She stared at the boxes piled against the walls, overwhelmed by it all. What was once just an idea had become her reality so quickly. She was finally, FINALLY, leaving Charming. With Jax. Once they all had clean bills of health and cleared criminal records, they set about the work of transferring their lives to San Diego. Tara expected it to take a year, maybe more. But in the span of six months, Jax took a promotion at the magazine and had his big, fancy house baby-proofed. Tara enrolled in the nursing program at University of California, San Diego, and Sophie was accepted to the most prestigious private school in the area. And then, before she knew it, it was time. An entire lifetime packed into boxes, being loaded into the back of a truck. An entire lifetime ahead of her, new adventures, the great unknown, and the only boy she'd ever loved by her side.
"Can we keep the couch?" Thomas' question snapped her out of her thoughts, which was good, because she could feel the tears coming.
"Tommy, shut up," Kerrianne scolded. "They're already giving us their house, how much more do you want?"
"What? It brings the room together." He looked so much like Jax when he smiled. Wyatt was going to have the infamous Teller smile too, Tara could already tell.
"You can keep the couch," Tara said, her voice wavering.
"Oh, Tara," Kerrianne whispered, rocking her infant daughter in her arms. "Are you sure this is okay? You can sell the house, or just keep it for when you guys come back to visit. I told you this was too much, you don't have to let us live here." The way Tommy's eyes about bugged out of his head, Tara knew he didn't agree.
"This is your home now. Yours, Tom's, and baby Lily's. There's no one I would rather leave it to. Have a good life here. I know I did." She wiped away the tear that rolled down Kerrianne's cheek, then kissed her on the forehead. "I love you so much."
"I love you, too," Kerrianne said, choking back a sob. "You've been like a mother to me."
"And now you're a mother. Life moves forward, whether we want it to or not." Tara ran a hand over Lily's smooth hair. "God, she's beautiful. You take good care of her."
"I will. I promise." Tara knew she would try. But Charming was a dangerous place for a child with an outlaw for a father. She was thankful to be getting Sophie out mostly unscathed.
"You look after my girls. And my house," she warned Thomas, punching him playfully in the arm. "Don't make me come back here."
"You got it, sis."
"Ker!" Sophie yelled from the front yard. "Bring my niece out here! I want to hold her again!" Sophie had been forbidden from re-entering the house because she kept trying to open boxes and look for things.
Kerrianne smiled. "That's my cue." She and Thomas headed out of the house, their house now, and went to join the rest of the family outside.
"They'll be okay, darlin'," Chibs said, appearing from Sophie's room with one last box. He wrapped an arm around Tara and she laid her head on his shoulder. "I take good care of my family."
"I know you do. You've taken the best care of Sophie and me these past five years." He kissed her hair, and she could feel him trembling with emotion. "Are you going to be okay, Filip?"
"Yeah, I'll be alright. I'm just gonna miss my girls, that's all."
"You've got a couple of girls here who still need you, you know."
"Aye," he agreed. She couldn't believe he was a grandfather now.
"Sophie will come back to visit you on holidays and every summer. And you can come to San Diego any time you like. You know that. First dibs on the guest room, always."
Chibs grinned. "You know I won't be coming alone, don't ya? Morgan's family is in San Diego."
"Right," Tara conceded, scowling. She still didn't like Chibs and Morgan together, but they had gotten pretty serious. Morgan was staying in Charming pretty much full-time. "I'll book you guys a nice hotel, then." They both laughed. "Are you happy, Chibs?"
"I am. What about you, love?"
"I am." With his arm still around her, he moved Tara towards the door. She wasn't sure she'd have had the strength to do it on her own, and she didn't quite know why.
Once the moving van was on the road, the goodbyes were said, and the kids were loaded into the back of Jax's SUV, the only thing left to do was go. And so they did. As they pulled out of the driveway and down the street, Tara watched the only family she'd ever known grow smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror. Clay, Gemma, the guys. Chibs, Kerrianne, Thomas, the baby. Opie, Donna, the kids. They were Charming, and they always would be. They belonged here. Tara never did. She always knew she was destined for more, and now she had it. Now she had everything.
Jax lifted her hand to his lips and held it there. "You alright, babe? You sure you're ready for this?" Tara chuckled. "What's funny?" he asked.
"Ready?" Tara teased. "I've only been waiting for this moment for the past ten years."
THE END
