Chapter 37

Someone Who Cares

Going back with the seed wasn't the easiest thing for Chloe. She knew the sooner she went back to the factory, the sooner she'd probably leave. After digging around and walking nearly a mile from the factory, she was exhausted. She was wading in the thick dirt, pushing her toes deep down. Her Mary Jane's weren't that old and they looked damaged after her run from bullies and clods of earth. Part of her wanted to cry as she thought of going back and getting picked on again. The other part of her wondered if she could convince Once-ler to keep her.

Her thoughts gained an interruption with the wind kicked up. She stopped and shivered. Her legs raised goose bumps and she rubbed her knees together with each step. It certainly didn't help that her socks weren't long enough and her cardigan was thin. Surprisingly, that was usually what she wore for ice skating! This was so much worse than the rink!

"Chloe?"

She squinted up at Once-ler. His usual stride had paused seeing her shake. Not hesitating he lifted her up. Lazily she rested her head on his shoulder. She nuzzled closer and felt his hair brush her forehead. She felt safe in his one arm that never lost its strength.

Once-ler had a small smile. He had missed holding his girls so much! It nearly killed him that he'd let Chloe go. With the wind picking up he eyed the clouds.

"They're always there," he said to himself.

"Hmm?" mumbled Chloe against his neck. She sleepily blinked.

"Nothing Butterfly," he said. "It's just always the same out here."

Sure enough it was: the ashy colored ground, the purple-grey skies, the factory of black iron, the red wagon-

"What?" gasped Once-ler.

"What?" echoed Chloe. She barely lifted her head.

Once-ler hurried and stumbled up towards the only splash of color. It was new, that he could tell. There were three stuffed animals which he'd know anywhere! Then with his sight trailing up from the wagon to the stairs he saw a little body.

No...it couldn't be...

"Natalie!" he shouted in panic.

Chloe scrambled down and they both ran upstairs. Once-ler skipped two at a time and collapsed on the concrete to his oldest.

"Natty!" he said desperately. "Natalie can you hear me?"

She heaved a breath and that was enough. Once-ler scooped her up and fumbled for the key in his pockets. Trembling he unlocked the glass door and ran in. Chloe had tried skipping steps and by the time Once-ler was inside, she reached the top. Panting she followed down the halls.

When she dodged into the secret house, Once-ler had Natalie on the sofa. He was shaking her and calling out.

"Natalie!" he kept shouting. "Natty! Wake up!"

Chloe leaned over the sofa to watch. She bit her lips and then ran around. She sat next to her sister and yelled "Natty!" too. After a tense minute, Natalie breathed evenly and fluttered her eyelids. To Once-ler's relief he saw the eyes of sapphire blue look back at him.

"Dad!" gasped Natalie happily and flung her little arms around him.

"Natty you scared me," Once-ler managed to say. He hugged her and kissed her head.

Chloe laughed and bounced on the cushions. Finding one child running towards him and then another fainted on his doorstep, nearly snapped Once-ler's conscience. Then he sat Natalie up, managed to catch Chloe mid-air from her jumping and seated her too. Then he stepped on and over the coffee table. He tapped his fingertips against his folded shoulders. He left, returned with juice, and put two glasses on the table. He paced up and down the room while his daughters looked solemn. Natalie slowly sipped and savored the cold, orange flavor.

"I don't know what's going on, but you two being out here isn't right!" He did sound stern like he did with Mustache. "My conscience is clear that you two shouldn't be out here where you can get sick."

Natalie suddenly snickered. Her snickering led to a giggle and Chloe joined in because the feeling became contagious. Not for Once-ler though. He stopped his pacing and stared at them.

"What are you laughing at?" he demanded.

"You look ridiculous!" blurted Natalie. She pointed to his facial hair.

"Anyway," continued Once-ler. "I need to know why you both-"

He paused to see Natalie lean over to Chloe, whisper and then they both laughed. They had their hands over their mouths, knees crossed, and their bodies were shaking gleefully. Once-ler rolled his eyes at his daughters who were tickled pink over his appearance.

"Where's your mom?" he finally asked. He waited for Natalie to speak.

"In Thneedville…"

"Is she coming too," asked Once-ler. His throat felt dry.

"I don't know," said Natalie. "I came alone and I'm not going back. Everyone hates you and I hate it! I missed you and…Mom cries sometimes."

"I've cried too Daddy," admitted Chloe.

Once-ler crumpled to the floor and put his elbows on the coffee table. He rubbed his eyes to not feel tears. His guilt came back.

"Just…" he started. "You both need…What can I say?"

Natalie sat on the table's edge and crossed her legs. Then she nodded her head like he did to start business meetings. Once-ler felt a smile twitch at her imitation.

"Natty," he said slowly. "I'm sorry it's been hard. It's just not safe out here."

"I don't care," retorted Natalie. "I really don't care! I want to stay here!"

Chloe nodded and finished her juice. Once-ler didn't know how else to explain this. He mussed his hair.

"I know you don't want to live in Thneedville," he said. "But you have to go back."

"But I just got here," his oldest daughter said desperately. "I'm not going back to Thneedville!"

"You're safer there and…" Once-ler paused as he shakily breathed. "I belong here for now. You and Chloe don't."

Then something strange came over the six-year-old. She looked like she was after the drowning accident; afraid.

"You can't…" said Natalie. Her lips wobbled. "You-you can't let us go!

"Natty listen to me-"

Once-ler didn't get to finish for as abrupt as Chloe's arrival had been relieving tears, Natalie suddenly lost it. She couldn't take it anymore after her experience in Thneedville and broke down. Her eyes spilled little rivers down her face and she let out choking sobs. Before Once-ler knew what was happening Natalie had jumped off the coffee table and clung to him with her pleas.

"Don't let me go Daddy! Please!"

It was rare for Natalie to call Once-ler anything besides "Dad." Her breakdown wasn't out of anger like the jar of seeds. She was truly scared and shattered. It wasn't as bad as Chloe's, but her grief was strong.

"Natty-" Once-ler managed to speak. He gently pried her back to look her in the eye. "You almost drowned, Chloe was sick with Yersiniosis and in the hospital. You're in more danger here than you realize. I just want you safe."

"I want to stay here!" pleaded Natalie. "Please Daddy! Don't send me back! I don't want the bad guys to find us!"

"What happened?" Once-ler needed to know. "Why are you upset?"

