Chapter 36:
Seeing the Light
Zack smiled as he walked through the hallway of McKinley High School the next day with Charlotte right next to him grasping his hand. After all the months he'd spent lusting over Charlotte and hoping to someday become her boyfriend, he had now finally, more or less, fulfilled that dream. Admittedly, they weren't truly a real couple officially, but Zack still felt happy, for he knew that what he'd currently set up between himself and Charlotte was still a good start nonetheless.
"Besides," Zack thought to himself. "As long as Daniel gets Diana out of all this, I'm perfectly happy." As he had that thought, he saw Daniel at his locker getting his supplies. Zack smiled, for he knew that even though classes didn't start for another 30 minutes or so, Daniel was still making sure that he was prepared. Zack smiled as he thought about the big surprise that he now had for Daniel. "Let the games begin," he thought to himself.
Zack tapped Charlotte on the shoulder. She turned her head just in time to see Zack point in Daniel's direction. Charlotte smiled capriciously as she saw Daniel at his locker, completely oblivious to how she was in the hallway alongside one of his best friends.
Charlotte turned her head to face Zack, and then said, "Ready to show Daniel our little secret?"
Zack nodded, and replied, "Sure am." He then turned his head and called out, "Hey there dude! What's up?"
"Things are going well dude," Daniel replied as he turned his head. He turned his head back to his locker afterward, only to abruptly pause. "Wait a minute," he thought to himself, and he quickly turned his head back to look at Zack again with a confused expression on his face that quickly turned to shock when he saw who Zack was standing right next to.
Charlotte grinned maliciously when she saw the surprised look on Daniel's face. She then gave a sarcastic, yet flirtatious, wave before turning away from Daniel and walking down the hall. Zack followed close behind her.
Right as the two players were about to head down an adjacent side hallway, Zack said, "Hey Charlotte, could you go on ahead without me for a little bit? I'd like to go get my stuff out of my locker."
Charlotte raised her eyebrows and said, "A little early don't you think?"
"Well you did see how Daniel was already getting his stuff out, and it never hurts to get prepared early."
Charlotte smiled, and replied, "Ok then. You can go right ahead. I'll be waiting down that hall."
Zack smiled, and Charlotte smiled back before she turned and walked down the adjacent hallway.
Still smiling, Zack turned and walked right back to Daniel, who was still gaping in shock at his best friend.
Zack stopped directly in front of his friend and said, "So, what do you think of my idea now?"
Daniel blinked, shook his head side to side, and eventually replied, "All these years we've been best friends; I should have guessed that the guy you were referring to yesterday was yourself."
Zack chuckled, and responded, "You should have seen the look on your face when you saw me standing hand in hand with Charlotte."
"I can't believe you," said Daniel. "Why didn't you tell me that you were the one who actually had . . . romantic feelings . . . for Charlotte of all people?"
Zack grinned, chuckling inwardly as he noticed how Daniel had said 'romantic feelings' as if it were the worst swear word in the world, and responded, "Charlotte thinks that I'm in this 'relationship' with her to make you jealous. Seeing you all shocked like you were when you saw us together was the perfect way to convince her that the plan was working. If you'd known about the full details of my real plan, you wouldn't have been so surprised to see us together, and thus, Charlotte would have seen right through my plan."
Daniel shook his head. "You are one devious dude."
"Thank you, I'll take that as a compliment," said Zack.
Daniel spread his hands out and said, "Whatever dude. As long as something good comes out of all this, I'll be perfectly happy."
"Thank you," said Zack. "On that note, with Charlotte out of the way . . . now's your chance to get things settled with Diana."
Daniel smiled, winked, and responded, "You're right. Now is my chance. Thank you."
"You're welcome," said Zack. He turned his head back towards the hallway Charlotte had walked into, and then said to Daniel, "I'd better go, Charlotte might get suspicious over why I'm taking so long. Good luck."
"You go on ahead; thanks," said Daniel.
Zack smiled, and hurried back down the direction Charlotte had gone. Daniel smiled briefly, but the smile then faded as he realized once again how he was really going to have to seriously get his game on in order to muster up the courage to finally reveal to Diana how he felt about her. "What can I do?" he thought to himself.
