravated at one another teenagers was a relief to say the least.

The fact it was still so early meant next to nowhere was open, thankfully for the caffeine deprived adult though, her favourite coffee shop was not one of these places. Pulling in to the drive thru Shelby checks the time and is pleased to see her tight schedule was still being kept to.

"Okay girls, what do you two want? Bagels, doughnuts?" Shelby questions her daughters, her own order having been set in stone for the past seven years so was not something which needed to be pondered.

Lexi, sat in the back seat, turned to the side so her long legs could stretch out in the SUV, pulls one ear of her headphones to the side realising they had stopped. The sixteen year old was fighting heavy eyelids ever since the car started moving and with her music to block out any noises the fact she wasn't currently in the land of dreams was somewhat a miracle.

"Oh uh, I guess I'll just have a uh, doughnut?" Lexi answers, her words sounding a hell of a lot more like a question than what she actually wanted to eat.

'Okay, something is definitely going on if Lexi is asking me if she wants a doughnut or not. What is going on with her?' Shelby's concerned motherly voice starts up within the confines of the older brunette's mind as she raises her eyebrow towards Lexi through the reflection in the rear view mirror that her eldest was skilfully avoiding.

Realising her mother was for the second time that morning on to her Lexi quickly jumps in to damage control. Sitting up properly in the back seat she pulls her headphones down around her neck completely and leans forward slightly. With a smile across her face Lexi rests her cheek against the back of her mother's headrest and flutters her eyelashes in a deliberately and over dramatic fashion to show off her puppy dog eyes.

"Or maybe I could have a bagel and doughnut? You know split the difference seeing as I can't make up my mind?" The brunette teenager suggests, her words appearing genuine but Lexi's skill of deception something her mother was all too aware of.

'Let this work please god, let this work.' Lexi's inner voice chants, her stomach churning loudly right on cue. It is a loud grumble which seems to help her cause though and convinces a suspicious Shelby her eldest child was just trying her luck.

"You'll have a doughnut and be happy with it miss." The mother informs her daughter with a roll of her eyes before pecking at her child's cheek as it was still resting against the side of her headrest.

In typical teenage fashion Lexi flops back from the kiss and much like a child, wipes quickly at the mark with her hand. Pulling a mock disgruntled face, Lexi just lets out a sigh of relief that she had seemingly gotten away with that one. The teenager knew she should just be honest and explain what was going on with her but admitting her vulnerability like that just wasn't in Lexi's DNA.

"Rach, what do you want baby?" Shelby asks softly as she turns her head back to facing the intercom that was awaiting their order. Her hand blindly reaches beside her to pat her youngest daughter's thigh and gather her attention, unlike Lexi, Rachel was headphone free but seemingly was still in her own world.

Rachel's attention was focused on the screen of her phone as she is bombarded, even at this early time in the morning, with a new round of messages. No calls had been attempted as of yet but the fourteen year old knew it wouldn't be long and the thought alone was enough to make her stomach knot.

'Why won't you answer me? Is it because of your sister, Lexi? I know how she overshadows you and everything you do. It must be so tough having an older sister like her, so confident yet damaged. Please Rachel, talk to me like you used to. Have I done something wrong or that has upset you? We can talk this out, please. Your No 1 fan xx' Was just one of the numerous and increasingly personal messages that Rachel was being faced with.

The remarks about Lexi unsettled Rachel deeply, her and the 'fan' had spoken very briefly about Lexi and yet somehow he seemed to know intimate details and was constantly alluding to them in some form. Either Lexi was her mother's favourites because of her 'issues' or just a bad, toxic influence Rachel didn't need in her life if she wanted to succeed.

The truth was this 'fan' was out of control and somehow knew details about Rachel's life that they had no right to know. It terrified the young diva in training to the point, in her teenage way the only way to combat it in her mind was to just ignore it. Thoughts of ignorant and foolish hopes that if she ignored it long enough, this 'fan' would eventually grow tired and disappear. Rachel wished for that every single night and yet when every morning came here she was faced with the growing harassment.

'Perhaps I should turn it off all together. I am going to be with mom and Lexi so I don't see any need to actually have it on. It's probably the only way I am going to be able to escape my fan and more importantly enjoy this experience of going to and performing in New York.' Rachel instructs herself silently as her thumb flirts with pressing down the button ready to switch off her device.

The pat from her mother's hand jolts Rachel from her dread though and sends the teens phone down to the depths of the car's floor. With a sharp intake of breath the diva in training snaps her head up with doe like eyes directed at her now confused mother.

"Sorry baby, I didn't mean to scare you. Everything okay? Jesse isn't bothering you is he?" Shelby questions, her motherly protective streak being pricked by the wide eyed look and jump from her youngest child.

Reaching for Rachel's smaller hand the now concerned mother leans across the console and gently squeezes to try and encourage her daughter to open up to her.

Of course this question brings Lexi's protective nature to the forefront and Rachel can all but feel the anger building behind her from her sister's body.

'I may have promised not to do anything but if that little sex pest has been bothering her I swear his ass won't even make it on the plane let alone to New York.' Lexi mentally proclaims as she watches her younger sister closely. No matter what would ever happen between the sisters or in each of their lives, if Rachel ever needed her, Lexi would be there and defend her with everything she had.

Although still hurt and confused by everything that had taken place with Jesse, Rachel wouldn't wish him to blamed for something he hadn't even done. Especially when the repercussions of being blamed would most likely be having to deal with both her sister and mother, in all honesty Rachel wasn't entirely sure which would be worse.

"No, no nothing like that. I was just lost in an article Barbra did recently that's all." Rachel lies with a gentle shake of her head and gentle smile tugging at her plump lips. The fact the lie had come so naturally to her and smoothly was just as shocking to the youngest brunette as it was believable to both her mother and sister who actually seem to buy the tall tale.

'Perhaps all these years of watching Lexi so expertly react under pressure has finally rubbed off on me.' Rachel surmises with relief in the confines of her own mind as her heart rate slowly starts to decrease once again.

"Okay so what do you want to eat honey? Don't try your sister's trick of asking for two things either because you can't make up your mind." Shelby asks again with a half chuckle, her need for her caffeine fix helping her daughter in her deception as it leaves the older woman slightly distracted.

"A bagel will be fine thanks mom. Perhaps I could get a Smoothie though? I don't want to risk getting a dry mouth, especially with flying so soon." Rachel asks in the same cheeky manner her older sibling had previously displayed.

Laughing at her youngest daughter's rather stretched reasoning for getting a Smoothie as well, Shelby just shakes her head in defeat and gives in to both requests from her daughters as she finally gives her order to the long waiting coffee place staff.

"I am only giving in because it's too early, I need my coffee and your requests weren't overly extravagant. Don't either of you extortionists get any ideas." Shelby proclaims with a chuckle as both Rachel and Lexi gleefully grin at the realisation their mother had changed her mind.

With her phone now in the depths of the darkness underneath her car seat, a calmness overcomes the young singer, something which had been lost for a while now. Although still aware the matter would have to be dealt with at some point, at least for now and the rest of this trip it could be forgotten about.

By the time the brunette trio make it in to the airport any room remaining in the tight schedule was all but gone. After Rachel needing an emergency bathroom break they were lucky not to actually be late so just on time by the skin of their teeth was something Shelby would happily accept and call it a win.

As the rest of the Vocal Adrenaline team and Amanda appear Shelby feels herself take a slight breath of relief. Part one of this excursion was complete with no casualties and all the seasoned choir coach could do was pray the rest of this trip would follow suit.

Standing in the line ready to check their respective bags, Jesse instantly seeks out the shortest brunette of the team. He had tried to make communication ever since the night in Rachel's room but if he was honest hadn't pushed too hard due to fear of what Shelby and Lexi may do to him.

