"I need to see him." Caroline said a few moments after Klaus had relayed to her the story of how she had been dressed in his shirt with a smug expression on his face.
Caroline had apparently passed out after everyone had left the room and being the 'gentleman', Klaus had replaced her own shirt with one of his. She supposed it was better than waking up in just her bra.
She was already stepping around Klaus and walking towards the door, ignoring the confused look he was sending her.
"See who?" Klaus asked as he turned to follow her and Caroline stopped just a couple of meters from the door.
"Henrik." she sighed as she watched him intently, waiting for his reaction to her revelation. She had wanted to eat his son just minutes earlier and now she was going to see him again. Caroline expected anger or concern, but definitely not the emotions that seemed to flicker through his eyes. He almost looked… nervous?
"Perhaps you should wait until he is less" traumatized. The word never left Klaus' tongue as he saw the still immense guilt present in Caroline's eyes. "Until he is more calm."
"No. He need to know now that I never meant to scare him and that I won't hurt him. The longer I wait, the more afraid he'll become of me." Caroline said determinedly, ignoring how Klaus seemed to choose his words carefully for her sake.
Before Klaus could object further, Caroline turned her back to him and strode towards the door. A surprised yelp escaped her as she walked directly into an invisible wall and she lost her balance, closing her eyes as she waited her meeting with the floor. Her fall was stopped by an arm around her waist and she opened her eyes to find Klaus look down at her with an amused gleam in his eyes.
Caroline froze for a moment, stunned by not only their closeness but also by what had just happened. She was on her feet but reclined backwards in Klaus' arms as if they had been dancing and he had dipped her. Caroline blinked several times in confusion before she grabbed Klaus' shoulder and quickly pulled herself out of his embrace.
"What the hell?" Caroline muttered to herself as she stepped past Klaus and close to the doorway once more. Carefully, she stretched out her hand and frowned when she was unable to reach out into the hall.
She then tried to push against the invisible barrier and when nothing happened she pressed all of her weight against it. Caroline felt herself growing frustrated and hammered on the wall with a closed fist before giving up and turning to look back at Klaus.
"Who did… It was you, wasn't it?" Caroline said with a suspicious gaze and the hybrid sent her an almost nervous smile.
"I am many things, love, but a warlock isn't one of them." Klaus replied as he placed his hands behind his back and casually took a step closer to her.
"You know what I mean."
"If it's any consolation, they used my idea against me as well." Klaus told her, unable to hide the vindictive tone in his voice. Caroline's eyes widened slightly as she understood the complications and then calmed a hand through her curls as she started pacing in front of him.
"I'm trapped in here with you? Well, that's just fucking great." Caroline exclaimed as she gestured wildly with her hands, ignoring the look of surprise in Klaus' eyes when he heard her foul language.
"You wound me." he said with feigned sadness and placed a hand over his heart. Caroline just rolled her eyes as she stopped moving and crossed her arms in front of her. Klaus was gladly to see the fire return to the blonde's eyes even though it was him it was directed at.
"I really don't care." the baby vampire informed him with a small tilt of her head and Klaus willed himself not to smile. This was the Caroline he knew and adored. And after everything that had happened for the last 24 hours, he was glad to have her back.
"I take it that you're still angry with me?" Klaus inquired calmly. Now that Caroline's guilt over Henrik was in the background, she could go back to being angry with him for his accusations. The accusations that had led to her entrapment in the King of New Orleans' bedroom.
"Angry doesn't even cover it." Caroline told him with a scoff before she stepped forward with a pointed finger. "You accused me of doing the one thing I would rather die before doing. I would never hurt a child like that, let alone kidnap one!"
"I'm sorry."
"No, you listen to me! I don't car-" Caroline yelled at him, stilling when she realized what he had said. "What?"
"I am sorry for what I said, Caroline." Klaus told her as he took a step closer once more and the sincere look in his eyes made Caroline lose her breath for a moment. "I very much regret it."
"Wait, are you… you're apologizing?" the blonde asked with a confused expression on her face and Klaus momentarily closed his eyes, inwardly cursing himself. How could he ever earn her forgiveness if she wouldn't even believe his apology?
"Don't get used to it." a female voice drawled from the hall and Caroline spun around to meet the eyes of the other blonde in the residence.
"Rebekah." Klaus said with a small growl, irritated by her interruption and the fact she had caught him in such a vulnerable moment.
"I heard the commotion and thought I would see how the patient was doing." Rebekah said as she eyed Caroline curiously while ignoring her brother's glare.
"She's fine." Klaus said before Caroline could reply herself, eager to be gone with his sister so he could continue his conversation with the other blonde. Just as Rebekah had ignored him, Klaus ignored the irritated look from Caroline as she turned her eyes towards him.