"I hate it Dad! I hate it!"

"What's going on over there?"

"I can't!"

"Natalie tell me wh-"

"I'm not going back!"

Natalie's scream echoed in the room and she slumped down. Once-ler and Chloe's ears rang. He still held her while she gripped his sleeves and rested on his thigh. There was a long silence with a helpless father.

"I don't want to leave either," replied Chloe softly. "I want to find more seeds and dig more with you."

She put the last seed on the table, knelt down by her sister and patted Natalie's side comfortingly. Once-ler was at a loss for words. He held them both and thought of what to do. He was frustrated he wasn't getting a clear answer, but he couldn't stand seeing his children in pain. He actually thought maybe it wouldn't hurt to let them stay for a couple days.

"Alright look," he said gently. He sat Natalie up. "Let me talk with Mom about this and we'll see."

"She'll say yes," whimpered Natalie.

"Until then," continued Once-ler. "I think we can be together for Christmas. It's coming up."

"Can we?" gasped Chloe. "That'd be the best thing ever!"

Natalie nodded. She still wept, but Once-ler smiled. He lifted both twins up and was surprised to see he could still carry both girls.

"We'll have dinner first," he said and headed for the kitchen.

Chloe grinned and when down she skipped into the pantry. Natalie rubbed her eyes and was seated on the counter.

"How about your favorite?" Once-ler asked her. He pulled her hair out of her wet face.

Natalie nodded again and smiled a little. Once-ler kissed her cheek.

"Everything's going to be okay," he promised.

Natalie hadn't been home long, but already she felt things would be okay. She was with her dad and Thneedville wouldn't hurt her again.

The stormy blows hadn't stopped since Marie's screams over a newspaper of her and Once-ler. She barely heard anything else in the despair until something familiar swept in.

"Good grief Marie what are you doing out here?" called a voice.

Amidst the wind Marie sat up and spun around for the direction it came from. Dr. Helms was poking her head out of her van with her hair blowing. Immediately Marie jumped up and ran for the van and found the passenger door open. She slammed it closed and leaned back in her seat.

"You know," said Dr. Helms "This is the last place I'd find one of my past patients in this weather." She rubbed one of her eyes. "Anyway, let's get over to Fitzgerald's."

"What do you want me to know?" asked Marie.

"Things about Thneedville," answered Dr. Helms. "I was there through your pregnancy. He was there for your vow renewal. We'll always be loyal to you and your family."

Marie blinked back tears. Then she watched Thneedville become blurred from her vision.

Fitzgerald's house was next to the courthouse and now it was pressed against the concrete. His hair seemed whiter and thinner. His hands were wrinkled. Marie hadn't seen him in person since the wedding.

Dr. Helms had leaped out with her umbrella over Marie as they ran inside. The door was already unlocked and Fitzgerald was making jelly coffee.

"Oh," he said softly. "I haven't seen you in ages Mrs. Once-ler."

"Hello again," chuckled Marie. It was pleasant to hear another friendly voice.

"Why are you all wet?" he asked.

"She was out in the rain," said Dr. Helms quickly. "You have any towels?"

Fitzgerald slowly went to a hall closet for some. When Marie was wrapped up, he drew chairs out and they savored the warmth. Even the coffee was welcomed. The rain drummed against the roofs and faintly the ringing of steel was heard.

"So what is it?" Marie asked. "What did you want to tell me?"

"Not good things," said Dr. Helms.

"I've gone to restaurants for my suppers and heard complaints," said Fitzgerald. "All of them about you and him. Mrs. Once-ler, your family is in danger. I fear they'll try weeding you out."

Marie rubbed her head. This only tangled her curls. Dr. Helms readjusted her ponytail nervously.

"Furthermore," Fitzgerald continued. "That O'Hare is trying to remake Thneedville. Anything with Mr. Once-ler on it is being destroyed and people love it."

"I'm not surprised," replied Marie. "Both of our children are missing and I'm sure that-"She nodded to herself. "-They're with him."

"Out there?" asked Dr. Helms. "In the…"

"The wasteland," finished Fitzgerald.

"If I showed the paper our wedding license that wouldn't change anything," sighed Marie. She tapped her mug as the coffee wiggled.

"I don't think they'd change their minds about Once-ler," said Dr. Helms sadly. She patted Marie shoulder.

"Mrs. Once-ler is there anywhere your family can go where you're safe?" asked Fitzgerald.

"No place is safe," cried Dr. Helms. "They can't live here! They're old family is likely at their old home! The wasteland is disgusting! What can they do?"

"I don't like it any more than you do," said Fitzgerald defensively. "I was just asking. I hate hearing those things about this family! I haven't seen any evidence that Mr. Once-ler would hurt his lady or children!"

Marie cringed at the sudden tension. She listened for ten minutes to them debate. Could the family hide in Thneedville? Was there a safer town, but what if the towns rejected them? She had to get up and stare out the window to ignore it. The half-finished wall stared back. She wondered if Once-ler was looking out a window too.

For now, Marie just wanted reuniting. She wanted her family together, but Thneedville was tearing them apart. Thneedville had cast Once-ler out. It had frightened Chloe and probably angered Natalie away. She wanted to join them.

"That's it then," she thought. "None of us should be here."

"What else could they add to this creepy city?" Dr. Helms finally yelled. Marie jumped! "What if they add a camera system and watch us all! We're all in danger, but The Once-lers especially!"

"And so far nothing can work!" Fitzgerald huffed. "It's hopeless right now Doc! Hopeless! I'll die of old age here! I'll never see trees again! All of the youngsters and next generations will never see nature!"

"Once-ler didn't mean for this," shouted Marie. There was silence. "If he knew what would happen, he wouldn't have pressed forward! If there's nowhere for him, then I'll be nowhere with him! I won't have him face this alone!"

"What do you mean?" asked Fitzgerald. "You're not saying that-"

"I'm going out there."

With that, Marie shed off the towel and revealed her wrinkled clothes. She grabbed her mug and chugged it down.

"Marie you can't go!" pleaded Dr. Helms. "I won't have my patients suffer!"

"Please!" snapped Marie. "I need to keep us together because I know Once-ler will try to keep us here for safety! He-he doesn't know about any of this! I haven't been able to contact him! I need to tell him and we'll work it out!"

"So the rumor of cutting phone calls is true," muttered Fitzgerald in worry.