Then he had an idea. "I know just the person to ask for advice," he thought to himself as he closed his locker, zipped up his backpack, and hurried over in the direction of the choir room.
. . . . .
Finn smirked, and shook his head from side to side as he gazed at Puck. Puck was sitting on a chair two feet or so away from Finn and was angrily glaring at something of interest he'd appeared to have noticed nearby the piano; with a black eye.
"Boy you look pretty beat up," said Finn. "What happened to you dude?"
Puck snorted, and curtly responded, "It's nothing; I tripped coming up the stairs."
"Did this happen before, or after your fight with Joe?"
Puck glared angrily at Finn, who just happened to also be looking out of the corner of his eye towards Quinn and Joe, who were sitting together. Quinn was closely examining Joe's face, for her boyfriend had a black eye as well. In fact, the black eye was the only injury that Joe appeared to have. The same could not be said, however, for Puck. Puck had both a black eye and also numerous bruises all over various areas of his body.
"I should have guessed that they would all know the truth," Puck thought to himself as he once again turned his head to face the piano once more.
Finn smirked, and shook his head from side to side again. "I should have guessed that things would eventually get physical between Puck and Joe," he thought to himself. The other glee club members also noticed this, and looked each other in the eyes. They'd all had a feeling that tensions between Puck and Joe over Quinn would eventually reach the point where they ended up fighting each other. At least now it had finally occurred and had been gotten over with. Hopefully, things could now calm down before things between the two men got any worse.
Quinn meanwhile, smiled adoringly as she whispered to Joe, "You were really brave standing up against Puck the way you did last night."
"Thanks," Joe said with a smile of his own. "I am happy to have defended your honor."
Quinn smiled back upon hearing this, and promptly ran her fingers through Joe's dreadlocks, much to Puck's chagrin.
Rachel smiled as she watched Quinn and Joe. Her smile widened as she thought of an incident in her own past that was very similar to what Joe had done. She turned her head to Finn, tapped him on the shoulder, and said when he looked at her, "Sound familiar?"
Finn smiled when he heard Rachel say this, for what had just unfolded between Joe and Puck over Quinn indeed did remind him very much of the very similar incident that had taken place between himself and Brody over Rachel. "History seems to enjoy repeating itself," Finn thought to himself.
Meanwhile, Artie and Rory looked meaningfully into each other's eyes. Then they looked at Sugar before grinning sheepishly as they realized how very happy they were that they hadn't ever gone so far as to beat each other up over her the way Puck and Joe had just done the previous night over Quinn.
At that moment, all sixteen of the New Directions alumni suddenly heard the door to the choir room open up, and they looked towards the door just in time to see Daniel enter the room.
Upon sight of the sixteen alumni, Daniel made a guilty grimace, and said, "Er, sorry, I hope I didn't interrupt anything."
"It's ok," said Finn. He smiled, and then said, "Was there something you wanted to talk to us about?"
Daniel looked meaningfully around the choir room, then back at Finn. "Do you mind if I talk to you about something?"
"Of course not. I'm all ears," said Finn.
Daniel looked at the other New Directions alumni. "I was hoping that I could talk with you in private?" said Daniel.
Finn made a silent 'oh' of understanding. "Say no more," said Finn as he got up from his seat. He turned his head to Rachel and said, "I'll be back in a little bit; I just need to see what Daniel here wants to talk to me about."
"You go on ahead," said Rachel.
Finn smiled, turned away, and then left the choir room with Daniel.
After spending a few minutes walking down the hallways, Daniel and Finn eventually made it to a hallway that was empty of people apart from themselves.
Having reached an appropriate location, Daniel turned around to face Finn.
Finn smiled, and said, "So what was it you wanted to talk to me about?"
Daniel smiled back, and responded, "Well before I get started on that, I'd like to first say again how you're my biggest personal idol."
Finn's smile widened, and he said, "Well it's certainly good to know that there are students here who admire me."
"Oh I don't just admire you," said Daniel. "I want to be you."
"Even better," said Finn.