"Do you mean before or after she tried to eat my nephew?" Rebekah asked casually with an adorning smirk on her lips and a small tilt of her head.
"How is he?" Caroline quickly asked before an outright war broke out between the Original siblings.
"White as a sheet and trembling." the Original informed her and Caroline noticed the anger in her voice, which she couldn't blame her for.
"I'm so, so sorry." the blonde vampire apologized with a heartfelt look in her eyes and Rebekah seemed to soften just the tiniest bit.
"Stop fretting, Caroline. He'll be over it in a couple of hours. And much like a lot of other things, frowning really doesn't become you." Rebekah told her with a rolled of her eyes and frowned herself when a bubbly laughter suddenly escaped Caroline.
"What?" the Original asked confusedly and shot her brother a questioning glance to which he could only shrug.
"Thank you." Caroline then said with a grateful smile and Rebekah's frown deepened.
"For insulting you?" Rebekah questioned before looking at her brother once more. "I think she's lost it, Nik."
"If that was an insult then you're really losing your touch, Rebekah." Caroline told her with a laugh and Rebekah lifted her eyebrows in annoyance.
"I just wanted to thank you for saving me." the blonde vampire then said with a small sigh and she noticed how a smile seemed to tuck the corner of Rebekah's mouth.
"I didn't do it for you." Rebekah told her with a shrug as she quickly glanced at her brother and Caroline smiled understandingly.
"But you still did despite of saying you never wanted to play nurse for me again." Caroline replied teasingly and Rebekah rolled her eyes.
"Don't take it personally."
"If you say so." Caroline said with a small smile on her lips and she could almost feel the Original blonde's conflict between taking Caroline's gratitude and keeping up the bitchy façade.
"It's a nice shirt you're wearing." Rebekah then told her with a smirk on her lips as her bright blue eyes glided over Caroline's upper body, recognizing her brother's Henley.
"I didn't really have a say in it. Especially since my own was torn apart." Caroline replied with an annoyed voice as she glared at Rebekah, who had been the one to rip it off her. She didn't want to be in some stupid war with the other blonde, but she could tell the niceness was irking Rebekah. Caroline couldn't help but feel pity for the girl, who probably hadn't had many girlfriends during the last millennium.
"I'm so going to regret this…" Rebekah spoke with a small sigh and Caroline watched her with curiosity as she waited for the Original to continue. "I probably have some clothes you could borrow."
"I would love that." Caroline quickly told her with a bright smile and Rebekah almost rolled her eyes once more.
"Sure you would." Rebekah replied haughtily before she sent Caroline a surrendering smile. "Give me a moment."
"Thank you!" Caroline called as Rebekah turned on her heel and moved down the hall towards her own room. Caroline was still wearing a smile as she turned around and saw Klaus looking at her with an almost confused expression on his face, having watched Caroline and his sister interact.
"What?" Caroline asked tiredly as she crossed her arms in front of her.
"You and my sister are being nice to each other. I was just wondering when the world is going to end." Klaus said teasingly, secretly happy that the two were finally getting along, somewhat.
"Probably the same time you start apologizing to people." Caroline retorted in an equally teasing manner and the smile on Klaus' face dropped into a serious expression.
"I mean it, Caroline."
"I know." she said with a small sigh as she let her arms fall down her sides. Caroline almost stopped herself from continuing when she saw the relieved look on Klaus' face, but there was more that needed to be said. "But I can't forgive you. Not yet."
"Is that so?" Klaus asked with a detached voice and Caroline noticed the flash of annoyance that crossed his features.
"There are two things you need to do first." Caroline explained with a determined look in her eyes.
"I'm not letting you out of here until you're fully healed, love." the hybrid quickly told her with a stern voice and Caroline couldn't help but scowl at him.
"Will you shut up for a moment and stop making me angry?" Caroline all but hissed at him and Klaus frowned at her tone. She then took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment in an attempt to keep her calm.
"I need you to accept my apology." she then explained in a soft voice and Klaus' lips parted slightly in surprise.
"Your apology?" he repeated uncertainly and Caroline took another deep breath before replying.
"I'm sorry for not telling you what was happening. I should have told you about Pheodora, who is behind all of this with Tyler. I had no idea about Tyler, but you still needed to know. Then maybe they wouldn't have been able to take Henrik." Caroline started as she forced herself to meet Klaus' gaze.
"But I needed to sort this out on my own. I thought I could prevent this stupid war or whatever this is. I should have known better. So I'm sorry for putting my pride and selfishness over the life of your son and even my own friends." she then explained, finishing with a small sigh. With each word she felt more ashamed of herself and she blinked furiously when tears threatened to water her eyes.
