Enter Luke and Leia (returned to their original forms), in a forest on Ossus.
Luke moans in his sleep.
Luke. No . . . No . . .
Leia. Luke. It's all right. It's all right.
Luke. No . . . I dropped it . . . I dropped it.
Leia. Luke. It's okay. Wake up. Wake up.
Luke opens his eyes.
Luke. Do you feel all . . . all right?
Luke. [untruthful] Yes.
Luke looks around.
We got away.
Leia. Yes. I had to use telekinesis to get you into your bunk. You've been . . . Well, you haven't been quite . . . You've been ill, quite ill.
Luke. How long ago did we leave?
Leia. Hours ago. It's nearly morning.
Luke. And I've been, what, unconscious?
Leia. Not exactly. You've been shouting and moaning and . . . things. I couldn't get the clone off you. It was stuck, stuck to your chest. You've got a mark. I'm sorry. I had to use a severing strike to get it away. The amphistaff bit you, too. But I've cleaned the wound and put you in a Jedi healing trance. . . .
Luke. Where have you put the clone?
Leia. In my bag. I think we should keep it off for a while.
Luke. We shouldn't have gone to Mos Espa. It's my fault, all my fault, Leia. I'm sorry.
Leia. It's not your fault. I wanted to go, too. I really thought Yoda might have left the vibrosword there for you.
Luke. Yeah, well, we got that wrong, didn't we?
Leia. What happened, Luke? What happened when he took you upstairs? Was the serpent hiding somewhere? Did it just come out and kill him and attack you?
Luke. No. He was the amphistaff, or the amphistaff was him, all along.
Leia. What?
Luke. Voren must have been dead for a while. The amphistaff was . . . was inside him. The Emperor put it there in Mos Espa, to wait. You were right. He knew I'd go back.
Leia. The amphistaff was inside him?
Luke. Qui-Gon said there would be aspects of the Force we'd never imagined. He didn't want to talk in front of you, because it was Yuuzhan Vong, all Yuuzhan Vong. And I didn't realize. But of course I could understand him. Once we were up in the room, the amphistaff sent a message to the Emperor. I heard it inside my head. I felt him get excited. He said to keep me there. And then . . . he changed, changed into the amphistaff, and attacked. It wasn't supposed to kill me, just keep me there until the Emperor came.
Luke sits up.
Leia. Luke, no. I'm sure you ought to rest.
Luke. You're the one who needs sleep. No offense, but you look terrible. I'm fine. I'll keep watch for a while. Where's my lightsaber?
Leia hesitates.
Where is my lightsaber, Leia?
Leia. Luke . . .
Luke. Where is my lightsaber?
Leia holds out the two halves of Luke's lightsaber, held together by one green crystal.
Mend it. Please.
Leia. Luke. I don't think, when it's broken like this . . .
Luke. Please, Leia, try.
Leia tries to repair the lightsaber with the Force.
Luke takes it back and ignites it. The lightsaber lights feebly, then goes out. Luke, then, tries to disarm Leia, to no avail. The lightsaber splits in two again.
Leia. Luke. I'm so, so sorry. I think it was I. As we were leaving, you know, the amphistaff was coming after us. And so, I created a Force blast, and it rebounded everywhere. And it must have . . . must have hit . . .
Luke. It was an accident. We'll . . . we'll find a way to repair it.
Leia. Luke. I don't think we're going to be able to. Remember . . . remember Han? When he broke his lightsaber, crashing the YT-1300? It was never the same again. He had to get a new one.
Luke. [aside] But Ko Sai's captured and Kota's dead. How am I supposed to get a new lightsaber? [to Leia] It's done. Lend me yours. I'll take first watch.
Leia hands Luke her lightsaber. Luke moves away, desiring nothing more than to get away from her.
Exit Luke.