Jesse knew he had been a complete asshole with how he handled the situation and his attitude in general. The male lead of Vocal Adrenaline had a hell of an ego and he had allowed that to get the better of him and potentially ruin the only real thing he had in his life. Day and night his regret ate away at him but knowing how he could make things right again was still very much alluding him.

Spotting Rachel huddled between two of the female members of VA, talking with animated hands, no doubt about her excitement to go to New York, Jesse feels a bitter sweet smile spread across his face. The diva in training wasn't necessarily always easy to deal with or even fully understand but Jesse did, he got the fellow fourteen year old in a way he never got anyone. Jesse knew this was a mutual thing and realising he had put that in jeopardy truly made his heart sink into the ground.

Deciding to try his luck the normally self assured and suave fourteen year old tugs back his brown locks and twitches to take a step towards his girlfriend. At least he still thought of her as that, the truth was any real labels on what the pair were or weren't wasn't exactly clear at the moment.

Before his foot can even fully lift off of the ground however Jesse notices a shadow hovering behind him and instantly freezes. Jesse was never normally one to be spooked but without turning around he knew who was now lurking behind him like a sinister shadow. Tensing every muscle in his body to stop from physically shaking the male lead of VA gulps down the sudden lump within his throat and attempts to speak.

"I wouldn't speak Jesse, we both know you have done enough of that." The intimidating voice slices through the air and sends a clear jolt through Jesse's spine.

Smirking at the reaction she was having on the normally self assured teenager, Lexi can't help but feel a certain sense of pride rush through her. Lexi was taller than Jesse and the element of surprise had done its job well so the sixteen year old was pleased with herself.

'Little son of a bitch really thought I would just let him waltz his way over to my sister and upset her again? Idiot!' Lexi's inner voice comments in slight frustration and in a way even thankful for Jesse's ignorance as it finally gave her a reason to step in and say her piece.

"I thought you might be smarter than this waffle boy. I mean come on, you don't even wait till we're at the hotel and Rachel is on her own? No, your arrogant ass really thought you could just stroll on up to her now and what plead for forgiveness?" Lexi mocks Jesse with no sense of regret for her words either. As far as she was concerned he had deeply upset her baby sister and for that any chance of tact was a long time gone.

Jesse can feel Lexi leaning in closer to his ear and does his best to remain outwardly collected. The fourteen year old had practice with hiding his true emotions from his home life so it came more naturally than it probably would to anyone else his age.

"I just want to talk to her, to apologise." Jesse interjects knowing full well he would be given no chance to explain himself so he would have to just make one for himself.

"Apologise? Jesse, the only reason you still have your tiny little balls still attached to yourself right now is because Rachel made me promise not to do anything. You tried to pressure and guilt my fourteen year old sister in to having sex and then gave her shit about it because she was unsure and unready. You think you can just go up, flash that award winning smile and it will all be okay?" Lexi retorts, her temper starting to show in the way her voice was becoming progressively louder.

'Chill Lexi, just calm down. You can't do a thing, you shouldn't even be talking to him. Rachel is finally smiling and laughing and excited about this trip, do not ruin it.' The more sensible side of Lexi's conscience remarks within the confines of her mind as thankfully the airport noise keeps this conversation from being exposed.

As Jesse's suddenly rather dry mouth goes to answer Lexi reaches out with a quick and strong hand. Gripping the fourteen year old singer's shoulder, the protective older sister leans in closer and silences Jesse before a word can leave his lips.

"Don't answer that Jesse, in fact don't say a thing at all. Period. You are here because you are VA's male lead and that's fantastic for you but I am warning you here and now waffle boy, you do one thing to upset Rachel on this trip and my promise to her will be broken. Don't make me break a promise Jesse, just don't." The more whispered tone to Lexi's voice leaves Jesse unable to move at all.

Realising any response other than a nod from his head would just anger the volatile sixteen year old further, Jesse does exactly that and nods his head in reluctant agreement. Receiving a hard shove in the shoulder for his compliance the young singer has to take a second to regain his balance,

"Check your stuff in Jesse and stay away from Rachel." Lexi orders Jesse a final time before slipping back in to the line of VA members waiting to check their bags at the desk.

'God I wish San was here or I could at least talk to her. Then again if she was here Jesse would be checking his bag alright but likely with himself stuffed inside it so maybe it's not a bad thing.' Lexi surmises silently as she weaves her way through the teenagers to reach her younger sister's side. The tall brunette knew all too well just because Jesse had agreed didn't mean he would actually follow through. So in order to make sure the cocky teen kept his word the protective big sister would be keeping a close eye on him and more importantly her baby sister.

Now without her phone Rachel finally felt free, like a massive anchor had been lifted from around her neck. Finally the fourteen year old could just focus on this awesome trip and the fact she was going to be performing at Nationals.

'Oh gold stars, this is actually happening. I am boarding a flight bound for New York where I am going to perform. I suppose in a way this is my debut as a star or at least the foundations for that anyway.' Rachel mentally assess as she feels a light arm wrap around her neck and pull her in close to their body.

"Lexi, is the strangulation really necessary?" Rachel chokes out in protest as she wiggles her head free from her older siblings hold. It was hardly difficult but in true diva in training fashion Rachel made a meal out of it.

Standing up straighter again the younger sister pats down her skirt and quickly fixes her long hair which may have been disturbed by Lexi's greeting. The girl's eyebrows knit together in somewhat exaggerated annoyance as brown orbs shoot her sister a warning glare.

"Okay, calm down. I just wanted to make sure you were had everything, I mean most of it is in my bag but still." Lexi jokes with a playful wink as Rachel rolls her eyes before giving a slight chuckle despite herself.

Holding her hands up in defence Lexi takes a step back and looks towards Gemma, the fellow Vocal Adrenaline member Rachel had been chatting with in line. She was the female lead of the choir group and despite Rachel always gunning for her spot the two seemed to get on well.

"Funny Lexi, funny. Me and Gemma actually were just discussing our excitement about getting to perform in New York. It still feels like a dream." Rachel enthuses as a just as excited Gemma nods with enthusiasm clearly in agreement.

"It is a dream, a dream come true. It's a shame you never followed through with your audition Lexi, you could have been performing with us." Gemma comments kindly, her words instantly earning a head snap from Rachel in her direction.

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves Gemma. We are talking about 'Nationals' level, not karaoke on a Saturday night out with the girls." Rachel bitterly retorts without so much as a second thought. The words came instantly and slice through the otherwise nice atmosphere like a knife.

'Why would she say something like that? Lexi does not need to be in Vocal Adrenaline, no thank you. Lexi has plenty of activities she succeeds at, this is mine and mine alone.' Rachel's insecure inner voice comments in follow up t her vocal outburst as her chocolate brown eyes darken somewhat towards her fellow VA member.

Taking a knowing breath, Lexi just smiles delicately towards Gemma before shaking her head in part annoyance at her sister and part attempt to calm her down.

"Rachel, put the claws back okay? I didn't audition and I didn't join, I won't be on that stage this weekend so you can let your eyes turn back from green." Lexi comments somewhat pointedly before shaking her head once again. The sixteen year old loved her sister with all of her heart but it was moments like this that the diva in training really pushed the limits of how far that love would stretch.

'Dear Barbra, you've done it again Rachel. Allowed your insecurities to turn in to the green eyed monster and once again hurt your sister's feelings. What is wrong with you?'Rachel mentally berates herself as she recognises the hurt flash across Lexi's beautiful features. Even as skilled as the older sister was at hiding her feelings, the look of pain was distinct and instantly slapped the fourteen year old back to reality.

Looking somewhat apologetically towards Gemma, who undoubtedly was now feeling uncomfortable, Rachel steps closer to her older sibling and reaches for her hand. Lexi however recoils at the interaction and just turns to a now backing up Gemma.

"Let's go and get you checked in, I saw someone waving you over." Lexi lies as she guides a thankful and guilty feeling Gemma over towards the front of the shortening line of Vocal Adrenaline members.