"I don't care about my phone being disconnected anymore!" continued Marie. In fact, the city had disconnected all phones from the outside. "If that's what happened, then I'll still walk to my old house! The police hate us! My old friends-Arabella hates me! I helped O'Hare without knowing what he intended! We won't stay here!"

"But, Marie, "sputtered Dr. Helms. "Arabella asked me to help you out of jail! She doesn't hate you! And you can't live out there!"

"If we found the Truffula Forest, then we will find somewhere else to live!" said Marie more calmly.

"Sounds irrational," cautioned Fitzgerald.

"It's rubbed off on me," chuckled Marie. "I do appreciate you both wanting to help, but there's no other way. I don't want you in danger either. So thank you for everything. Thank you Judge Fitzgerald for letting my husband and I have the wedding we didn't have the first time."

She hugged Fitzgerald and patted his back. Dr. Helms blinked back tears. She shook her head.

"Dr. Helms, what can I say?" said Marie. "You were my first friend in Greenville. You helped me during my pregnancy and the twins. I couldn't ask for a better gynecologist or pediatrician."

Dr. Helms stood up and wiped her eyes. Marie warmly embraced her. She would miss her the most. She'd never forget the lady who helped women and children.

"I wish this hadn't happened," she choked.

Marie nodded. She whispered something and then paced towards outside. Dr. Helms swallowed and laughed.

"What'd she say?" asked Fitzgerald.

"She said she was going to have a happy walk in the rain," said the doctor. "Her last night in Thneedville would be of irrational optimism."

Indeed it was as Marie smiled and remembered dancing with Once-ler in rain showers. She slept peacefully and it was incredibly early in the morning when she awoke. It was still dark out, but she bundled up and left because her food supply had gone low. So she slowly walked for the store to find more for her old home. She ignored the car lot selling new vehicles, a parking lot in the works and a new pizza chain going up. The garland and red bows around light poles were bleak.

When Marie entered the store she picked up a basket and quickly made her way in each aisle. She grabbed two boxes of Empty-O's cereal and marshmallows, the only thing that hadn't changed. She also found canned veggies and the milk. Maybe it was jelly, but it was better than nothing and who knew what was left. She was feeling better as she waited in line because she'd pack up and leave! The teenager who was helping Marie kept looking sadly at her.

"I just want to say how sorry I am," said the cashier.

"Oh," said Marie with surprise. "Thank you."

"I mean, what kind of child deserves a dad like that?" The girl took the money Marie handed.

"Excuse me?" asked Marie after a pause.

"About your kids," the girl continued. Her braces gleamed. "Such a shame they have that man as their father. I can't imagine the pain they've gone through. Tell me, and don't be afraid to admit it, when he was angry did he hit?"

"Hit? Hit them…me?" stammered Marie.

"Yes," she continued. The cashier took some dollar bills out for change. "I've been attending college and studied human behavior. Is it possible The Once-ler has some anger issues-"

"I don't care what you studied!" Marie shouted who lost her patience. The cashier and customers stopped to stare. "Once-ler has never abused me or his kids in any way! I don't want any of this pity or jumping to conclusions!"

"I was just-"

"Well don't! Just stop it all!" screamed Marie. "Stop acting like you know everything about him! Why don't you get your facts straight first?! Why can't you all have logic?! Has having bottled air made you stupid?! Leave my family alone!"

"Is this Stockholm Syndrome?" asked the cashier quietly.

"Augh!" roared Marie. "We were never abused! Why don't you ask him?"

She swiped the paper bags, ran down the streets, then under the new tunnels and highways. The cold air nipped her skin. Marie couldn't believe how short her patience had been, but of all the things! Once-ler being physically abusive? They had arguments, but they never hit each other! The worst thing was when he grabbed her wrist that one time! That was it! If he had done anything like that, she would've left!

She had to stop at a corner and saw some work. Construction was going up for a new resort. Marie stared at the preview advertisements. It was a map, vivid with color of a snowy hill and a beach. That part didn't make sense! If one slope was covered in snow and other was a beach for sunbathing then how would each season be in harmony? A young man with a toolbox passed her and grinned. It was Natalie's necklace rescuer; Fred. He noticed Marie examining.

"Looks fun huh?" he said. "Can't wait to start buildin' it. We're gonna have plastic plants and these metal flowers popping up!"

"You look like quite the construction worker," sighed Marie. She dropped her bags and stretched her arms.

The smile from the nineteen-year-old faded. He leaned casually against the chain link fence.

"What's wrong?" asked Fred. "Doesn't it look beautiful? Sure, I'll miss going to dance clubs, bustin' my moves and practicin' guitar, but my Normie and I will be happy someday here in Thneedville."

"My best friend plays guitar," said Marie. She began to smile. "I remember when he first bought. He was eleven."

"Eleven? I got started just last year. He must be a pro-fesh-o-nahl!"

"Well he's better with music than me," said Marie modestly.

"Anyway," continued Fred. "The more good stuff we've got, the better we'll be."

"Not always. It can get messy." Marie cleared her throat.

"How so?" Fred swiped his nose. "Is it that 'less is more' thing? Cause I've never got it."

"It's not that," replied Marie. "What I mean is simplicity can be better. It seems like we're rushing for the next thing when we should just take our time."

"Okay," admitted Fred. He seemed confused, but earnest. "Well what do you think of this On-"

"Hey you!" came a yell.

Marie and Fred saw O'Hare in a blue suit. His braces were off, but his glasses were smaller. Behind him were two large bodyguards with hardhats and little sunglasses.

"Get away from my work Ms. Greedy!" O'Hare shouted. "Scram!"

Marie picked up her bags and dodged away. Fred raised a hand, but stopped. He was sorry to see her go. He thought her eyes looked familiar.

"What was she talking about?" hissed O'Hare waving his arms. "Trees?"

"No, said Fred annoyed. "Why'd you do that to her? She wasn't startin trouble!"

"She's done enough being that old Once-ler's slut!"

"She wasn't that," defended Fred. "Don't call women things like that! It ain't fair!"

"I hope she leaves!" O'Hare clenched his fists. "Then that'll be the last time someone goes."

"You want what?" Then Fred found himself pinned against the fence by the guards and O'Hare right in his face.

"To make sure no one ever leaves town," snapped O'Hare. "But if not, then we'll make sure of it."

"How?" asked Fred.

