Terezi sat next to Karkat, who was still waking up from the pain killers. He was battling to keep his eyes open after taking an hour nap. He felt an hour was enough sleep. There were things to worry about. He adjusted his bed more so he was sitting up straight.
"Can someone please get me some damn coffee?" he finally groaned, "Where is the fucking service in this place?" Terezi smiled, seeing Karkat was back to normal.
"You should really sleep," advised Terezi.
"Fuck that! I got to hear that Nepeta's alive before I can sleep peacefully!" he responded, "At least they left my clothes on."
"Maybe we can go see Aradia," she suggested.
"Yeah. That sounds like a good idea," he said unstrapping the heart monitor.
"Maybe you should tell your doctor that you're going somewhere," suggested Terezi.
"Meh. They're used to it by now," he shrugged, "Let's go." They got up and left the room. Karkat's continued to follow Terezi down the hall all the way to the maternity ward. They were greeted by Dave, Jade, and John who were talking in the hallway.
"Oh my God there you are!" Jade gasped.
"You're alive!" John cheered as he hugged Terezi. Jade hugged Karkat.
"Holy shit. I thought you were going to die," said Dave, too cool for the hugs.
"We'll tell you the story later," said Terezi, "Is Aradia okay?"
"She's right inside there," said John.
"Thanks." The two walked up to the door. Karkat reached for the knob but Terezi stopped him.
"What?" Karkat said.
"It sounds like she's having a contraction," she hissed, "Let's wait until she's done. You never want to get involved with a woman in labor." Karkat nodded in agreement. The two listened on the other side of the door.
"You know you could get a ces-"
"No! No I can do this! I got this!"
"You won't be able to do this if you don't breathe correctly."
"Okay…"
"That's it. You can…ow ow ow ow ow!"
"…I'm sorry…am I hurting you?"
"I'll be…okay, keep breathing through it."
"…okay! It's over…"
"I think my hand is bruised"
"I think I'm going to throw up again…"
"You're shaking. Are you sure you're okay?"
"Just get me the barf bucket please."
"…alright here."
"…it stopped. I don't feel nauseous anymore."
"I'm just going to leave this here."
Terezi opened the door. She saw just Aradia and Sollux in there.
"Hi," she greeted.
"Oh my God! You're okay!" Aradia cheered, "come here!" The two hugged each other.
"AA told me what happened, are you two okay?" Sollux asked.
"Nepeta got shot," said Karkat, "We still don't know if she's okay."
"Oh no…"
"So how are you two doing?" Karkat asked.
"We're nearing the end," reported Sollux, "Almost 9 centimeters. We've both had a long day."
"We all have," said Aradia.
"I'll tell you everything later," said Karkat.
"Um, I kinda wanted to talk to Aradia alone for a second," said Terezi, "if you don't mind."
"You can talk to me," offered Aradia.
"Alright I'll tell you now," said Karkat. The two boys then left for the hall.
Rose saw Kanaya in the waiting room, looking kind of depressed. Now was the best time to talk. Rose sat next to Kanaya. Kanaya looked at her with fear for a brief second.
"Are you going to finally tell me why you haven't been talking to me for. The past few hours?" she asked. Kanaya sighed.
"It's Vriska, okay?" she revealed, "She confronted me about everything and now…now I'm starting to believe that she may be right."
"That's it? Kanaya, I'm your wife! Why didn't you tell me sooner?" Rose asked.
"Because I didn't know what to think of it myself!" she answered, "I guess I always felt more like a mother to her than a lover. Always protecting her from things, comforting her when she was upset, scolding her when she did something wrong. But now I see her now and…she's grown up and I don't know what i feel, but I feel rather…upset. I don't know why. I've always wanted her to mature and grow up but…" Rose cut her off with a kiss.
"I understand where you're coming from," she said, "But you need to understand that you're not her mother and that she's a grown up and she can take care of herself. Channel that into raising your own children." Kanaya smiled.
"Alright. I will," she smiled, "Now let's get back to Aradia."
"Agreed," Rose almost collapsed as she stood up. Kanaya took hold of her.
"Are you okay?" Rose smiled.
"Yeah. I just donated a lot of blood and I'm a bit weak," she explained. Kanaya let her wife lean on her as they went back to their children.
"Are they still talking?" Karkat asked.
"Yeah I think so," observed Sollux.
"Shit. What the hell are they talking about?" Karkat pressed his ear up to the wall. Sollux shrugged and mimicked him.
"You need tell him."
"He won't understand."
"Of course he will! He's all for this stuff!"
"…Yeah I guess he is. But after all we've been through…I don't think he'll just accept me again."
"Terezi, that's not what you said to me."
"…I guess you're right. I need to practice what I preach…alright I'll do it. I'll tell him!"
"There we go! Atta girl!"