Sighing with regret and anger towards herself for her actions and hurtful words, Rachel catches the eye of another member of VA and indicates for them to watch her bags for her. Before the unsuspecting team mate can accept or decline, Rachel disappears through the airport and into the bathroom.

Shelby catches Lexi weave through the thankfully much shorter queue and beckons her eldest towards her with a simple wave of her hand. The oldest brunette was keeping a detailed tally of everyone being checked in and their luggage before sending them to stand and wait with Amanda, who was waiting off to the side of the check in.

"Lexi, you okay?" Shelby questions short and sweet, she could tell her daughter was avoiding checking in herself and along with behaviour earlier in the morning was growing increasingly suspicious.

Lexi attempts to play it cool, her bag was swinging off of her shoulder and one hand was in the pocket of her low riding joggers. A weak attempt at a smile splashes across her features and draws the dreaded 'Corcoran' eyebrow every closer to showing its self.

'Even when she is responsible for a shit load of kids in a busy airport, all travelling to an important competition, somehow she still manages to have some kind of radar. God help me.' Lexi mentally groans as her chocolate orbs avoid the green counterparts now studying her every move.

Looking to the clipboard her right arm is wrapped around, Shelby waits silently for her daughter's answer. The choir coach knew with Lexi that any eye contact wasn't going to happen so instead she makes out as though her attentions are elsewhere. It was a good trick to lure the teenager into a false sense of security and hopefully, one way or another get the brunette to admit what was wrong.

"I'm cool. I was just checking everyone was in line and not you know straggling behind. You did bring me with you to help after all." Lexi attempts to somewhat joke her way out of the situation but instantly regrets her decision.

'Why not just wave a red flag in front of a bull Lexi, it would be less life threatening?' The anxious teenagers mind rants inwardly as she watches her mother's head slowly rise up from looking over the clipboard.

"Lexi, I have so much to do today please don't make me drag whatever is wrong out of you. A, I don't have the time or energy and B, whatever is wrong I'm your mom, I'm here for you." Shelby insists expertly, the words causing the right amount of guilt and need from her child.

Her mother's words cause Lexi's resistance to crumble away like a sandcastle being attacked by the waves. Her eyes glaze with the threat of tears which only causes the teenager to retreat further into herself and keep how she was feeling hidden.

'Come on Lexi, that's it cry. Show your mother once again how truly weak you are. God has she even seen you go a day without tears falling from your eyes?! What is wrong with you? Be more like your mother and G-Mama, be strong. You're letting them down being like this, your mom doesn't need this extra stress. Pull it together!' Lexi's inner voice harshly taunts the brunette within the confines of her mind as the walls of self protection come back up like shields.

"Mom, I'm fine okay? I didn't even want to come on this stupid trip but I'm here so can you just leave me alone?" Lexi snaps as a form of protection from the fears currently invading her heart.

Shelby is stunned for a moment, completely caught off guard by her child's reaction. If it had been Rachel the mother probably would have been more ready or even expecting it.

'What the hell just happened? Did she just answer me back and with attitude?' Shelby's unbelieving inner thoughts conclude silently as the choir coach attempts to recover from the unexpected outburst.

Before the now slightly pissed older woman can react though, Lexi has taken the slight hesitation and shock to her advantage and fled the scene knowing full well her mother was unable to currently follow her.

Standing in the constantly busy airport bathroom, Rachel looks up at the mirror in front of her and just sighs heavily. The pressure of the harassment she was suffering from her 'fan' had taken its toll and now it was clear to the fourteen year old knocked her insecurities back into full force.

'I can't believe I said that and treated my sister that way. No wonder she walked away from me, I should be grateful she didn't slap the taste from my mouth. Oh dear Barbra what is wrong with me? I should be the most thrilled I have ever been in my life. I am going to New York and performing at Nationals for 'Gold Stars' sake and yet I feel like this.' Rachel's over working and now worrying mind desperately attempts to make sense of things within the confines of her mind.

Running the cold water for a few seconds Rachel reaches down and wets her fingertips before slowly patting both of her now flushed cheeks. The fourteen year old was entirely sure if she was hoping to wake herself up or just cool the warmth radiating from her skin from stress.

'This is your chance to perform in New York Rachel, at Nationals and most importantly in front of your family. On top of that you are performing under the tutelage of your own mother. You need to pull yourself together, remember who you are and focus. Your whole life has been leading up to this and you owe it to yourself, to Lexi, to your mother and anyone else who has ever helped you to own this moment.' A suddenly sobering and focused side to the young girl's brain speaks up and allows Rachel to calm herself back down.

Starring directly at the reflection of herself, the diva in training subtly nods along to the instructions coming from her own inner voice. Her phone was lost underneath the front seat in her mother's car, so for now at least, the 'fan' situation was dealt with.

'Once Nationals are done, once you are back home and everything is settled then you can deal with your 'fan' Rachel. Right now, you need to be one hundred percent focused on Nationals and making your family, especially your mother and sister proud of you.' Rachel informs herself sternly, her posture straightening its self in the reflection the more the self motivating speech continues.

As brown eyes scan herself over for a final time, almost searching their own reflection for an ounce of doubt, Rachel nods one last time before taking a deep breath and exiting the bathroom.

Rachel's small frame weaves through the rushing crowds over to the now last few member of VA waiting to be checked in. Giving a bright smile of thanks towards the team mate she had dumped her bags with before she ran off, Rachel spots Jesse watching her from the side.

The male lead of Vocal Adrenaline was stood with the majority of the team, who were all checked in, with Amanda. His eyes were full of sadness and as much as seeing him tugs on the fourteen year olds heartstrings, as the faintest of smiles tugs at his lips Rachel shakes her head subtly.

'Gold Stars, why does he have to look at me like that? He is the one who said those awful things and yet why do I feel like I am somehow in the wrong? Perhaps because I have yet to hear him out?' Rachel mentally weighs up the options within the privacy of her own thoughts before averting her eyes from Jesse's all together.

"Rachel?" A voice breaks the teenager from her thoughts and quickly Rachel recognisees it as her mother's and straightens herself instantly.

Shelby was smiling warmly towards her youngest daughter but it was obvious this hadn't been the first time calling her name in an attempt to gather the fourteen year olds attention. With a pen hanging from her two fingers, the older brunette's left hand waves Rachel over to the desk so she could be checked in.

Blinking away her distracting thoughts, the younger of Shelby's two daughters quickly gathers her heavy luggage and makes her way over to her mother. Shelby frowns a little seeing Rachel was still in a world of her own.

'Okay, something is going on with both of my girls. Like this day wasn't hard enough to keep on track to begin with.' Shelby rants within her own thoughts as the worry for both of her children collides with concerns of the strict time restraint she was under and responsible for keeping.

Wrapping her left arm around Rachel's small frame, Shelby pulls her into her side securely and has to nudge the shorter brunette slightly in order for their eyes to connect.

"Rach, you okay?" The mother questions with concern, much like she had previously with Lexi.

Half expecting the same reaction, Shelby was ready this time and makes sure her grip around her daughter was comforting but not weak by any means.

Looking up in to the green eyes of her mother which she had admired long before even meeting her mother, Rachel nods her head with enthusiasm.

"Of course, I'm going to New York and performing at Nationals. I'm fantastic, truly. Are you? Is everyone checked in?" The fourteen year old asks smoothly, her sister's affect on her showing or perhaps it was just the fact Rachel had finally made the choice to shut off all thoughts and worries about her 'fan' until this trip was over.

Smiling brightly at the response from her youngest, Shelby beams with a bright grin of relief and excitement to see Rachel so enthused. Much like Lexi, Shelby had expected the diva in training to have been far more impatient and excited about this trip in the lead up but it seemed to be showing its self now.

