36. Chapter 36 The siege or Riverside

Chapter 36: The siege of Riverside

Bodies lay slumped against the floor inside the control centre as gunfire began to erupt over the whole of Riverside, the 2 hunters wearing their military clothing watched as the main gate protecting the citizens of Riverside opened exposing them to the mass army waiting at their doorstep, "this is gonna be good" said the female hunter smiling evilly as she watched as the humans began to open fire on the mass of red eyes waiting at the now open front gate. The male hunter merely grunted before they both turned around and left the room and the dead bodies with blood pooling underneath them behind, once outside they discarded their military clothing and bared their teeth and claws as they set out to find and kill as many humans as they could.

The citizens of Riverside opened fire as the horde at the front gate began to charge in, bodies slumped to the floor as bullets slammed into them however more and more fresher bodies ran over them slowly but surely closing the distance to the battalion of humans that now acted as the defence of Riverside, soon enough a monstrous roar occurred from outside the gate and a car flew threw the air landing on an APC crushing the people inside. "Shit!" Sergeant Marcell cried out as a tank came into view throwing its mighty fists into the air as the horde seemed to rally around the behemoth, "SHOOT THAT BIG ASS MOTHER FUCKER!" a soldier cried as Whitaker and his gang slowly backed away as the creature began to charge froward smashing into an unfortunate soldier before tossing him into the horde where he was ripped to pieces by a nearby waiting hunter. Many citizens began to fire on the tank which roared in fury as a Molotov exploded on its hulking mass engulfing it in flames. As minigun fire erupted onto the beast it wailed one final time as the heavy fire and the burning of the Molotov were too much for the creature killing it off quickly, "we did it" Dave cried out in joy however all hopes of success were soon lost as another huge behemoth came into view, "god damnit!" Rick cried out emptying an entire magazine into the horde before ejecting the spent casing and slapping in another one. Jake's shotgun boomed as it tore holes and exploded heads off things that came too close to comfort, while Sam's hunting rifle buzzed as high powered rifle shots pierced infected bodies sending the offenders to the permanent afterlife, while the automatic gunfire of the others cackled as bullets penetrated emaciated bodies toppling them over, eventually the second tank fell and the survivors became encouraged by their short victory... however it was only short.

Soon enough a loud roar occurred that shock the air around them itself as a gargantuan creature emerged into view, being deep orange in colour and 3 times the size of the 2 tanks that came before it the firing stopped as the survivors gaped in horror at the mammoth that stood before them, the horde rallied around the creature screaming in fury and rage as the creature stood ahead of its underlings displaying its full form to those unfortunate enough to witness it. "Her majesty has ordered your destruction Whitaker and therefore i shall deliver" said Todd, he then bellowed as he ripped a large hunk of concrete out of the ground and threw it at the nearest APC which attempted to move backwards as the projectile came forward. The effect was instantaneous, as the rock collided with the APC the vehicle exploded showering debris and flames all over the area, survivors screamed in agony as they were caught in the blast and incinerated anyone unfortunate enough to be too close, other survivors screamed and ran away as flames began to spread all over the area, Todd bellowing in furious delight at his handy work. Whitaker, the Sergeant and the others all looked in horror as the area around them was desecrated by the flames, ""RETREAT!" the Sergeant suddenly called out and everyone began to fire and back up as Todd roared causing all the infected to begin charging forward again, the final APC fired a explosive that impacted on Todd's body causing him to stumbled backwards several feet. "GO WE'LL HOLD THEM OFF!" said the driver as the APC began to fire all its weapons as the mass of infected which were held back by its sheer firepower, the other survivors all rounded the corner and began running along the main street of Riverside, "all remaining units we have lost the front gate fall back to the edge of Riverside and prepare to hold off the attacking infected and get several men to the control centre to seal the main gate!" Sergeant Marcell shouted through his radio com link as smoke could be seen floating over the buildings that now obstructed their view of the ongoing battle. Whitaker looked around him at the people who were now utterly terrified and sighed, after going so far to find salvation they had lost it again to a super witch and her nasty ass pet, he grunted in annoyance before carrying on with the other survivors retreating to the back end of Riverside. The siege of Riverside had begun and so far it was not looking good for the humans as the infected had already penetrated their first defense, with all 4 of the APC down it was only going to get worse unless a miracle happened...