"Selfishness?" Klaus asked confusedly and Caroline took herself in fiddling nervously with the arm of the shirt she was wearing.
"I knew neither you nor Henrik, but I was all but ready to rid a child of his father because of some hypothetical danger. I still don't know why I ever agreed to help Pheodora." Caroline told him with a shake of her head as she finally broke their eye contact and looked to the floor.
Her head snapped upwards when she suddenly felt Klaus' calloused fingers brush over her hand and she watched as he encased it with his. Caroline knew she was still supposed to be mad since he hadn't earned her forgiveness yet, but she found it exceedingly difficult not to lean into his touch as he reached out and brushed a stray curl from her face.
"I accept your apology." he finally told her as he made sure to catch her eyes once more and Caroline couldn't stop the smile that spread on her lips.
"Good." she nodded and then gave his hand a short squeeze before she slowly pulled her own hand away. Caroline forced herself not to flex her fingers as she found herself missing his touch.
Freaking hybrid!
"And the second thing is?" Klaus inquired as he let Caroline create a little more space between them.
"I want you to show me what I have forgotten about you and your family." she said with a resolutely voice and Klaus raised a questioning brow, not quite sure what Caroline was on about.
"Show you?"
"Remember what Bonnie told us about some link between us?" the blonde asked eagerly and Klaus almost smiled until he realized what that meant.
"You want to use that?" he replied questioningly with a sceptic look in his eyes and Caroline nodded with new found excitement. Klaus was less certain about the brilliance of Caroline's idea since he never in his thousand years on Earth had let someone inside his head.
"You will let me see inside your head." Klaus stated monotonously and Caroline could suddenly sense his hesitation.
"You will see what I let you see and I will see what you let me see. Nothing more." Caroline tried to reassure him. She didn't know how this was going to work exactly but she didn't want to go picking in Klaus' brain and find things he'd rather hide. She had a feeling that some memories was not for sore eyes.
"Which means we have to trust each other on that." she finished pointedly, knowing that whatever trust there actually were between them was very fragile for the time being. She didn't trust that he wouldn't find some new thing to blame her for and he didn't trust that she wouldn't leave as soon she knew about their past.
"And how do you suppose we do this, love?" Klaus asked warily but the curiosity now seemed to shine from his eyes.
"Well, maybe we could… Or not. What about-? No, that's just weird. There's also the option that… I don't know." Caroline rambled as her thoughts jumped from one idea to another faster than she could follow herself. Klaus watched her with an amused smile and Caroline felt a blush on her cheeks as she realized she had been speaking out loud.
"You should be used to that by now." Rebekah's voice came from the hall once again and Caroline rolled her eyes as she turned her head to look at the other woman.
With her Rebekah had a small tote bag and over her arm hung a black dress. It looked simple with thin spaghetti straps and no waistline.
"I found this in my closet. Do with it as you please." Rebekah then continued as she handed Caroline the dress. The price tag was still on it and even Rebekah looked at it as if she had no idea how it had ended up among her clothes.
"Thank you." Caroline told her with a sincere smile and the Original blonde fought one of her own.
"And I thought you would want to shower, so I brought you this as well." Rebekah said as she reached through the invisible barrier to give Caroline the tote bag.
"That's really nice of you." Caroline said with a small frown and was unable to keep the small hint of suspicion from her voice. She didn't remember her past with Rebekah, but from what she had experienced the last couple of days, this didn't seem normal.
"Relax, Caroline. It's not poisoned and it doesn't bite." Rebekah told her with a roll of her eyes. She then turned on her heel to leave as she muttered something about ungratefulness under her breath.
"Bekah!" Klaus suddenly called out and his sister stepped backwards so she stood in the door way once again. "Would you mind fetching the Bennett witch for me, sweetheart?"
"Sure." Rebekah replied with a slightly irritated sigh before she left for good.
"First of all, her name is Bonnie and secondly, you don't fetch people." Caroline scolded him as she placed the dress and bag on Klaus' bed.
"My apologies, love." Klaus said but he didn't seem sorry at all as he wore a familiar smirk.
"Is there somewhere I can take a shower and change?" Caroline then asked after a short moment of silence and she willed herself not to think about how she would probably have to be naked within near proximity of Klaus. Of course, there would be a closed door between them, but it still seemed very intimate.
"You can use the bathroom through that door. There should be towels in there as well." Klaus informed her casually as he gestured towards a closed door.
Caroline nodded and sent him a thankful smile as she picked up her things from the bed and brushed past Klaus towards the door. She let out a small breath air she didn't knew she had been holding as she entered the large bathroom and put down the things in her hands.