"Good baby, good, not long now." Shelby assures softly, her hand rubbing up and down Rachel's arm a few times before turning her attention back to getting her daughter and the final few member checked in for the flight which was not far away from taking off now.

'Yes, once I'm in New York I can just train my mind in completely on Nationals and the performance. It's an escape I know but it is one I desperately need right now. I have worked hard for this, the entire team has, my mother included. I cannot let them or myself down.' Rachel internal dialogue concludes silently as she decides to stay by her mother's side. The comfort just being close to the strong and together older brunette was something currently a rather lost fourteen year old was desperately seeking.

Looking down the clipboard a final time to check everyone had indeed been checked in, Shelby slots her pen to one side and notices Rachel keeping a close distance between them. It warms the mother's heart the fact her child seemed to take comfort and joy from being near to her. Rachel was easily the most outwardly affectionate of her two daughters, at least on a physical level. It had been something which had shown from day one and something Shelby truly prayed never changed.

Of course at school and in school functions the older Corcoran woman had a responsibility to be professional and the team's coach, including Rachel but she was also the girls' mother and would never turn her child away when she wanted to be near her, for any reason.

"Okay, so that is everyone checked in, you ready for the next part?" Shelby asks Rachel with a wink as she slides her larger hand into Rachel's and gives it a tender squeeze.

Rachel beams a bright smile, thankful for the needed contact and leans in to her mother's arm for a moment before nodding in agreement to the asked question.

"If it's one step closer to New York and Nationals then you can bet I am." Rachel chirps as sincerely as she can muster, her grip on her mother's hand not letting up as the older brunette leads them both over to Amanda and the rest of Vocal Adrenaline ready to tackle the next stage of the trip.

Rachel knew she was playing a risky game by constantly reassuring herself that she would be able to forget about her problems with her 'fan' throughout this trip. Sadly though it was the only way the fourteen year old saw herself able to get through this trip at all without having a mental breakdown and that just couldn't happen. This trip was Rachel's first real chance to shine in front of her new found family, especially her mother and nothing was going to ruin that, not a chance in hell.

By the skin of her teeth and thanks to her mother being preoccupied by the Vocal Adrenaline team members, Lexi manages to avoid the rightly annoyed choir coach until it is announced that they are boarding the aircraft.

The almost robotic voice which echoes over the loud speakers around the gate area sends the sixteen year olds heart into palpitations. With wide and nervous brown orbs the oldest of Shelby's two children starts to frantically search for any sign of her mother.

The normally ready for anything teen was shaking and not just from the fear of the repercussions she would be facing for having mouthed off to her mother earlier. With the rest of the planes passengers filing onto the aircraft, any attempt at breathing suddenly became laboured for the tall teen. Lexi wasn't sure which was causing her impending heart attack but without a doubt the prospect of facing her mother after snapping was a major contribution.

'Maybe having that fit earlier wasn't your smartest idea. Now you are going to be trapped into a confined space with a no doubt pissed off version of your mom in close proximity. Why do you do this to yourself?' Lexi's rational and clear thinking inner voice questions its owner as the tall brunette attempts to sneak her way into the crowd of other teenagers to make it onto the plane without being seen.

The nervous sweat was already built up on the young girl's brow and the sick feeling was quickly rising from her stomach into her chest and soon it would be lodged deep within her throat. Lexi's legs, normally toned and strong felt as though they were made from pipe cleaners as with each step she takes they seem to bend in the wrong direction.

'You just have to make it on to the plane without mom seeing you. She's probably busy dealing with everyone else, just keep your head down and you'll be fine.' Lexi instructs herself with about as much confidence as she currently possessed that she wouldn't throw up the doughnut she'd eaten on the drive to the airport.

Of course in a manner only probably her g-mama could pull off better, waiting at the entrance to the plane with both arms crossed over her chest was a un amused looking choir coach. Able to see the unwavering stare Shelby was beaming into her eldest daughter, the rest of the VA members quickly squeeze past and out of the way. There wasn't a single teenager in the bunch who under any circumstances wanted to be in Lexi's shoes.

"Cowards." Lexi mutters under her breath as she is left the only remaining member of this trip apart from Shelby to enter the plane. She was alone and by the look behind her mother's green orbs that was not a good thing.

"Did you really think you would be able to sneak on without me running into you?" Shelby asks in a mix of disbelief and smugness which causes her daughter's stomach to flip.

"A girl can dream." Lexi retorts in a joking manner because right now that was really all she could do, she was screwed and was without a doubt aware of it.

Reaching out firmly but gently, Shelby wraps her left hand around the top of Lexi's upper arm and guides her onto the plane. The moment they step on however the mother frowns as a strong tremble flashes underneath her grip around her child's arm.

"Lexi?" Shelby cautiously speaks, her eyes trying to gauge why her eldest child was trembling from head to toe so suddenly beside her.

Lexi feels a flash of sweat suddenly spills from her forehead and her bending legs almost disappear completely underneath her. If it wasn't for her mother holding her arm the young brunette would likely have hit the deck.

"I tripped." Lexi instantly lies, her heartbeat near the rate of explosion at this point but still the sixteen year old was refusing to show, what to her was her weakness.

Green eyes narrow in suspicion at her child's explanation but realising they were holding up the plane being boarded, the mother reluctantly nods in agreement and just guides Lexi towards her seat.

"Okay, well you are sitting here and we will be talking about your attitude later on." Shelby informs Lexi sternly before standing up straight again and looking for Amanda. There was still a final headcount of the VA members to be done to make sure no one was missing and it quickly over takes the stressed older woman's thoughts.

'Well, I somehow got away with that one. For now.' Lexi reminds herself within the confines of her mind as now sat down in her seat at least the chances of her collapsing to the floor were less significant.

Letting out a breath of relief, Lexi looks to her side as she was on an aisle seat and notices Rachel was about two seats down the row from her. Quickly the protective older sister scans the plane for any sign of Jesse, the fear he would be sat near the younger brunette instant in her heart. Thankfully though the male lead is two rows back and Lexi feels assured enough that it' enough distance not to worry the entire flight about him getting to close to her fragile sister.

Continuing to see where everyone had been sat, Lexi looks across the small aisle her other side and notices two seats remained empty. Almost as if on cue this is the point both her mother and Amanda take their seats and just to top off her insecurities and worries, the two women sit in those taunting empty eats beside her.

Bowing her head the long haired teenager just lifts her hands up to grip into her pulled back brown locks which were in a messy side bun. Wanting to rip a few handfuls from the roots Lexi just instead takes in some deep breaths as the flight crew start their pre flight routines and send another round of panic through the young girl's heart.

'Fuck my life.' Lexi's mind chants at disbelief at her luck and her stupidity for having put herself in this position to start off with.

Satisfied that she wasn't missing any teenagers and everyone was where they were supposed to be, Shelby lets herself relax down in to her seat. The flight wouldn't be overly long but it was one of the only times where she knew one hundred percent she could be sure where each of the children in her care would be and that they were safe.

'First major hurdle down, we all made it to the airport, on time may I add. Score to me.' Shelby makes a mental note of her accomplishment with glee before re-entering the real world around her and noticing Lexi sat across the aisle from her.

Suddenly a flash of both concern and realisation hit the mother's heart and head at the same time. The shaking, sweating, attitude and now scrunched up positioning in the seat were clear signs and Shelby feels her heart plummet from having not put the dots together sooner. Reaching across the small aisle between them, a tender hand reaches out and pats Lexi's jogger clad thigh.

'Oh I am the worst mother. How didn't I know she's scared of flying? I didn't even ask, I just presumed.' Shelby mentally chastises herself before shaking her self-criticism away for now so she can focus on helping the clearly petrified sixteen year old beside her.

"Lexi, baby? You and Amanda are going to change seats. No arguments just do it." Shelby firmly instructs her startled daughter, 'Coach' Corcoran most definitely making an appearance.

