#37 Wig

It had been a year since her diagnosis. A year of numerous doctors visits, days of bed rest, chemotherapy, the works. Casey was a soldier through the whole thing, and Derek could not have been more proud of her. She claimed that the only reason she made was because of Derek, but he knew that she had the fight in her.

Derek saw her fighter in what probably was the most difficult day for her, the day she lost her hair completely. She was just in the beginning of chemotherapy, and she was steadily losing hair, and Casey decided that she should just take the plunge and shave the whole thing off. Derek knew how hard that had to have been for her. Her body had paled, she was weak, she had tired eyes all the time, and the last remnant of her former healthy life, her beautiful hair, was now gone too.

They went to a custom wig shop and she bought a wig that was almost identical to her old hair. She smiled, happy to look almost like she once did, but Derek knew that behind the smile was a broken heart, but still Casey carried on. Time went on and she continued to wear the wig, and she continued with her treatment.

One day Derek came home to find the house eerily quiet. He found that Casey and Derek's dog Ace, in his cage and as he looked around the kennel, Derek found strands and pieces of hair scattered among the floor. Derek picked a few pieces up and ran them through his fingers. He felt them, and quickly realized that it was Casey's wig, it appeared that her wig had been all teared up. Derek walked towards their bedroom, and finally heard a slight sound coming from the other side of the door which lead to their room.

Derek slowly opened the door and saw Casey sitting on their bed with her back to the door. He saw her body shaking ever so slightly, and her head bowed down. Derek tentatively walked up behind her and was startled to hear her say, "Don't. Don't look at me." Her voice was wobbly, as she was on the brink of tears. "Case," Derek started. "Ace got my wig when I wasn't looking and completely tore it up. Don't look at me, I cant' lose you when you see me." She whispered. Derek slowly sat down next to Casey and tilted her chin up to look him in the eyes. "Casey, you will never lose me. You are insanely beautiful hair or no hair. I love you and you only get more beautiful everyday." Derek whispered to her sincerely. Casey nodded slowly and Derek pulled her into a tight hug, and for the first time since her diagnosis, Casey cried. And Derek, well, he was there to hold her and dry her tears for as long as they came.

Kind of my first angsty-sad piece, any feedbacks and reviews are welcomed and appreciated! :)