There was a sharp intake of breath as she met her own eyes in the mirror and she slowly reached up to touch the skin of her face with a shaky hand.
Her skin was more pale than usual with a grey tint and dark circles were present under her eyes, making it look like they had sunk in. She had no make-up on, which made her look even more dead, and she wondered how Rebekah had managed not to comment on her appearance.
"Are you okay?" a tentative voice came from behind her and Caroline removed her gaze from her own face to look at Klaus through the mirror. She hadn't closed the door to the bathroom yet and Klaus was now standing in the door way, looking at her worriedly.
"Yeah, I was just… surprised. Or actually slightly horrified by my own reflection." Caroline told him with a small laugh as he calmly moved to stand beside her.
"You need more blood, Caroline." Klaus said as he reached out and placed a hand against her cheek, turning her head to look at him directly instead of through the mirror. Caroline held back a sigh as his thumb brushed over her cheekbone once before his hand dropped back to his side.
"I suspect you need all of your strength for what we are about to do." he continued and Caroline watched him for a long moment before she finally nodded. Perhaps, starving herself wasn't the right answer for now despite the guilt she still felt.
"Care?! Where are you?" a familiar voice suddenly called from outside the room and Caroline's face lit up in a smile before she ran out to greet her friend.
"Hi Bonnie." she said with a soft voice as she stepped as close to the door as possible. She was surprised when Bonnie's arms suddenly were around her and Caroline realized that Bonnie had stepped over the invisible barrier.
"I'm so glad you're okay. I thought we were gonna lose you." Bonnie muttered into Caroline's hair as she squeezed the blonde in a tight embrace.
"I'm not so easy to kill, you know." Caroline told her with a small laugh and Bonnie was smiling as well, when she took a step back and out in the hallway.
"So, Rebekah said you needed me?" Bonnie asked with a curious expression on her face and Caroline shifted slightly on her feet, not sure how Bonnie would take her idea.
"That connection you talked about Klaus and I had, you know with the mind thing. Do you know how that works?" Caroline asked carefully and she could feel Klaus appear behind her.
"I'm not sure." Bonnie said with a frown as she looked between her best friend and the hybrid. "Why?"
"Well, we kind of want to try it." Caroline admitted with her eyes almost squeezed shut as if she was actually expecting Bonnie go into a rage.
"I know you might say it's a bad idea or think it's weird, but I need to know, Bon. I need to remember what I've forgotten. Now that I know there's something missing from my memories, it's driving me insane. I have to know." the blonde pleaded before her friend could even open her mouth to speak.
Bonnie was silent for a long moment as she looked at Caroline with a thoughtful expression. The witch casted a few glances at Klaus before her green eyes returned to Caroline, who wore a puppy dog face Bonnie found hard to resist.
"This could be painful, you know?" Bonnie told her friend with a concerned look in her eyes. "Like with the flashbacks."
"I'll take that chance." Caroline assured her eagerly and Bonnie's eyes turned to Klaus, who looked as unhappy with that prospect as she did herself. But Caroline seemed determined to go through with it and Bonnie doubted they could stop her.
"I don't know, Care. You look too tired to do it now." Bonnie objected, but Caroline just shook her head.
"I just need more blood." the blonde explained and Bonnie seemed to run out of arguments.
"All I know about this connection is what I heard from the witches on the Other Side. But they didn't really talk much about how you could use it. My best guess would be physical contact, like holding hands or something.
"Later, you might be able to do it without though. Then it's all about keeping an open mind. Like literally. You have to let the other person in, which probably is going to be the hardest part; all things considered." Bonnie explained slowly as she more or less came up with it as she spoke.
Caroline gave her a short nod and then turned around to look at Klaus as if she needed to check that he understood as well. He didn't give her any sort of visible confirmation, but the concerned look in his eyes was proof enough.
"Perhaps we should get started then, love?" Klaus asked with a resigned voice and Caroline tried to send him a reassuring smile that didn't quite seem to work.
"Thank you." Caroline told Bonnie with a warm voice instead of answering Klaus and the witch gave her a smile in return. "By the way, do you know how Henrik is?"
"He will be fine, Care. Don't worry." Bonnie told her friends insistently, but Caroline still felt worried. "Stefan is feeding him ice-cream and I think I heard Rebekah promise him another puppy."
"Fantastic." Klaus grumbled behind them and Caroline was surprised to hear the witch laugh at him.
"I'll leave you to it then." Bonnie then said with a hesitant smile and looked between the two of them once more. "Good luck."
