Chapter 36

Super

"Where is the miko?"

Kocoum stiffened at the deep voice and slowly turned his head. He had not heard the man's footsteps behind him nor had he heard the soft rustles of cloth.

"There is no miko here" Kocoum responded. Though he asked for a "miko" he was sure that he wasn't looking for Pocahontas' rampant raccoon. No others responded to that name.

Suddenly he remembered the way Kagome tensed whenever that blasted furball was mentioned and dread slowly washed over him. Was this man after Kagome? If he was, Kocoum was doubtful he'd be able to stop him. Though Kocoum was tall, the male before him was even taller, and though Kocoum was proud of his strength and prowess, a single glance told him that this pale skinned being before him would easily best him in a fight. Steeled muscles rippled beneath the shimmering clothing despite his incredibly relaxed stance. Cold, knowing eyes met his gaze and graceful, clawed fingers peeked at him from behind billowing sleeves.

This man was not human.

The man's graceful nose gave the slightest hint of a twitch and his eyes shifted from Kocoum to the direction of the Powhatan village.

"Do not lie, human."

Kocoum's hand had just begun its descent to the hatchet strapped to his waist when he was knocked into the rough bark of an aged tree. The force to his chest felt tens of times worse than a dozen of Kagome's charged punches and the air was painfully shoved out of his lungs. He had not seen the attacker move and did not even have time to react to the soft swish of air that accompanied his swift movements.

He was definitely not human.

"There you are, Kocoum. I thought I felt some-"

"Stay back!" Kocoum commanded. There was a long silence before Kagome huffed.

"Sesshoumaru, I really wish you'd stop trying to kill everything in sight."

The offender looked annoyed. Though he did not move, the slight narrowing of his eyes and the barest downturn of his lips was enough to say that he was not pleased.

"Hn."

Kagome knew that as far as Sesshoumaru went, that was going to be as close to a response as she was going to get. Judging from the displeasure, that "Hn" was undoubtedly a "no."

Kagome cried indignantly.

"I can't believe we thought it was a good idea to contact you. I thought this reunion would go differently, but apparently you still have that cocky little popsicle shoved up your royal butt."

Sesshoumaru scowled.

"Stay dead next time, Miko. This Sesshoumaru tires of fixing your mistakes."

She released another cry of fuming anger and stomped her foot, then spun around and stalked her way back the way she came.

Kocoum struggled to his feet and glared when the smirking demon strode around him.

"This Sesshoumaru trusts you know exactly what you are courting."

The demon did not stop walking, and did not even spare the man a glance as he passed.

"Yeah, but it'd be a real downer if you were part of the family" Kocoum grumbled beneath his breath.

His face was best friends with another tree not a moment later.

Right. Super hearing. Super strength. Super speed.

Though the idea sounded great at first, Kocoum was beginning to hate the fact that Kagome had called her former companions back to her side. It felt like these demons were out to ruin his life.
