Chapter 36
Violet looked around her newly painted and decorated room and smiled; she finally felt like she belonged. The room, which she helped design and paint was painted a light shade of blue and white. The bed from her old house and been brought into her new room as well as some of her furniture. In the corner there was a collection of all of her dolls and some nail polish and lip-gloss Eva had given her. On a bulletin board near her desk was a picture frame that been filled with pictures from her old house as well as some of her with Matt, Gabby the twins and other family members. One of her favourites was of her Rafael and Javier from a family photo shoot they had gotten done a week ago.
"Alright sweetheart," Gabby interrupted her thoughts; she walked into the room carrying Javier and Rafael on each hip. Setting them down on the floor with some toys she said. "Lets get started sorting through these clothes," She dumped two garbage bags of clothes on a hard wood floor.
When they were putting all her clothes away the other day they had discovered that a lot of Violet's clothes did not fit her anymore. With money being tight Matt and Gabby were wondering how much money they could spend on clothes when Laura and Antonio gave them give bags of Eva's old clothes they did not fit her anymore. Now they had sorted through all of Violet's clothes that didn't and did fit her and were now going to sort through Eva's clothes
"Okay," She picked up the smaller bag of clothes from the floor and dumped it on the floor with the rest of the clothes.
"We should make two piles," She began, "One for things you like and want to keep and one for things you don't like and want to give away with the rest of your clothes that don't fit," She got up and picked up one of the lighter garbage bags full of clothes to give away and put it in-between them.
Violet sat down next to her aunt and began sorting through all of the clothes. Since Eva was quite a few years older then her some of the clothes wouldn't fir her for a few years but others that were from a few years ago would. Twenty minutes later all of the clothes had been sorted and Violet had a huge pile of new clothes that she loved.
"Okay well how about we take these to a donation box and visit Uncle Matt at the station," She suggested.
"Can I change first?" She asked.
"Of course, I want to change the boys into something warmer and put sun screen on them anyways," She walked over to where her son's were playing and picked them both up and carried them out of the room.
Closing the door after her aunt left Violet changed into a pair of dark jean shorts and a purple tank top. She then snatched up Eva's old sunglasses she gave her and put them on top of her head. "Perfect," She smiled to herself and walked down the hallway and into the nursery.
There she saw Gabby had both twins lying on the double change table only in their diapers. "What are you doing?"
"I'm trying to decide what to dress them in. It's to cold for shorts but not cold enough for pants."
Violet wasn't sure what to say until she saw an outfit, "What about that?" She pointed out the outfit in the closet. It consisted of a red t-shirt that said 'future fire fighter' jean shorts and a navy blue zip-up jacket. "It has a jacket."
"You know what? I think that's a good idea," Gabby smiled and took both outfits off there hangers. "Good choice."
Violet just smiled and she watched Gabby dress both twins and then pick them both up along with a diaper bag she had filled.
"Can I help?" Violet asked. "I can carry the bag?"
Gabby thought about the suggestion for awhile, the bag was heavy and she didn't want Violet to fall on the stairs; on the other hand she ad never offered to help before and she didn't want to discourage it.
"If you promise to hold on to the railing on the stairs and walk slowly."
"I promise."
"Okay," Gabby took the bag off her shoulder and handed it over.
Violet swung the bag over her shoulder and used one hand to hold onto the railing going down the stairs. Gabby walking carefully behind her.
Once downstairs Violet got her shoes on and waited until Gabby had gotten the twins ready and then asked, "Can you help me tie up the laces?"
"Sure," Gabby nodded and placed the twins on the floor as she tied the laces and then picked them back up. Taking her purse and car keys she lead the way out to the van. Violet climbed in the car and into the back to do up her seatbelt.
Gabriela put Rafael into one of the car seats in the captain chairs and made sure he was securely strapped in before moving to the other side and doing the same with Javier. Fifteen minutes later she was getting into the driver's seat when Violet said, "Auntie Gabby I need to go to the washroom."
Taking a deep breath Gabby unbuckled her seatbelt and reached for her purse in the passenger seat. The thought of un-loading the twins from the car only to have to load them both up again made her frustrated so she made a quick decision to leave them in the car and to stand by the front door instead "Come on Violet," She took the house keys and got out of the car. She unlocked the front door and told Violet to go to the first floor washroom. Then she stood on the front steps and kept a close eye on the twins who were still in the car with both doors open.
"All done!" Violet came running out a short time later.
"Did you flush?"
"Yes."
"Wash your hands."
"Yes."
"Okay then, go get back in the car," She told her and then proceeded to lock up the house once again.
It was nearly an hour and a half after Gabby said they should go to the firehouse that they finally arrived. Gabby carrying Javier and Rafael and Violet running ahead of her.
"Uncle Matt!" She yelled as she got onto the apparatus floor, "Uncle Matt!"
Severide spun around in his chair not expecting Violet to come running up to him.
"Uncle Kelly!" She cheered happily running and jumping on him, "What are you doing?" She asked curiously as she looked at the other men sitting around the table.
"Talking," Severide responded.
"About what?"
"Violet," Gabby came onto the floor, "Leave Uncle Kelly alone he's busy."
Just then Shay came into view, "I thought I heard my favourite voice."
"Auntie Leslie!" Violet jumped off Kelly and into the awaiting arms of her godmother.
"Hi sweetheart. What's this?" She noticed the baby bag still on her shoulder.
"I'm helping Auntie Gabby," She stated proudly.
"Well that's very grown-up of you."
Violet beamed, "Thank you."
"Hey Leslie do you know where Matt is?" Gabby wondered.
"I think he's in his office."
"Thanks, come on Violet let's go surprise Uncle Matt."