The bedroom was silent after Bonnie's departure and Caroline slowly turned to look at Klaus, who seemed far away in his own thoughts. It took him a few moments to notice Caroline's staring but once again he didn't respond to her smile.
She then realized he was nervous. Soon Caroline would know all the things that had happened that made her hate Klaus the first time around. Would she be able to forgive him as she apparently had before? Or would they go back to square one, where she couldn't stand him?
"You should take that shower, love. I'll get you some more blood in the meantime." he told her with a detached voice and Caroline quickly disappeared into the bathroom, closing the door behind her.
She emptied the tote bag Rebekah had brought, while she did her best to avoid her own reflection, and couldn't help but smile a little when she saw there also was a new set of underwear. The price tag was still on like with the dress and Caroline wondered for a moment if Rebekah had gone on a speed-shopping trip.
But the Original had only been gone for less than five minutes so Caroline quickly discarded that idea and frowned at Rebekah's over-consuming instead. She kept herself occupied with thoughts about how much unused clothes Rebekah might have in her closet as she undressed and got into the shower.
Caroline let out a content sigh as the warm water ran down her body and she would have stood there for several minutes, had she not been eager to get back her memories from Klaus. She quickly ran a hair brush from Rebekah's bag trough her wet filtered curls and didn't bother to do anything else to it.
The silk underwear was plain and black, and the bra had removable straps, which Caroline took use of. Rebekah's black dress hung loosely on Caroline's body like it was meant to and reached just above her knees. Her shoulders felt a little bare because of the thin straps and her wet hair was cold against the naked skin, but other than that it seemed as if Rebekah had decided to play nice again and find her some proper clothing.
As she got dressed Caroline heard muffled voices from the bedroom, but she didn't bother listening closer. She looked at the included mascara for a long moment, wondering if she should just go without, but decided on wearing some as it might make her look less sick and dead-ish. Maybe it would stop everyone from worrying so much about her.
Klaus was alone in the room as Caroline silently excited the bathroom and closed the door behind her. For a moment she felt like a deer in the headlights when Klaus suddenly turned around to look at her. As his eyes swept over her Caroline realized how strange it was to be in his bedroom, wearing something she normally would wear for a day at home. And yet, she felt oddly comfortable in the casual dress and bare feet.
"Elijah found some B+ for you." Klaus told her after a long pregnant silence and Caroline stepped forward with a thankful smile, taking the two blood bags from the hybrid's hands.
"Thanks." she replied and felt how veins began appearing under her eyes as the hunger hit her hard once more. She had become an expert in ignoring it, but the aching in her gums made it impossible this time.
Just like the first two he had given her, the blood bags were emptied in less than 30 seconds and there was a dark look in Klaus' eyes that made a shiver travel down her spine, when she looked up.
"Okay, I'm ready." Caroline said determinedly and felt strangely happy, when Klaus finally smiled at her. "So how do we do this?"
"This was your idea, sweetheart. You decide."
Caroline glanced around the room for a long moment before she moved over to the bed and sat in the middle. She crossed her legs in front of her, letting the dress fall in between and tried to ignore how it crept up her thighs. Caroline then patted the space in front of her as she looked at Klaus, who was yet to move.
He seemed a little reluctant with her idea, but finally seemed to give up with a small sigh. Caroline's teeth dug into her lower lip as she tried to hold back a smile and Klaus watched her with a raised eyebrow as he mirrored her position.
"Sorry." she finally burst out laughing and a stony expression set on Klaus' face. "It's just you're supposed to be 'the big bad' and right now it looks as if you're about to meditate. It's very zen of you. Maybe you should try it for real some time. It would probably be good for your temper."
"I'll keep that in mind." he told in a dry voice and Caroline folded her lips inwards to keep herself from laughing more. "What now, love?"
After a moment of contemplation, Caroline lifted her right hand as she rested the elbow on her knee and motioned for Klaus to do the same with his left hand. Their hands were flat as she pressed them together and she didn't give herself time to hesitate before she entwined their fingers.
"Physical contact: check. I guess the next thing actually is going to be like meditating." Caroline said with a small frown and then took a deep breath before closing her eyes. She felt with an irritated sigh that Klaus still seemed to be staring at her and she opened one eye to glare at him, making him smile amusedly.
"And then we just open our minds." Caroline said with a light voice, when Klaus had closed his eyes as well.
Caroline took silent deep breaths as she tried to empty her head of thoughts and hesitantly reached out. She swallowed a gasp when a warm sensation slowly spread through her body and it felt as if not only their hands were touching, but their minds as well.
"I think it's working." Caroline whispered as if afraid to break the connection and took a shaky breath when she heard Klaus hum in agreement.
