Chapter 35: Amnesia
Lilly wandered through the crowd looking for Miles. It was getting late and they had to get home soon, otherwise they would get in trouble. She spotted Lucas and Artie sitting together.
A small silver of hurt flashed through her mind. No, she wasn't hurt. Her and Artie ended on good terms. They were friends. Lucas deserved to be happy. She was happy for them, really.
Lilly quickly made her way over to the pair. Lucas greeted her with a smile.
"Have either of you seen Miles?" Lilly asked.
"Not for quite awhile," Artie replied.
"Yeah, I saw him with Kyle earlier, I think they took off together," Lucas said.
"You know you're probably right, he's an ass like that sometimes," Lilly replied.
"Hey can I talk to you a moment," Lucas asked. He stood up and led Lilly away from Artie.
"What's up?" Lilly asked.
"I had no idea you dated Artie," Lucas said.
"It's ok, we only dated for like a month and it wasn't too serious. I can see he make you happy," Lilly said waving her hand dismissively.
"Are you sure?" Lucas asked.
"Yes I'm sure, he's all yours," Lilly chuckled. "Now go back over there. I'll see you later I'm gonna head out."
"Thanks Lilly," Lucas said giving her a quick hug.
"For what?" Lilly asked.
"For being cool. Like you said I never had siblings growing up and I had no idea that you two dated. Thanks for being cool about this," Lucas said.
-We Are-
"What do you mean something is wrong?" Noah asked quietly.
"I don't know," Roldy said looking around trying to make sure they weren't over heard. "Jared was talking to him on the phone and he heard, like I think a car accident that mighty involve him," Roldy said lowly.
"Ok, how does he know?" Matt asked.
"Him and Miles left to go try and find him," Roldy said.
"He's gonna call us and let us know if he finds him right?" Matt asked. Noah nodded his head as well. They were both worried about Kyle.
"Of course," Roldy replied.
The three stood there in silence. They were all thinking about Kyle now. Was he ok? Would Jared get there in time? There were so many questions and they were all worried. It was shaping up to be a long night.
"Ok, I think Lilly and Lucas are still here, not a word to them. We don't even know what happened," Roldy said quickly.
"Right, this could be a false alarm," Matt said.
"Or it could be really serious," Noah said quickly.
"Right, we don't need to alarm them yet," Roldy said as his phone started to ring. He whipped it out of his pocket and saw Jared calling. "It's Jer," he said as he took off into the lobby. He answers the phone as he walked over to the elevator.
"Roldy I was right, he's hurt and Miles called the ambulance," Jared said panicked.
"Jared calm down," Roldy said as he stepped into the elevator with Noah and Matt right behind him.
"What's going on?" Noah asked. Roldy held up a hand silencing him.
"Shit Ro, there's blood. A lot of it," Jared said the panic in his voice rising.
"Jared Munroe do not touch him," Roldy commanded quickly. He knew Jared. Touching Kyle wasn't an option. He could have injuries that would only get worse if Jared didn't know what he was doing.
"But Ro," Jared started.
"You will only make things worse, just stand back and wait," Roldy said as the elevator doors opened. He stepped out of the elevator quickly. He made his way to their apartment as he tried to explain how Jared shouldn't mess with Kyle.
-We Are-
Kendall was pacing back and forth in the waiting room. James was sitting with Miles and Jared. Jared was tapping his foot and getting restless. Miles was chewing at his nails and trying to keep quiet. Kendall and James had left Jenny at home with Leora. They told her to stay up and promised to call as soon as they heard anything. They had asked her to to not call Jake or Adam yet. They wanted to wait until they knew more.
"Why haven't we heard anything?" Kendall demanded.
"Kendall, they have to take care of him first and make sure he's ok," James said quickly.
Kendall turned to Jared and Miles. They had arrived at the accident. Jared had been so scared. They had rushed to the hospital as quickly as they could.
"What state was he in when the ambulance arrived?" Kendall asked again.
"I don't know, I couldn't see if he was awake, but there was blood," Jared said.
"A lot of blood," Miles said earning a nudge from Jared.