Several soldiers ran towards a large building where they had last received a broadcast from a fellow soldier that infected had been in the vicinity, they ran into the building and bolted up the stairs however once they reached the top of the stairs they froze as they sounds of a woman crying reached their ears, "is that a woman crying?" one of them asked confused as another frowned. "Its crying alright...but it doesn't sound normal if you ask me" he said raising his assault rifle and slowly walking towards the nearest door becoming more concerned as the crying steadily grew louder and louder, "I really dont like the sound of that crying" he said as he opened the door very slowly the front 2 soldiers gently edging into the room as the crying echoed off the walls piercing their ears with its terrifying presence. They shone their lights around the room however one successful sweep revealed that the room was empty, "i could've sworn the crying was in here" said one soldier taking another look around the room but once again finding nothing with the gaze of his flashlight. "Maybe you got it wrong" the other soldier said also taking a look round the room, the first soldier then put a hand on the other soldier's shoulder as he turned to face him, the realization both hit them like a ton of bricks, the crying had stopped. The second soldier then froze in horror and began to back away as a pair of red eyes lit up in the space behind the first soldier, "oh shit" was all he managed before talons pierced the soldier's stomach the creature screaming in fury as it then slashed the soldiers neck, he immediately collapsed to the floor clutching his neck as a pool of blood formed underneath him. The second soldier screamed and began firing his weapons as screams bounced off the walls of the building they were in, soon after their was several more screams before one final ear piercing scream occurred before there was nothing but silence in the building, then the tortured sobbing began once again.

Todd bellowed as the infected charged through the destroyed charred of the APC's, he soon began to follow the infected towards his objective killing Whitaker and his band of survivors, the survivors had retreated to the back end of Riverside and Todd merely watched as those that were left behind were slaughtered by the unstopping mass of infected that was now invading Riverside. Mercy coolly walked up alongside him chuckling as he stood staring at the destruction he helped cause as the 2 hunters now discarded from their human armour jumped down from a rooftop to join them, "you see the damage you can cause my dear Todd, with you alone we could end the survivors of this wretched town" Mercy said caressing the giant monsters shoulder with her fingers. "We will end the survivors of this whole world your majesty not just this pathetic little town, then all will surrender to your will" he said before charging off to follow the trail of the escaping survivors, Mercy merely watched him with a chuckle as he lead the infected towards nearby gunfire, "I have a feeling he will do more damage to this town then I first thought" she said before sadistic laughter escaped her mouth as the 2 hunters merely watched. She then turned to address them both as they stood to attention, "well done in infiltrating their ranks and opening the gates, now go and ensure that Todd and the others kill Whitaker and his band of misfits" she said smiling as they nodded before jumping off to join the fray, "nothing and no one in this town can stop me now" she said before more laughter escaped from her as the infected blindly continued to run past her after the escaping survivors.

Whitaker and his friends and some of the remaining people of Riverside and had run for 5 minutes straight with out stopping only turning to fire at infected that got to eager for their liking as they retreated to the far end of Riverside they had retreated to a rural area which was slowly leading them to Riverside park, "once we get to the park what then?" Jake called as they continued a slow retreat firing at any infected that came into view. "We get through the park and then to the River where boats are waiting to evac us to the Allegheny national forest where we will be taken to evac echo" he said and the survivors couldn't have been any happier with that news, "alright then lets do it we are gonna have to declare Riverside a bust but hey if we get to echo we should be alright" said Whitaker as they reached the entrance of Riverside park. However they all froze in terror as a vehicle was tossed over their heads and landed behind them exploding and showering the road ahead in flames, they slowly turned to find Todd standing before them with no other infected around him except for the 2 hunters. "WHITAKER!" he barked his voice savage and furious, "you have evaded me for the last time now you DIE!" he then roared as he raised his mighty fists into the air, gunfire immediately rose out in response, causing the 2 hunters to run out of the way and causing Todd to bellow in anger as bullets pierced his emaciated flesh. He then began to slowly charge forward as the powerful bullets slowed his furious frontal charge however he soon got close enough to send 2 survivors hurling over the gate into the dark park of Riverside where the met with teh gaping mars of the 2 hunters, both men screamed in agony as their insides were ripped to shreds. The other survivors moved out the way however the creature swung around and grabbed Whitaker by the ankle throwing him into a wall he cried out as he slammed against the cold hard surface of the wall, the creature came rampaging towards him raising tis fists into the air however before it could make a killing blow it recoiled in pain. Heavy had discarded his minigun and had jumped onto the creatures back unsheathing his machetes and jamming them as hard into the flesh as possible, Todd cried out and swung around trying to remove the source of pain from his back, Heavy cried out as he was then swung off and hit the ground nearby hard his machetes still firmly in Todd's back. Heavy grunted and got to his feet picking up and strapping back on his beloved minigun, the other survivors all frowned as they raised their weapons to Todd, "its time to take you down a few pegs you big mean son of a bitch" said Dave pointing his shotgun directly at the monster as the 2 hunters remerged standing by Todd's side. "Your bravery is noted by ultimately foolish" said Todd roaring as the survivors began to open fire the 3 infected charging forward dodging the bullets, Whitaker grunted as he regained his composure before taking a look around him, many buildings in this part of Riverside were now burning furiously as screams of pain were heard all around him, "shit!" he cursed standing up and running over to the others.

