"Um, are you done eating your breakfast?" John asked Anthony the next morning when the little boy was just staring at the bowl of cereal for the past couple of minutes. John was feeding Mikayla who at this point was playing with her breakfast more than she was actually eating it.
Anthony looked up at John and nodded. "All done."
"Ah no," John shook his head. "You didn't eat anything. You only had a few spoons. You have to eat a little more."
Anthony shook his head. "I don't wanna."
John let out a sigh before focusing his full attention to Anthony after taking away the bowl of oatmeal Mikayla was making a mess with all over her face and all over the front high chair she was seated on. He was about to say something to Anthony, but Mikayla began to cry because her 'toy' was taken away from her and she didn't have it anymore to play with. John looked back over at Mikayla and realized she wanted the bowl he was just about to place on the table. He decided to give her the bowl of oatmeal again after he thought she was going to need a bath anyways so he might as well just let her play with it other wise she wouldn't stop crying while he talked to Anthony and tried to get him to eat some more. Once the little girl stopped crying and went back to entertaining herself and making more of a mess, John turned his attention back to the little boy.
"Anthony, you have to eat more. Just a couple of more bites, okay?"Anthony merely shook his head once again. "Anthony, you have to eat something," John insisted even though he had a feeling his son, who was now trying to get up and leave the table, wasn't going to cooperate. "No," he said before Anthony could get up and leave. "You have to sit here until you finish your breakfast."
"I don't wanna," Anthony pouted.
John didn't say anything for a moment because he really didn't know what to do now because Lita was usually around and almost always go through to him and was actually able to make him eat a little more than he initially did. John knew he couldn't force Anthony to eat because it would probably make him sick if he did that. "Okay fine," John said finally giving in. "Put your bowl in the sink and then go to the bathroom upstairs and wash your hands and face. Okay?"
Anthony nodded. "Okay daddy," he said before he got up to do as he was told.
"Be careful getting on and off the stool," John said referring to the platform stool he placed near the sink in the kitchen and in one of the bathrooms in the house so Anthony would be able to reach it.
After Anthony was done with that simple task, he began to leave the kitchen so he could go upstairs while John began to clean the mess Mikayla made. She didn't cry this time when he took the empty bowl away from her. She was now banging he hands on the table. John laughed when he got a good look at Mikayla.
"The only way you're going to get cleaned is if you get a bath," John said as he picked up Mikayla from the chair before walking out the kitchen. He didn't care that the oatmeal all over her was getting onto his clothes. "Let's go see if your brother needs our help." The little girl responded by grabbing his nose and pulling it. He moved his head a bit, but now instead of his nose, Mikayla pulled his ear. "Daddy's face is not a toy."
Once John was upstairs, he went over to the bathroom he knew Anthony would be in. He heard the water still running when he arrived outside the bathroom. He looked inside and saw Anthony was just about to turn off the faucets. When Anthony got off of the stool and turned to the side so he was facing John, the latter noticed the former's shirt was a little wet on the front of it. He wasn't surprised to see there was water all over the sink and some of it dropped on the floor. He would just have to clean that up.
"Be careful," John said when Anthony started to make his way towards him even though the water that spilled on the floor was right in front of the sink and Anthony wasn't even near the sink anymore. "Maybe you should change your shirt. Well, it's not a lot of water, you won't get sick so maybe it's okay." He paused. "I have to give Mikayla a bath. Do you want to play with your toys?"
Anthony shrugged. "I don't know."
"I'm going to take that as a 'yes' so let's go to your room, you're not staying downstairs by yourself."
The two left the bathroom and went to Anthony's room. Anthony began playing with some toys while John placed Mikayla on the bed for a moment so he could go to her nursery to get the bouncer so the little girl could play in it for a while so he could clean up the water from the bathroom. He knew he had to clean the water from the floor before he forgot all about it and Anthony could go back and slip and fall and hurt himself. He would never hear the end of that from Lita.
After John was done with cleaning the water in the bathroom, he went back to Anthony's room to see Mikayla was still happily playing in the bouncer. However, Anthony had abandoned his toys and was now jumping on the bed.
