Regina was whimpering in her sleep. Robin knew she must be in a lot of pain or having a nightmare, but he couldn't help but feel relieved. It was the first sign she'd displayed that showed she was still in that sleeping body.
"Mother! What have you done? No!" she began screaming in her sleep. Robin shook her.
"Regina. Regina, wake up. You're dreaming." He shook again a little harder, but he must have moved her arm because she let out an agonized scream. He jerked his hands away immediately. Her eyes flashed open. They were glassy. She tried to focus. She was breathing too fast. She was panicking. The combination of the dream and the pain was too much. He had to calm her down. He slowly stroked her hair back. "Hey, you're okay. We're back in Storybrooke. You've got a few injuries, but you're okay."
Her eyes met his. She tried to focus on the calm she saw there. The pain shooting through her arm was bad. And her back still felt like it was on fire. She couldn't focus. Where was she? Her eyes were heavy. She wasn't in the stable. It must have been a dream.
"My arm." Regina managed to get out.
"Yes, I believe it's been dislodged." Robin said.
Regina shut her eyes. Just when Robin was starting to think she wouldn't open them again, she did. "Will you fix it?"
"Me? I'm not a doctor." Robin said.
"Pain. Bad." Regina choked out. "I can-"
"Hush. Shut your eyes." Robin hissed. Regina looked confused. "Now!" he said insistently and she did just as the witch flew in with Snow White.
"I brought you another friend. You haven't managed to wake her yet?" Zelena asked.
She waved her arm and Snow was sitting on the opposite side of the tower, tied up. "Don't move, my pretty. I'm not ready for you just yet." Zelena stalked toward Regina. "Oh look, someone hurt her arm." Zelena said kicking Regina's dislocated arm, knocking it further from her body.
Regina let the arm flop with the kick. She held her breath. The pain was intense. She was going to pass out. But she couldn't react or Zelena would know she was awake and she was in no condition to fight.
"What are you doing?" Robin cried.
"Sometimes pain breaks through the need for sleep." Zelena answered. "It was worth a try. No need to worry your pretty little head over it." She turned to Snow. "I'm growing impatient. I believe it's time to speed things up." And with that she disappeared in a cloud of green smoke.
Regina's eyes flew open and were filled with unshed tears. "You have to put it back. I can't…" she trailed off unable to breathe and complete her sentence.
"Regina! You're awake!" Snow said relief flooding her voice.
"Hush! The witch will hear you!" Robin warned. "Her shoulder is dislocated. Do you know how to fix that?" Robin asked.
Regina was vaguely aware of what they were saying, but it was taking all her energy to focus on breathing through the pain.
"You have to pop it back in. It takes a bit of muscle. I don't think I'll be able to do it. But I have watched a lot of "Chicago Hope" and "ER" so I can probably talk you through it." Snow said.
"You've watched what?" Robin asked.
"Doesn't matter. Untie her." Regina managed to get out.
Robin gently lowered Regina to rest on the ground and moved to Snow. He quickly untied her and the pair made it back to Regina.
Snow positioned herself holding Regina's head in her lap. "You need to hold still, Regina. Now Robin you put your foot there in her arm pit and take her arm and you're just going to pull until you hear it pop."
Regina and Robin simultaneously raised their eyebrows.
"Are you sure about this?" Robin asked.
"That's how they did it on "ER"" Snow said.
"It's a television show, Snow." Regina said.
"Do you have a better idea?" Snow asked.
Regina sighed. "Do it."
"Oh, and Regina, it's going to hurt a lot. Try not to scream or the witch will hear you." Snow warned.
"Perfect." Regina said.
"Are you ready?" Robin asked nervously.
Regina nodded. She shut her eyes and tried to brace herself. The intense pain that shot through her body was enough to knock her out, but she clenched her teeth and did not make a sound.
"Regina. Regina."
A voice calling her name pierced through the glaze that was her consciousness.
"It's over. Are you okay?"
She nodded slowly. Her mind registering that the pain was gone.
"Now what?" Snow asked. "We need to get out of here. She wants my baby."
Regina could hear the fear in Snow's voice, but she just didn't care. She was so tired of all the plans and fighting and pain and she wanted to sleep. But she couldn't even find relief in sleep. Cora was there to torment her.