"Not helping," Jared said glaring at the younger teen.
"Sorry," Miles mumbled looking down at his lap. He bit his lip and fell silent.
A tense silence spread between them. Everyone was worried. Kendall continued to pace. He was getting antsy. He just wanted to know how his son was doing. He needed to know if Kyle was ok. He jumped as phone started ringing. Miles jumped up answering his phone.
"Dad, look I know I'm late," Miles said quickly. "I'm with Kendall and James."
"Let me talk to him," Kendall said holding out his hand to Miles.
"Kendall wants to talk to you," Miles said quickly.
Kendall room the phone. "Logan?"
"What the hell is going on Kendall. He's an hour late for curfew," Logan snapped.
"Kyle's been in an accident. He's the one who got there first. He just wants to make sure Kyle is ok. I will give him a ride home later," Kendall said.
"What kind of accident?" Logan asked worriedly his annoyance gone.
"A car accident, I don't now how bad he's hurt. They won't tell us anything," Kendall said as a doctor walked out.
"Mr. Knight?"
"I gotta go," Kendall said handing the phone back to Miles. James jumped up and the two walked up to him. "That's us, how's our son?"
"I'm Dr. Johnson, and your son is very lucky the car his him from the passengers side. He's got a few cuts on his arm and face, a couple bruised ribs," Dr. Johnson said.
"What else," James said knowing there was more.
"He hit his head, we won't know the extent of the damage until he wakes up. We had him on some anesthetic for the surgery. It could take awhile to wear off. After that it's all up to him for when he wants to wake up," Dr. Johnson said.
"How long?" James asked.
"Could be a day or two, it all depends on your son," Dr. Johnson.
"Ok, can we go see him?" Kendall asked.
"Of course," Dr Johnson said nodding his head. He gave them Kyle's room number and left. Kendall and Hames turned to Miles and Jared.
"I think I'm gonna head out, I've got a show tomorrow night and if I don't get to sleep soon I won't sleep at all," Jared said.
"Jared," Kendall said slowly.
"He wouldn't want me there even if he was awake," Jared said shaking his head.
"Don't be like that," Miles said.
"It's true, I gotta go," Jared said jumping up. He left without saying anything else.
Kendall and James shared a look. They both sighed. Kendall asked Miles to follow them. They all headed down the hallway to see Kyle. Kendall wasn't sure this was a good idea.
-We Are-
Jake sighed as his phone started ringing. He was achey and wanted nothing more than to go back to sleep. However he had classes today. He couldn't miss this. Jake answered his phone.
"Jake, are you alone, there's something I need to tell you," James said quickly.
"Yeah, I'm just getting ready for classes," Jake said slowly.
"Kyle was in a car accident last night. He's fine, sort of," James said quickly.
"What do you mean sort of?" Jake asked.
"Well, he hit his head. We won't know how bad it was until he wakes up. The doctors say there wasn't much swelling in his brain and it's gone now. We are just waiting for him to wake up," James said.
"I have classes, but I'll stop by later," Jake promised. James gave him Kyle's room number and hung up. Jake sighed. He sat down at the table as Damien walked out of the bedroom.
"How are you feeling?" Damien asked.
"Well enough to go to class, but pops just called. He said Kyle was in a car accident last night," Jake said quickly.
"We can stop by later," Damien promised.
"I already said I would," Jake nodded his head.
"Are you sure you're ok, you still look a bit pale," Damien said walking over to Jake. He set his bag aside, and placed a hand on Jake's forehead.
Jake grabbed his hand. He moved it away from his face. "I'm fine Day, we have classes to get to," he said.
"Ok, let's go then," Damien said grabbing his bag from the counter. Jake nodded and grabbed his own bag. They left the apartment together.
Jake couldn't help but think about Kyle. He hoped that Kyle would be ok. He didn't want anything to be wrong with his little brother.
-We Are-
Jared yawned as he listened to Matt and Roldy go over their set list one last time. They had done a quick sound check and everything sounded great. Vivid Insanity was doing their own sound check. The guys were going on in a couple hours, but Jared's mind was a million miles away. He was thinking about Kyle. He hadn't woken up yet, and Jared was sure that wasn't a good sign.