The sudden news takes her assistant, who was sat happily beside her by surprise. Amanda could tell by the tone in her boss's voice that this was an instruction for both the teenager and the herself, a grown woman.

With an apologetic look in her eyes Shelby nods her thanks to the always easy going blonde teacher as without a word of refusal or even questioning, Amanda jumps up from her seat and shuffles across to Lexi's instead. To make it an easier transition, Shelby quickly takes her place in Amanda's seat so Lexi can just transfer across in one movement and take her seat instead.

Lexi was far too deeply in the throes of panic stricken fear to argue as her body just reacts to her mother's instructions and she shakily gets up from her seat. Unsure what to do next, the brunette teen feels the soft skin of her mother's hand take her own and guide her across the small aisle before placing her safely in what had just previously been Shelby's seat.

With her own heart lodged somewhere inside her throat, Shelby keeps her hand tightly gripped around Lexi's. The mother could feel every inch of her baby shuddering as if ice cold water was running through her veins.

Sheepishly the terrified sixteen year old allows her watery gaze to lift up and connect with the concerned look from her mother. Guilt hits the brunette like a truck and Lexi's plump lower lip even starts to quiver as the green orbs seemingly read her soul.

Shaking her head in a delicate manner, Shelby squeezes Lexi's hand before lifting her arm and wrapping it around the teen's shoulders. Feeling no resistance to the embrace the choir coach then checks to make sure Lexi's seatbelt is buckled as the flight crew make their final checks before going in to their pre flight routine.

Lexi continues to watch her mother in a rather bewildered manner, her eyebrows even knitting into what Shelby finds as a cute frown. Offering a sweet smile and pulling her eldest daughter in closer to her, despite the chair arm between them, Shelby attempts to, for now, silence Lexi's confusion.

"Okay, now the plane is going to make some loud noises as it gets ready for takeoff. It will feel fast when we go down the runway but I have you and if you feel anything, just hold on to me." Shelby informs the still silent brunette now cocooned within her arms.

Tilting her head slightly in order to keep the eye connection with the calm and collected older version of herself, Lexi just stares into Shelby's eyes. In a way the frightened girl was searching for something, maybe a hint of a lie or deceit but all Lexi finds is a comfort and love she has come to expect from the woman she got to call her mom.

'She looks like she did as a toddler. Looking up at me for some kind of answer and protection. I worry that she's growing up too fast, that they both are and that I've missed so much. It's moments like this though when I am reminded no matter how old they are, they will always be my babies.' Shelby's mothering inner voice comments as she raises her free hand and gently cups Lexi's, slightly flushed cheek.

"I'm your mom and I swear, I am not going to let anything bad happen to you." Shelby assures in a soft tone as she can tell right now all her daughter was hearing and focusing on was her.

As just what the older Corcoran woman had described starts to take place, Lexi's chocolate brown eyes freeze but a reassuring squeeze from Shelby helps Lexi relax, all be it only slightly. Her normally confident bravado had been stripped away and what was left was a child seeking reassurance from her parent.

As the trusts propel the plane off of the tarmac and in to the air, Lexi feels as though every organ in her body is about to take its chance and escape. The young brunette's body jolts from terror as the unfamiliar sensation and surroundings overcome her. In a knee jerk reaction to try and feel more stable, Lexi's arm wraps it's self, rather awkwardly considering their positioning, around Shelby's waist and buries her face into her mother's chest and neck. In a sense the sixteen year old was shielding herself from the experience which was bringing her such terror.

'My poor baby, she's absolutely terrified. I've seen her heartbroken before but this is just sheer fear.' Shelby comments silently to herself as she does her best to wrap her child up within the security of her arms.

"I have you baby, you're safe." The mother of the two brunettes softly whispers into the shell of her eldest child's ear as Lexi leans into the embrace a little more. Even with the armrest of the chair digging into her ribcage it didn't stop the sixteen year old from seeking the contact of her mother even more.

"Please, don't let go." Lexi pleads in a small child's voice as she keeps her head firmly buried within the safety of her mother's chest and neck. Her eyes were tightly screwed shut and the teen was desperately trying to focus on anything other than the fact she was on a plane right now.

Feeling her heart shatter inside her chest, Shelby forces herself to remain composed and just kisses the top of Lexi's head. With a deep intake of breath to stop from crying, the mother of two rubs her hand rhythmically up and down Lexi's back as she grips that little bit tighter.

"Never." The mother assures in the same whisper she was using before. Closing her own eyes for a moment Shelby mentally kicks herself for having not noticed this would be a problem sooner.

It takes a while but once the plane straightens out and the seatbelt signs are turned off, the passengers of the flight all go in to their flight routines. Most of the Vocal Adrenaline team members were sat next to one another so were either using the time to talk or catch up on some sleep they missed from the early flight.

Rachel had taken a trick out of her sister's book and decided to use her headphones and music as a way to pass the time. It was still a conscious fight within the fourteen year olds mind for Rachel not to allow her crippling fears over her 'fan' enter her thoughts.

'You promised yourself Rachel. No more thinking about or worrying yourself in to an early grace about the 'fan' situation. Unfortunately it will be waiting for you once you arrive back home, so why allow it to destroy this trip? You have worked so hard for this, it means the world to you so the question is Rachel Barbra, are you really going to allow something you can't change now anyway ruin your once in a lifetime experience?' Rachel's mind questions sternly as the diva in training pushes the building fears out of her conscious thought, at least for now.

Nodding her head in confirmation of the decision she had just made to herself, Rachel sits up a little straighter in her seat and starts to look over the plane. It was mainly filled with business people, in no doubt off to New York for some high stress situation meetings or deadlines.

'I wonder if any of them work in the entertainment industry? Maybe a budding producer or up and coming director?' Rachel's inquisitive thoughts ponder the options silently as her brown eyes continue to look over her fellow passengers.

Spotting Amanda sat at the end of her row, the young singer frowns slightly. Looking past the assistant coach, Rachel's brown eyes spot a huddled up version of her sister seemingly curled in to the arms of their mother. Rachel feels her heart constrict with worry as to what must have happened to get Lexi in to this state and suddenly guilt starts to seep into the possibilities running through her young mind.

'Oh dear Barbra, could Lexi be in this condition because of how I acted at the airport? Did my dismissive attitude towards her possibly joining VA really cut so deep that Lexi has been left like this?' The fourteen year olds inner voice rambles out the questions in rapid succession as Rachel attempts to peer over the top of everyone's heads and get a better view of both her sister and mother.

Cursing the fact she had not been blessed like her sister with the height gene, Rachel flops back in to her seat and just sighs. The younger Corcoran daughter knew she had been out of order with her behaviour towards Lexi before and had already rehearsed her apology in her head numerous times. Never in her preparation however did the fourteen year old foresee what she did could have affected her sister so significantly.

Realising she was helpless to do anything to correct her mistake now, Rachel lets her attention move down to her iPod. The music she was currently listening to was going to be the best way for the teenager to escape both her thoughts and now heavy guilt.

"Rach, can we talk?" A muffled voice overcomes the music within the earphones Rachel had plugged in to each ear and her stomach twists realising it was indeed Jesse. His voice was unmistakable and the hesitant hand being placed on her shoulder is just another reason why Rachel jumps in her seat from shock.

Starring in to the blue eyes of the male lead of Vocal Adrenaline, the diva in training can't help but feel her resolve to deny his offer crumble around her. He looked deeply emotional, something which the cocky fourteen year old normally only used when performing,.

'This could be a performance Rachel, you know firsthand he is clearly well trained in masking his true feelings and intentions.' The bitter tone of Rachel's inner thoughts cause the girl's brow to knit in to a frown but Jesse's tender smile in return quickly breaks that defence down.