"Regina, do you have it with you?" Robin asked.
"Have what? The book?" Snow asked.
Regina was trying to summon the energy to answer, but she really just wanted to shut her eyes. She sensed magic in the air a second before her sister arrived. She stopped trying to force her eyes to stay open and let them fall shut.
"Oh, Snow White trying to help the Evil Queen. How touching." Zelena said taking note of Snow's position with Regina's head in her lap. "Well, as a reward for your kindness, I've made you something." She held out a potion to Snow. Snow just stared at her. "Oh dear, you seem to think you have a choice whether or not to take it." She waved her hand and Snow's arm shot up and she took the bottle from Zelena and drank it.
Zelena smiled, pleased with herself. "Don't worry dear. It won't hurt the baby…yet. It'll just speed things up a little. Now, I just need the book and we'll be able to get on with this little sacrifice."
"No!" Snow screamed. "You aren't hurting my baby!"
Zelena waved her hand again. "Time to wake up, sister. I don't know how you put up with this constant whining."
Regina felt herself being pulled magically into a sitting position. She felt a tug on her eyes. She might have been able to fight it, but she didn't really think it was worth the effort.
"Ah. That's better. So good of you to grace us with your presence, sis."
"We may have the same mother, but we are not sisters," Regina declared.
"Oh, Regina, denial doesn't change the facts. But really, we don't have time to quibble over trifles. What have you done with my book?" Zelena asked moving closer to Regina who was now sitting up next to Snow.
"The book chose me if you recall." Regina responded.
Fury flared in the witch's eyes. Robin had been inching closer to Regina; she was almost within reach when Zelena flung Regina flying across the room and crashing into the opposite wall.
Regina's eyes fluttered. Zelena flipped her wrist and Regina felt an invisible force holding her eyes open. Couldn't she have a moment's peace?
"I don't think so. You're not escaping back into your sleep. Where is the book?" Zelena advanced on Regina again.
"How can you treat your sister like that?" Snow asked. "Please, you're hurting her."
Zelena magically pulled Regina up by an invisible hand on her throat. Regina struggled to breathe. How many times had Cora done this? Regina couldn't even remember. She didn't fight against it. It only made it worse.
"Are you ready to tell me where the book is?" Zelena asked.
"Leave her be. She doesn't have it." Robin said.
Zelena turned to face him. "What do you mean? Where is it?"
With Zelena's attention diverted, Regina tried to summon her magic to release herself. Was the water bottle with her? She hadn't seen the backpack. If she could summon enough strength she could probably bring it here. But she couldn't breathe. Things were getting fuzzy.
"Let her go and I'll tell you," Robin responded.
"I'm not Rumplestiltskin. I don't make deals." Zelena said.
"Please, Zelena. She can't tell you if she's unconscious again," Snow pleaded.
Zelena turned back to Regina just in time to see her eyes start to roll back. She released Regina who fell unceremoniously to the floor, her legs buckling under her.
"Where is the book, Regina? Don't toy with me."
Regina was coughing and sucking in big gulps of air.
"I'm losing patience, dear. Maybe you'd like me to tell Snow White what happened to her father."
Regina coughed. "She…"
"I already know. And I know what Cora did to my mother." Snow said.
Zelena smiled wickedly. "Does your darling Robin know?" She leaned down so she was in Regina's face. "Does he know you slaughtered a whole village? Captured his friends and their families? Sent innocent children into the blind witch's candy house knowing she'd try to kill them? How many lost their lives on that quest, Regina?"
Regina swallowed hard and refused to look up. "The book is gone." She offered softly. "I destroyed it."
Zelena appeared both shocked and furious. "Impossible! Stop lying to me!" She rounded on Robin and magically lifted him to the window so he was dangling out of it. "Tell me the truth or I drop him."
Regina felt her heart tighten in fear. Her whole body was shaking violently, as she tried to get to her feet. "Please," she begged. "I'm not lying. I destroyed it. I didn't want you to get it, so I destroyed it as soon as I used it to summon the tornado to return us here."
She couldn't let Robin die for her. She shut her eyes and pictured the bottle of water. She felt her magic. It was there. She could do this.