"Jared, are you even listening?" Roldy asked.
"Uh yeah, we sing, we dance, we get off stage, what more do we need to know?" Jared asked.
"Smart ass," Matt said shaking his head.
"Guys leave him be, he's upset," Noah said jumping to Jared's defense.
"I'm fine Noah," Jared replied.
Matt and Roldy started talking again. Jared sighed, his heart just wasn't in it tonight. He walked over to the couch that was backstage. He fell down on to it.
"Everything ok mate?" Gavin asked falling down beside the blue haired man.
"I don't know," Jared sighed.
"What's wrong? Are the rumors true?" Gavin asked arching a brow at Jared.
"Yeah, he hasn't woken up yet," Jared said quietly.
"Oh," Gavin said.
"Yeah, sorry my heads elsewhere right now. Don't worry once I get on stage I'll be better," Jared said forcing a smile.
"Look I was supposed to come over and ask if you guys were sure about not touring with us, but I get it with what's happening with..." Gavin trailed off.
"Yeah, I don't know right now," Jared said.
"Well, I hope he's ok," Gavin said.
"Who's ok?" Crispin asked joining the two.
"Never mind Cris," Gavin said quickly. He stood up and led the other teen away from Jared.
"Jer, I know you're worried," Roldy said as he sat down next to his friend. "We all are and you don't have to do this if you don't want to," he said.
"I have to, I made a commitment Ro," Jared said quickly. "I'll be fine."
"If you say so," Roldy said.
"I need a distraction," Jared said.
-We Are-
Kendall was pacing back and forth in Logan's office. It was the only place he could be alone with James, Carlos, and Logan. They were all thinking of a way to talk to the press. James was sitting in a chair holding Jenny.
"What are we gonna do James," Kendall asked.
"Well, word is gonna get out sooner or later, might as well throw them a bone," James sighed.
"A small one," Carlos said quickly.
"Yes, just confirm the accident and that Kyle is recovering," Logan said nodding his head.
"It's better than nothing," James said looking to Kendall.
"I guess, the longer we put this off the harder people will try to get information from us. I don't want the others being hounded," Kendall sighed thinking of his other three children.
"Come on let's go bring Jenny back to the room, Leora or Jake can watch her," James said looking down at the toddler.
"Why does this keep happening to us?" Kendall sighed.
"I don't know," James said standing up. He moved over to Kendall and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Come on let's just go do this. The sooner we get this over with the sooner we can be with Kyle," he said.
"I guess," Kendall said. He left the office with the other three. He glanced over at Logan, who had been awfully quiet over discussing Kyle's condition.
"What do you think doc? Does he stand a chance of coming out of this ok?" Kendall asked quiet as James and Carlos talked quietly as well.
"I don't know, there are a lot of things to take into consideration, he hit his head and we can't know the damage until he wakes up," Logan said logically. "I mean he could have some disabilities after this or he could somehow miraculously come out just fine. It's hard to tell," he said.
"Thanks for being honest," Kendall replied.
The four headed to the nurses station. They saw Jared trying to talk his way into Kyle's room. Kendall quickly walked up to him and placed a hand on Jared's shoulder.
"It's ok, he's family," Kendall said quickly. He nurses nodded their heads. "Why aren't you at the stadium?" He asked.
"I did the show," Jared said quickly. "I can't help but worry," he said slowly.
"Go ahead then, take Jenny into the room and tell the kids we are releasing a statement." He said. Jared nodded his head. James handed Jenny over with a small smile.
-We Are-
Adam yawned as he watched Kyle. He was sitting in the blonde's room with Jake, Damien, Leora, Miles, Lilly, and Layla. Kendall, James, Logan, and Carlos were elsewhere trying to figure out what to tell the public. Rumors were flying and they had to set the record straight.
They had been camped out in the room all night. Everyone was worried about Kyle. They just wanted him to wake up.