Karkat suddenly grabbed Sollux and pulled him out into the hallway.
"Holy shit holy shit!"
"What?"
"Terezi wants to get back together!" Karkat stated.
"You sure?" Sollux replied.
"What else do you think she was talking about?" he asked.
"Dave maybe?" Sollux suggested, "I mean, she dated and broke up with him too."
"…Shit you're right," sighed karkat.
"Hey, you're probably right. I'm saying just don't get your hopes up too high," he comforted.
"…Yeah. I guess," he replied.
"Karkat? Karkat?"
Karkat turned around to see Terezi searching for him.
"Terezi!" he called. She turned her head and spotted the two.
"There you are. Karkat, can I talk to you alone for a second?" Terezi asked. Karkat looked at Sollux with a hopeful expression.
"Yeah. Of course."
"Eight hours. Sollux, I've been doing this for eight hours…"
"The doctor said that you were almost there last time he was in here," comforted Sollux, "Some women do this for over 24 hours. Be happy you're not one of those."
"True."
"Kanaya, I can walk by myself now. it wasn't that much blood!"
"You were tipsy."
"That was almost an hour ago!"
The two turned to see Rose and Kanaya. The two looked up from their little squabble and noticed the couple staring.
"I just donated a lot of blood because of that accident so she's worried I can't walk on my own," explained Rose.
"How is it?" Kanaya asked.
"Almost nine hours of this. I'm ready to get this over with now," reported Aradia. The doctor then walked Ina's if on cue.
"Ah, Kanaya! Just who I wanted to see!" Dr. Zahhak greeted.
"What is it?" she replied.
"Due to that accident we are severely understaffed. Do you think you can help out?" he asked.
"I would like to see my children be born first," she replied.
"Of course!" he replied examining Aradia, "Actually that's something I would need help with."
"I can do that," she smiled, "I'll go get changed now."
"There's no need for that Maryam," he said.
"Why not?"
"Because I need you now," he said, "She's ready to deliver."
"Yes!"
"Now? Like, now now?"
"Yes now now. The three of you can help me take her to the delivery room," he instructed. All four had expressions of joy. Just then the door opened.
"Hey guys what's up–"
"Dave, Tell everyone Aradia's having the baby," said Rose.
"Now?! Like, now now?"
"Yes! Now now!"
"Alright! Good luck!"
"You wanted to talk?" Karkat asked.
"Yeah…" Terezi was looking away as if she was a bit nervous about something. Nervousness was pretty uncommon for Terezi.
"Terezi, you know you can tell me anything, right?" he said.
"Yeah I know but I'm…please don't be mad," she asked.
"Oh fuck me, you are getting back together with Dave," fretted Karkat. Terezi giggled.
"No Karkrabs, I am not getting back together with Dave," she assured. Karkat held in a sigh of relief.
"So what is it then?"
"Okay…well, remember how we used to have a lot of flings after Dave and I broke up?" Terezi began.
"And then you haven't called in like a month? Yeah I remember that!" Karkat grumbled.
"Well I've been doing some thinking…and I was wondering what you think about ra–"
"Ah there you two are!" said the doctor, "I have been looking all over for you two!"
"Sorry Dr. Scratch," Terezi apologized.
"How is Nepeta?" Karkat asked.
"That's what I came to tell you about," he said. The two had his attention.
"Well?"
"She was shot in the shoulder she's going to be fine," reported Scratch. Karkat and Terezi smiled and were filled with relief.
"Can we see her yet?" Karkat asked.
"Right this way," he replied. The two nodded. Karkat turned to Terezi.
"So, what were you going to say?" he asked.
"I'll tell you later."
"Come on! You can do this!"
"I can't do this!"
"Yes you can!"
"You can Aradia!"
"You try doing this!"
"I said you got this. Not me."
"Ohh…epidural my ass!"
"Aradia! breathe!"
"You have three of us with you. Don't worry."
"Come on. You have survived traumatic brain injuries before. You can handle this."
"…You're right. I can do this…I can do this!"
"That's the spirit! Now push!" encouraged the doctor. Aradia closed her eyes. Sollux took one hand, Rose took another, and Kanaya helped the doctor. "Almost there!"
"Ahh-ahh ow!" Sollux realized that holding her hand probably wasn't the best idea. Suddenly, crying filled the room and echoed into all of their hearts. Aradia felt a smile spread across her face. The doctor had a look of confusion.
"I think I made an error," he said.
"What?"
"WHAT?!"
"It turns out you're not having twin girls."
"Huh?"
"This one is a boy." Everyone sighed in relief.
"A boy?" Aradia gasped.
"Yes."
"Definitely a boy," reported Kanaya. Aradia's smile grew.
"I knew it…"
"…Chord is cut. Now to clean him up," said Kanaya, doing her job.