"Stop jumping and sit down," John said to Anthony who ignored him and continued to jump. "Anthony, stop jumping before you hurt yourself." Anthony still didn't do as he was told. John sighed, shaking his head. Anthony wasn't giving him any problems the night before probably because he went to sleep about two hours after Lita dropped him off. That flight probably tired him out. If John didn't know any better, he would think that Lita paid off Anthony to give his father a hard time.
John was about to tell Anthony to stop jumping again but he didn't have to because the little boy stopped jumping before he could tell him to do so. John thought Anthony was probably tired, but that was better than him continuing to jump. He did remember Lita telling him before that Anthony hurt himself while jumping on the bed under Randy's watch which caused him to get a cut under his chin.
"No more jumping, okay?" John said as he picked up Mikayla from the bouncer. "I have to give your sister a bath so please just sit here and play with your toys. Please do not jump on the bed again. Okay?"
Anthony nodded as he began to play with his toys again. "Okay."
"Okay great. Just no more jumping," John added one last time before he walked out with Mikayla in hand while Anthony continued to play with his toys.
John walked passed Anthony's room after he was done giving Mikayla her bath. He looked inside the room to see Anthony was still occupied with his toys before he went to the nursery to get Mikayla dressed. Had he kept looking a little while longer, John wouldn't have missed seeing Anthony jumping up and down on the bed again.
Just as John was about to fix Mikayla a bottle so he could feed her and put her down for a late morning nap, he heard a loud crashing sound followed by a scream and cries.
"What the hell?" John said to himself as the screaming and crying became louder. He quickly placed Mikayla, who began crying once she was out of his arms, into her crib and ran towards where he heard the noise coming from Anthony's room. Once he arrived to Anthony's room, he saw the little boy lying on the ground near the bed crying and screaming.
"Damn," John said sitting down on the ground where Anthony was lying. "You were jumping on the bed again, weren't you? I told you to stop, why didn't you listen?"
The man tried to get the boy in a seating position to no avail. He kept crying and screaming when he felt the pain increase.
"I want mommy!" Anthony cried.
"I know. So do I because she would know what to do. But I don't mean your mommy, I mean my mommy because your mommy is going to kick my ass if anything happens to you."
"I want mommy!" Anthony cried once again.
John let out a sigh. "Okay. I'll call mommy," he said as he pulled his phone out of his pocket and dialed Lita's number, "but we need to go to the hospital." He waited for Lita to answer the phone, but he didn't receive an answer and hung up and tried again when he was met by her voice-mail. "Damn it," he groaned in frustration when Lita still wouldn't answer the phone.
Both Anthony and Mikayla were still crying. John felt like he was about to lose his mind with both of his children crying at the same time. The night before alone with both of them didn't go that bad because it was only a couple of hours until Anthony fell asleep and he was used to having Mikayla by himself. He should have known a whole day would cause some trouble. Too bad the day was still young and now he was on his way to the emergency room. Boy, was Lita going to be pissed. He wouldn't be surprised if she tried to kill him and succeeded.
Half an hour went by and John was finally at the hospital with Anthony and Mikayla. Anthony was still crying although not as loud as before. John knew all that crying had to be tiring him out. He managed to get Mikayla fed before she fell asleep in the car on their way to the hospital.
"How can I help you?" the receptionist, Emily, at the front desk asked when John walked up there along with a sleeping Mikayla in the car sea in his hands and Anthony standing by his side.
"I'm pretty sure my son hurt himself after he fell down off the bed he was jumping up and down on. I think it's his arm because he keeps holding it."
The lady looked up at the trio before looking back at her computer and asking John some questions. "What's his name?"
"Anthony Alexander Dumas," John replied with the receptionist typing his answer on the computer.
"Your name?"
"John Cena."
"What is your relation to the patient?"
"I told you he's my son so obviously his father."
"His step-father?"
"No, I'm his biological father."
Emily didn't say anything for a moment as she looked up at John in confusion. "Are you sure? I mean, you two have a different last name and usually a child has the same name as his father no matter what his parents relationship status. I'm assuming you're not married to his mother."
