On the Road Again

Chapter 35

Between Sky and Land

When Mike Rogers asked me if I had ever been to Moab I remembered something about Moab from my childhood Bible Studies class but I couldn't image why one would go there. In the Christian Bible, Moabites are demeaned as incestuous and idolatrous.

Isn't it a little chancy traveling to Jordan right now?" I replied.

Mike laughed. "I don't mean the Moab region of Jordan; I mean Moab, Utah, you silly woman."

"Watch the mouth, buddy," I replied. "You'll be traveling alone and a little bit lighter in the shorts if you don't take care."

"That's what I love about you, Kathy," he answered back. "That delicate touch of enticing danger mixed with fear for my balls. Moab, Utah is a little spit of a town out in the Utah desert sitting beside the Colorado River. There's maybe just under five thousand people there during tourist season as it's the jump off point for white water rafting on the Colorado and the bedroom for both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks."

"Sounds just great," I said. "Let me get out my hiking boots and back pack. You know, some boyfriends would suggest a luxury cruise or a lovely dinner out. Only you would want to haul me out to the desert and make me work for it."

"I'm not cheap," Mike smirked back. "Come on. We can cut work on Friday and leave early. It's 750 miles and about 12 hours away. I'll take you out in the middle of nowhere and let you take advantage of me."

They were holding hands and moving over the desert landscape as quickly as they could, The sun setting in the west made the incredible red rock formations glow. Arches had two thousand mapped arches; sandstone worn down over the ages by wind and erosion. There were also rock formations like the Parade of Elephants at the entrance that would lodge in memory forever, a mystical trampling of giant beasts over a never changing landscape. The Delicate Arch, the Double Arch; they had been walking the Park since morning, drinking from their canteens, picnicking in the shade of ancient spires

Mike tried getting some in the shadow of Delicate Arch and Kathy said she didn't need sand in her underwear so now they were sprinting for the nice, soft, sand-free bed at the motel. As they moved down the trail, the night sky began to race the sun. Stars were starting to appear. They were rapidly approaching yet another, smaller arch when Kathy stopped dead in her tracks. Mike stumbled forward at the loss of acceleration and looked back at her.

"What's up, Kathy?" He looked around. "What are you looking at?"

"I don't think they issue permits for that." She said and pointed ahead.

Crouching on top of the arch, outlined against the sky was a naked man. Every detail was touched by the sun and his skin glowed as gold as the rocks were red. He was blatantly male. He was also stunningly beautiful, as much a work of nature's art as the land around him.

He stared back at them, completely at ease. As time stopped another man appeared, as beautiful as the first but different in style. He was long and tall. He was a living representation of the Greek ideal male.

"Come back down here, wolf boy." The second man said and tugged the first man back on to the arch. They both sank down and disappeared. A laugh floated in the night air

"I think they might have solved the problem of sand in their underwear." Kathy said.