Elsewhere in the town of Riverside chaos ensured as the inking of survivors left fought for their lives against and endless wave of brainless killing machines hell bent on making them extinct, screams occurred everywhere as survivors were pounced on and ripped to shreds by infected pouncing on them, the remaining survivors fought with all their might as they were picked off one by one firing at anything that dared to move closer to them. Finally only 5 survivors remained in an open area and the infected slowly closed on from all sides screaming in rage as they prepared to attack their last victims, "if we are going down" said one, "we are going down fighting FIRE!" a second cried and all 5 of them fired in unison as the infected began to close in, time seemed to slow down as every bullet fired from every gun, every zombie in its path hit and foiled by the lead hitting its pale flesh. The survivors made every shot count as they slowly fell one by one, finally all 5 of them screamed in agony as the mass of infected buried them, biting scratching and kicking at their unfortunate victims as a blood splattered from the middle of the mass of sick twisted humans, finally the chaos stopped and the infected all seemed to return to their dazed state stumbling around as they slowly dispersed leaving only a large pool of blood and dismantled corpses in their wake. The area then fell silent as more screams and angry shouts were heard in the distance, the survivors slowly lost their grip on the town as mercy and her merciless army stormed through like a savage unstoppable force slowly crumbling the walls of the survivors salvation. Explosions occurred as buildings crumbled and cars and vehicles exploded survivors screamed in agony as they were slowly picked off by the infected who showed no intention of stopping they murderous assault on the denizens of Riverside, the survivors strength continued to whittle away as they were picked off in small chunks their layers of defence being slowly peeled away one by one. The remaining survivors all came to the same conclusion that they had to escape and they had to get to the River to get on a boat before it was too late, as the survivors continued to slowly retreat back to the river, others became lost in the inferno as the town of Riverside slowly burned.