"We'll have eyes all over the city," O'Hare smirked. "No one gets out and no one gets in."

"What?" asked Fred incredulously. He knew only a little about The Once-ler. "All this over some guy's business mistake?"

"He's more of a menace," sneered O'Hare. "Thanks to him though I am having the success. If he and his family intervene then things are going to get messy. Don't get any ideas either kid! Now get back to work!"

Fred wasn't sure what to think, but his curiosity of this Once-ler was intriguing him. When the day was done he planned on going to his new apartment, have dinner with his girlfriend and then see if her family still had the newspapers thanks to the poor recycle system in Thneedville.

"Time to figure it out," he thought.

The room felt very warm. Once-ler blinked and rubbed an eye. All he saw was his nightstand with his journal on it and the stained glass window. Then he sat up in shock and screamed. This wasn't the factory! It was his tent-cottage! The canvas walls, the wooden floors and he was in his old bed.

"Honey?"

Once-ler turned to his left and saw a face he loved. Marie was half-awake and looking concerned. Still baffled, Once-ler yelled and accidentally fell to the floor. The covers tangled in his long legs. Marie sat on her knees.

"Once? Did you have a nightmare?"

Once-ler rubbed his face and panted. He was ready to speak when he heard a cooing. Stumbling over his feet, he scurried for the green door and was in the nursery. There was Natalie standing up and bouncing. Chloe was sitting up and giggling at her sister.

"Girls..." breathed Once-ler. He knelt by their crib and started laughing.

He leaned in and kissed their heads. Tears began to fill his eyes. He lifted his twins out and raced for the front door.

"Once-ler what are you doing?" asked Marie.

He didn't listen as he pushed the door handle down with his elbow and saw life again. The grass was green, the sky soft blue and the Truffula Trees were standing! Their colors of purple, pink, red, yellow and orange were healthy and calm.

"It was a nightmare," laughed Once-ler.

"What was?"

Once-ler felt so joyful he could've cried. Marie stood there in the doorway looking just like she always did when she awoke. Oh, but she still looked wonderful. With Chloe tugging his collar, Once-ler dashed to Marie for a group hug. He smiled and kissed her head. Marie took Chloe and Natalie squealed. The parents laughed and Once-ler sighed contently.

"Everything's fine now," he said. "Better than fine! Yes sir!"

"Of course it is," chuckled Marie. She kissed her husband's cheek and he could feel her messy curls tickle.

Suddenly the breeze kicked up and become icy. Once-ler blinked and stared at the sky. When he averted back to Marie she and Chloe were fading. Like a reflection on the water rippling away from a stone the two were gone. Once-ler yelled and began to plead.

"No! Marie! Wait! Chloe! Natalie please don't leave me!"

He hugged Natalie tighter, but she disappeared just like her family. Once-ler screamed louder and stood rigid from hearing a loud crash. When he turned around, the trees were falling down. The cottage suddenly crumbled into dust. Metallic thuds rang out quick as gunshots. Once-ler felt hot all over and his pajamas changed into his old denim, striped clothes.

Then how he ran! He ran and climbed over the fallen tree trunks while screaming for his girls. The sky turned reddish-gold with rays in a darker shade. Then right on a hill he saw a terrible sight. It was himself in his green suit, twisting around on one foot with a bent leg and then his double-neck guitar blasted one note. Pleased to see more trees fall from the note, the greedy Once-ler pulled out a Truffula Fruit from his pocket and bit into it with juice leaking.

"You!" Once-ler growled.

The Greedy Once-ler smirked and tossed the fruit aside. He wiped the dark juice off his lips. He strode towards his doppelganger and swung his guitar around his back.

"It's all so gratifying isn't it?" he said. His voice echoed.

Once-ler saw more trees falling and growled again. He hated the sight so badly that he wanted to strangle his look-alike. The Greedy Once-ler wolf-whistled, smirked again and his pupils widened. Marie was slowly coming towards them. Once-ler was shocked and then disgusted! She was in a green dress which was incredibly short. Her cleavage peeking out, thighs exposed and she was hugging herself. Not something Once-ler's Marie would've worn.

"Cheer up Babe," said Greedy Once-ler. He chucked her chin and grabbed her wrists. "I'm here."

"Don't touch her!" snapped Once-ler and he grabbed Marie towards him.

"I can do whatever I want," said Greedy Once-ler. He trailed a finger down Marie's arm.

"Once-ler," whispered Marie anxiously.

"Leave her alone," hissed Once-ler to his foe.

Oh, but Greedy Once-ler laughed and suddenly dragged her away. Once-ler snatched Marie's hand, but felt something sticky flowing at his ankles. The black river was slowly running and he could've sworn he heard Natalie screaming. Then there was a loud buzzing and it went on…

There was a buzzing noise and that's when Once-ler awoke. The relief of it being a dream faded when he saw Natalie standing in front of his face…with his electric shaver!

"Natalie!" yelled Once-ler and he sat up. "What are you doing?"

"Time to mow the grass," she said bluntly.

"No, no, no," he said. He grabbed it from her. "No shaving today! No sir!"

Natalie and Chloe had been playing all day, but Chloe had gotten tired. So Natalie had decided to fix her dad. To no avail, she was disappointed. She hated that mustache and beard. He looked so old!

"When Mom comes here, she better tell Dad to clean up!" she thought.

"What time is it?" mumbled Once-ler. He massaged his hair back.

"Morning," said Natalie. "When can you get Mom?"

"I was going to try calling again," he said warmly. He lifted Natalie up for a hug. "Missed these hugs," he added.

"You have no idea," said Natalie dramatically.

Once-ler laughed and kissed her cheek. Then he went downstairs. Chloe was stretched out on the sofa and looking through a comic book.

"How'd you sleep?" asked Once-ler as he headed for the kitchen.

"Alright," said Natalie.

"Morning!" called Chloe who jumped up. She hugged Once-ler's legs and went back to her reading.

"Morning back," called Once-ler who managed to pat her back.

Natalie leaned her head against his shoulder. She wanted to spend some alone time with him. So she was happy that Chloe was busy reading.

"That sofa is hard," she said while scrambling down. "Chloe kicks!"

"And you snore like me," teased Once-ler.

"I don't snore-wait, like you?" Natalie questioned.

"Pretty close," chuckled Once-ler.

"I want to be just like you when I'm big," said Natalie innocently. She pushed a chair to the counter.