"Are you ready?" he asked silently and Caroline could suddenly feel his nervousness as if it was her own.
"Yes."
Caroline squeezed his hand reassuringly and a gasp escaped her when she finally found herself in a place she had never been before.
She is in the woods. Which woods she don't know and it is dark. She is following a male figure and notices from the corner of her eye that a smaller figure is following the man as well. There is a growl. Then another. Soon it turns into howls and Caroline is overwhelmed with both fear and excitement.
"Nik!" a young boy suddenly calls out frightened.
The wolves are everywhere. Niklaus screams as the wolves run past him and attack Henrik.
The body of a young boy lies mutilated on the ground. They are all crying.
Caroline felt her own eyes water, but soon the scene shifted.
A sword is driven through Rebekah's heart before Mikael turns to his stepson as well. Caroline feel an overwhelming fear and gasps in horror as Klaus fall dead to the ground.
They are waking up. Blood drenches the front of their clothing. Mikael enters with a crying girl and order them to drink. Klaus tries to stop his little sister, but fails.
Their skin burns as they walk in the sun, vervain is like poison and they burn down the great white oak tree.
Klaus kills a girl in hunger and soon his bones are breaking. Caroline watch with horror as Klaus is tied up, begging his brother to free him as their mother bind his wolf side to the moon stone.
She is standing in a room filled with people in medieval dresses. Elijah is watching from the side as Klaus flirts with Katerina Petrova.
The brothers are talking about the sacrifice and Elijah wants to save the doppelgänger. Klaus tells him that love is weakness.
Caroline felt her eyes water once more.
Klaus is in a rage. Katerina has escaped and turned herself into a vampire.
He is dressed in his usual twenty-first century attire and Caroline watches as he speaks with his estranged brother on the phone, who has found the human doppelgänger and the moonstone. He then calls Isobel Flemming and asks her to burn in the sun.
He is in Mystic Falls and Caroline watches in confusion as he occupies the body of Alaric Saltzman. He goes to their decade dance and is attacked by Bonnie, who dies in the process. Katherine is held captive in the history teacher's apartment.
Klaus has his vampire and his wolf; Caroline and Tyler. But he loses them when Damon decides to interfere, offering himself to be a sacrifice. But he is useless and dying from a werewolf bite.
He takes Jules and Jenna instead. He rips out the werewolf's heart and stakes the newly-turned vampire.
Caroline almost screamed as she watched her surrogate big sister get staked by Klaus. She could feel her body shaking, but she didn't let go of the murderer in front of her.
She feels nauseated as she watches Klaus drain the life out of Elena.
Caroline feels both her own and Klaus' shock when Bonnie and Elijah suddenly appear, ready to take him out. She feels a strange relief when Elijah betrays her friends and leaves with Klaus.
They are in Alaric's apartment again and Caroline feels her blood boil as she watches Klaus dagger his brother. Stefan is there and she wishes that she could stop him as he becomes the Ripper for a cure for Damon.
Klaus and Stefan are in the mountains and Caroline can only watch as Klaus' attempt to make hybrids goes wrong and he has to kill the rabid werewolves.
They go to Chicago and he undaggers Rebekah to find a necklace.
They are back in Mystic Falls High and Klaus quickly finds that the dead doppelgänger is not so dead after all. They are in the gym as Rebekah enters with Tyler. A crack resounds through the room and Tyler is dead on the floor with a broken neck.
Caroline couldn't hold back the small whimper that fell from her lips as she watched her ex-boyfriend die. She knew he would 'survive', but watching it happen was chilling.
Their first meeting is brief. Caroline is terrified of the so-called monster in front of her as she struggles against Rebekah's hold, asking Tyler not to do as Klaus asks him. Klaus barely notices her, only telling her that it is for his own good, love.
The second time he sees her is at the school dance, which he 'took' from her. He threatens her life and calls her pretty in the same sentence and Caroline watches herself with curiosity. Since when did she have a glow?
The next moment the horrific sight of Klaus' burning father comes into view and Caroline feel a strange triumphant feeling overwhelm her.
Was this it? Him calling her pretty. Was this the beginning?
No. Because this is.
She watches as he orders Tyler to bite her and then takes it back. Stefan has taken his siblings and Klaus is testing Tyler's sire bond.
Caroline holds back her tears as Tyler begs Klaus to heal her after the newly-turned hybrid has bitten her, but can't stop the gasp that leaves her mouth when she follows Klaus to her house and see herself lying there on her bed; half-dead.
The whole of Caroline's body tensed when she suddenly found herself remembering this on her own. How she had healed from this had for the last years been another mystery she never thought about, but she could suddenly recall every word and motion vividly.