"Is it good that he's been out this long?" Lilly asked.
"I don't think so," Adam replied.
Jake opened his mouth to speak when the door opened. Everyone turned to see Jared walk in with Jenny in his arms. Everyone realized a bit, but the room was still tense
"What's going on? Where are dad and pops?" Adam asked.
"Don't you have a concert to be at?" Leora asked.
"I did, we finished about an hour ago and your dads are getting ready to release a statement, they asked me to bring Jenny here," Jared said.
"Couldn't stay away?" Miles asked. Jared just shook his head as Leora took Jenny.
"I'm hungry, anyone else wanna join me," Leora asked.
"I will," Lilly said jumping up.
"Me too," Adam sighed standing up. Damien and Layla followed suit. They left the room. Miles gestured for Jared to take a seat. Jared sighed and fast down on the windowsill across the room.
"So, any thing yet?" Jared asked.
"No, we're still waiting," Miles said.
"I figured as much," Jared sighed looking out the window.
"He's gonna be ok, he's just gotta be," Jake said looking at his brother.
Kyle was strong. He would pull through this and he would be ok. He just had to be.
The three fell silent. The only sound in the room was the monitors that were hooked up to Kyle.
"This is all my fault," Jared said quietly. He looked over at Kyle. He was covered in scratches and bruises. There were bandages where his stitches were on his forehead. He looked to beaten up and broken. "I never should've called him."
"It's not your fault Jared," Miles said quickly.
"Yeah, it's that idiot who ran the red light. He should be laying here and Kyle should be the one who's fine," Jake said tears coming to his eyes. "Why did he get off with only a few scratches and my brother is here probably fighting for his life."
"Because no one ever said life was fair."
Jared, Jake, and Miles looked to Kyle. He was laying there with his eyes closed.
"Kyle," Jake said jumping up and running over to his brother.
"What happened?" Kyle asked cracking an eye open.
"Miles go get my dads," Jake said quickly. Miles nodded his head and took off. Jared quickly moved over to Kyle's side.
"You had us so worried," Jared said. Kyle looked up at Jared with confusion.
"Who are you?" Kyle asked slowly.
"Ha ha, very funny Kyle," Jared said.
"I'm not joking," Kyle said confused. He looked to Jake for help.
"Kyle that's Jared you know him," Jake said slowly.
"No I don't," Kyle said firmly.
"Oh, uh...I'm gonna go get a doctor," Jared said quickly.
Jared took off out of the room as quickly as he could. He stopped outside the door. His chest felt heavy and tears came rushing to his eyes. Sure Kyle was awake, but he didn't remember him. It hurt. The way Kyle had looked at him. He really had no idea who Jared was. He hadn't seen the normal glint in Kyle's eyes. He had looked confused and scared.
Jared fell back against the wall and slid down until he was sitting on the floor. He heard voices and footsteps. Jared looked up as the Knights and Mitchells running down the hallway. A doctor was among them too. Kendall, James, and the doctor entered the room telling everyone to go to the waiting room. Jake exited the room seconds later as well.
"Jared what's wrong?" Leora asked kneeling down next to him.
"He doesn't remember me," Jared said hugging his knees to his chest. "He looked at me like I was a complete stranger." His chest felt like it was going to collapse in on himself. Leora moved closer to Jared and pulled him into a hug.
"It's gonna be ok," Leora promised.
"Ok let's move this to the waiting room," Logan said getting everyone's attention.
Leora stood and helped Jared to his feet. Everyone started walking down the hallway. Leora hung back with Jared.
"I know you and Kyle were kind of in the middle of an argument, but it'll be ok," Leora said quietly. "You guys were on the verge of working things out. I'm sure he will remember," she assured him.
"Sure," Jared said nodding his head. He had to think positive. Things would work out in the end. They just had to.
Bum, bum, bum. There you go another chapter. What wrong with Kyle? What else doesn't Kyle remember? How will Jared react to this new development? What's wrong with Jake? Should Jared consider Gavin's offer? Will things work out for Jared? So many questions so little time. I hope you enjoyed this chapter.