Once-ler felt uncomfortable as he searched for some good eggs. He really hoped she was joking. He couldn't find deforestation as mentoring.

"Why?" he cleared his throat.

"You're the best," said Natalie. She pushed a bowl to him. "You're very smart. You're brave. You dress nice. I wrote all about on my card."

"What card?" Once-ler cracked an egg with one hand.

"We were making cards to read for people for the holiday celebration. Everyone gets on stage and does something. Miss McFuzz said it had to be about family so I wrote about you. Chloe did too."

Once-ler smiled. He couldn't describe how touched he felt. Then he noticed Natalie's perkiness end and she rubbed an eye.

"If Mom can come she can bring them," he grinned.

"She can't," whispered Natalie. "They got ripped."

"That's okay," reassured Once-ler. "Accidents happen."

"Our teacher ripped them."

Once-ler cocked an eyebrow and placed the hand (still holding the whisk) to his chin. Did he hear that right?

"She did what?" he asked.

"Miss McFuzz took our cards, mine was green, and tore it in front of the class. She didn't want us to talk about you."

Natalie sniffed and Once-ler felt upset. He couldn't say he was too surprised after all about Thneedville hating, but this? A teacher doing that in front of a class and making his twins feel bad? Natalie looked like she'd cry again. Once-ler didn't hesitate to hug her close.

"I'm sorry Sweetie," he whispered. He felt a tear against his shirt.

"I don't want to go back to school," Natalie whimpered. "Boys teased Chloe and made her do dares so she got in trouble. I got thrown in dirt. The bullies took my necklace and flung it over the fence. Look."

She pulled her nameplate necklace from her collar. Once-ler tilted it up and noticed the faint tire marks. He spent nearly $70 for that jewelry and someone had to tarnish it! It was the only necklace Natalie wore so it was devastating!

"She slapped me too," she added.

Her confession was now revealed. She did have it worse since she was rebellious. Once-ler forgot about making scrambled eggs and lifted her up again.

"That's why you want to stay here," he said. He felt Natalie nod against his neck. "You know what?"

"Huh?" muttered Natalie.

"I think I want you stay here longer. Until New Year's Day!"

"Can I?" gasped Natalie.

"Can I too?" added Chloe. She had just peeked around the corner.

"And I'm going to make sure no bad guys bother you again back there," continued Once-ler. He scooped Chloe up too.

"Really?" squealed Chloe.

"And I know what I want for Christmas," chuckled Once-ler. "I want you to make new cards of someone you love. Just like you were doing in class."

"I will!" chorused the twins.

With that, Once-ler was nearly choked from their hugs, but felt more light-hearted than he had in a long time. He didn't know how he'd stop the people, but he'd try to find a way.

That same afternoon Marie rolled up her clothes and stuffed them into her suitcase. She stuffed Once-ler's clothes that still hung in the closet with hers. She knew she wouldn't come back. She wouldn't ever come back unless Thneedville changed. Her suitcases were bulging with items and the zipper was almost bursting. The condo would be empty, but she kept the key. She wasn't sure why, but she did.

As she paced down the block, she passed Spreckles Diner and suddenly faced another dilemma. She felt an icy drop on her cheek. She glared at the sky. With a sigh, she slipped into the diner. She sat at the closest table and shook her head at the waitress who almost approached her.

"Not going to eat here," Marie mumbled.

The whole place was sky blue and advertised O'Hare Air. The rotating dessert display was gone and the floors had been ripped up for new tile. The booths had new cushions. Marie put her head down on the table and wished things weren't changing.

"Oh hello," said a voice.

Marie peeked through the curtain of her hair. She narrowed her sight at him. Dr. Dake was standing before her. He was smiling.

"What?" snapped Marie. Her attitude was running on full steam.

"I just wanted to see how you were," said Mr. Dake kindly. "I feel terrible of how things have turned out. You were in the newspaper this morning."

Marie didn't want to see it. She knew it was about her arrest. She twisted around in her seat.

"I really am sorry for how everything's turned out," continued Mr. Dake. "Your husband had a lot of potential."

"Husband?" said Marie incredulously.

"Well last I heard. It makes sense why Mr. Once-ler didn't look comfortable when we first met him and Dessie and I spoke about marriage. So…"

"What do you want?"

"Want?"

"Do you want something from me?" Marie faced him again. "I already got pulled into helping O'Hare and I regret it."

"I'm not that heartless," said Mr. Dake as he slipped into a seat. "I read the newspaper and after it was revealed who you were, I remembered you. I understand the connection between you two. I want to apologize-"

"Apologize," huffed Marie. "I don't want an apology! Once-ler needs apologies! He needs thousands from everyone who stepped over him; from all the kids who teased him, his family, and from this wicked dystopia!"

"I'm sorry Ma'am," Mr. Dake stammered. "But please understand it, when I say how I wish things hadn't happened this way. Maybe I can help your family?"

"We don't need it! Once-ler didn't need your help then so why do I?"

Mr. Dake tapped the table awkwardly. Marie suddenly felt sorry. Maybe he was trying to be kind, but she couldn't risk anymore. She had enough to risk.

"So it's raining again," he finally said.

"I'm waiting for it to stop," answered Marie. "It looks freezing."

"Can I order you a lunch?" asked Mr. Dake. "Help out my co-worker's lady?"

Marie thought about Will and their dinner. The diner was making her remember many things: Will's visit, The Once-ler Supreme Shake, the old jukebox, the twins dancing. She didn't want to stay despite the rain.

"I'm thinking that I should-" she began.

"Well, well, well," interrupted a deep voice.

Mr. Dake sighed and Marie cringed to see Mr. DeSalvo. He was there with a toothy grin. He straightened his tie. With his disturbing expression, he slid next to Marie.

"Nice to meet you," he said. "I was wondering when I'd run into you."

"Dessie," warned Mr. Dake.

"I-do you remember me?" stuttered Marie.

"A bit now," said Mr. DeSalvo. "You were fatter last time." Then he poked at Marie's belly.

"Don't touch me," hissed Marie.

"Dessie leave her alone," Mr. Dake warned again.

"I'm sure this may come as a surprise to you but, maybe not if the papers are true," chuckled Mr. DeSalvo. "Maybe I could give you a new job to help support your little angels."

"I don't want it," ordered Marie. "Now get out of my way."

