I went to sleep around nine, which was extremely early for me. Rick joined me around one after writing all day. He got up before me and made breakfast.
Before I could even make it downstairs I was sick. It took me ten minutes to make it to breakfast and the food smell was still threatening my now empty stomach.
Rick held up the pans like he was the best person in the world. I took a seat at the counter trying not to raise his suspicions. The phone rang and I tried to reach for it, but Rick was quicker. "Hello, Castle here."
I waited nervously hoping it wasn't the doctor's office. He handed the phone over to me. I took it not breaking eye contact with him because if I did he'd be more suspicious. "Hello."
"Is this Katherine Castle?" The voice was extremely squeaky. It almost masked her boredom.
"Yes."
"Would you like the doctor to give you the results of your test now or would you like to make another appointment?"
"Now would be good."
Castle scrunched up his eyebrows wondering what was up.
"I'll patch you through to Dr. Dunkin, please hold."
There was a click and then some elevator music.
"Kate?" It was Cameron.
"Hi." I barely managed to get the one word out.
"I got your blood test back and everything is perfectly normal. You're not sick. Your hormone levels are a little high, but it's to be expected. You're pregnant Kate."
I dropped the phone. It took me a moment to even realize that I'd dropped it and then I scrambled to pick it up. "Are you sure?" I asked. I still couldn't determine what my emotions were. I was still shocked.
"Yeah, we're sure."
I nodded. "Okay, thanks."
"Are you okay Kate?"
"I'm fine." The words came out easily and I smiled.
"You'll need to make appointments for your check ups okay?"
"Okay."
"I'll see you later."
"Yeah, thanks."
She hung up.
I set the phone on the counter.
Rick put a plate of food in front of me. Now he seemed worried.
"When did you go to the doctor?"
"Yesterday." I said simply.
"What!"
"I didn't want you to worry. Haven't you noticed how sick I've been?"
He shrugged. "I guess the past couple days you've been off, but you kept assuring me you were okay."
I nodded.
"Are you?"
I nodded smiling brightly. I realized that although I was good with grown up Alexis I wished I'd been there the whole time, to tuck her in, and take her to school, and everything else. I realized I wanted this all along.
"What is it?"
My smile was causing him to smile.
"Nothing." I said thinking that this wasn't the way to tell him. I thought maybe I should tell him tonight.
"Come on Kate. A grin like that from you is not nothing."
I took a deep breath. "Rick…I'm pregnant."
The reaction I got from him was not at all what I was expecting. I thought he'd jump up and down, celebrate, and hug me. Instead he laughed out loud for a second grinning like the Cheshire cat. "Kate!"
"What's wrong with you? I just told you we were having a baby. It's not funny."
"You just found out?" He asked extremely amused by something.
I nodded. "I wanted to be sure, but wouldn't keep it from you."
"I already thought you were keeping it from me."
"What?"
"Kate, the reason I brought up the kids topic was because I thought…" He trailed off and my face fell.
"Castle! You knew?"
"I didn't know…I thought…you aren't very forthcoming."
I didn't say anything at first processing it. "How long?"
"What?" He looked scared for a second.
"How long have you thought this?"
"Three weeks, ever since Ryan pointed out that…"
"What?! Ryan knows?"
"Well…"
"Who else? Castle! Who else?"
"Esposito, Laney and my mother."
I sat back down on the stool. He came and sat down next to me. He slowly reached out to hug me fearing that I might hit him.
I let him wrap his arms around me. He put me at arms length for a moment looking me up and down and smiled. "You should have said something Rick."
"I know." Suddenly he smiled. "So…we're having a baby!" His body language changed completely. He grinned.
I smiled at his sudden enthusiasm.
"We have to get all the stuff and toys and set up the nursery and…"
I put my finger to his lips, but it was too late. The person that was most important in finding out the news had just walked through the door. She was in pajama shorts and the Heat t-shirt and her extremely tired eyes opened wide in a split second at the word nursery.
We both waited for her reaction. It was hard enough for an older sibling to except that they were no longer the only child, but I didn't know how it worked when you were 19 and basically moved out.
"Are you serious? You're having a baby?"
Olivia was standing behind Alexis with her mouth agape.
We both nodded. I didn't know if she wanted a sibling, she had always had Rick to herself.
"I hoped, but I never thought…this is great." I sighed heavily, relieved.
"Are you sure you're okay with this?" Rick asked tentatively.
Alexis smiled, "Of course…I mean I'm going to be totally jealous of this kid having you for a mom, but I get to spoil my little sibling rotten. Not too sure I'm totally thrilled about what other people will think, but I'm totally happy."
I was pleased with her answer but something was bothering me. "What do mean by what other people will think?"
"Well, let's say I take my baby brother or sister when you need me to baby sit him or her and I go to the store and a little old lady sees me with him or her and says You're baby is so adorable."
Olivia laughed. "People will totally do that."
I was a little annoyed by the idea. Rick was even more freaked out by it only because he was thinking of Alexis actually having kids in the near future.
I looked over at Rick. "What if they think I'm the grandpa?" The look of terror on Rick's face was priceless.
Alexis started laughing and so did Olivia.
When I saw Rick's expression I started to laugh too. Eventually he broke a smile and he hugged me and we all ate breakfast thinking about what was in store for us in the near future.