John scowled. She was really pissing him off now with these personal questions he was sure she had no business asking him. "I fail to see how any of that is any of your business. You asked me for his name and then my name so I'm giving it to you. The difference in our last names isn't any of your concern nor is my relationship with his mother. Just finish whatever the hell you're doing and get my son to see a doctor."
"I apologize for over stepping my boundaries. I'm just trying to establish what relationship you have with a child you brought to the emergency room."
John decided to stay quiet even though he wanted to tell her off and tell her that was no way to interact with a patient or a patient's parent because he just wanted Anthony to get some help as soon as he could. Emily continued with the questions again which went smoothly until she got to the part about insurance. John could tell she wanted to make some remark about him not knowing that information, but she didn't say anything. They continued the rest of the forms and Emily told him that he could come back with the insurance information later.
A couple of more minutes had gone by when John heard his phone ring when he was sitting in the waiting area with Anthony. He dropped Mikayla at the child care center at the hospital after Emily told him he wouldn't be able to take Mikayla back to any of the rooms and should just drop her off there instead. He took his phone out of his pocket and saw it was Lita calling. He took a deep breath before he answered her call.
"Hey Lita."
"Hey John," Lita answered calmly. John knew that was going to change once he told her where he was. "My phone battery died so I put my phone on charge and it was off when you called earlier. I just turned it on right now and saw that you called a couple of times, but you didn't leave a message. What's up?"
John looked down at Anthony who stopped crying but was still very much in pain. "Um, well, okay. Here's the thing. It's not that... He's okay, but hear me out before you freak out." Lita didn't say anything for a moment as she tried to register all that John just said to her. She didn't have enough time to do so because he continued. John was about to tell her the story from the beginning, but he just blurted out the ending instead. "We're at the hospital."
"Hospital?" Lita asked repeating the last word that left John's mouth. "What the hell did you do to my son?!"
"He was jumping on the bed and he fell off?"
"You let him jump on the bed?! You're supposed to stop him from doing that! When he does something wrong, you're supposed to stop him, but obviously you won't do that because you don't want to be the bad cop! Well, tough luck!" She was about to say more, but John decided this was the perfect moment to interrupt her.
"Lita, you need to calm down. Yelling isn't going to-"
"Stop talking!" Lita shouted, interrupting him. She took a deep breath and continued calmly because John was right, yelling wasn't going to help out matters. "Which hospital are you at?"
"Tampa General," came John's simply response.
"I'll see you soon," was all Lita said before hanging up the phone with John doing the same. He wasn't surprised by Lita's reaction although he was expecting more, but he thought she was saving that for when they were face to face.
It was ten minutes after John hung up the phone with Lita that a doctor was finally ready to check out Anthony and see what the problem was with him. It was another fifteen minutes after Anthony was taken to the back to be checked out that Lita arrived to the hospital. She asked the receptionist at the front desk for information about Anthony and headed towards the room where he was after she received the information.
Lita sighed in relief when she entered the room Anthony was in and saw him sitting on the bed. "Oh sweetie," she said as she walked closer to him. He wasn't crying right now, but she could tell he had been doing a lot of it recently. She stopped herself from hugging him like she wanted to because she wasn't sure what it was that he injured. "Everything is going to be okay. Mommy is here now."
"Lita-" John began to say only to be interrupted when he redheaded woman held up her hand at John, still looking at Anthony.
"Don't speak." Lita looked over at the doctor, Dr. Webber, in the room. "So what seems to be the problem? Is he going to be okay?"
"Well, we are still running tests, but initially, it looks like an elbow fracture because there's a lot of swelling and bruising. It's not uncommon for kids who fall and hurt themselves." Lita glanced at John with a glare present on her face when the doctor said that. "I was just about to take him down for an x-ray to confirm it and to see how serious the issue is." He glanced between the two parents before continuing. "You two can stay here because it's not like you'll be allowed in the x-ray room."
Lita shook her head. "No. That won't work for me." John rolled his eyes at her stubbornness but didn't say anything.
"That's hospital procedure, Mrs. Cena. There's-"
"No, it's Miss Dumas," Lita corrected him. "But you can call me Lita."
"I apologize. Sorry for the misunderstanding." Dr. Webber paused for a moment before continuing. "No one else is allowed in the room other than the technician and the patient. You can either wait here or outside of the room."