Todd cried in anger as bullets pierced his mighty flesh, while he showed no sign of slowing down it was clear that the bullets were inflicting pain of the behemoth evident by the cries and angry shouts that occurred as the fast moving tiny objects punctured his hardened orange skin, the creature roared as he stumbled forward the combined fire of all of the survivors proofing enough to keep him at bay as he was forced to shield his face from the storm of bullets. "Enough!" he cried ripping a chunk of floor and tossing it at a survivors who cried in pain as he was thrown back against a van by the force blood coming from underneath the rubble of the large piece of debris as the soldier lay sandwiched between the van and rock motionless. Sam cried out as one of the hunters slammed into her jamming its claw into her side causing her to scream in pain as it bared its other hand down towards he throat, suddenly Dave cried out and turned butting the creature with the end of his shotgun causing it to yelp in pain as he fired 2 shots but the creature was too fast moving like Greece lightning it avoided the booms of the buckshot firing weapon. "Hold still you sweet shirt wearing mother fucker!" he cried out as the female hunter tackled him from the side causing him to loose his gun, he cried out as the infected woman smiled savagely raising her claws however she cried out as sam fired a shot from her rifle piercing the infected's pale shoulder causing blood to splatter in the area. The second hunter then reappeared sam rolled out the way as it brung its claws down on her smashing the ground where she was once laid, Dave took the momentary distraction and kicked the female hunter off raising his shotgun and firing at the male hunter who cried out as the buckshot spread pierced his stomach. The hunter recoiled in pain as Dave once again hit with the butt of his shotgun and began to repeatedly slam his weapon into his target who was too dazed to move out of the way, he raised his shotgun for the killing blow but then ducked as the female hunter flew over him landing where in front of the male hunter growling furiously and showing her fanged teeth. "You don't scare me you crazy bitch!" he said raising his weapon as Sam stood next to him raising her rifle as well a grim look of determination on her face, however a roar from behind reminded them of the bigger danger as a soldier flew over the heads hitting the ground with a horrid crack as his body slammed hard and fast into the solid concrete floor. They turned their back to the 2 hunters who took the opportunity to leave the scene the male hunter limping as he clutched his bleeding leg while the female hunter grunted clutching her bleeding shoulder, both of them left the scene as Sam turned to Dave nodding her thanks before clutching her side in pain. Dave sat her down behind a car as the screams and shouts continued, "you stay here ill be back for you in a minute" he said turning away and grabbing the grenade launcher from a holster on his back, "what are you doing?" she asked, "sending this big mother fucker to the grave" he told her smiling as she returned the smile holding her side and looking around for more danger as he ran out of cover towards the others.

Todd was now back against a corner of the road where the fire war still burning furiously from his previously thrown car as all of the survivors continued firing at him, "KEEP FRING!" Sergeant Marcel shouted unloading entire magazines of his M16 into the brute who roared in pain and anger, suddenly Todd stumbled back a grenade projectile slammed against him exploding and pushing him against the wall of a nearby building. He then roared louder then ever pounding his chest with his mighty first before he then charged forward in a savage rage his eyes burning red, the survivors all fired but nothing stopped the mighty beast as he ran over to the last soldier and lifted him up before ripping him in half the survivor and Sergeant Marcel stared in horror as the soldiers divided corpse was tossed into the fire, "DIE!" the beast roared gunning straight for Whitaker, time slowed as Whitaker dropped his M16 to the floor and drew his Bayonet knife he then sidestepped the creature before latching onto its back, Todd cried out as Whitaker began furiously stabbing at the exposed flesh of his back blood spraying all over the middle aged mans face. The other survivors fired at Todd's front as the best roared in fury, finally swinging round he managed to dislodge Whitaker and the 2 machetes from his massive now scratched up back and roared in anger as the survivors continued to fire at him. He then charged forward colliding with Dave and sending him straight into a wall, the man was silent as his body hit the wall with a horrid crack as he then collapsed to the floor the grenade launcher dropping from his grasp. As the others continued to fight off Todd, Sam made her way over to Dave grabbing hold of the grenade launcher with a grim look of determination she turned to face Todd ensuring that the weapon was loaded as she grabbed 2 shells from Dave's bag, "eat this!" she spat as she fired the weapon Todd cried out as the blast sent him flying back into the wall of a nearby tall building. Todd grunted as he looked towards Sam but soon grimaced as he could see her aiming the weapon above him, he could only watch as Sam fired causing the roof of the building to cave in, he cried out as the mass of the building collapsed on top of him burying him in a pile of rubble and brickwork. Everyone went silent as Sam dropped to her knees clutching her side, Sergeant Marcel ran over to Whitaker and shook the older man awake noting her had a large cut on his head where he hit the wall, the other survivors ran over to Dave while Jake and Sian tended to Sam using a first aid kit to disinfect and wrap up her wound.