Daniel chuckled, and then stated, "To be honest, I'm such a big fan of yours that, whenever I find myself in a difficult situation, I always think to myself: What would Finn Hudson do?"
"Well I can say that it's pretty flattering to know that," said Finn.
"Like I said," said Daniel. "I want to be just like you when I grow up." Immediately after saying that, Daniel made a sheepish face, and then stated as an afterthought, "though hopefully a much better dancer."
Finn shrugged. "I can definitely agree with you there," said Finn. "My dancing skills are definitely not what most people would call God-given talent or even talent at all."
Daniel chuckled nervously, and then stated, "I don't think I'll comment on that."
Finn chuckled in agreement.
Daniel smiled, took a deep breath, and then said, "Well anyway, there is something that I was hoping to ask you advice about."
"Name it, and I'll see what I can do," said Finn.
Daniel took a deep breath. "Well, I presume that you're aware of how I'm very good friends with Diana right?"
Finn smiled, and nodded his head. Already he had a feeling where Daniel was going with this.
Sure enough, as Finn was expecting, Daniel then said, "Well I've known her since we were both in 1st grade, and now, I've reached the point where I'm pretty sure I might actually be in love with her."
Finn's smile widened. He had guessed correctly what Daniel was going to talk to him about. "I definitely have to say that I'm happy to hear that," said Finn. "I've seen the adorable chemistry between you two, and I don't think there's anyone who could be a more perfect match for you; particularly since the two of you together remind me and Rachel so much of ourselves."
Daniel blushed, and hung his head in embarrassment, yet also felt himself feeling very flattered to have been described in this way by his own greatest idol.
Finn chuckled, and then said, "But I'm guessing that your situation regarding her is a bit more complicated then you've currently let on in your explanation."
"Correct you are," said Daniel.
Upon hearing this, Finn gestured for Daniel to continue.
"Well," said Daniel. "The thing is, I'm not sure if she feels the same way about me, and I'm not sure if I want to risk sabotaging my friendship with her by telling her about my feelings for her. Also, ever since I first became a student here at McKinley, Charlotte has constantly been going after me and attempting to sink her hooks into me. I've practically reached my wits end over Charlotte, and in fact ended up going full on Godzilla in the hallway yesterday because of it. The only reason she isn't trying to make another hare-brained attempt at charming me into becoming her boyfriend right this very minute is because Zack tricked her into 'dating' him to give me more time to make myself unavailable for her."
Finn smiled when he heard this, for he believed that it was always good when a person's best friend went to great lengths to help the person in question.
Daniel continued, "Anyway, what I'm now getting at is that even though Zack has now provided me with at least today's worth of extra time, I'm still not sure if I can go through with telling Diana how I feel about her. I've already tried to do exactly that so many times in both direct ways and indirect ways. I just don't know if I'll be able to do this, and I was hoping you could give me an idea that I might not have thought of yet."
Finn smiled, put his hand on Daniel's shoulder, and then said, "Well in that regard, what would I do?"
"Huh?" Daniel asked in confusion.
Finn chuckled, and elaborated, "Well you did say that whenever you find yourself in a difficult situation, you think to yourself: 'What would Finn Hudson do?' Therefore, since you are now in a difficult situation, and I'm Finn Hudson, ask yourself: What would I do?"
Daniel made a silent 'oh,' sheepishly grinned, and then said, "I should have guessed that you'd say that."
Finn chuckled and patted Daniel on the head. "Well? Any ideas?"
Daniel thought carefully to himself, and replied, "Well from what I know about you, you would probably either A: just go ahead and tell Diana the message in words . . ."
Daniel looked meaningfully at Finn out of the corner of his eye, and Finn grinned.
Taking the hint, Daniel continued, "Or B: you would tell it to her in song."
Finn gave Daniel a 'thumps-up.' "That certainly sounds like something I would do," said Finn with a smile. Daniel smiled happily at hearing this. He had interpreted his idol perfectly. Then Finn said, "And I know just the song for you to use."
"Wait what?" Daniel asked incredulously.
"You heard me," said Finn. "You're going to tell Diana exactly how you feel about her in song, today; and I know the perfect song for you to use."