Lita nodded. "We'll wait here," she said as she looked up at John. "We need to talk."
"Of course we do," John muttered under his breath.
"Okay. After the technician is done," as if on cue, a woman who happened to be the technician entered the room along with a wheelchair to take him to the room, "she will bring your son back in the room. I'll come back after I get the results and tell you where we go from there. Any questions?"
John shook his head, but Lita spoke up. "How long will this take?"
"The x-ray shouldn't too long, but that all depends on how cooperative Anthony is and how the pictures come out." Lita merely nodded. Dr. Webber looked over at Anthony. "Anthony, can you please sit down on here for me?" He asked referring to the wheelchair in front of him.
Anthony didn't say anything in response, simply looking up at Lita. "It's okay. The nice people are going to help fix your elbow."
The little boy pouted and it looked like he was about to start crying all over again. "Mommy, it hurts."
Lita let out a sigh and nodded. "I know sweetie, but the nice doctor is going to help you."
Anthony nodded and sat down on the wheelchair with Lita's help. "You coming too mommy?"
Lita shook her head. "Sorry sweetie, but I promise you I'm going to be right here waiting for you when you come back."
"You promise?"
Lita nodded. "I promise." She took the chance to give him a hug avoiding touching his left arm now that she knew which side was actually injured. "I love you," she said before ending the hug.
The doctor and technician left along with a scared Anthony. Lita wanted to go with him, but she was told she couldn't going inside the room. She was about to just follow them and wait outside the room, but that wasn't going to help her feel any better. And there was the whole wanting to talk to John thing. Maybe talking to him away from others around was better. At least they were separated when they were in one of the rooms.
John was about to open his mouth to say something, but Lita stopped him. "Don't. Don't speak until I tell you to." She walked over to the sliding glass doors to the room and closed them hoping that her voice wouldn't travel if she did start yelling.
Lita took a deep breath before she turned around to look at John who was looking right back at her. "So he was jumping on the bed?"
"Yes."
"And you didn't tell him to stop doing that?"
"I did." John decided to keep his answers short because he knew the temper she had on her and she didn't want to test her especially since they were in a public place.
Lita waited for him to say more, but when he didn't, she spoke up. "And he didn't listen and he fell? I don't understand. Tell me what happened."
"Well no. He did listen, but I had to give Mikayla a bath because today she decided to play with her oatmeal and she was really messy."
"John," Lita interrupted him before he could full on ramble. "I don't care about Mikayla. Okay, that came out wrong," she said when she realized how that sounded. "I don't care about Mikayla needing a bath, what I care is what happened to my son."
John nodded. "Right. Okay, um, he made a little mess in the bathroom so I left him and Mikayla in his room while I cleaned it up. He was playing with his toys when I left. When I came back, Anthony was jumping on the bed. I told him to stop a couple of times and he told me no, but then he randomly stopped himself. I told him not to jump anymore because I had to give Mikayla a bath so I went to give her a bath. I walked by his room a few minutes after and he was still playing with his toys. Then I heard a loud crashing sound and he was screaming and crying. I went to his room and there he was lying on the ground."
"Let me get this straight," Lita started to say after John was done with the story. "So you left him alone in his room after you knew he kept jumping up and down on his bed?" John nodded. "Knowing full well he could possibly do it again especially when you left?"
"Lita-"
"What the hell were you thinking?!" John was surprised it took her that long to start yelling at him again. "You don't just leave a child in the room by themselves when you know they will do something they're not supposed to! You knew he was jumping on the damn bed so why not just take him with you?! You said you wanted to give Mikayla a bath, then tell him to sit outside of the damn bathroom. Tell him he's on timeout for jumping on the damn bed and that's why you're forcing him to sit out there!"
"I don't know why you're so angry with me. He was jumping. He's a very hyper little kid, that's what they do. You know this could have happened on your watch."
Lita nodded furiously and John knew that only angered her even more. "Except I would have done what I just suggested you to do if I was in your situation! I don't know what the hell possessed me to think I can trust you alone with my son!"
