Quinn was glad the day was finally coming to an end, she'd decided that birthdays in school decidedly sucked, especially when her girlfriend was nowhere to be found at lunch, apparently she was working on a project and it had to be completed over lunch otherwise she wouldn't have it ready on time. The blonde found it hard to believe that Rachel could ever leave a project to the last minute, even with Charlie in her life, but apparently that was the case so she'd had to spend the lunch listening to Santana complain about Cheerio's practice, much to her annoyance because she was still mad with her best friend. All she had to do was survive Glee and then she could go home with Rachel, pick up Beth and Charlie and hopefully just veg in front of the TV while getting their cuddle on, that would be the perfect way to spend her birthday as far as she was concerned.
Members of Glee club started to filter into the choir room, chatting away as they took their seats, Quinn eagerly awaiting the arrival of the clubs star as everyone wished her a 'happy birthday' on the way to their seats. She sat up straighter in her seat as Rachel came in whispering with Puck before she caught their eyes met and Rachel flashed her a bright smile.
"Hey you," she greeted as the brunette took the seat beside her, "I missed you at lunch."
"I know, I'm sorry, I just really needed to get this project done."
"Did you?"
"Yep."
"Is that all I'm going to get?" she laughed.
Rachel looked at Quinn slyly, "Yep."
"You know, you're meant to be nice to your girlfriend on her birthday," Quinn teased.
Rachel leant across the seats and pressed a kiss where ear and jaw joined before whispering, "You'll find out how nice I can be on your birthday later."
Quinn didn't get a chance to respond because Mr. Schue came waltzing into the room, "Right guys," he clasped his hands together, "I hope you're all ready for this weeks assignment and I-" he looked at the girl confused, he couldn't remember the last time she'd raised her hand, never mind raised her hand in the middle of him speaking, "yes, Rachel?"
"Mr. Schue, I hope it's ok but I prepared something for today."
Quinn wore a similar expression to Mr. Schue, both were confused, Rachel hadn't had a spur performance in a long time and as far as Quinn was aware she'd had no time at all to put anything together, never mind practice.
"Ok, Rachel," Mr. Schue tried to shake the look of confusion that he knew he was wearing, "the floor is yours."
"Thank you," she stood and nodded over to Puck who stood up and went to retrieve a guitar.
"I know I usually have a whole explanation before launching into a performance," Rachel began, "but this song speaks for itself and I promise," her eyes sought out Quinn, "everything will make sense at the end. Happy birthday, beautiful."
A disgusted 'ugh' came from Finn which resulted in Santana promptly kicking the back of his chair and earning a glare from Mr. Schue.
Puck glanced at Rachel who gave him a subtle nod and he started to play.
Let the bough break, let it come down crashing
Let the sun fade out to a dark sky
I can't say I'd even notice it was absent
'Cause I could live by the light in your eyes
I'll unfold before you
Would have strung together
The very first words of a lifelong love letter
Santana sat up straighter in her chair, paying close attention to the lyrics. She knew now that the songs Rachel sung had a meaning to them and so she listened, trying to decipher the meaning behind them because as sickly sweet as her and Quinn could be, they had never once declared their love via the means of song in Glee club which meant one thing, Rachel was singing with a purpose.
Tell the world that we finally got it all right
I choose
you
I will become yours and you will become mine
At those words Quinn's mind went to her unfinished proposal, her mind already trying to figure out how she could salvage it and finish the question that had been on the tip of her tongue.
I choose
you
I choose
You, yeah
There was a time when I would have believed them
If they told me that you could not come true
Mercedes had missed listening to Rachel sing in Glee club, sure she still participated but it hadn't been the same since things went south. She was still amazed by Rachel and Quinn, never in a million years could she have predicted the unlikely couple and yet they seemed the strongest of all the couples she'd ever known.
Just love's illusion
But then you found me
Even now Rachel could remember the night that Quinn had found her, how utterly distraught and broken she had been. She never thought she'd recover from that, she'd thought she'd always be that way but the blonde had been right, she was just lost and with the blondes help she had found her way again and for that she would be forever truly grateful.