And his blood. She had never tasted anything like it and was sure she never would again. With small shiver Caroline realized that this not only Klaus' beginning with her, but also her beginning with him.
A familiar headache started in her frontal lope as her own memories slowly started to return, but unlike the other times it wasn't unbearable and she managed to take a calming breath. Caroline felt Klaus' fingers tighten around hers as her memories blended with his and they both found themselves as spectators.
They watch as Klaus gives her the choice to live and die and she can feel Klaus' fascination with the blonde and stubborn baby vampire grow. He is impressed by her strong will and her seemingly fearlessness as the evil hybrids looms over her dying form.
So he opens up to her, not sure how much is a lie and how much is truth, and tells her a secret. Or two. And she listens. And they can both feel her resolve as she begs him not to let her die. For some odd reason, Klaus doesn't like it when she begs for her life.
Caroline almost sighs with longing as she watches Klaus heal her and leave the room as she falls asleep. He returns only an hour later and, unbeknownst to the house's residences, leaves a present in her room. The bracelet.
He stays a full minute to study her as she sleeps.
Caroline is suddenly in a new room, standing by a dinner table as Damon leads his brother from the room and Elijah appears in his stead. Soon they are surrounded by Klaus' siblings and she watches with wide eyes as they all stab him with the silver daggers.
She feels a certain fear as Esther suddenly appears and have a sudden need to reach out for Klaus, to comfort him, as he asks for his mother's intentions.
Before she has the chance to do so, Caroline is watching Klaus order a hybrid to deliver a package at her doorstep.
Caroline's memories take over and she remembers her confusion as the doorbell rings but no one is outside. Instead she finds a package and invitation for a ball. Klaus watches as she reads his request for a dance with a frown and the stunned look on her face as she opens the package.
They are at the ball and Caroline feels Klaus' awe as she watches herself make an entry in the blue dress he has given her.
It suddenly hit her that this was also the mystery dress she found in her closet when she prepared to leave Mystic Falls all those years ago.
They dance. Caroline isn't very friendly to him, but Klaus doesn't seem to mind. He enjoys her fire.
She is standing by a horse outside. The horse he once drew for her. Caroline is annoyed with him. And confused.
"I fancy you. Is that so hard to believe?"
Yes.
For a moment she wasn't sure if she had spoken the word only in her mind, but the small twinge in her stomach revealed to her that she still meant it.
Why her?
Damon had told them about Tatia. Shouldn't he be running around after Elena? Like Damon, Stefan and even Elijah were at that moment. She knew he had wanted her blood more than the doppelgänger herself, but that didn't make it less confusing as to why he had been chasing her. Still was.
Why her?
"You're beautiful, you're strong, you're full of light. I enjoy you."
He wants to show her the world. Paris. Rome. Tokyo. But she laughs and they fight. He tells her to leave.
Caroline felt the old anger from that night resurface and it slowly intensified as she briefly thought about the other things he had shown her so far. The other things she now remembered about their past.
She watches him draw her and the horse on a piece of parchment with slight curiosity and Klaus watch her arrive home to find it. She keeps it.
They need Elena back so she plays the blonde distraction. She dresses up to the nines and lures him away from his brother.
"Take a chance, Caroline. Talk to me. Come on, get to know me. I dare you."
He says it with a smirk.
Caroline rolled her eyes inwardly and she felt Klaus' tension ease up the slightest at the memory.
"I'm too smart to be seduced by you."
"That's why I like you."
She almost cursed herself as the memory of feeling flattered by his attention fluttered in her stomach and without opening her eyes, Caroline just knew that Klaus was wearing that ridiculous smirk on his lips. Because he could sense her reluctant feelings. But he had wanted to know everything about her. No one had so before.
But then the situation changes and Caroline feels his anger in more than one way as he grabs her arm. He's been tricked by the baby vampire and ignores the hurt feeling in his chest.
They are in the woods. Caroline watches as Esther and Finn stands in a circle and the Original Witch talks about the death of her children. They disappear into nowhere as the Bennett blood line is broken.
She shows him glimpses of her time with Bonnie's mother and Klaus hesitantly lets her watch as his family crumbles once again. His brothers run each their way, but Rebekah stays as she always have.
They find Finn and force him back. Rebekah kidnaps Damon ad Klaus threatens Bonnie with hurting Jeremy if she doesn't cooperate.
The link between the siblings is severed minutes before Finn is killed. Caroline is spending time with her father's killer and the Original siblings barely bat an eye at the news of their brother's death. There's no real sorrow, only anger.
Alaric is killing people and Esther takes over Rebekah's body. She convinces Klaus to go to the decade dance because Caroline is there. He goes.