John was calm for the most part, but what she just said set him off. He was so sick and tired with how Lita and even Mickie kept feeding him that line the past day or so. "For the billionth time, he is my son too! I don't give a damn if you trust me with him or not! You don't see me saying I don't trust you with him! I'm not the first or last parent whose child was injured! Shit happens, it's life! You need to calm down!"
Lita had to bite her tongue from blowing up at him once again. She noticed some people passing by the room kept looking inside of it and they were attracting attention so she tried to calm herself down. "Okay. You're right, stuff happens. He is always jumping around so this was bound to happen. He didn't listen to you, so what are you going to do about it?"
"Um what?" John asked confused.
"He disobeyed you. He didn't listen to the rules. When a child doesn't listen to the rules, you punish them. He didn't listen to you therefore it's up to you to come up with a punishment. So what are you going to do?"
"Isn't what he's going through right now punishment enough?"
Lita thought about it for a moment then nodded. "You're right, but you have to keep that in mind for next time. He's still only three and a half so timeout is the most effective thing, but you can't let him get away with anything letting him think he can do whatever he wants."
"Okay," John said and that was all he was going to leave it at, but there was something else that was bothering him and he wanted to make sure Lita knew about it. "Look, I'm getting really fed up with you saying that you don't trust me with my own son. I'm getting really irritated with you acting like I don't know what I'm doing and that he's only your son and not mine. I know what happened to Anthony just now, he probably has a fracture and I'm sorry that happened, but it happened and there's nothing I can do change it now. You know I'm still kind of new at this and I'm still learning. Hell, you even said you're still learning too."
Lita looked away for a moment as she thought about what he just said. He was right. Anthony was both of their son and to him she wasn't acting like it. "You're right," Lita said as she looked back at John. "I'm sorry. But he's my son and I really worry about him-"
"I do too."
"-and I know I tend to overreact sometimes when it involves him, but I can't help that and I cannot and will not apologize for that."
John walked over to Lita and hugged her when he saw she was on the verge of tears. "Hey, it's okay. He's going to be okay. You heard the doctor. A fracture isn't that big of a deal. I mean, it could have been worse. He's hurt, but he'll be okay." Lita didn't say anything in response, but John could tell she was calming down now.
Lita moved away from John and ended the hug before looking up at him. "Thanks. I don't know... I'm okay."
"Are you sure?" John asked to which Lita simply nodded.
Lita was about to wipe away her tears, but John beat her to it. Lita looked down at his hand then closed her eyes for a moment then opened them back up when she didn't feel his hand near her face anymore. She slowly looked up at him and saw him staring intently into her eyes. She found herself staring right back at him and that's what she was afraid of. Next thing the two knew, Lita kissed John. Not only did she kiss him, but he kissed her back as well. The kiss didn't last long because the two finally comprehended what they were doing and pulled apart avoiding any type of eye contact.
"I'm sorry," Lita said still avoiding any type of eye contact with John who was actually looking at her. She shook her head. "I don't know what overcame me, but that shouldn't have happened and cannot happen again. It was a mistake and I..." she trailed off when she didn't know where she was even going with this. All she knew was that that kiss shouldn't have happened.
"Because you have a boyfriend." That was more of a statement than a question that left John's mouth.
Lita nodded as she finally looked back up at John. "Part of it."
John didn't say anything in response and it became awkwardly quiet between the two. It wasn't too long until the tech brought Anthony back in the room. The trio waited in relative silence except for when Anthony kept asking when they could go home and other questions like that with either one of his parents answering his questions.
The doctor came in more than half an hour later. Dr. Webber confirmed his earlier suspicions that Anthony had an elbow fracture. Anthony's parents were told his injury wasn't enough to require surgery and could be healed by wearing a cast for a few weeks. After a cast was adjusted to Anthony, John went to pick up Mikayla from the child care center at the hospital. Lita didn't want to leave Anthony's side so she decided to go to John's house instead of back to the hotel. She took John's car and the kids back to his place while he went in the car she rented to the hotel to pick up her things for her. Both were wondering if her staying at his house was a smart idea after the kiss at the hotel even though they agreed it was a mistake. Somehow their mistakes had a habit of being repeated.