"Hey Whitaker you alright?" said Sergeant Marcel helping the older man to his feet as he clutched his head and hissed in pain picking up his fallen hat and putting it back on his head, he turned to the younger man holding him up smiling weakly and nodding his hand, "I am now thanks" he said standing up on his own, Sian then walked over to him holding some dressing and disinfectant. After everyone was patched up and had gathered their bearings they all crowded around Dave and Gary as Dave still lay on the floor motionless, Sam and Sian both gasped in horror as Gary held his motionless friend in his hands, he shook him several times but the man did not move at all, everyone began to look downcast as they assumed the worst Rick gritting his teeth in anger. Sergeant marcel bowed his head in sorrow a look of anger on his face, "id say we go back there and give that witch bitch something to cry about" he said Rick turning and nodding his agreement with the man however Whitaker put his hand on the mans shoulder, "going back there will only result in more needless death's" he said the Sergeant nodding and begrudgingly agreeing. The 2 women began to cry as Heavy consulted Gary pulling the younger man into a hug as they both stared down at their lifeless friend, "there nothing we can do for him now boy he's in a better place" Heavy said as the sergeant bought over a large blanket handing it to Gary who was struggling to hold back tears. "Goodbye Dave ill miss you, you crazy son of a bitch" he said laying the blanket over his motionless friend and laying his body against the wall, with a final nod Gary stood and began to walk towards the entrance to Riverside park, "come on lets just get out of this shitty town already" he said coldly walking into the dark park leading towards the river. The others all looked sadly the 2 women with tears in their eyes as they began to follow Gary through Riverside park, no one said a word as they silently left the scene of a grizzly murder, Dave had been killed and the survivors were devastated beyond belief, the mass of debris behind them rumbled as several pieces fell to the ground.

The town or Riverside fell into ruin as Mercy's army charged through murdering everyone in their path, Mercy herself coolly walked through the town laughing at anyone stupid enough to try and get close enough to kill her, her infected army weren't intelligent by any stretches of the imagination but they knew that their primary goal was to protect their queen and swiftly dealt with anyone who got 2 close to her, not that she had anything to worry about. She knew better that mere humans would not be enough to stop her, the human race had yet to learn what she could do with the influence of the green flu inside of her, they had no idea the power she had compared to other beings who had merely been infected by the basic strain of the green flu virus, 'ha the basic strain' she thought to herself smiling. She merely walked along and watched as survivors screamed in terror and agony as they were picked off one by one like a group of flies caught in a spiders web, however her calm demeanour was gone when she caught sight of the 2 hunters stumbling towards her with downcast expressions. "You two, why are you coming back here with such downcast expressions and what on earth has happened to you, why aren't you out dealing with survivors?" she asked frustration present in her tone as the 2 hunters fearfully looked at her, "we got badly beaten by Whitaker and his hang your majesty" said the male hunter putting a hand to his bleeding head where he had been struck by Dave's shotgun several times. "What you're saying is that you have failed to deal with Whitaker and his band of troublemakers?" she asked with a raised eyebrow as they look at her fearfully nodding in agreement, "well then let us go see what the damage is shall we and you better hope I have something good to look forward to or you will be punished severely" she hissed as she walked past them rushing them to follow her.

Eventually after 5 minutes of continues walking they had reached the site of the standoff with Whitaker and his friends, Mercy chuckled as she gazed upon the dead bodies of humans that lay around, "well it looks as though Todd had been doing his job properly" she said sighing as her gaze crossed to a form hidden under a blanket, she quickly walked over and lifted the blanket off to reveal the bloody beaten dead form of Dave Mercy immediately smiled as she recognised the face. "Well it looks as though he got one of Whitakers little trouble makers after all" she said howling with laughter and throwing the blanket back over the body, "why cover the body with a blanket?" the male hunter asked, "a sign of respect for the dead and there resting place" she said coldly walking over to the rubble. "Now what happened here" she said walking over and examining the scene before her, she then gasped as she spotted a piece of orange arm buried in the rubble, she collapsed to her knees her lip quivering as she came to the realisation of who was buried under the rubble, "Todd..." she murmured. Suddenly the rubble rumbled violently as the exposed fist clenched as suddenly the rubble exploded, all 3 of them jumped back in shock as a large figure towered over them growling in anger as it pounded it mighty chests with its mammoth tusk sized fists, "where is Whitaker?" the figure asked menacingly. Mercy smiled as the 2 hunters pointed towards the entrance to Riverside park, "the remaining survivors of Riverside are heading towards the River to be recued by boats that will take them to some place called evac echo" said the female hunter shrugging as Mercy once again stood to her feet smiling all the same. "Then let us go at once and see if we can stop them once and for all" she said menacingly hopping onto Todd's shoulder as the massive behemoth began to march forward through the entrance into Riverside park, a mass of infected began to follow as well as the 2 hunters as the last survivors or the burning town of Riverside had retreated to make their last stand by the River...