"Regina?" Snow asked her voice heavy with concern. Regina's whole body continued to shake violently. Her eyes were closed; Snow saw something slip into the pocket of Regina's robe. And then Robin Hood was suddenly right behind Regina. Just in time to catch her as she fell back unconscious in his arms.
Zelena whipped around in shock. She didn't think Regina had had the strength to pull that off. But now she was unconscious again. And useless. Could she really have destroyed the book? Zelena didn't even know that was possible. And how did her pathetic little sister expect to defeat her without the book?
Zelena flicked her wrist and Regina, Snow, and Robin were all handcuffed to the wall. Satisfied they were contained, she disappeared in a cloud of green smoke to figure out how she was going to succeed without the book.
"Where would she have taken them?" Emma asked Rumple.
"According to Robin, Regina saw a prophecy where she defeated the witch in the clock tower. With water from Oz." Rumple said.
"So you think she's in the clock tower." Belle asked.
Rumple nodded. "It would make the most sense."
"But she doesn't have the water with her." Henry said.
"How do you know?" David asked.
"Because Belle changed her clothes and her backpack is here." Henry said. "She was only wearing her pajamas and robe. And she was unconscious so she didn't transfer the water there," he explained.
"Then Snow's in trouble." David said. "If Regina's unconscious and without the weapon, there's no way they can win."
"Look!" Belle said.
Regina's backpack was shaking, but quickly stilled again. Henry quickly opened it. "There's no water bottle in here."
"Regina just summoned it," Rumple said. He didn't add that the magic he'd sensed had been extremely unstable and he wasn't sure would hold long enough to get the object to her. "Ms. Swan, have you managed to get your emotions back under control? Your magic could be quite useful."
"How am I supposed to know?" Emma asked.
"Try something simple."
Emma concentrated on lifting one of the pillows off the bed. She scrunched her face and frowned and nothing came.
"The witch is going to be desperate once she learns the book is gone. You need to pull it together, Ms. Swan. We're going to need your magic," Rumple warned. He picked up his dagger and held it for a moment before it disappeared into thin air.
"Rumple?" Belle questioned.
"Had to move it somewhere safe before she returns." Rumple said in explanation.
"We need a plan in case Regina can't defeat the witch on her own. I'm not leaving Snow and the baby at risk." David said.
Rumple nodded. "I agree. We need a back up plan in case her majesty fails."
"Let's go downstairs and see if Blue has ideas." David said. Belle and Rumple immediately followed him. Henry moved onto the bed. He had picked up Regina's wet clothes from the floor and was holding them in his arms. Emma started to follow the others downstairs, but stopped when she turned and saw Henry sitting on the bed.
She sighed. "Regina's going to be fine, kid. She always is."
"Stop being angry and help her." Henry said.
"It's not that simple." Emma argued.
"Yes, it is." Henry said.
"I know she raised you, but we've had a happy life. Safe. Free from all this. And it's her fault we're here again. In danger."
"No it's not. She didn't do this. The wicked witch did." Henry said.
"Henry, it was her curse to begin with. You said it yourself. She's the evil queen."
"Not anymore. She gave you her memories so we could be happy in New York. She gave up everything for me." Henry said. "She really loves me."
"Henry-"
"No. It's true. And now she's killing herself to save us all and you're too angry with her to even help her. I think you want her to die so you can take me back to New York and not have to worry about her stopping you." Henry said angrily.
"Henry, that's not-"
"Leave me alone," Henry said and turned his back on Emma.
She sighed again and left the room.
"Is she…" Snow trailed off afraid to finish the question.
Robin twisted in his restraints until he could get a better look at Regina. Her head was slumped forward unnaturally. "I don't think she would have bothered to restrain her if she was dead," he offered.
He frowned as he looked at Snow. Her stomach seemed to be visibly bigger.
"I don't think she'll be able to breathe with her head like that. We need to help her." Snow said.
"Why do you want to help her? The witch made it sound like the Queen killed your father along with hundreds of citizens in your kingdom." Robin said.
"She didn't kill my father, though she was responsible for his death. But she's not that person anymore. And even if she was, we can't let her die here." Snow said.