"Today?" Daniel asked in shock. "I mean, don't you think it's a little abrupt for me to do this after just coming up with that idea?"
"No time like the present," said Finn. "Besides, just like you said, Zack's bought you at least all of today for you to attempt to finally get things settled between you and Diana. You wouldn't want to still not have told Diana about your feelings before time runs out."
Daniel gulped, hung his head, and then said, "Well I guess that's true." He raised his head, and stated, "But this is a pretty big risk you're asking of me. Are you sure there isn't a safer way to do this?"
Finn put his hand on Daniel's shoulder, looked the younger boy in the eyes, and calmly replied, "No one becomes a star by playing it safe."
Daniel gulped, thought to himself, and then slowly nodded his head. "I guess you're right," said Daniel. "I guess I better do this then."
"Don't you worry," said Finn. "Trust me, all you have to do is believe in yourself, and you wouldn't believe how far you can go."
"That's certainly true," said Daniel, his happiness and confidence returning. "On that note, what was the song you said would be perfect for me to use?"
Finn smiled, looked behind him to check to make sure that he and Daniel were still alone in the hallway, and then turned back to face Daniel. "Have you ever heard of the movie, 10 Things I Hate About You?"
. . . . .
Will Schuester smiled as he watched the clock, waiting for the bell to ring so that he could begin the recess session of glee club that day. The New Directions members, both among the alumni and among the current members, were likewise eagerly waiting for the bell to ring and officially begin the recess session of glee club as they sat expectantly in their seats in the choir room. Even Charlotte had arrived at the same time as Zack. Of course, that was easy enough since they were now, by a relatively loose definition, a 'couple.'
When the bell finally rang, Mr. Schuester clapped his hands. "Alright everyone, who's up first to perform today?!"
Calvin raised his hand.
"Come on up Calvin," said Mr. Schuester.
Calvin stood up from his seat, drew a folded slip of paper from his pants pocket, and then said, "I would like to perform, but first I'd like to show you an idea for a mash-up that I thought would be a good way to open up our performance at Regionals."
Charlotte scoffed. "Oh please, why would we even consider using ideas thought up by retards?"
"Ignoring you," said Calvin without even looking at Charlotte. Charlotte gaped incredulously at Calvin upon hearing this.
Susan smirked at Charlotte. "Serves her right," the dark haired girl thought to herself.
"Let's hear it," said Mr. Schuester.
In stark contrast to this, Calvin walked over to where Mr. Schuester was and handed the slip of paper to the teacher.
"Ok then, I'll read it," Mr. Schuester amended. He unfolded the paper, smiled at what he saw written on it, and then said, "Hmm, I can certainly see how this could be a good crowd pleaser for our opening number. You certainly know how to come up with some Class A mash-ups."
"Thanks," said Calvin with a smile.
"What's the mash-up idea dude?" Cody eagerly asked.
Calvin turned his head to face his peers in the New Directions, a proud smile on his face, and responded, "Justin Bieber's Love Me and One Direction's C'mon, C'mon."
The other gleeks whistled in admiration upon hearing this. Even Charlotte found herself unable to fight a smile of approval coming onto her face. "Not bad for a wild animal," she thought to herself, her blue eyes taking on a look of approval.
Calvin, still smiling, clapped his hands together. "Alright everyone," said Calvin. "I have a feeling that you don't even need to ask who I'm dedicating my performance today to, am I right?"
The other gleeks grinned, and nodded in the affirmative.
"That's good," said Calvin. "Because the person I'm dedicating my performance to is someone that I've always considered one of the greatest friends I could have ever asked for since the day I first met her."
Calvin looked straight at Susan. "Ever since we first met," Calvin continued, "she has always been there for me when no one else could. No matter what the situation, she has always been on my side, standing up for me, supporting me, and most of all believing in me."
Susan smiled, and placed her hands on her heart when she heard this.
Smiling at the sight of this, Calvin continued, "Our friendship has only continued to grow ever since. The only ones I know who even come close to being as good of a friend of mine compared to her are Hobbes, my family, and everyone in this room . . . minus Charlotte." The other gleeks nodded and mumbled in agreement while Charlotte rolled her eyes dismissively.