Whitaker and his friends had reached the river were several boats were leaving the shore line and heading off down the river, they reached the pier as an approaching boat intended to pick them up, suddenly a loud roar from behind them startled them all and all of them including other survivors not yet by the pier turned in horror to see many dark figures with red eyes line the trees further up the park with a large set of crimson omens in the middle of them all. "Holy shit" Gary muttered quietly as he spotter the form of mercy emerging from behind the dark hulk that was Todd, "so Todd how was it being crushed by a bunch of rubble?" he spat angrily causing the monster to growl in anger its eyes glowing deep red. "Enough of this nonsense" Mercy suddenly barked, she stepped forward standing in front of all of the infected and in clear sight of the survivors, "surrender yourselves to the green flu or die miserably and painfully, im giving you an easy choice here" she said stepping forward the infected slowly moving behind her. "Now you listen to me bitch cus im gonna say this once and once only" said Gary stepping ahead of all over survivors, "my name's Gary and today I lost my best friend in the whole entire world...and ill be damned if I let his death be in vain by surrendering to the likes of you, we are survivors of the green flu and we are gonna keep fighting until we are down to the last woman man or even child and you can bet that no one here will be surrendering to you tonight" he said the other survivors slowly raised the weapons as the infected slowly inched closer and closer. "Then I take it you want this to end the hard way" she spat back as the infected began to scream and shout angrily Todd roaring angrily, "SHOOT THAT SON OF A BITCH" Heavy called out and chaos broke out as he began to fire his minigun at mercy who quickly moved out of the way and hid behind the mass of infected that began to charge forward.

The other survivors all began to open fire as they slowly retreated to the dock where a larger boat was waiting for them, "come on get your asses over here and get on im taking you all to Newburg!" the boat captain shouted through his loudspeaker, the survivors all began to retreat Heavy, Gary and Sergeant Marcel held the line from the infected getting to close. Eventually they were the only 3 survivors left, "you 3 get your asses over here right now!" Whitaker shouted as Heavy and Gary began to fall back to the boat while they kept firing, "Sergeant come on!" said Sian shouting as the boat began to move away from the dock very slowly, "JUST GO IVE LOST TO MUCH TO LEAVE THIS TOWN NOW, GO GET TO ECHO AND GET SAVE!" he shouted they all cried out as the boat pulled away from the dock at a very fast speed quickly leaving the sergeant behind. They all fired their weapons in a desperate hope to help the sergeant as he screamed in fury firing magazine after magazine into the infected, they could only watch as the infected closed in on him and Sam was forced to turn away as the infected massed over him and began biting punching and kicking at the poor man who gave his life to help them escape. "God damnit!" Gary cursed smacking the side of the boat as it continued to speed away from the scene of the grizzly tale or Riverside, Whitaker placed a hand on the mans shoulder who turned to face him and weakly smiled, "he did his duty son like a true soldier" and Heavy nodded also patting Gary's back, "at least he's in a better place now" Sian said pulling Sam into a hug as she began to tear up...

Mercy walking over to the bruised and battered from of sergeant Marcel with a devious smile on her face, "your attempt at bravery is most notable but ultimately foolish" she said picking him up by the throat with one hand and holding him close, "shame for you I didn't plan on leaving sweetheart" he said and she went wide eyed as he revealed a grenade from his pocket the pin already pulled. "NOOOOOOOOO... was all she managed before an horrific explosion occurred that rippled the very heart of the mass of infected, no one knew what happened after that, but while the sergeant most certainly perished many screams and cries of pain coming from the pier that as well as an angry savage roar that shook the earth itself. The survivors all looked up solemnly as the explosion went off realising immediately the sergeant had gone out fighting, "god bless that mans soul" said Gary quietly all the other men nodding as well before saying amen, the boat continued on its journey to Newburg leaving behind the town of Riverside, the fires had stopped as groans and grunts as well as crying and heavy breathing were the only sounds heard in Riverside now. As the survivors boat continued on its way it became clear to them that the fight against the green flu was going to be a harder one than they had previously though, but there was only one thing that was certain right now... the town or Riverside had fallen...and the survivors had lost.