"Miss Megido, the other one is coming soon," the doctor alerted.
"Oh yeah. Forgot about that," she replied, "I'm so tired…and I'm dizzy…"
"Come on you got this Aradia!" Rose encouraged.
"No I can't. Sollux can do it for me…" Sollux smiled.
"I would but I don't have a uterus," he replied.
"…well that sucks…"
"Come on aa! It's just one more," encouraged Sollux.
"Whoa whoa whoa! Just one more? It's not like eating a damn hot dog at a contest!" Rose snapped.
"Okay! Okay! I'm sorry…" Aradia weakly smiled.
"Miss Megido, now," reminded the doctor. Sollux and Rose each took a hand. All three winced through the pain. Aradia suddenly stopped, gasping for breath.
"Breathe!"
"I am!" Aradia cried.
"You need to push harder," instructed the doctor.
"I feel so…weak."
"The more time you waste, the more blood you lose," said the doctor, "That's why you feel so weak."
"I…I'll try…"
Nepeta awoke in the hospital. For once, she remembered what happened. Oh no…Karkat! Did he…She then felt a burning pain throughout her shoulder. She didn't even want to move. She relied on her other side to sit her up.
"Oh. You're finally awake."
She quickly looked around for the voice. Equius was kneeling right next to her bedside.
"I'm fine," she smiled.
"That's good."
"I'm…where's Karkat? Is he okay?" she asked.
"I saw him not to long ago. Terezi told me he had another crisis…whatever that means…but he was walking around alive and well," he reported. Nepeta sighed. "I am very relieved that you are alive."
"Thank you," smiled Nepeta.
"No i mean…I don't know what I would have done if you had died. I couldn't live without you," he confessed, "You are the only real friend I have." Nepeta put her arm on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry I made you worry like that."
Suddenly the door opened. Terezi and Karkat walked in.
"Nepeta!" Karkat ran and hugged her. She hugged him back to the best of her ability.
"I'm so happy you're alive," she said.
"That IM alive?! I thought you were DEAD! How did you survive?!"
"I was shot in the shoulder," she answered, "I guess I got lucky."
"How is Aradia?" Nepeta asked forgetting about Equius.
"Last time I checked she was almost ready to give birth," said Terezi.
"What?"
"Oh good for her," said Nepeta, "How long has it been?"
"About 8 hours," answered Karkat.
"Oh that's good that she's almost done," she said. Karkat's phone buzzed. He took it out of his back pocket and looked at the text."
"Hm?"
"What is it?"
"Aradia's finally ready."
"Oh! We better get to the waiting room," said Terezi, "We'll stop by later."
"Bye! Tell me how it goes!" Nepeta turned back to Equius.
"So, it's going to be...empty at my house now that you remember everything," Equius began.
"Don't worry," smiled Nepeta, "I'm not leaving anytime soon."
"You're almost there! Keep going!"
"Come on!"
"There's a head. You're almost there!" the doctor motivated. Rose went by the doctor. Aradia screamed. Sollux was silently screaming from the pressure in his hands. Almost over.
Suddenly Aradia loosened up. Sollux felt his hands being released from the pressure of her sweaty, cold hands. Aradia was trying to catch her breath.
"It's a girl."
"A girl…" Aradia whispered, "That's perfect…" She looked very pale.
"I'll take care of this one," said Rose, "Kanaya taught me this in case you randomly went into labor…You look so cute. You're covered in disgusting goo but your still cute." Aradia smiled weakly at the tiny human. Kanaya came back.
"Did I miss it?"
"Just barely. Cut the chord and let's clean this one up," replied Rose, "It's a girl." Kanaya smiled, tears in her eyes.
"Let's clean you up…my little girl." The two new parents then left to clean up the girl.
"AA? You okay?" Sollux asked, "AA?"
"…S-Sollux…" She looked like she was in pain. She slowly and weakly moved a shaking hand to her rapidly moving chest. The doctor quickly checked her pulse.
"No…just as a feared…" he gasped, "I need as many people as possible down to the maternity ward. Now!"
"What?"
"hypovolemic shock. She has lost too much blood," he said, "If it continues it can have devastating effects."
"Well can't you do something about it?" Sollux asked.
"She's lost a great amount of blood already," he replied, "I don't know how much A+ we have left after that accident…"
"You seriously are out of blood?" Sollux scoffed.
"Mr. Captor, we just barely had enough to cover that horrendous auto accident! We have about a pint left of nearby compatible blood. It'll delay some time, but it's not very likely that we'll get her the blood in time."
"AA!"
"Sollux…It's okay…" she rasped, "Remem…ber…I lo…"
"Aradia no. Don't do this to me again!"
"I'm so…sorry…"
"No. Aradia!" A few other workers came in.