"But when all the others either were unable to be there, or just didn't want to be there, that one special friend that I'm dedicating my performance to would be there to provide me with a rock to lean on, an anchor to ground myself on, a shoulder to cry on, but most of all a friend, a real friend, an ally worth more than can be imagined. Now, we've both reached the point where there's no one apart from each other that we'd rather spend the rest of our lives with, and no one's more delighted, or more proud, then I am."
Calvin then turned his head to the band members, and winked at them. The band members promptly got their instruments ready. Smiling, Calvin turned his head back to the audience. "This song is for that special friend," Calvin stated before snapping his fingers.
The band members immediately started playing the song that Calvin had said he'd be performing. The audience smiled when they recognized the tune. Calvin smiled as well upon seeing the approval from the audience, and when the time was right, he sang:
If the heart is always searching,
Can you ever find a home?
I've been looking for that someone,
I'll never make it on my own
Dreams can't take the place of loving you,
There's gotta be a million reasons why it's true.
When you look me in the eyes,
And tell me that you love me.
Everything's alright,
When you're right here by my side.
When you look me in the eyes,
I catch a glimpse of heaven.
I find my paradise,
When you look me in the eyes.
How long will I be waiting
To be with you again?
Gonna tell you that I love you,
In the best way that I can.
I can't take a day without you here,
You're the light that makes my darkness disappear.
When you look me in the eyes,
And tell me that you love me.
Everything's alright,
When you're right here by my side.
When you look me in the eyes,
I catch a glimpse of heaven.
I find my paradise,
When you look me in the eyes.
More and more I start to realize,
I can reach my tomorrow,
I can hold my head up high,
And it's all because you're by my side.
When you look me in the eyes,
And tell me that you love me.
Everything's alright,
When you're right here by my side.
When I hold you in my arms,
I know that it's forever.
I just gotta let you know,
I never wanna let you go.
When you look me in the eyes.
And tell me that you love me.
Everything's alright,
When you're right here by my side.
When you look me in the eyes,
I catch a glimpse of heaven.
I find my paradise,
When you look me in the eyes.
Oh
Directly after Calvin finished his performance, the silence that followed lasted for all of three seconds before all the audience members, minus Charlotte, let out a joyous applause. Even Hobbes let out a rapid fire cacophony of joyous barking. Calvin smiled, and bowed to the audience.
When Calvin straightened back up from his bow, the audience promptly quieted down, for they all had an idea of what he was about to do.
Sure enough, Calvin took a deep breath, and then let loose a very realistic, lion-like, "ROAR!"
"AROO!" went Hobbes.
The audience promptly started applauding once again, and this time even louder. Even so, the loudest applause, in Calvin's point of view, came from Susan.
When the audience stopped applauding, Sam was quick to say, "Is Calvin a beast, or is he a BEAST?!"
The other gleeks laughed and smiled in agreement. Even Calvin smiled happily at his idol among the New Directions alumni.
Calvin then lifted his hand in an unmistakable signal to quiet down. The audience promptly obeyed the signal.
Calvin looked directly at Susan, and said, "In case there were any doubts, that performance I just did was indeed dedicated to you."
Susan smiled warmly, happy to hear this confirmation of what she'd guessed.
Calvin then said, "Like I said, you've always been there for me. Sure, I've always had my parents, and I've had Hobbes, but you're the one who's always been there for me when even they couldn't be there. And if you hadn't been there when Hobbes and my parents weren't there for me, I'm not sure if I would ever have been able to make it as far as I've gotten. I'll admit, people treated me perfectly fairly for the most part, but sometimes the difficulties that came with being autistic sometimes made me just wish that I was either neurotypical at the very least, or had just never even been born at the very worst. If you, Hobbes, my parents, but especially you, hadn't been there for me all the time, and especially those times in particular, I would never have had the strength to continue on. Knowing this, I couldn't be more honored, or more proud, to call you my friend; or feel any luckier then I already feel for fate to have chosen us to be together as boyfriend and girlfriend. For all that, I thank you."
