The world of the past was so beautiful, just as I remembered the world before I was taken into the labs. It wasn't perfect, non mutants having trouble accepting the change, the mutants that were among them. But it was ever so much more peaceful than my world could ever be. This only strengthened my resolve, I had to make sure that I saved my future. Phase one of my plan was just being able to make it back here. I needed more information, and there was only one way to get it. I went to a local library, hacking into files. It was so much easier here, protocols not nearly as tough as they used to be. I found exactly what I was looking for in ten minutes, and then I left.
Once I had managed to find a back alley out of the way, and the coast was clear, I went straight back to my own future. I could always come back to the past, but I had to get everything sorted out before my sister would arrive. I had to make it so that they had no choice but to send her back, and in order to do that, I would have to study ever aspect I wanted to put into play. I didn't know my family at all, was forced to be away from them. Now I would come to them, but they would never know I was there, not for a long time.
I traveled out in the open, sentinels that came to try and claim me nothing but a nuisance. They never stood a chance against me, and I destroyed every lab I came across that was not in line with Forge's. I knew that I'd have to get back into his lab, but I had no idea how to do that without arising suspicion. First, I would have to find my sister, that way I knew who was out there and how to get in. That wouldn't be too much of a problem.
But as I made my way in the world, it turned out that I had a stalker. I didn't expect her to be here, or even to find me, but she was persistent. It only made what I had to do more painful, but if I was successful, the pain would not matter anymore. Putting on my most disgusted face, I turned out to look behind me, knowing she was there. There was no way she could ever hide from me.
"Who are you?" I called out into the open air. My mother flew out, relief and love in her eyes. I repelled the nerve to walk into her, to tell her how much I missed and hated her, and to tell her exactly what needed to be done. But she couldn't know, she'd try to find a way that would work out in my favour as well. I couldn't let her jeopardize my plan, so I had to behave this way. I just hoped that one day, she could forgive me.
"Ah'm yer momma," she told me in a soft voice.
I smirked, giving her an evil stare, "Impossible, my mother was a selfish low life that never cared about me."
The look on her face broke my heart, it really did, but I couldn't afford to let anything get in my way.
"That ain' right, darlin'. Ah tried, we tried to get ya, neva stopped lookin' fer ya!" she was nearly in tears.
"Of course you did," I was sarcastic, "That's why I'm nearly grown up and you're finally decided that you don't want to die with a guilty conscious. Too bad, once the family gets together, I'll kill you all."
"No, y'have to believe meh!"
"I don't care for liars, now go away!" I screamed at her, using enough power to push her away.
I met my mother quite a few times over my travels. She never knew what I was doing, I kept pushing her away. I used another random mutant I had seen during my travels in the past. I spent some time in Forge's lab, never actually getting close to my sister, but keeping a good eye on her. I watched when she started training, noticed that she had developed more powers. Her eyes were changing, and all of Forge's records were very well kept on her. I hacked into them and took them back to my stolen lab.
I went back into the past, gaining information on the Forge there. He wasn't nearly as clever as he was now, but at least I knew where to begin my plan. Phase two, I had found my way into the government, suggesting to them the advantages of Project Paradise. It wasn't hard, these power hungry non mutants ready to do anything to get rid of the threat. Fear drove a lot of sensible people to do stupid things. One thing most of these idiots never knew, was that they were all the same. Power hungry mutants and non mutants were only threats because they felt superior. In truth, we were all the same. We all want to either rule each other or live incognito. There was no way those two powers could coexist. I had to do something to stop all this madness.
I went back into my future, and straight back to Forge's lab. I wanted to look in on my family and make sure there wasn't anything that I missed. Soleanna's eyes were no longer the same as mine, but Forge was starting to talk about sending her back. I had to move a little faster than I thought. She would be ready in a couple of years. I was happy that she showed so much progress, I just hated that dead look in her eyes. All the pain that was caused because I was too naive to see that I was being corrupted. It was all my fault, I had to protect her.
That last couple of years were hazy. If I wasn't spying on my family at Forge's lab, I was fighting my mother or organizing what needed to be done in the past. I had the patience this required, and also noticed that the more I used my power, the weaker I got. Whatever they had given me in the labs was unstable, I was dying. All the better, at least now there would be no guilt in what had to be done. I estimated the time of my death to take place in about two years. I had my moments where I would reflect on that, and it was just one of those times that my mother decided to find me. I was also looking for Maddock, I knew of him in the database, but for some reason, his help would make my plan work out.
"How long must you follow me?" I asked out into the open air. She never showed herself, just stayed in the shadows until I called her out.
"Until ye come ta yer senses," she replied, landing in front of me from the air.
