AN: Sorry about that random update false alarm yesterday. The chapter managed to delete itself and I had to repost it. But anyway, here's the next chapter. Enjoy.
Jacob knelt before me as I sat on the edge of our bed, my hands in his warm ones. You sure you're up to this?" He asked, looking up at me with concern and worry. It looked like he thought I was about to make a life altering decision that I might regret. It made me smile, his worry, because all I said was I'd be okay for the baby shower today. Even though I'd been feeling down the past few days, my spirits had lifted, very much because of his efforts. He'd asked me the day before, the night before and in the morning when we woke up if I was going to feel well enough and each time I told him the same thing.
"Jacob," I said, squeezing his hand a little, "I'll be fine. Don't worry."
And he managed to ask me at least two more times while I showered and ate breakfast.
My mom, having arrived in Seattle the day before, came early to help Angela put up her duckling decorations and set up the living room (that would be the main area for the occasion.) She was very impressed by Angela's ideas and I knew the two of them would go on like that for a while. When they were done, the guests started arriving. First was Charlie and Phil, who got comfortable with a beer and a game on Tv. Next was Billy, Rachael, Paul and Seth, who all came together. Quil followed after them, having been a little delayed by trying to get Claire ready. Kate, Eric and Ben came next, Benjamin right behind them. Much to Angela's excitement, Embry showed up with his usually grin. He couldn't avoid the hug she forced on him and decided he wasn't going to fight it. Jessica arrived last.
"Paul!" I squealed when he first arrived. "My bestest buddy in the whole wide world!" I tossed my arms around his waist dramatically.
He hugged me back and I knew he would have given me one of his crushing hugs if I hadn't been so hugely pregnant. "Bella! My BFFAE!"I grinned up at him wildly with a question on my face. "My Best Friend Forever And Ever, of course."
I laughed at that and I knew that I hadn't been up for a shower when Jacob asked me, I was definitely up for it after Paul lifted my spirits. "It's been way too long, my BFFAE! Look at you, all handsome and stuff."
"Ha," he scoffed. "It's nothing compared to your radiant shine. This pregnancy glow stuff is really sexy on you." That earned him a smack from Rachael while Jacob only shook his head at us.
Once everyone was there, Angela told everyone to shut the fuck up and got us all seated.
Once we were all quite, Angela had me and Jacob seated together on the couch she moved into the dining room. The table was covered with a duckling table cloth and pushed into a corner where the presents were all placed in their duckling gift wrap. Everyone was seated around us and to one side, the Tv sat on it's stand across from Jacob and I with the DVD player placed on a shelf below it. Angela started with an introduction to the party.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today-" Eric threw a paper cup at her head and she glared at him.
"What?" He asked. "It's not a wedding."
Everyone laughed and when Angela was done glaring, she continued. "Fine then," she sighed and started over. "Bella and I have been friends since high school and Jacob's been on TV since I was in high school." We all laughed. "So I've practically known these two people for the better part of my life. Like I was trying to say," she gave Eric a dirty look, "we've gathered here today, Jacob's friends and family, Bella's friends and family, to celebrate that these two people," she said, gesturing to where Jacob and I were seated, "are bringing a new life into this world.
"We all know how awesome these two, separately and together. And now, god has taken some of Bella's awesomeness and some of Jacob's awesomeness and has mashed it into one tiny bundle of awesomeness. And best of all, that kid is gonna have some of our awesomeness too." Eric, Ben, Paul and Benjamin all cheered. "He or she is gonna have some Charlie and Renee, Billy and Sarah somewhere in there. Rachael, Rebecca and Riley will feature in there too. He or she will inherit some of Jacob's caring and Bella's peacefulness. Claire will be a big sister and Quil will be the responsible, loving uncle. The three idiots in the corner," she pointed at Ben, Eric and Benjamin. "will be the uncles who get the kid into trouble but teach important life lessons in the process. Paul will be the fun uncle that we worry about but will take on bullies and , if it's a girl, ward off the boys. Jessica will give terrible relationship advice that will leave Bella and Jacob specialising in damage control. Seth, your job will be to protect this baby from your sister and at the same, train and mentor in Leah Survival 101. But most of all, we'll all be a part of this child's family and we should all be honoured to play a role in it's life. So to round off what I'm trying to say," she turned to Jacob and placed her hand on his shoulder. "Thanks for knocking her up and giving the rest of us a purpose in life."
Everyone one laughed and applauded Angela's speech as she took a bow at the waist, clearly proud of herself.
Then it was time for each of our parents to speak. Renee spoke about when she was pregnant with me and all the odd things she was craving. She said he could already tell that I was going to be a special child. Charlie's words were more emotional. He spoke about what kind of person I was in the times we were together. How I was so like him in appearance and personality. He spoke about my first fishing trip at four years old, just me and him and the fish.
I got all teary-eyed and had to wipe streaks from my face.
Billy cheered us up with a story about how Jacob decided he wanted to make movies. He spoke about how he was obsessed with the Jurassic Park movie and constantly went on and on about how they made the dinosaurs come alive even when nobody was listening. And then he spoke about how his only son was now an honourable man and how proud he was of him.
Rachael told of how she and her sister had enjoyed having a little brother that they could love and hug and spoil. At the end she mentioned how her childhood was worlds better with a little brother like Jake.