Tugging her left headphone from her ear, Rachel gives a half shrug of agreement towards Jesse's proposal of talking and motions to the empty seat across the aisle from her. One of the VA members had switched with Jesse, clearly something he had arranged before the flight even took off but for now Rachel would let it go.

"What do you want Jesse?" Rachel cuts straight to the point and deadpans her boyfriend with a look which was clearly inherited from all female members of her family.

Jesse knew the diva in training would be hostile and understandably so but even he hadn't anticipated the cold glare he had just received. Taking a second to absorb the non physical blow, the male lead of Vocal Adrenaline pushing some of his hair back from his face.

"I want to talk to you, properly. I know I behaved appealingly towards you and I need to tell you how sorry I am for that." Jesse expresses tenderly, his body leant over his knees so he is closer to Rachel who is unmoved in her seat.

On the opposite side of the plane, Lexi lifts her head for the first time from her mother's chest and starts to collect herself. As brown eyes scan the cabin she instinctively looks over to see how her little sister is doing. Expecting to see Rachel zoned out with her music or perhaps writing notes furiously into a note pad for the competition, the older sibling is shocked to see the fourteen year old sat almost sideways in her seat.

'That stupid waffle boy, he is dead.' Lexi's inner voice mutters within the confines of her brain as her tall frame starts to get up. Despite the fact Rachel had previously angered and hurt Lexi it wasn't about to stop the passionate protective streak from igniting inside the sixteen year old sister.

Feeling the sudden shift in her child, Shelby's green eyes quickly clock what is causing Lexi to try and shoot to her feet. Feeling a strong urge to join her daughter, the sensible side of Shelby's brain thankfully wins out.

'No, this is a confined space and causing a scene is not going to benefit anyone, least of all Rachel. She is fourteen and this is a personal issue, 'Mama Bear' Corcoran and 'Gladiator Big Sister' need to sit this out.' The calming voice explains to Shelby instantaneously as her strong arms wrap once more around Lexi's body. This time however the mother wasn't trying to comfort and calm her scared child but instead stopping her furious and protective one from murdering a fourteen year old.

Feeling the familiar strength of her mother's arms around her body Lexi's face balls into a frustrated sneer as she is forced back into her seat. If the tall teenager were a cartoon, her ears would have steam streaming from them and puffs of smoke escaping her nostrils.

Having to bite back a smile at the fact Lexi was reacting similarly to how she would have as a small toddler, Shelby bites the inside of her cheek to stop from laughing. This was serious damn it.

"Lexi, I know you want to go over there and play 'big sister' but Rachel seems to be doing just fine." Shelby informs her eldest daughter as the brunette teenager huffs dramatically as her arms cross over her chest.

"But after what he-" Lexi hesitantly starts to argue the point but is quickly interrupted by her mother shaking her head faintly as the two lock eyes.

'I hate it when she does this, I turn into a helpless obedient puppy. I make myself sick.' Lexi's inner monologue concludes within the safety of just her own head. Shelby's green eyes were an intimidating force and were sending a clear message for the sixteen year old to drop the subject and do as she was told.

Shelby smiles to herself as the furrowed brow currently forming on her daughter's forehead starts to loosen up slightly. The mother knew Lexi deep down understood why Shelby was stepping in gut she also couldn't blame the sister for being overly protective with everything the sisters had been through.

Sitting back more relaxed in her own seat, the mother of two lifts up her arm and wraps it gently around Lexi's slightly hunched up shoulders.

"Look at her honey, she's standing her ground with him. You can tell she's the one in full control of the conversation by the way Jesse can't even fully look at her. He is riddled with guilt and so he should be as well. If you ask me, it looks like your our darling Rachel has learnt a few lessons from her big sister." Shelby points out what to her was obvious before kissing Lexi's now relaxing forehead and holding her closer.

Lexi's chocolate brown eyes observe the scene of her sister and Jesse talking across the plane and despite herself the sixteen year old finds her mother's suggestions to be seemingly accurate. It was an odd realisation for the brunette as part of her was proud of her sister for standing up for herself and the other couldn't help but feel partly useless.

"You're probably right but I'm not going to stop watching, just encase." Lexi states with fake confidence as her mother pats her arm and nods in agreement and a tender smile across plump lips.

"You and me both sweetie, you and me both." Shelby agrees with a nod as her green eyes make sure to watch every last move Jesse makes. The first sign of Rachel becoming upset and it wouldn't be Lexi that Jesse would have to watch out for because 'Mama Bear' Corcoran would then be unleashed.

Completely unaware of the fact her conversation with Jesse had an audience, Rachel feels her entire posture straighten at the fourteen year olds statement. Shaking her head slightly in disbelief the young singer takes in a breath before responding.

"So once again this is about you and somehow satisfying your needs?" Rachel retorts in a sharp and pointed tone which again catches Jesse slightly off guard.

Folding her arms protectively across her chest, the diva in training forces herself to keep eye contact with Jesse in an attempt to overcome the affect it has on her.

'Keep your arms folded and he can't get to the heart he so well and truly shattered,' Rachel dramatically informs herself as she waits for the fourteen year old boy to respond.

Jesse slides his hands down the front of his skinny, dark blue jeans and slowly nods his head, clearly with regret. Blue eyes stares deeply in to Rachel's chocolate brown ones and he just gives an understanding yet sad smile.

"It's not about me Rachel. I hurt you and yes that cripples me but so it should. I took you and what we had for granted by acting like some pig headed jock only after one thing. The truth is that is not how I feel about you and especially about us as a couple." Jesse reveals in an attempt to try and at least get Rachel to hear him out.

Scoffing slightly at the words Rachel shakes her head in refusal to believe what Jesse was telling her despite her heart telling her to do the opposite.

"Do you have any idea how what you said to me made me feel? I thought me and you had connected on a much deeper and definitely a more mature level than just physical attraction and... sex." Rachel whispers the final word as nervous brown eyes quickly check around her to make sure only Jesse had heard her say such a word in public.

Bowing his head in regret and shame, Jesse just gives a slow nod of acceptance for his actions and the clear pain they had caused.

"I don't think you do understand Jesse. You made me feel as though all I was to you was some trophy and that I was only worthy in your eyes of our relationship if I allowed it to go to the next level. I told you I was not ready for that and I thought you understood." Rachel continues, the words now flowing at a faster speed than before as both of her arms fall from their crossed position to just gripping her knees.

Attempting to open his mouth and explain himself, Jesse is quickly shot back down into silence by Rachel's wide eyes staring at him in warning.

"There is nothing you can say to me Jesse, nothing. You betrayed the trust I had in you and the confidence I had that you truly understood me and more importantly cared about my feelings. We are team mates for Vocal Adrenaline and I intend to do everything I can to insure we win Nationals but as far as me and you in any social context, I think for now at least it is best we don't have any." Rachel states clearly, the words starting to wobble towards the end but an inner strength somehow pulls them out without the fourteen year old falling apart.

Shaken by Rachel's request and the depth of the pain he had caused the girl he loved, Jesse just respectfully nods his head and rises up from the seat. His hand gently reaches out though and just grazes the top of Rachel's shoulder as he prepares to go back to his original seat.

"I understand Rach and I promise you I will not make this weekend any harder for you. Just please know that despite what you think and feel, I am truly sorry." Jesse pleads a final time before he walks away, his head not having the nerve to raise up so instead he stares down at his feet.

As the male lead of Vocal Adrenaline suddenly stands up and takes his leave, both Shelby and Lexi nearly get whiplash but turning their heads away. If Lexi could whistle she would just to add to the fact she was obviously doing anything but watching over her sister.

Catching the suspicious movements from across the plane, the youngest Corcoran girl just levels an unpleased glare from her seat. For once Rachel is able to use the 'Corcoran' eyebrow on both her mother and sister and takes the opportunity gleefully.

'Subtle Lex, you too mama.' Rachel telepathically comments to the two brunette who were still playing the part of being distracted by something else other than the young fourteen year olds love life.