Susan sniffed, nearly in tears from the beautiful speech that Calvin had just made in her honor. Mr. Schuester and the other gleeks, likewise, looked on in stunned admiration. Even Charlotte couldn't help but gape in surprise and respect at hearing what Calvin had just said.
"Well said," Sam stated in awe.
At this point, Susan abruptly got up from her chair, rushed right over to Calvin, and gave him a tender loving hug. Calvin smiled, and returned the gesture. The other gleeks smiled warmly at the couple as they engaged in their passionate embrace. Even Hobbes gave what any human would have sworn to be the canine equivalent of a smile as he watched his master and the girl that appeared to be his master's future mate hugging each other.
Susan sniffed as she continued to hug Calvin, and eventually said, "Thank you so much Calvin. I . . . I am honored to call you my friend, I am truly blessed and proud to call you my boyfriend, and I hope and pray more than anything that we will spend the rest of our lives together. Thank you."
Calvin smiled warmly, ran his fingers through Susan's ebony colored hair, and responded, "You're welcome. It has truly been a pleasure to be friends with someone as caring, as friendly, but most of all as just plain wonderful as you."
Susan smiled warmly, her blue eyes dazzling with happiness and love. "I love you," she then said.
"I love you to," said Calvin. "And there is no one I can think who would, or even could, ever be more worthy of my love, then you."
At the sound of all this, Mr. Schuester, the New Directions alumni, and all the current New Directions members apart from Charlotte smiled warmly, placed their hands on their hearts, and bowed their heads in respect.
Little did they all know that standing right by the door to the choir room, looking right through the small window on it, was Miles Surette. He had been walking right by the choir room on the way to take care of an errand that Charlotte had assigned him to do as part of a backup plan in case her current game with Zack failed when he had overheard Calvin giving his description for who he'd be dedicating his performance too. Intrigued, Miles had stopped by the door and had proceeded to listen to the performance, the applause, but most importantly, the beautiful speech that Calvin had made in Susan's honor as well as the tender words of love that Calvin and Susan had just exchanged between each other. He had also seen these very actions as they occurred.
Upon witnessing and overhearing all this, Miles gulped, and hung his head in shame. "They truly do love each other," he whispered to himself. As he said this, his heart sank even further in shame as he thought of how he'd spent the last two and a half years lusting over Susan and jealously resenting any time she spent with Calvin. Now, he realized just how deep the friendship between Calvin and Susan truly was, and just how truly, deeply, and purely they loved each other. "There's no way I could ever be like that for her," he thought to himself guiltily. Then he thought again about how he'd been acting lately in regard to Susan, and to most of the other students at McKinley in general. "By God," he thought to himself in horror. "I am turning into a male Charlotte."
As Miles was thinking about all this outside the choir room, Susan and Calvin eventually undid their embrace, both smiling. Susan then turned her head to Mr. Schuester and said, "I'd like to perform right now."
"Go on ahead Susan," said Mr. Schuester.
Calvin smiled, and politely returned to his seat.
Susan smiled, turned to face the audience, and said, "I guess there's no need for anyone to ask who I'm dedicating my performance to."
The other gleeks smiled, and nodded in the affirmative. After what they'd seen unfold between Susan and Calvin just now, they all knew perfectly well that Susan was dedicating her performance to Calvin.
Susan grinned, turned her head to face the band members, and winked. The band members immediately began to prepare their instruments for the song that Susan had informed them she would be performing this week. When the band members signaled that they were ready, Susan turned her head to face the audience again, and said to Calvin, "This is for you. This song describes exactly how deep, true, pure, and real my love for you is, and I hope you enjoy this."
Calvin smiled, Hobbes panted happily, and the other gleeks grinned.
Susan then said out of the corner of her mouth to the band members, "Shall we?"
In reply, the band members began playing the tune for the song Susan had chosen. As this happened, Susan hummed and sang appropriately. The resulting performance went like this:
Ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh
Can you feel me
When I think about you?
With every breath I take
Every minute
No matter what I do
My world is an empty place
Like I've been wandering the desert
For a thousand days (oh)
Don't know if it's a mirage
But I always see your face, baby
I'm missing you so much
Can't help it, I'm in love
A day without you is like a year without rain
I need you by my side
Don't know how I'll survive
A day without you is like a year without rain (oh whoa)
Whoa, oh, whoa
The stars are burning
I hear your voice in my mind
Can't you hear me calling?