Tyler is back from breaking his sire bond and Caroline is happy. Klaus watches as Caroline is unable to explain to her boyfriend why Klaus' drawing is still in her possession. She still doesn't throw it away.
They are dancing. She's in a red dress and Klaus in a white suit. They look like something out of a history book.
Caroline remembered the small surge of nervousness when he told her that he was leaving town. Was he taking her with him then? To see the world? Rome, Paris, Tokyo.
No. She isn't ready and Caroline isn't sure that she'll ever be.
He offers her the world again. Says that a small town life will never be enough for her. He's right, of course, but Caroline only scoffs at him. Why does she feel guilty at the hurt look on his face?
She convinces Tyler that she loves him, but it doesn't feel the same anymore.
Alaric is turned by Esther but wishes to die.
Caroline felt a moment of embarrassment when she remembered the small sense of relief when she realized that she wouldn't have to look at her father's killer every day.
It was confusing when their memories suddenly started to intertwine, jumping back and forth between different scenes and feelings. But after a moment it started making sense in an odd way.
Caroline is at the school with Rebekah. They are being nice to each other. Alaric attacks them and Rebekah gets away.
Klaus is trying to get in to Elena's house. He wants his doppelgänger with him. She's already gone.
Caroline's skin burns and every fiber of her being is aching. Her father's killer looks at her with a cold stare. She's surprised when Elena comes. She didn't think the Salvatores would the doppelgänger put herself at risk for Caroline. She isn't important enough.
He is threatening to tear down the house. In the end he decides to burn it. Stefan comes out and tells him about Alaric. Klaus really doesn't care. He has taken Elena. And Caroline.
And that was enough to make Klaus stop. That was enough to make him risk his own life.
Alaric wants Elena to kill her. Wants her to pay for something she couldn't help. Hasn't she paid enough?
Bonnie hated her, Matt hated her and her own mother wouldn't even look at her. Did she really deserve this much suffering?
Why her?
Klaus is standing outside the school with the Salvatores. He is on edge and Caroline can sense his self-loathing as he worries about the blonde baby vampire inside.
Caroline is free so she runs.
Klaus can hear her heavy breathing. He can almost smell and taste her fear. He feels an unfamiliar surge of relief when he finds her. He doesn't want to let go of her, but he needs her to be safe.
"Thank you."
His undead heart skips a beat and then he's gone.
They can't kill Alaric so he takes Elena. Caroline watches with horror as he drains the doppelgänger of blood.
Her earlier gratitude was suddenly gone.
Tyler appears. Klaus knows he is unsired but leaves the room. It is a test. Tyler fails.
Suddenly Damon and Stefan are there. Conflicted feelings fill Caroline as she watches Klaus desiccate with wide eyes until darkness takes over.
All of her memories were back and Caroline wasn't sure she would be able to watch more of what had happened between them. All that had happened in Mystic Falls was once again branded into her mind; never to be forgotten. And her time in New Orleans and Spain was back as well. Even Silas had come back to haunt her.
She slowly pulled her hand from Klaus' and ignored how she immediately missed the connection between them. It seemed to linger between them for a moment but as Caroline's eyes shot open it vanished completely.
Klaus was already looking at her with regarding blue eyes and Caroline inwardly cursed herself as she absentmindedly scooted away from him. For a moment it looked as if he was going to reach for her and Caroline wasn't sure if she would let him.
"You're crying, love." he told her in a low voice and it almost seemed as if he was afraid that she would break.
"Yeah." Caroline almost laughed as wiped her wet cheeks with the back of her hand. Her eyes darted around the room for a moment as she was unable to look at him, but with a small sigh her eyes met his once more.
"I remember."
"How much?" Klaus asked warily as he only knew about the memories she had shown him returning.
"Everything."
A/N: Dum dum dum dummm... So it finally happened. Caroline remembers everything! How do you think she'll react?
I hope the whole skipping through memories wasn't too much. Caroline just needed to know why Klaus was even after Elena in the first place and then I needed at least my favourite Klaroline scene to be in there, so I had to include the whole Alaric thing as well.
Yup, you guessed it. "It's me, you're safe" is my fave Klaroline scene. It's a bit unconventional (is that even how you spell that word) perhaps, but it just makes my heart leap everytime. It's just so completely and heartbreakingly sincere. Like he needs her to be safe because he can't concentrate on his own plan if she's not. And she genuinely thanks him. And it's beautiful and I feel like crying now and life is cruel. Wait, no. Julie Plague is cruel. Life is kind of awesome. But screw you, Plague!
Sorry about the rant... Hope you liked the chapter;) Tell me what you think!