"I'd give you thousands if you'd join my little club of women," said Mr. DeSalvo. "I haven't had a blonde in a long time."

"No," Marie shrieked. "Never!"

"Don't bother her Dessie," snapped Mr. Dake. "Leave her be!"

"Can't you see I'm talking to a client?" laughed Mr. DeSalvo. "I think she'd-"

He never finished because Marie slapped him! A red mark stretched across his big cheek and he recoiled. Mr. Dake was surprised, but amused! Marie growled and climbed over the table to escape. Then it became more chaotic! Mr. Desalvo grabbed Marie's skirt and pulled hard in rage. Marie lost her balance, pushed on the table's end and tumbled with it to the tile floor! She fell on her side and rolled to her stomach. The salt shaker, condiments and napkins littered everywhere. Mr. DeSalvo leaned and tried grabbing her again.

"I said leave her be!" snapped Mr. Dake. He jumped out and helped Marie up.

She grabbed her luggage and dodged for the door. The patrons yelled, a waiter tried shoving Mr. DeSalvo back. Marie was pelted by the freezing rain.

"Get back here Tart!" shouted Mr. DeSalvo. He followed her down the street.

"DeSalvo!" yelled Mr. Dake. "Stop it now!"

A bus screeched as they passed. Marie nearly slipped on the sidewalk. Mr. DeSalvo yelled while Mr. Dake tried pulling him back. It wasn't as easy as expected because Mr. DeSalvo was so burly and huge!

"Mrs. Once-ler!" called Mr. Dake. "Go to him! Tell him his old PR Team exposed your kids!"

"What?" screamed Marie. She halted and stormed back. "What do you mean?"

Mr. Dake gave his old business partner a punch and grunted. The tall man collapsed onto the concrete.

"They were at a bar," panted Mr. Dake. "McPherson…Findow and Thompkins. I met them before, but one of them-Findow-whispered to me about something. He admitted the team did it for more money, but he felt terrible. I guess I witnessed a confes-"

Poor Mr. Dake was swiped at the ankles. Mr. DeSalvo was seething and swearing at Marie. She started running again. The brute gripped on her dress with both hands and yanked! It tore apart at the seams.

"Let go," wailed Marie. She kicked him in the mouth, causing blood.

Mr. Deslavo recoiled and wiped his mouth. Marie lost no time to kick his thick gut and she was off again. Mr. Dake sat up and smiled seeing her escape. He knew any truth would fall on deaf ears and it would be covered, but he hoped his old partner would find new beginnings. Maybe start a new business and not have to fear paparazzi.

For Marie, she scurried her way to the exit; the curved road with spigots installed and drains. If construction workers saw her, she didn't notice. She didn't stop at the slope like Chloe. She didn't kick stones away like Natalie. She hurried down that familiar path and coughed. Any hint that cars and Thneed Trucks used it were gone. Old and small houses that were built outside of Thneedville for workers were abandoned. It was the same way. Road to North Nitch, left at Weehawken and sharp right at South Stitch.

After having a coughing fit, Marie sat down. She had found rest by the Super-Axe-Hackers. She felt limp seeing them and rested her head against one suitcase. She needed to breathe. She wondered how her children had felt seeing those machines again.

"Yes," she said breathlessly. Her eyes began to close. "They are here. Where else would they be?"

The night was draped over the valley. The putrid air curled and billowed. The factory stood lonesome, all black and foreboding like a villain's castle. In time, the dim figure of a woman came to view. She was walking slowly. Her eyes glanced at the sign post. "Beware, Danger, No Entry, Stay out, I mean it!" The last one had a skull painted. She sighed and trudged. Her feet were aching and her side felt sore after the long walk.

Then something else appeared; someone who was tall and coated in greed. A dear figure was dragging an ax out of the Lerkim to destroy factory parts for new sign post. Eyes of blue looked up and widened.

"Once?" Marie whispered.

"Marie?" Once-ler gasped.

The luggage and ax dropped! Then in the fading land two adults rushed to each other. They both kicked up dust, and nearly hit the gate. Once-ler yanked the gates open, only to feel the chains tightly abound. Annoyed, he fumbled with lock, but lost patience. Marie had arrived to the gate with her breathing shallow and before she could take another step her husband slipped between the entrances. He had to duck under the bolt, but he was soon free.

So suddenly, it was reuniting! Once-ler grabbed her waist, pushing her into him, with his other hand roughly caressing her jaw. Marie threw her arms around his neck. Without a second to lose, they both kissed hard.

"M-Marie…" said Once-ler breathlessly.

As for her she was staring at his tired face. What had happened to her Once since she last saw him? He still had dark circles under his eyes like his overworked days. His hair seemed shaggy and grimy. The biggest surprise was he had a coating of facial hair! He just looked so sickly and worn that she felt shattered. She wished she could kiss him again and it would just heal all his pains.

"Once, what has happened to you?" she whispered.

"Me? I'm-are you coming in?"

Immediately with arms around each other's' shoulders they hurried inside. Once-ler quickly locked the door and they went to their old room. Marie's suitcases were dropped and instantly the couple was holding each other again. Their chests heaved deep breathes. Marie buried her head down.

"How did you get out here?" he asked.

"I found you," she swallowed. "I had to find you."

"Why?" whispered Once-ler. "Marie why?"

"We can't take it anymore," she answered. "We're not staying in Thneedville."

"So I've been told by two girls."

"They did come here. I knew it."

Marie felt instant relief and more when those long gloves of her beloved were pulled off. Once-ler ran his fingers through her curls which felt matted. She unbuttoned her heavy, black coat. She remembered her torn outfit and looked over her shoulder.

"I got a tear down my dress," she sighed. She felt him kiss her head.

"You want a shower?" Once-ler asked. "I can sew it while you do?"

She wanted to tell him what happened, but she wanted to savor the moment. Then of course she felt his hands again. Once-ler found the back buttons and slowly undid them as he gently peered over her shoulder. Marie nuzzled against him one more time. Then she pulled away and slipped her worn dress off. In an odd combination, she went to the bathroom in her boots and slip dress. Once-ler's eyes scanned her figure, catching her brassiere strap of emerald.

"Hasn't changed," he thought fondly.

Marie wanted to hurry with her bathing to talk with Once-ler. So she didn't bother asking for her toiletries and used Once-ler's. She heard him enter and put a suitcase on the counter. She decided to speak up, but Once-ler spoke first.