My heart is yearning
Like the ocean that's running dry
Catch me, I'm falling
It's like the ground is crumbling underneath my feet
Won't you save me?
There's gonna be a monsoon when you get back to me, oh, baby
I'm missing you so much
Can't help it, I'm in love
A day without you is like a year without rain
I need you by my side
Don't know how I'll survive
A day without you is like a year without rain (oh whoa)
Whoa, oh, whoa
So let this drought come to an end
And make this desert flower again
I need you here, I can't explain
But a day without you is like a year without rain (oh whoa)
I'm missing you so much
Can't help it, I'm in love
A day without you is like a year without rain
I need you by my side
Don't know how I'll survive
A day without you is like a year without rain (oh whoa)
Whoa, oh, whoa
Ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh
The moment Susan finished her performance, the audience applauded exultantly.
"Now that is how you SING!" shouted Mercedes in approval.
"Three cheers for Susan!" yelled Calvin. Everyone in the audience apart from Charlotte promptly complied. Even Hobbes barked thrice in succession with each successive set of three cheers. Susan chuckled at the sight of all this.
Meanwhile, outside the choir room, Miles smiled. He had to admit that Susan did have a wonderful singing voice. In fact, he now thought it sounded even more wonderful now that he truly understood just how much she loved, and likely always would love, her very good friend Calvin. "Maybe it's time I cleaned up my act a little," he thought to himself.
At that moment, Miles heard John say, "What are you doing here dude? Aren't you supposed to be taking care of that errand Charlotte asked you to do?"
Miles turned his head to face John, a wolfish smile on his face, and replied, "Not anymore. I have a better idea over how to spend my time, and more importantly, a better idea of a girl for me to date, not to mention for you as well."
. . . . .
Charlotte smiled maliciously as she walked out into the school parking lot a couple of hours later. The after school session of glee club was going to occur in 45 minutes, and now was the time to make sure that her backup plan was working smoothly. She grinned as she thought of this particular plan she'd come up with.
"With Daniel in it for me and Susan in it for Miles, there's no way this plan can't succeed," she thought to herself.
Unfortunately, soon after she thought about this, she reached the area where her own car was parked, and gaped in shock at what she saw. Contrary to what she'd been expecting, Miles had not gone through with what she'd asked him to do. "What the devil?" she thought to herself.
She then heard Miles's voice a couple of feet behind her. She turned around and saw none other than Miles and John talking to two of her fellow cheerios. It only took a few seconds for Charlotte to recognize the two subordinate cheerleaders as Brooke Manning and Mary Tyler. Brooke, a ginger haired girl with brown eyes and freckled fair skin seemed absolutely ecstatic as she conversed animatedly with what appeared to be an equally happy Miles. Mary, a blond girl with hazel eyes, meanwhile, was engaged in a calmer and easier going conversation with John, who she could almost swear had an amused look on his face.
Stunned, Charlotte started walking towards the two pairs of conversing jocks and cheerleaders. When she was a few steps away, she heard Brooke say, "What got you to change like this Miles? I mean, I am glad that you're no longer acting like an asshole like you have for the last few years since freshman year anymore, but I wasn't expecting you to change so quickly after how you ranted two days ago about how unfair it was that Susan was dating Calvin instead of you."
Miles smiled, nodded his head in understanding, and replied, "I get it, I am definitely turning over a new leaf a little more abruptly then you expected considering the way I've been acting lately. But the truth is, a few hours ago, I saw the light, and realized the error of my ways, and I realized that my status and reputation wasn't worth defacing our friendship the way I've been doing. Ever since freshman year at this school, I've been treating you like garbage, and I shouldn't have done that. But now I've realized how I was wrong to behave the way I was behaving, and I've also now realized that in the end, I'm much better off dating a cheerleader at the bottom of the pyramid who's been my friend since childhood then wasting my time lusting over a more popular, albeit non-cheerio, girl who will never love me."