Next, we opened presents. All the gifts were wrapped in duck wrapping. All the gifts were really fantastic but the ones that stood out were the story books from Renee, the mobile from Charlie, a fuzzy duck hat with a beak from Paul and those strap things parents used to strap babies to their bodies from Quil. Quil's present was made that much more adorable by the really confusing picture of ducks, hand drawn my Claire herself. As Jacob and I looked at the picture, we weren't quite sure that Claire new what ducks were. But the gesture itself was beautiful. At the bottom, in handwriting far to clear to belong to a three year, were the words,
For Unca Jay and Miss Bella, love Claire.
But the most beautiful gift came from someone who was no longer with us. Rachael, with tears threatening her eyes, presented us with an old, leather bound journal that must have been from ages and ages ago. With it, there was a letter and as Rachael handed it to us, she said, "This is from our mother to you. She made it a long time ago when the three of us were babies and she told Billy that she wanted to give it to you when you had your first child. So here."
At first, Jacob just stared at the book. But with a pat on the lap from me, he finally looked up and saw that Rachael had a piece of paper in her hands that she'd wanted to read.
She read out loud for us:
To my only son Jacob,
When your sisters were born, I was I a new mother without a clue on how to look after a baby and I was completely scared out of my wits. I was afraid that I would be a bad mother and had a panic attack at every corner. Your father was utterly useless, so I had to learn to be a mom.
When I had you, the girls had grown up and had learned, by you, how to take care of a baby. But when you grow up, who would teach you?
So I made this book, full off everything I learnt on how to be a first time dad so that you wouldn't be as helpless as your father and I. I want you to help your partner in all things parenting and to be the brilliant father I know you will be. I hope you find everything you need in this book and add to it the new things you'll learn from your baby. Who knows, you may even pass it down to a son some day.
Congratulations on your new baby and remember that I am very proud of you. I love you and your sisters, and I especially love my new grandson.
Good luck with parenthood,
Love, mom.
The letter left the entire room absolutely devastated and in tears. I had tear streaks down my cheeks, same as all the women in the room. The men were quiet and sombre, even Eric managing to be serious. Beside me, Jacob held the book tight, eyes wet with tear and his jaw tight in the effort of holding them back.
"That," Kate sniffed, the first to break the silence, "was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard."
And with that, the mood wasn't sad so much as touched and admiring. I put my arm around Jacob's waist and he put his around my shoulder with a kiss to my forehead. Everyone was too busy scrambling for tissues and handkerchiefs to notice our little moment. "Thank you for doing this with me," he whispered.
"Thank you for sharing it with me," I whispered back.
We kissed softly and smiled loving smiles.
"Enough feels for today," Angela announced with a sniff, demanding the attention back. "It's time fore the grand finale. The final gift, from Jacob and I, to the lovely Bella."
A present from Jacob? I looked to him for and explanation but he only smiled a little and got up. He held his hand out for me and I took it so that he could help me up. "Follow me, everybody!" Angela commanded, taking my other hand and leading me away from the decorated living room and towards the bedrooms. We stopped at the room reserved for the nursery and my eyes widened.
"You didn't," I gasped at her.
"Yes. Yes, we did." She got something out of her back pocket and put it in my hand. "Want to do the honours?"
At this, I was beyond excited but ever so surprised. I turned to Jacob, then to Angela and then back to Jacob. "But when?" I asked, so bewildered and amazed.
"Just open the door," Jacob breathed. "We'll tell you about that later."
So I put the key in the door and twisted it until the lock clicked open. "Go on," on Angela prompted. With a shaky hand, I twisted the door knob and pushed the door open.
The collective intake of breath belonged to both me and the guests of the the shower. As I stepped into the room, Jacob hand tight in my mine, I couldn't help but be in awe. The walls of the room were a light baby blue and the curtains were pale yellow, just like my bedroom back in Forks. The first things I noticed was the rocking chair that resembled the one that had been in my room since I was born, sitting right by the window on the left and I had to ask, "Is that . . ." my words trailed off, but Angela knew what I was asking.
"Yep. The very same one."
I also notice my baby cradle against the opposite wall, repainted but just as it had been in my baby days. The two. Huge windows brought so much light into the room, making the blue, white and yellow even brighter. There was a changing table, a huge teddy bear and toy chest in one corner. In the corner adjacent to the door was a bed for when baby ever got cold or something and one of would sleep in there that night, as Angela had explained. The once wood-panneled floor was now covered by a giant yellow carpet, and it looked as soft as a puppy. There were sillhouettes of swans on the closet doors and along the wall where it met the floor. "Blaaaack. Swaaaan. BlackSwan . . . Get it?" Angela pointed out with dragged out words and was very proud of that little detail and had to make sure that everyone had understood the significance behind it.
"Oh, you two, it's so beautiful. Thank you both so much! I love you guys."
We found ourselves in a three way hug and I got a kiss on the cheek from them both.
The rest of the day was celebrated with ice-cream cake and funny stories from when Jacob and I were kids, courtesy of our parents and a teasing Rachael. Most stories were funny, some were very touching, but the most important thing was that my family was all around me. Both sides of it. It made me so happy to know that my baby would be born into so much love, surrounded by such a diverse family.
AN: Okie dokie. Almost done. But before I start a new story, I think I better sqeeze in a few more chapter for my incomplete story, Run On Love. I don't think many of you have read it but I've decided to work on it a little. So I'll post a new chapter there before I post one here.
Until next time . . .