And everything changed
And I believe in something again
My whole heart
Will be yours forever
This is a beautiful start
To a lifelong love letter
Puck smiled knowingly. He was so proud of both Quinn and Rachel, of all they had overcome together, of the way they raised two beautiful little girls that he was humbled to call his daughters. He knew that he would always go wherever they went, they were a family, now and for always and he knew without a shadow of a doubt that they would go the distance because regardless of how they had started out, of their past, they were made to be together.
Tell the world that we finally got it all right
I choose
You
I will become yours and you will become mine
I choose
You
I choose
You
We are not perfect we'll learn from our mistakes
Finn quietly fumed, his face that of thunder. Rachel should be singing that song to him, not Quinn, he was sure of it. The thought of the two of them together made his blood boil but he played nice, because Rachel was bound to realise her mistake eventually and it would be him that she'd come running back to. There was no way the pair of girls would last, they were a mistake, no doubts about it.
And as long as it takes I will prove my love to you
I am not scared of the elements I am underprepared,
But I am willing
And even better
I get to be the other half of you
Rachel looked at Quinn as she sang, slowly making her way over to the girl, willing her to understand what she was saying through song. Willing her to comprehend the love she had for her, that the words that had been said on Saturday resonated with her and would be locked in her mind for as long as she could hold coherent thought.
Tell the world that we finally got it all right
I choose
You, yeah
I will become yours and you will become mine
I choose
You
I choose
You
I choose
You
Rachel stood in front of Quinn, her eyes boring down into her silently as she willed her brain to shut up with the million and one things she wanted to tell her girlfriend so that she could focus on the one important thing she wanted to say, the thing she came here to say. "Whenever you decide to finish the question you were asking on Saturday, that's my answer."
"Marry me," it didn't come out as a question, it came out as a breath, the last two words that never got to part her lips. It didn't matter that she didn't have the ring with her, it didn't matter that they were in Glee club or that they were surrounded by people, all that mattered was Rachel and the fact that she had just said yes through song to the question she never got to finish. Her hands reached up and took hold of Rachel's, "Marry me, Rachel."
Rachel leant down and kissed Quinn deeply, wishing that all the words inside her head could be conveyed through a kiss. They didn't care about the clatter of the chair or the slamming of the door, they didn't care about those waiting to hear a real answer or the ones that looked on slightly confused or the ones that had figured it all out and were happy to be a part of something special.
Quinn pulled back, a cheshire cat grin on her face, "So that's a yes?"
Rachel slapped at her shoulder lightly, "Yes, you idiot."
"You know, it's not nice to call your fiancee an idiot, especially on her birthday," the blonde teased.
"Yes, well..." she leaned forward and whispered in an ear, "you'll see how nice I can be later."
"Ok!" Santana interrupted, "I forgive you."
Quinn rolled her eyes, of course her best friend would have something to say about all of this, though to be fair she'd never intended on proposing in the middle of Glee, "You forgive me? For what exactly?"
"For giving me a dead arm on Saturday," the Latina stated simply.
"You damn well deserved that."
"Oh God," Rachel groaned, "I've just agreed to a lifetime of this."
"Too late to back out now, Berry," Santana smirked, "As for you, Q, how the hell was I supposed to know you were popping the question and not popping Berry?"
"I hate you."
"Right back at ya, blondie."
Rachel settled herself on Quinn's lap, wrapping her arms around the blondes neck, there was only one way she knew to stop the arguing between Santana and Quinn, "Quinn?"
"Yeah, Rach?" She turned her head to face the diva only to have her lips silenced in an eager kiss.
"Oh for fucks sake, Mr. Schue, can we please send the lust bunnies home?"
Author's note: You almost didn't get this because I'm useless and didn't remember till I was about to get into bed and then I remembered that I promised you all this so here you go. Gonna try not to make this an epic tale lol I know my chapters are short, some shorter than others but if you had to deal with my brain and all the voices you'd understand why. Writing seems to be slowing down, I'm struggling at the moment guys (health crap sucks!) erm...how'd you feel about a chapter that doesn't really feature the girls (big or little) at all? Toying with something in my brain and can't quite make my mind up about it. Erm...I think that's it. Oh the song is I Choose You by Sara Bareilles and I swear the lyrics are different from what's in the chapter but they're what I found online even though when I listen to the song I hear something slightly different. Shutting up now.