"Mr. Captor, I'm going to have to ask you to leave," said a doctor.
"No…No please!"
"This way mr. Captor. We'll do what we can."
"Aradia!"
"Mr. Captor! Calm down!"
"I'm not going to calm down. I–"
"Mister Captor," the doctor interrupted, "we are losing time." Sollux hung his head.
"She had better live then."
Sollux burst through the doors. Everyone waiting outside looked up. Sollux hung his head. He looked unstable and his face had a look that seemed defeated. Rose and Kanaya ran to him.
"Sollux? Sollux what happened?" Rose asked.
"What is going on?" Terezi asked.
"Well, kanaya and I had to help clean and wrap the twins because they were understaffed today due to the huge accident I keep hearing about," Rose explained, "I come back and he's all upset and Aradia's gone."
Sollux just stood there.
"I think he's having a mental breakdown," whispered Vriska. Sollux began heading for the exit.
"Sollux get back here! You need to tell us what happened!" Karkat called after him. Vriska ran around and blocked him from leaving.
"I'm not letting you leave without knowing what happened to my friend!" she snapped. He took a ragged deep breath.
"Sollux, you need to tell us what happened," Rose insisted, "Just sit down." She lead Sollux to his seat. Sollux sat there in silence for a moment. He then broke down. He began to uncontrollably sob his eyes out. Kanaya ran to him to comfort him.
"Oh Sollux," empathized Rose. Equius appeared to be mildly disappointed and depressed but inside he was feeling much worse.
"No…she didn't…she couldn't have…" gasped Karkat.
"Sollux we need you to tell us the full story," Jade instructed. Kanaya hugged him tightly. His breathing was getting ragged and raspy.
"Dave, bring him water," instructed Kanaya. Dave obeyed. "Shh. It's okay. You're okay." Vriska rolled her eyes which resulted in a nudge from Terezi. Dave returned with water.
"Here," she offered. He took a sip. "Now, what happened?"
"I-I was with her and-and…there was something wrong and…they said that…there was so much blood…Everything is all wrong! It's all wrong!" he sobbed, "They said they would do what they could but…" Kanaya pulled him in tighter. "It's all my fault!"
"No it's not Sollux," comforted Kanaya, "These things happen."
"It's all my fault!" he moaned again, "It's…I don't know…what will I do…I…"
"No. You're okay. I promise she'll be okay," assured Rose.
"S-Sollux…"
"What?!"
"Your…your…guh! Blood!" Karkat turned away.
"Huh?"
"Your nose is gushing blood man," Vriska pointed out. Sollux covered his nose.
"I'll go get the tissues," sighed Dave as he left.
"Ugh, I haven't had these in years," he said muffled, "Oh God why now."
"You are extremely stressed. So it makes sense that your blood pressure is high."Blood was soon dripping through Sollux's hand. He mumbled a 'shit'.
They then heard footsteps rush out of the doors. Everyone looked up.
"Well?" Rose asked.
"We mostly just need to refill the blood she lost," reported a nurse, "Unfortunately, we had an unusually large accident recently come in and we don't have the blood we need. And by the time we run to get more on the other side of the hospital it'll be too late."
"What's her blood type?" Terezi asked.
"A positive. So we need A or O positive or negative."
"Well, I'm out," said Terezi.
"Me too," answered Jade.
"Me as well," sighed Equius.
"Blood disease," reminded Karkat, "That wouldn't work."
"I'm O positive…" Sollux raised his voice, "I…I can–"
"No way am I letting you lose blood. Your nose is bleeding!" interrupted Rose, "Im O negative."
"You donated about two pints already today!" Kanaya reminded.
"Damn it!"
"I'll do it," volunteered Vriska, "I'm A something.""You're A negative Vriska," reminded Kanaya.
"Whatever just let me do it!" Vriska rushed.
"You will be donating a lot of blood Miss Serket," he warned.
"I don't care! Save my friend!" she snapped.
"Right this way then," the doctor lead her back, "And someone please get that guy over there some tissues?"
Almost 20 minutes had passed. The agony of waiting filled the room. The intensity was crushing Sollux. He folded his hands together and closed his eyes. Karkat looked at him.
"You're praying?" he questioned.
"Maybe."
"But aren't you like a strong atheist?"
"What else am I supposed to do?!" Sollux cried, "There's nothing I can do now. This is all I can do. There's no harm in trying…"
"I heard with some physical therapy, Tavros has a pretty great chance of walking again," reported Kanaya. Vriska drowsily smiled. Woozy from all the blood she donated, she then rested her head on her cousin's lap. Terezi smiled.
"I guess you really can change from a narcissist to a human being," murmured Terezi. Kanaya smiled. Everyone then heard the doors open.
"Mr. Captor?" Everyone looked up, hope in their hearts as they awaited the news.
