Chapter 35
Lovino stayed deathly silent as he followed Antonio towards the theater they were supposed to go to. He didn't even glare at the ticket guy who'd snickered at them holding hands. Wait? Why was he letting Antonio hold his hand again?
The Italian snapped out of his daze just long enough to rip his hand away from the other, glancing around wildly to see they were already in the moodily lit room towards the back. He swallowed the lump in the back of his throat and tried to take a few calming breaths, "B-bastard! I never said 'yes'!"
"Hm? Oh… Did you not want to see it?" Antonio asked, frowning slightly in concern that he'd done wrong. "I guess I just got a little too excited… Have you already seen it or something? Is two hours too long of a movie? Did you have plans after or something?"
"No! I-It's not that! I-It's just-" Lovino stuttered, closing his mouth quickly and looking away. Now was the choice, did he want to risk giving himself nightmares for god-knows-how-long or admit that he was afraid?
"Just what Lovi?" Antonio asked, leaning across the armrest between them to try and get closer. He wanted more than anything for this date to go well, and how would that be possible if Lovino didn't enjoy the movie. "We really don't have to watch it if you don't want."
Lovino turned back quickly and glared at him with all his might, making up his mind not to look weak. "Never mind. I'm fucking fine. Why are you trying to talk me out of it? Are you scared?" He crossed his fingers quickly, actually hoping that he was afraid so he could get out of it.
Antonio chuckled and shook his head, leaning back into his own seat and putting his feet up on the chair in front of him. "Nope! I like scary movies, they're fun to watch." He said brightly; looking around the theater, he noticed that they were almost alone save a couple down in front and a man all the way to the right.
Lovino felt his heart drop, his hopes of escaping the scary movie fading with Antonio's words. He sunk into his chair so that it almost swallowed him up, pulling his knees up to his chest so that the movie theater chair would pop halfway up again. "Mm… Yeah, fun…"
They sat in silence for a moment as the lights dimmed just barely and the previews started, broadcasting about new movies coming out as well as reminders to turn off phones. Every once in a while Antonio would make a comment about how good or cute a movie looked while Lovino would just shoot it down as cheesy or stupid.
He tried everything he could to calm himself down, snapping at everything Antonio said and making fun of everything that appeared on the screen. Maybe it was all in his head? The movie probably wasn't even that scary and he was just getting himself worked up… Right?
Lovino only had the time to take a few more deep breaths before the lights dimmed for the last time, leaving the room almost completely dark. The younger boy found himself already clinging to the armrests on either side of himself as the screen came to life, flickering and dark just to put the viewers on edge before anything actually scary happened.
No matter how much of a pep talk Lovino kept chanting in his head, the images that had already started to flash across the screen were putting his whole body on edge. Hoping to shut it out he closed his eyes tightly, jumping almost out of his chair as a scream echoed from the speakers.
Antonio looked over at him for a moment but shrugged it off; figuring Lovino just hadn't been expecting the loud noise. Scary movies that started like this tended to bore him since they usually turned out cheesy and simply full of clichés to try and make you jump.
While Antonio sat there almost bored-like, munching on the popcorn he'd bought, Lovino was trying to hide his trembling hands in his sweater pockets. The screen finally faded into the opening title and paused the barrage of creepy pictures.
The movie started off slow, giving Lovino time to recuperate from the initial horror. Looking back at it now he realized he had overreacted and that there really wasn't anything to be scared about. At least that's what he kept telling himself as the main actor started into the creepy woods that the audience knew the killer was hiding in.
Antonio snorted and rolled his eyes, leaning over to Lovino to whisper about how ridiculous the movie was. However just as his body made crossed over the armrest, the murderer jumped onto the screen causing Lovino to jump and instinctively cling to the body close to him.
"Lovi?" Antonio asked quietly, trying to hide his smile as the other's fingers tightened around his jacket. Realizing what he'd done, Lovino let go of the other immediately and pushed him away.
"S-staaay in your own ch-chair, damn it." He hissed, trying to cover up his fear with a glare. Antonio just smirked and nodded, causally putting his arm along the back of the two chairs next to him. Lovino glared even harsher and opened his mouth to say something about the arm behind him when something flashed across the screen which forced a scared squeak from him.
Without meaning to, he hunched closer to Antonio to seek the protection of company. Not even bothering to scold himself as he tried to hide from the terrifying movie before him. Lovino didn't even notice when Antonio's arm slipped down from the back of the seat to wrap around his shoulders.
The junior smiled to himself as he felt Lovino accept his arm, leaning closer to him and closing his eyes tightly as the scene played out. Truthfully, he didn't think the movie was scary at all and even thought the cheesy props and fake blood were funny, but if Lovino was scared and he got to hold him then there was no complaining.
Lovino finally swallowed his pride and reached out to cling to the other's shirt, pulling him closer and burying his face in the warm chest in front of him. He could feel both of Antonio's arms wrap around him and hear the quiet, calming words being whispered into his hair.
They stayed like that for the rest of the movie, neither of them paying attention as Lovino tried to block it out and Antonio focused on comforting his date. By the end of the movie Lovino was calm again and only barely trembling, taking a deep breath and pushing the other away again as the lights came back on.
"Are you ok now?" Antonio cooed, trying to hide his very satisfied smirk that he'd gotten to hold Lovino. "Bastard I'm f-fine!" The other spat back, covering his face to try and hide the insanely bright blush.
The older boy just looked at him knowingly and stood up, stretching his arms far above his head. "I thought it was a good movie, at least the beginning… I didn't really catch the ending." He hummed, putting a teasing edge to his voice as he waited for Lovino to stand up as well.
"Y-yeah? Well it's probably cause you were scared. You were hugging me to death just cause you couldn't stand to watch anymore." Lovino huffed, crossing his arms and looking away.
"Oh was I? Sorry, it was very scary after all." Antonio chuckled, heading out of the theater with him and throwing away the left over popcorn. Lovino didn't say anything about the mocking look Antonio was giving him, both of them knowing it wasn't Antonio who'd been afraid.
Once they'd left the building Antonio slipped his arm around the Lovino's waist, ignoring his shouts to not touch him. "It was a long movie, it's almost time for dinner. Do you want to find a place to eat with me?" "W-whatever bastard. You'd better pay."
Antonio grinned from eye to ear, giving the blushing boy a quick peck on the cheek. "Don't worry, I will. And I won't tell anyone you were scared of the movie either." He said with a laugh as Lovino actually did push him away now, using his sleeve to scrub the spot Antonio had kissed and failing to hide the renewed blush on his cheeks.
