Bella huffed and fidgeted in the back of Edward's car. She was annoyed. She hated it when other people told her what to do.
"You should have expected this," Edward smirked glancing at the rear view mirror.
"I can't quit my job. I can't do that to my boss! I've worked there for five years."
"So you're going to work there for the rest of your life?"
"Maybe..."
"Well if you get pregnant, you would need to be monitored at all times."
"I understand that no one knows what will happen in a half human-half vampire pregnancy, but I can't not work."
"Hey don't be angry at me. I'm not the one who suggested it."
"Like you hate the idea," she scoffed.
"Carlisle is a doctor, remember? He was giving his professional opinion."
"Opinion schminion."
"How old are you?" Edward laughed.
"Can you talk to him? Please?"
"We'll see..."
"That's a never."
"Maybe if you were nicer to me..."
"I'm always nice."
"Is always the right word?" he joked, parking in his usual spot in front of Bella's apartment.
"Ha. Ha."
"Bella..." Edward stopped and looked up at Bella's window. "Do you know why there would be a crying girl in your apartment?"
"Uh no," she frowned, hurrying inside her building. "Who is it?"
"I'm not sure. She thinks her life is over. And something about a Ben."
"Angela?" Bella called as she opened her door. She found her friend curled up on the sofa with her face buried in a pillow. "Angela, are you okay? What's wrong?"
"I'm sorry," she sputtered, wiping her mouth. "For just showing up here."
"Of course, it's no problem," Bella shook her head. She turned back to look at Edward but he was suddenly gone. "Are you hurt? What's happening?"
"I think... I might... be pregnant," Angela whispered with a sob.
"Oh..."
"I don't know what to do. I don't know... how to tell Ben... my parents. I'm not sure how I even got here."
Bella nodded, not sure if she meant literally or figuratively.
"There's all this stuff I haven't done yet with my life. I wanted to travel - go to Africa. I wanted be young and single and make mistakes - harmless mistakes not like this! My life is over - my parents are going to kill me - everyone in Forks will know – my dad will be so embarrassed."
"Angela, have you taken a test? Have you been to a doctor?"
"My period's really late. I took a test in your bathroom. I haven't looked at it yet. I'm kinda paralyzed with fear right now, but I just know it's positive."
"I'm so sorry Angela, but I know everything will be okay. I like to think everything happens for a reason. We'll work this out, okay?" Bella smiled giving her a hand a squeeze. "I'll be here for you no matter what."
"Okay..."
"Hey where did you go?" Bella asked as soon as Edward let himself into her apartment. "Why did you disappear?"
"To make things uncomplicated. I also got a pregnancy test, but I see that was unnecessary," he said looking over at Angela sleeping in Bella's bed.
"Her period started an hour ago. I guess it was stress. She's been trying to find a job and her relationship with Ben is kinda rocky."
"How do you know each other?"
"She's from Forks. One of my good friends from high school. I haven't seen her since... I met all of you."
"She's staying the night," he noticed that Bella had given her some sleep clothes.
"She was exhausted."
"I understand. You did the right thing."
"You..." Bella stopped short.
"What?" Edward took a step closer, needing to know what she was thinking.
"You didn't... do this, did you?"
Do this? Do what? He frowned not understanding.
"Set this all up, I mean," she waved at Angela.
"You're serious," Edward scoffed, stepping backward. He didn't know if he should laugh or be offended.
"I mean it's kind of a strange coincidence..."
"You think I somehow delayed her menstruation cycle?"
"Okay, it seems ridiculous now," she blushed.
"No, how do you think I did it? You must have some theories."
"Well… you could have implanted the idea of pregnancy in her head somehow - poked holes in all of Ben's condoms - drugged her with something to skip her period..." Bella stopped, feeling foolish as she spoke.
"I think you have me confused with some other vampires," he referred to Rosalie and Emmett. Even Alice was more scheming than he was. "I'm going out, but I'll be close if you need me."
"Edward," she called as he closed the door behind him. She felt confused as she saw the hurt look on his face. She had offended him. It was rather silly... Edward was trying to keep her from becoming pregnant. He wouldn't have made Angela an example to scare her off.
"Bella?" Angela mumbled, waking up. "Were you talking to someone?"
"It must have been the TV. I just turned it off," Bella lied.
"Oh…" she sat up, hugging her knees. "Thank you for everything. This whole thing is kinda embarrassing."
"It's no problem Ange. You shouldn't be embarrassed. You were scared."
"Well all those things I said. If I was pregnant, I know I would love it… a perfect little person that I made. My parents would excited about being grandparents too; you know they are getting kinda old," she joked.
"Might've been in the same class as my brother…"
"Oh Chief Swan is having a boy! That's awesome. Have they picked out a name yet?"
"They haven't told me if they have," she shrugged.
"Do you think she'd wanna name him something tribal?" she asked innocently.
"Um well she named her other kids Leah and Seth so… no, I don't think so."
Lavender, sugary cereal, and the sweet scent of Bella's blood. Edward could smell her apartment as he entered her building. Jasper had been right about building a tolerance to it, but sometimes it could be so overwhelming, he'd hold his breath and open a window. Though he knew she wasn't clear of danger.
Bella had this unnatural ability to attract danger. Her relationship with Jacob Black – Rosalie choosing her from Carlisle's clinic's list of patients – being drugged at a bar – James tracking her scent years ago – the incident with Laurent. He was sure he would be protecting her for the rest of her life.
"What's wrong?" he asked as soon as he entered her apartment. He noticed that Angela had gone, and Bella laid in bed, wide awake in the dark.
"I couldn't sleep," she bit her lip, watching him move closer.
"Bad dream?" he asked, knowing the room was already a comfortable temperature for her.
"No… I can't stop thinking about earlier… I hurt your feelings," she frowned.
"You didn't hurt my feelings," he scoffed.
"I did, and I'm sorry. Angela's basically an innocent bystander. I know you would never do something like that."
"You're an innocent bystander," he shook his head. "At least you should be."
"I can't be sorry for that," Bella sighed. "But again I'm sorry for offending you. It was rude of me."
"Don't worry about it. It didn't bother me."
"But-"
"You're forgiven," he stopped her. "It's okay. So Angela left?"
"She called Ben. He picked her up. She's okay."
"Good," he nodded, leaning against her kitchen counter. "So… did you learn anything from Angela? Did it make you think about something?"
She rolled her eyes at his sneaky smirk. "Don't even..."
AN: Edward honestly didn't have anything to do with Angela - in case some think he did.
I read through some older chapters and I've made a few continuity errors. :/ That's what I get for not having an outline. I apologize if it bothers me - honestly it kills me sometimes when I read other FF.
Also I have to announce that I am officially a Registered Nurse - the main reason for my delay in writing in the last few years. And yes I'm considering changing my name to arbitrarygirl RN... hahaha
Thanks for Reading!