"Natty told me of stuff," he said. He dug in the suitcase. "She and Chloe got picked on."

"That's one of the changes," answered Marie as she scrubbed her arm. "I see you've made one too."

"I have?" Once-ler chuckled. He knew she'd add to the complaint list of his appearance. "I didn't notice."

"You look older than rugged," Marie replied. "If that's what you're going for."

Once-ler smiled, but he did catch his reflection. He didn't want to admit he hated seeing his face; a destroyer's face. The water was shut off. By then, Once-ler had reluctantly found a spare Thneed. He ducked his hand behind the shower curtain with it. After Marie grabbed it, she quickly kissed his knuckles.

Once-ler sat by the window while he waited. Despite how cold it was, he felt better in his old pajama bottoms. Marie had dressed herself in one of his dress shirts, boxers and socks. "Always ridiculously long," she thought fondly as she tugged the ankles.

Pleased to be home, she crawled into bed; that old bed that went downriver. Once-ler pulled the curtains and joined her. They both curled up and sighed.

"It feels like it's been forever since I shared a bed with you," whispered Marie.

"It has," agreed Once-ler. "I missed calling you." He squeezed her a little tighter.

"It's a long story," admitted Marie. "I'll tell you my half." She held back a yawn.

"After you sleep?" Once-ler lazily explored down her hip.

"Don't touch my legs," warned Marie. "I haven't shaved since Monday."

"You're still beautiful," whispered Once-ler.

By morning, Marie felt refreshed. Dressing in warm clothes, she hiked the staircase connected to the factory. Her suitcases felt lighter and her soul felt healing. The twins were waiting with breakfast and happy to see her. Once-ler wasn't seen. It turned out yesterday had been a fun day after Natalie's tears.

"We made a fort," said Chloe. She was so excited she couldn't sit still. "We made it out of pillows and cushions! Daddy said we could sleep there until we had good beds again! We went out walking with scarves around our mouths to not get bad air. Oh and Daddy and I found a s-"

"Hey," interrupted Natalie. "I want to talk to Mom." Pleased that Chloe was quiet, she continued. "Mom, can we stay here until New Year's Day? Dad said we could and he'd take care of everything."

"He did?" questioned Marie. She stirred the porridge with maple syrup. "Well, we're going to talk about that."

"Can you ask him for us to stay here forever?" Natalie held her bowl out for more. "I like this porridge better than there."

"Just let me do the talking Cutie," reassured Marie. She felt a tug at her skirt. "Yes Sweetheart?"

Chloe looked around and then cupped her hand like sharing a secret. Marie knelt down. Chloe held something in her palm.

"Can I show you this?" she whispered.

"What is it?" Marie didn't know what to expect. Then she gasped!

"Daddy found this," Chloe said. She held the seed out. "He wants me to go back and plant it."

"Oh well...we'll talk it over," said Marie hesitantly. "That's good though! Mr. Lorax would love this!"

He would, but now there was another dilemma. Go back? Marie wasn't sure now. Would The Lorax understand why they didn't want to? Could they plant it out here? She sat at the table and slowly ate. The twins were chugging down milk like newborns. Then footsteps fell and Once-ler came in. Suddenly the twins howled with laughter. Marie saw why and she stifled giggles.

Once-ler had shaved the beard, but he had a mustache and it was distracting his features. He looked like an old-time banker and all he needed was a cane! He ignored them and served his breakfast. It brought up memories of eating oatmeal in the cottage. Marie cleared her throat and stood behind him.

"New look," she giggled.

"Maybe," said Once-ler. He scratched his face from the shaving.

"You look like The Lorax," said Chloe innocently.

"I know," answered Once-ler. "New look Sweetie."

"Dad," said Natalie bluntly. "Make the mustache go too."

"Uh, no" laughed Once-ler. "You girls will just deal with it."

Marie twisted around to kiss him. She tapped her chin thoughtfully and sat back down. She grinned and crossed her legs.

"It's tolerable," she said slyly. "Just be careful when you sleep tonight."

"Why?" asked Once-ler.

"Just because," giggled Marie. Chloe giggled too, but Natalie was dead serious.

"Dad, don't make me get the shaver again."

Once-ler ignored them and waited for the festivities to end so he could chat with Marie on serious issues. As for the twins, they were extra cheerful and dug through the boxes of ornaments all day! Box after box, they found the green, red and gold bulbs, the tinsel and gold star. Marie and Once-ler unpacked the suitcases, but kept a close eye. It was the first time in a long while that Chloe and Natalie were extremely close. They bounded around the living room and tackled each other with hugs and tickle fights.

Then it all peacefully ended. The twins slept in their fort of cushions with the lights twinkling. Thneedville in the distance was shining like gold. Marie was so happy to see the California King Sized bed. She fluffed her pillow and breathed the sheets that had been cleaned. She overheard a buzzing again and smiled. Once-ler came out minutes later and was clean shaven. Even his hair was trimmed to its old style. He wiped his upper lip.

"The majority won," giggled Marie.

"Shut up," mumbled Once-ler half-heartedly.

Marie was happy to see his clean face. He looked like himself again. He dropped next to her on the loveseat. He lolled his head to her shoulder and held her hand.

"I'm still hoping I can make things right," he said.

"I know you are," said Marie. She smooched his forehead gently.

"I want to fix Thneedville too so you're safe there," he continued.

"You'd be arrested," warned Marie. "Besides, things have happened; a lot of bad things."

"What else?"

"Honey, the twins have been bullied, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Your PR team revealed the girls are yours and who I was."

Once-ler stiffened and sat up. Marie noticed his eyes narrow and knew she was just getting started.

"What's more," she continued. "After that happened, Natalie's picture was in the paper, paparazzi asked questions and I told them I was with you. I asked them to leave us alone, but that didn't stop the rumors. Rumors that you and I were…were…that I was a prostitute you paid. Yesterday DeSalvo tried taking me for his, and chased me. That's why my dress was torn. Mr. Dake helped me and told me about the PR. One of them felt guilty for sneaking."

Marie swallowed a lump in her throat. She closed her eyes and breathed shallowly. Once-ler's expression became worse.