"I came to my senses a long time ago," I told her with hate. It killed me, it really did, but I wasn't going to let up.
"Listen to yer momma Lune. We didn' jus' leave ya, we searched for years!"
"Obviously not well enough. Just because you feel guilty now doesn't mean you have to care. I forgive you, now go away."
"Now why is it Ah don' believe ye?"
"'Cause you're fucking stupid. The sooner you understand that I'm not interested, the sooner you can die in peace."
"Ah won' quit. Doesn' that prove Ah care more than ya think?"
"No, just proves you don't want to die with a guilty conscious."
"If ye hate meh so much, y'can jus' kill meh."
"Not worth it. I'd rather have a nice family reunion first, then you can all die by my hand."
She smirked, "Sure are stubborn, like yer daddy."
"You are all dead to me. Just wait until I find them, I'll kill you last since you have annoyed me the most."
I sent her away after that, and it was the last time I had ever seen her. I knew she was keeping tabs on me, but the third part of my plan was for her to warn the family that I was coming for Soleanna. She was horribly right about one thing, only me and my sister were cursed with the stubbornness of both our parents. It made us really thick headed, and we didn't actually listen to anybody when it came down to it. I was fortunate enough to find Maddock and bring him to Forge's lab. I came in and out with my alias, no one ever suspected a thing. Wolverine's nose was easy to fool.
I returned to the past to put the final plans into motion. We were just waiting on Sole. I returned to my time and spent the last few moments I had with my sister. Forge had almost perfected the time machine, and then she would go back. Six months I spent waiting, and watching as Maddock and my sister got close. That was going to pose a problem for my plan, but hopefully my meddling would allow him to be born again. And so the time came, and I was ready to execute the fourth part of the plan. I had to carefully manipulate my sister in order to get her to where she needed to be. She wasn't quite ready to save the world, but I knew how to help her, to teach her in the only way she could learn and do what needed to be done.
...
Soleanna's mind was finally out of all Lune's memories. Tears were falling down her face, everything making sense now.
"No..." she trailed, realizing that her brother was at the bottom of a rubble pile. She dug through it frantically, trying to find him, "Lune!" she was crying. She found him, smiling, and dying, "No, you can't die!" she cried openly, vaguely aware of everyone around her. She took his hand, holding it tightly
"I'm sorry, Soleanna, sorry that you had to live with such sorrow and grief. I hope you understand why I did everything the way I did. You have to know that if I had joined the family, they would have struggled to find a different way, one that didn't involve my death. But I wasn't supposed to be born in the first place, and by exposing Project Paradise now, our future will not come to pass," he spoke weakly.
"You can't die!" she cried again.
"Even if you didn't kill me, whatever they did to me in the labs was going to kill me anyway. There is no cure for it, I looked, you saw that. The only thing you have to do is destroy this lab, all of its record on me and you, everything that it ever had to do. Everything Forge wanted you to find is here. After you've taken care of that, you have to ensure that you're born. I have given you my powers, helped you learn how to do it. You can turn off Rogue's power permanently, and then you will be born."
"How can you say you weren't supposed to be born?"
"Because I know our parents, they would have sent the two of us back. And there was never a mention of me, meaning that the future was not fixed. I brought all this hardship on everyone, I deserve my fate. But at least I can die knowing that I fulfilled a purpose, even if I wasn't supposed to be here. You saved the world, you accomplished your mission. I really am sorry about Maddock, but he will be born again, and you two can start over, in a world that's actually more promising."
"No Lune, you saved this world."
He smiled, "Perhaps, but I could never do it without you. I love you Sole, I'm going to die now, I'm in quite a bit of pain. Never forget how much better the world can be. I hope that you get exactly what I've always wanted for you," he wiped away her tears, and exhaled his last breath.
Sole cried, feeling his touch on her skin. He was still inside her head, and the last touch he made to her transferred all the happy feelings he had now that he had completed his mission. But that didn't make her feel any better. All this hatred she carried for him was completely unjustified. He had done nothing but help her, and she killed him. What kind of monster was she?
"Petite..." her father had put a hand on my shoulder.
"He... he wasn't evil..."
"We heard, sugah..." Rogue trailed.
"Come on kid, ain't no good sitting 'round here. You want his death to mean somethin', ya gotta finish what he started," said Wolverine.
Sole looked at them, their melancholy faces. They may have been grim, but they were completely right. There was only one way to honour her brother, and that was to complete her mission. Looking back at her brother, she nodded once, kissing his forehead and then standing up. With her family around her, she was invincible, and finally going to put an end to this stupid war.
...
yeah... love you!