Robin looked at the genuine worry in Snow's eyes. He didn't understand. Regina herself had admitted to killing her own father and lover, how could Snow be so forgiving of such an evil woman?
Regina semi-coughed in her unconscious state as she struggled to breathe. "See? She's choking." Snow said.
Robin felt as though his own air supply was being cut off. He frowned. He was a thief. He could get out of these restraints. He glanced around for something within reach that he could use to pick the lock.
"Can you pick a lock?" Snow was asking as though reading his mind.
"If I had something to pick it with," he answered.
Snow was ahead of him already removing a pin from her hair. She let it drop to the floor and then used her foot to kick it to Robin.
He stretched out his leg and pulled it toward him until he could reach it with his hand. Within minutes he was free.
Snow let out a little gasp of pain which she quickly tried to hide when Robin turned to her.
"Are you alright?" He started to go to her.
"I'm fine. Get Regina down." Snow ordered.
Robin followed her instructions. He undid the locks and her arms dropped down and the rest of her body fell forward on to him.
Regina felt the rush of warmth as her body fell into Robin's. Magic. Her eyes flew open. He was already moving her back onto the ground and away from him. She wanted to grab him and pull herself back into his arms. She needed the contact. But before she could she heard Snow gasping in pain.
Robin let Regina drop and hurried to Snow's side, unlocking her cuffs as well.
"What's wrong?" Robin asked.
"Nothing. I'm fine." Snow said.
Regina took in Snow's appearance. Her baby bump had grown. Exponentially. Zelena's potion had worked. Snow looked ready to deliver at any moment.
"The potion worked." Regina stated.
"What?" Robin asked confused.
"Has your water broke?" Regina asked ignoring Robin.
Snow shook her head. "But I think they are contractions." Tears were welling in Snow's eyes. Regina stood and using the wall for support managed to get over to Snow. "Not here." Snow said softly facing Regina.
"Shush." Regina soothed. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you or your baby." She opened her arms and Snow gladly turned into Regina's embrace. She felt like the young girl who had fallen off the horse and felt safe in Regina's arms again.
Robin looked at the Queen embracing the woman whose life she'd tried to destroy. He didn't understand. She seemed so maternal and protective. He couldn't reconcile the woman he was looking at with what she'd done.
"Ahh!" Snow cried.
"Shush." Regina said again. "I know it hurts, but you need to try to be quiet. I can't deal with you and my sister at once."
Snow pulled away from Regina's arms. "What do you mean 'deal with'? What are you going to do?"
"I'm going to get you out of here." Regina said firmly.
Snow looked at Regina's already pale face. She had managed to get the shaking under control, but Snow had felt the heat radiating off Regina when she embraced her. She must have a fever. Then another contraction hit. Stronger this time. Snow bit her lip and grabbed Regina's arm tightly. When the contraction passed she let go. As Regina reached her hand up to brush Snow's hair back, Snow caught sight of the nail marks she's left on Regina's arm.
"How far apart was that?" Regina asked. "How long have you been having contractions?"
"I…I don't know. They just started…" Snow stammered.
"They are getting closer very quickly." Robin said.
Regina nodded. "It's the potion. Speeding things up."
"What's your plan, your majesty?" Robin asked.
Regina turned to answer, when Snow was hit with yet another contraction. No. These were much too close. Regina hesitated, Gold or Whale? Which would be her better shot? Regina didn't trust either man, but she didn't have a lot of options at this point.
"Regina. I don't want to do this. Not here. Not now. It's too soon." Snow was nearly crying.
Regina stroked her hair gently. "Hush. You can do this. It's not going to be here. But I can't wait any longer. The baby is coming too quickly. Listen to me, Snow, you are going to be fine. Your baby is going to be healthy and beautiful and you're both going to be safe. I know you're scared, but-"
"The only way to overcome your fears is to face them." Snow finished. She nodded and took a deep breath.
"Are you ready?" Regina asked.
Snow nodded. Regina put her hand on Snow and shut her eyes. Robin watched as the Queen's hand began shaking and the shaking slowly traveled up her body. Sweat formed around her hairline. Snow was looking at her with concern. The door burst open.
"Time already?" Zelena asked as she stormed toward Snow, but just before she reached her Snow disappeared.