"Yeah so we've been made." Lexi comments through the side of her mouth with a slight shrug of her shoulders. She could see Rachel wasn't actually mad and she could also see that her younger sister was left for the most part unaffected by the conversation with Jesse.

Turning her head slowly and as casually as she could manage towards Rachel, Shelby slowly nods her head in agreement.

"Oh big time." The mother concludes before giving a concerned look across the plane towards her youngest daughter. Although Rachel seemed to be okay the older Corcoran woman knew all too well that looks could be deceiving, especially with her daughters.

The look sent across the plane was a silent question which Rachel was able to read and hear loud and clear. Her lips twitch at the corner from a smile as the fourteen year old can feel the love and support even across the aircraft from her mother.

'I'm okay Mama.' Rachel mouths in reply, her head nodding for added assurance to her message. She appreciated the concern though and understood why both her mother and sister had been watching her. What happened with Jesse had hit the teenager hard but little did they know most of her unusual behaviour was actually stemming from something else entirely.

'I hope you are baby. God, why can't my girl's just be nuns and make my life somewhat easier?' Shelby internally questions as another stress inducing part of being a mother makes its impact on the choir coach.

Lexi watches Rachel communicate silently with their mother and watches every one of her little movements closely. If anyone was going to be able to read the diva in training than it was no doubt that person would be Lexi.

'She's okay, really okay. Good for her not letting that pest get to her. Apparently my warning did nothing though, maybe I need to be a little less delicate with him next time.' Lexi surmises within her own thoughts before giving a soft smile towards her sister who was now focused on her. It was the first interaction between the sisters since Rachel shot down the mention of Lexi possibly joining VA at the airport.

Fully aware what she had done earlier was still playing on her older sister's mind and heart leaves Rachel with a sinking sensation inside her stomach and chest. The younger brunette regretfully turns back to facing the front of the plane and mentally thinks over how she is going to apologise.

Lexi chews on her bottom lip for a moment as Rachel turns away and slowly the older of the two siblings allows her own attention to turn away. Resting her head against Shelby's chest once more, the sixteen year old reaches out and delicately takes the older woman's hand in her own.

"About before, freaking out. I'm sorry." Lexi whispers apologetically, her voice quiet from a mix of embarrassment and sadness.

Having not been expecting an apology from Lexi for what had happened at take off, Shelby frowns briefly before putting the two things together. A sympathetic smile cross her face and she gently intertwines her fingers with Lexi's and squeezes gently.

"You don't have to apologize baby. I wish you would have said something before though, I could have made sure we were sat together and I would have helped you through it all morning." Shelby responds in a kind way but still manages to get her point across.

A silence overcomes the mother and daughter duo as Lexi's eyes seemingly become transfixed by both her and her mother's hands. Turning them slowly to different angles the teenager notices many similarities between them and smiles at the realisation.

"I've never been on a plane before. I knew I was worried about it but I guess I didn't think I would quite freak out... well, like I ended up doing. I thought I could just-" Lexi starts to explain her thinking process when her mother knowingly interrupts.

"You thought you could deal with it on yourself and probably ignore it and then it would go away?" Shelby surmises knowingly as Lexi somewhat curls into herself while still resting against her mother's frame.

Nothing needed to be said between the two brunettes as they each know Shelby couldn't have been more correct if she tried. It was an obstacle the mother and daughter had faced before and both knew they would again, there was no easy fix.

'Stubborn, so stubborn. It breaks my heart and infuriates me at the same time.' Shelby inner voice comments with an almost laugh as the mother reaches up and just strokes across her child's forehead as they sit quietly together.

"I understand you were going through something Lexi, I do. However if you ever snap at me like that again you will find out that having attitude with me is deadly." Shelby warns pointedly, her voice cutting through the silence and straight into her daughter's heart.

Freeing for a moment to fully take in her mother's not so subtle warning, the tall brunette just slowly nods her head in understanding.

"Noted." Lexi answers simply knowing anything else she said would likely be a mistake on her part and the teen felt as though she had already made enough of them for one day.

Shelby smiles to herself at the reaction and pulls Lexi in a little closer before kissing the top of her daughter's head once more.

"The plane is going to land soon but I 'm going to be right next to you the whole time okay? Talk to me if you need to and it helps, whatever you need. I'm your mother Lexi and being on this trip with Vocal Adrenaline doesn't change that. I know you know you can but I just want to remind you, you can always come to me, no matter what." Shelby informs a now rather sombre Lexi who just nods faintly in response.

"I know mom, I know. I'm trying and I am getting better although it probably doesn't seem that way." Lexi relents, a slight sadness to her words feeling as though in some way she had once again let her mother down.

Sensing and hearing the self deprecation returning to her eldest child's voice Shelby is quick to sit up straighter in her seat and gently takes hold of both of Lexi's shoulders so the young girl is facing her. The younger brunette resists for a split second as she feels vulnerable and somewhat exposed.

'Oh no you don't baby girl, you're not avoiding this because it's difficult.' Shelby informs her daughter silently as she looks deeply into the big brown eyes of the sixteen year old. Shelby gently cups her beautiful little girl's face and brings their forehead close together.

"Lexi, you need to really listen to me sweetie. I am your mother and no matter what I am always here for you and your sister. The fact you found it hard to come to me and tell me what you were feeling is not something you should beat yourself up about, do you hear me? You've been left to your own devices for a LONG time, you can't just flick a switch and suddenly erase all that, as much as we wish we could. I'm not mad at you baby, I hurt for you. I hate the thought of you feeling like you have to face anything alone but the fact you feel that way is not your fault, not at all." Shelby declares passionately, her eyes filling with tears which instantly cause Lexi's to react in a similar way.

'Every damn time she does this and makes me cry. I never cried before, never. Well, not in front of anyone and especially not on a plane to New York. Fuck.' Lexi's brain rambles in a weak attempt to stop the young girl's emotions from overcoming her.

"Mom, please don't. I've already freaked out on this plane, now you're going to make me cry as well? Why do you hate me?" Lexi jokingly pleads with her mother who laughs in response before resting their forehead fully together and just cups her child's cheek with a delicate hand.

"Okay, okay no crying. I'm just saying remember I'm your mom, I love you and it's okay to find things hard sometimes." Shelby whispers out delicately as her fingers stroke a few strands which had escaped Lexi's messy bun back behind her daughter's ear.

Starring at her little girl's beautiful face though, Shelby can't help but grin with a mix of pride, admiration and a huge heap of adoring and unconditional love. Lexi returns the look before learning her head down and returning it to the safety of her mother's chest as they settle back in to their earlier position.

"I love you too mommy." Lexi whispers out so quietly part of her is sure her mother wouldn't be able to hear her but Shelby does and has to gulp back to the heart warming tears which the statement causes in her.

It isn't long until the plane lands in New York and soon the entire Vocal Adrenaline team, Lexi, Amanda and the team's choir coach are on the coach to the hotel. There was an electric buzz between the teenagers as their eyes light up at the views of the city that never sleeps which pass them by. Even Lexi found herself gawking out of the window as many famous landmarks reveal themselves with only the window glass as a separation.

Although intrigued by the surroundings she now found herself within, Rachel's mind was preoccupied with a gnawing guilt in the pit of her stomach. For her remaining time on the plane after talking with Jesse, all that the diva in training had been thinking about was what she was going to say to make things right with her older sister.

The small brunette watches her sibling as Lexi takes, predictably the back seat of the coach. Surprisingly she was alone as most of the rest of Vocal Adrenaline took up window seats in order to look out and be amazed. After nearly a full ten minutes though Rachel decides it is time to make her move and the petite teenager manoeuvres herself from one seat down to the back and finally beside Lexi.