Violet nodded her head and began to follow her aunt as soon as Shay placed her on the ground.
Once they got closer to Matt's office Gabby saw that he was focused on his work; she decided to surprise him, she knocked and then waited.
Matt turned and a huge smile appeared on his face as he quickly scrambled to his feet and opened the door.
Javier and Rafael babbled happily as they reached their father.
Matt took his sons into his arms and held them close as he kissed their heads, "You have no idea how much I needed this," He admitted to Gabby.
"Rough shift?" She reached out to caress his cheek.
"Tough call," He responded, "I needed a visit from my family."
"Uncle Matt do you like my outfit?" Violet asked.
"Yes its very pretty."
"Their Eva's old clothes, they're a little big but she'll grow into them." Gabby spoke next.
Matt was about to respond when the alarm bells went off.
"I'll see you at home," He quickly kissed Javier and Rafael and handed them to Gabby before kissing her and Violet and then running off.
Later that night dinner was cooking in the oven and Gabby was sitting at the kitchen table working on the adoption forums when Violet walked in, "What are you doing Auntie Gabby?"
"Well sweetheart, you know how Uncle Matt and I want to adopt you? All these are the forums we need to fill out in order to make sure that happens.
Sitting beside her Aunt Violet took a closer look at the stack of papers, "That's a lot of paper."
"Yes it is; but its worth it," She kissed her cheek.
This made Violet smile, "When is Uncle Matt going to be home?"
"Soon, his shift ended half an hour ago and he texted me to say he was on his way home."
"Auntie Gabby will I like my new school?" She wondered aloud as school started on Tuesday, in four days and she was nervous.
"Of course you will," Gabby promised, "Why are you nervous?"
"Uh-huh. Auntie Gabby I'm weird."
"What? Who told you that?" She was stunned by the young girls question.
"I don't have a Mommy and a Daddy anymore," Tears rolled down her face and only got bigger and faster, "I'm weird."
Gabby didn't hesitate to pull her into her arms and hug her, "You're not weird Violet. Don't you ever think that. Lots of kids have different families and even though you don't call Uncle Matt and I mom and dad we are your parents; that's why we're adopting you so we're officially and legally your parents and so Rafael and Javier can be your younger brothers."
Violet looked into her aunt's brown eyes before burying her head deeper into her chest. "I love you." She said through sobs.
"I love you too," Gabby repeated back stroking her hair.
Just then the garage door opened and Violet grinned, "Uncle Matt!" She jumped off Gabby's lap ad down the hall.
"How's my favourite girl?" He picked her up and sat her on his hip.
"Excuse me," Gabby sent him a playful glare as she walked up and gave him a kiss, "What I'm I then?"
Matt smirked, "Oh you know."
"Matt!" She blushed and smacked his arm.
"Right," He grinned back and watched her walk away before turning back to Violet, "How would you like to spend a shift with me at the firehouse next weekend?"
Violet's mouth grew into a shape of an 'o', "Can I?"
"Yep, I already cleared it with Chief Boden."
"Yay!" She cheered happily and was grinning from ear to ear when gabby walked back into the hallway carrying the twins.
"What's got you so happy?" She asked smiling.
"Uncle Matt's going to take me to work with him."
Gabby wasn't sure that was the greatest idea in the world but she knew that Matt only wanted to spend some more time with her. Plus she trusted him, he wouldn't' let anything happen to her. "Well that sounds like a lot of fun."
"I'm going to wear a red dress I think," She patted a finger to her chin.
At her actions Matt had to smile, "Oh really?" He tickled her sides causing her to laugh with glee, "A red dress?"
"Uncle Matt!" She laughed.
"Alright, alright," He smiled and set her down on the floor, "Go help your Aunt set the table for dinner," He instructed her.
"Now my boys," He took both Javier and Rafael into his arms and carried them into the kitchen behind Gabby.
Javier reached his hands up to Matt's face and gently tapped it causing his father to look at him. He smiled as that was what he had wanted and so he babbled happily.
Rafael didn't bother with what his brother was doing; he was perfectly happy shaking his new favourite toy around and smiling.
"I think their personalities are starting to show," Matt commented on what he saw.
"Yeah I think so too," Gabby, agreed, "Lately all Rafael's wanted is attention and Javier is quiet and barely makes a sound."
"Accept when he cries," Violet added.
"Yes accept when he cries." Matt said.
"Babe should we try sitting them in their highchairs again?"
"Yeah sure," Matt carried them over to the two high chairs set up at the table and put them in the chairs. Now that they were sitting on their own they could sit and get used to the idea of solid food even though they wouldn't be eating it for quite some time.
"I'm thinking maybe giving some baby food in a couple weeks. They have a check-up next week so I'll ask the doctor," Gabby mentioned.
"It's on Thursday right?"
"Yeah."
"Good. I have it off."
"I know," Gabby walked towards him and kissed him wrapping her arms around his waist.
"Ewe!" Violet covered her eyes, "That's gross!"
Matt shook his head, "It's just kissing Violet."
"Yeah and kissing is gross! I don't know why Eva loves it so much." She added.
"Eva what?" Matt turned his head around so fast he almost got whiplash.
"She wants to kiss a boy," Violet informed him innocently.
"Uh sweetheart how do you know all this?" Gabby was curious.
"She was talking to her friends in the pool, I was listening. When I'm a teenager I'm going to be just like Eva."
Gabby was glad that Violet seemed to look up to Eva, "Well Eva is a good kid,"
"No! Auntie Gabby she's cool and popular! And she's going into high school."
"Yeah I know."
"She wear's make-up and likes boys too."
"Yeah I'm sure Antonio doesn't like that," Matt commented.
"Matt" Gabby warned and felt lucky as the buzzer went off.