Brooke smiled, and ran her fingers through Miles's sandy blonde hair. The linebacker and subordinate cheerleader looked as if they were about to say more when Charlotte shouted, "Miles Surette! Get over here now!"
Upon hearing this, Miles, John, Brooke, and Mary turned their heads in surprise. While John and the two cheerleaders maintained their surprised expressions upon catching sight of Charlotte, Miles rolled his eyes and groaned when he saw that he'd just been called over by Charlotte. With an irritated look on his face, he said to Brooke, "Please excuse me, I'll be right back."
Miles promptly walked over to Charlotte, glaring in annoyance at the head cheerio.
"What do you want?!" He asked indignantly.
Charlotte pointed meaningfully at where her car was, and replied, "Hello! Do you not recall what I specifically asked you to do earlier today? If so, then why is my car still exactly as clean as I left it?!"
"I've changed my mind," said Miles. "I'm not going to go through with your bull crap anymore!"
"Are you insane?!" Charlotte asked incredulously. "Have you forgotten how my getting with Daniel and your getting with Susan depend heavily on this?"
Miles scoffed, and responded, "And that interests me why?"
"Perhaps you didn't hear me?" Charlotte retorted acerbically. "If we don't make a decisive move, then sooner or later, Daniel will end up with a different girl, Susan and Calvin will be impossible to break up, and thus both of our objects of affection will be out of our reach!"
"So they'll be out of reach," Miles parroted. "What should I care?"
Charlotte gaped at Miles, stunned by what she was hearing him say. This was the exact opposite of what he'd been saying about his situation involving Susan and Calvin for the last few years. "What the Hell happened to you? Susan would be a million times better off having you as her boyfriend rather than that freak of nature! You said so yourself!"
"Well that was before I realized how much they actually loved each other!" Miles howled back indignantly. "Honestly, you were in the choir room with them when they said it today! Hell, they dedicated performances to each other today! Did you not hear them?"
"You were there?" Charlotte asked in shock.
"Damn right I was! I was right by the door! In fact, I had been on my way to screw up your car before I walked by the choir room in time to hear Calvin talking about who he'd be dedicating his love song performance to, and I was intrigued enough to stay right there to see and hear all that unfolded immediately afterward.
"Susan loves Calvin, and Calvin loves her, end of story. A baby would be able to understand the depth and truth of their love from hearing the emotion in what they said. If I were to separate them, it would kill them, and I refuse to stoop that low! I've seen the light, and I've realized that if I don't clean up my act soon, I'm going to freaking turn into a male version of you!"
Miles stomped his foot on the ground with a sense of finality. "I won't dig myself any deeper then I already have! Not anymore! I am going to return to the path of light, date a girl who actually loves me, and stop being a monster! I don't care what inane delusions you've been feeding yourself about you and Daniel together, but I'm not going to help you turn them into reality! And I won't ruin the deep friendship between Calvin and Susan the way I did the one between me and Brooke during freshman year! I've moved on, and it's high time you did the same!"
With an angry snort, Miles turned away from Charlotte and stormed out of the parking lot, growling inarticulately with rage. Brooke, Mary, and John stood where they were for a few minutes, gaping in surprise at Miles's behavior. Eventually, they turned their heads to face Charlotte, their eyebrows raised. Then they looked each other in the eyes with a silent agreement passing between them. Seconds later, the two cheerleaders and the football player left the parking lot in the same direction that Miles had just stormed off in. Charlotte, meanwhile, stood where she was, stunned as to what had just unfolded. "Dagnabbit," she thought to herself. "Now what will I do!?"
And there you have it everybody! :) I hope you enjoyed this chapter, and that you leave lots of reviews (and please post some more votes on my poll). On another note, I hope you all enjoyed the songs in this chapter, the scene between Finn and Daniel, and the redeeming scene for Miles. Like I said, I hope you enjoy this chapter and continue to look forward for the next update (which will definitely be guaranteed to come as long as you keep reviewing and posting votes on my poll).
Coming up next: Charlotte improvises on her currently foiled plot that Miles bailed on, only to still end up failing anyway. And later on, Daniel takes Finn's advice and makes a daring move in his efforts to finally tell Diana about his feelings for her.