'Why does everyone in my family have to be so intimidating, especially when trying to apologise too? Do I have the same affect on them I wonder?' Rachel's mind ponders before the fourteen year old refocuses and takes in a shaky deep breath as she stares at an otherwise distracted Lexi.

Trying to encourage herself to actually say something, Rachel shakily raises her hand but hesitates for a moment not sure if touching her sister without any warning was the brightest idea she had ever had.

'Perhaps a verbal start to this would be safer Rachel, this is Lexi you are dealing with. Her reflexes are usually naturally violent ones and you can't risk possibly injury so close to the competition.' Rachel mentally debates her options within the safety of her mind as she sheepishly returns her hand back down to her own lap.

"Rachel, you know I can see you in the reflection of the window right?" Lexi suddenly questions in a calm and collected manner. The sound of her sister's voice had not be expected by the fourteen year old and Rachel finds herself nearly falling to the floor of the coach.

'Gold Stars! I hate when she does that!' Rachel mentally curses her sister's seemingly inherited ninja skills and takes a few moments to try and regain her breath as Lexi turns away from the window to face the younger brunette.

Watching as her younger sibling recovers from her mini heart attack, Lexi is unable to hide the slight smirk of satisfaction which quickly rises up over her plump lips. There was always even the slightest of delights in the fact the sixteen year old was still able to do that to her baby sister.

Rachel's brown eyes glare momentarily at Lexi and her not so hidden smirk as she catches her breath. With a slow nod of her head, realising she likely had deserved that reaction Rachel pulls herself back together and sits up straight once more.

"Lexi, I owe you an apology for my earlier behaviour." Rachel declares, her voice strong and sincere as she looks deeply into her older sister's chocolate brown eyes.

Lexi finds herself almost frowning as Rachel surprises her with the intention to apologise for what had happened back at the airport. Almost having to check that she had heard correctly, the older brunette leans in a little closer to the diva in training.

'Rachel is apologising to me and I'm fairly sure no one is forcing her to do it. Holy shit, Santana should be here to see this.' Lexi's somewhat cynical inner thoughts comment before she nods to indicate her sister should continue.

"I apologize Lexi. What I said in response to Gemma mentioning you joining Vocal Adrenaline was cruel and selfish. I knew it would hurt you and yet I still did it, that is something I don't particularly like about myself and it's something I am deeply sorry for." Rachel explains, her own set of brown eyes starting to fill with emotions.

'Fuck, she's going to cry and then I'm going to cry. I can't handle this.' Lexi mutters to herself in the confines of her brain as she just continues to listen to her sister's seemingly heartfelt apology.

"It's not an excuse but I am nervous and excited for this competition and when I get in to these circumstances a lot of my attitude retreats back to when we were with our fathers. The truth is Lexi, I have many insecurities when it comes to you." The younger of the two sister's reveals honestly, her head lowering from the deep feeling of shame her words brought her.

Lexi feels her heart constrict at the revelation from her sister she had deep insecurities when it came to her. It was a gut shot for the sixteen year old and stops any words the older sister had been expecting to say in response.

"I suppose I am and always will be insecure around you. Singing, performing is all I have ever known and worked for and the thought of you coming in and taking that from me is terrifying. It's irrational and selfish of me I know but I find myself unable to help it. I am sorry for it though because I have no doubt if you had auditioned for VA you would be performing with us this weekend and rightly so." Rachel sincerely attempts to explain her rather childish reaction to the simple statement from Gemma.

Lexi feels a rush of blood hit her heart at the fact her younger sister was sincerely apologizing to her. The fact Rachel hadn't needed a prompt from someone else was not missed by the sixteen year old either. Understanding Rachel had deep rooted insecurities which stemmed from how she had been parented all of her life by their father's the taller brunette feels her heart go out to her younger sister.

"I'm sorry Lexi, truly I am. I never intended to hurt your feelings but I know I have. I allowed my insecurities about myself overcome me and so I lashed out in a way to try and protect myself. Like I previously said, I know it's not an excuse but I feel you at least are owed some form of an explanation." Rachel adds with a heaviness to her voice as she sheepishly allows her eyes to fully connect with those of her sister.

Taking a second to absorb her sister's words, the older of the two Corcoran girls slowly reaches next to Rachel and grips her hand tenderly. The action causes a small smile to flutter across Rachel's face and in turn Lexi's does the same.

"I do get it Rach I do. I just, I'd never do anything to take performing or singing away from you. I couldn't even if I wanted to or tried. The fact you still feel you have to react like that, with me especially that really hurts." Lexi admits as her brown eyes lock on to her younger sister's and say more than the words she spoke did.

Rachel feels the guilty knot within her stomach tighten from Lexi's words. The stress she was keeping hidden to do with the 'fan' was clearly putting the fourteen year old on edge even more than usual but the diva in training knew all too well she couldn't blame that all on how she had acted. It worried Rachel that her insecurities to do with performing, especially with Lexi, were still so sharp and intense.

"You're a star remember? My Star but also Rach, you're more than just what you can do with your voice when you're on a stage. Don't forget that either yeah?" Lexi reminds her younger sibling kindly, the fact Rachel put such weight in the significance behind her performing was a gut shot to the taller brunette.

Rachel nods her head in agreement to her sister's words when they both feel the coach stop and spot their mother standing up at the front and without a word beckoning everyone's attention.

"We are here ladies and gentlemen. This is it, we have made it to Nationals." Shelby announces to the now excited and pumped up coach full of teenagers.

Looking to Lexi, Rachel squeezes her sister's hand and smiles brightly hoping things were now okay between the two. The fact is cemented however as Lexi returns the squeeze and gives her baby sister a meaningful wink followed by her mouthing to the young singer.

"You're here Star and you're going to shine.'

"This is where the hard work really begins though, don't forget that. Now, we are here and I know we're ready for Nationals and for New York, let's hope New York is ready for all of us." Shelby declares with confidence as everyone starts to stand and get off of the coach.

Both Lexi and Rachel are the last two off and by now Amanda was already inside with the other team members checking everyone in. Shelby of course wasn't going anywhere without her two daughters by her side. As the three brunettes stand together in front of the hotel, Shelby holds an arm around each girl's shoulders.

"You ready girls?" The mother questions as the three of them strain their necks to look up at the large, grand building in front of them.

Looking to Rachel on the other side of their mother, Lexi just confidently nods her head in agreement as the youngest brunette takes in the scene before her. With a final big breath the fourteen year old grins brightly and takes the first step forward.

"Gold Stars Yes!"

And we reach the end of yet another chapter.

I really cannot say thank you enough to those of you who have stuck with me through this story and the journey it has taken both in my personal life and the storylines themselves. You have truly kept me going and for that I owe you so much more than I can repay.

To the wonderful, thoughtful and amazing people who left me a review, if possible an even bigger thank you is owed to you all. The reviews are an energy boost as well as priceless feedback for me which I hope means I am able to put out the best possible content for you all to again hopefully enjoy. I read every single one and take them on board with every word I write so please know they are deeply appreciated. They make all the long hours, worrying if I am writing something that even makes sense and trying desperately to keep to the timeframe, beyond worth it. Knowing what you are thinking, feeling, expecting, wanting, suspecting, ideas, opinions, views and everything else is worth its weight in pure gold for me. I write this for all of you to hopefully enjoying and knowing all that is a help in making that come to true in ways I can't even describe. For each review I owe a huge thank you and the more detailed the better, so thank you.

As always I will do everything in my power to get the next update out to you all within the month time limit I set myself. Your patience and understanding for the gaps between chapters is something I appreciate fully and once more can't say thank you for enough. I do have some hospital visits upcoming, as always with me but I will do my best, I assure you.

Also please never feel afraid to tell me what you would like to see, ideas and the such. I may not always be able to use them or not in the next chapter but I take them all on board and promise if I can in some way use them, with my own spin I will.

so until next time stay safe, happy and well ;;'x