"So with those rumors going around I was arrested when looking for Chloe when she found you. Natalie and I were questioned, but I doubt that cleared anything up. By the way, Arabella Diller bailed us out before leaving permanently and after I asked her for help with searching for Chloe. I talked with Dr. Helms and Judge Fitzgerald. The city hates us all! They want us out and think us dangerous too. They're doing everything to wipe out the past. They've removed you from history. They tore that plaque out dedicated for you on that hill. They're making way for O'Hare Air."

If there was anything else to say, she couldn't. Once-ler got up and paced for the door.

"Where are you going?" Marie called.

"Nowhere," he replied. "Don't worry."

Marie was worried. She hoped he wouldn't act irrational and just understand why they needed to stay. Thneedville wouldn't change. If there was hope of change it was in a far future. She went into the bathroom and searched for her razor. If Once-ler had shaved, she needed to fix her legs!

Once-ler did go down the factory. He wanted to destroy that smug painting of himself and break the counter. His office was dark and dusty. The model for Thneedville was perched upon his desk. It hadn't moved since the big fight. He glared at it and felt pure hate. He hated Thneedville. He hated everything about it. Then with a heaving breath he grabbed it. He glared at it for a long time.

SMASH!

The model broke into pieces of clay and plaster. Trembling, he kicked it across the room and it scattered! Then he collapsed in his chair and quietly wept. He never asked for this. He missed Mustache so much now and wished he had better advice. His temper and sadness was a cauldron of despair. After a long time, he slammed the doors and searched for another place! He wanted to take his girls and leave! Get out of the factory and burn it down with countless matches! Burn the past away and start new. He knew he couldn't though. This was their only home and he felt in charge to fix his mistake. Until he developed a better plan he searched for a new place to calm down.

While that happened, Marie had freshened up. She waited for Once-ler, but had a feeling he was too upset. After what seemed an eternity, she searched for him. The twins were fast asleep in their fort. Marie wandered to the office. Her boots clunked on the dusty floor.

"Once-ler?" she called.

Her voice echoed. Something crunched underfoot and she picked it up. It was a thick chunk of plaster. It was striped and green. Marie noticed another piece that was white and another of grey. That's when she saw the model.

"Oh, Once-ler," she said sadly. "I'm so sorry."

The white chunk had been for a marshmallow factory and the grey was part of the wall. The green had been for his new headquarters. It wasn't fair for any of them. For Once-ler, all those big plans he had, had backfired. She could only imagine his pain. Hurrying out, Marie went to find him. All the while, she checked everywhere she could think of. She soon grabbed her coat in case she went outside.

"Once-ler?" she called out. She had searched into the factory room. Strangely, it was breezy within the darkness. The machinery stood like tombstones; cold and silent. She felt a gush of cold air from above and she looked up to see the ceiling exit ajar.

"What is he doing up there?"

She carefully climbed the iron ladder and her blonde head poked out into the night. Sure enough Once-ler was outside. He was sitting on the edge which made Marie nervous. They were above the area that had a Thneed sign and where the track would go with empty carriers. The four stovepipes loomed above them and the countless windows were blank instead of lit.

"Just what are you doing out here?" asked Marie as she buttoned up her coat.

"Nothing," said Once-ler slowly. He didn't seem surprised to see her and swung his legs onto the roof. "Well nothing for you to worry about."

"What were you thinking about?" shivered Marie. She didn't know how her husband could bear the chill as he met her.

"You three," he said as he held her hands. "I-I should've known."

"Honey we didn't know that would all happen," began Marie. "If anything-"

"Just let me say this-" interrupted Once-ler. "What are you doing?"

With Marie freeing her hand and touching her husband's freckled cheek, then Once-ler was trying to explain what he thought over while trying to stop her, somehow led them into going in circles.

"I'm trying to say-" continued Marie who wasn't taken aback by their odd dance.

"No! What I'm saying-" Once-ler started again.

"Don't apologize for any-"

"I want to say-"

"Would you please-"

"Marie I'm trying to tell you that-"

"I'm not mad at you for-"

"What I'm sayi-"

"Once, this isn't-"

"I love you and I've missed you too much!" said Once-ler desperately and he squeezed her hands. That stopped the "dancing."

Marie pressed her lips together and nodded. She had to swallow the lump in her throat. "I know you do-and did."

"I was thinking you three should go back becau-" Yet Once-ler didn't get to finish again for Marie suddenly screamed and shed tears.

"Don't do this to us!" Her voice echoed and slowly faded. "I didn't run away you on one of the hottest summer days I can remember, just be sent away from you! I know you've meant well, but the girls need you and you need them! I've n-never seen you like this!"

She noticed Once-ler was tearing up too. She shook her head and rubbed her damp cheekbones. She breathed twice to calm her voice.

"With what's happened to all of us, you most of all, I don't want to leave. Your daughters don't want to either! This is too hard! Thneedville, the valley and the factory; all of it! You can say all you want, but no matter what, you'll still make it hard for your girls to leave. It'll be just as worse to leave you; my best friend. I won't do it!" Marie had a fresh river of tears and they dripped from her jawlines. "It'll be the most difficult thing…"

Suddenly she was yanked forward and encircled by her lover's arms. One exposed hand pulled the wavy curls behind her ear.

"Then don't go," he whispered gently.

"Wh-what?" stuttered Marie.

"Marie I don't want to lose you again," said Once-ler. He rested on one knee as if to propose a third time. "I'm sorry for all of this. It's my fault, but I want to make things right. I'm not letting you three go. So I'm asking you to stay in this horrible place while I fix my mistakes. Thneedville is much worse and-at least we'll all be together. I can't lose you all again."

No matter how irrational it seemed or what anyone would say, Once-ler had changed his mind. He had felt better in the past days. Now he knew he couldn't send his wife or children back to Thneedville. Not with those newspapers, the bullies or the cops. They were more in danger in the enclosed world. Also the ache he had for the past months had begun to heal and he finally understood why.

"Do you have another ring to propose to me with?" asked Marie with a weak chuckle. She didn't need a fourth with the three rings he gave out of love.

"No," he said.

Marie knelt down with him and let her hands wander to his face. They smoothed over his cheek bones, his ears and into his hair. She pulled him into a warm kiss. Once-ler allowed his mouth to shape with hers, nearly shuddering with emotions. When they pulled back her lips quivered and little stars peeked from the smog.

"I love you and missed you too much," she answered.

"I know," said Once-ler softly. "I'm not leaving you three again. I care too much for you."

"All four of us do," chuckled Marie.

Somehow, though it seemed bleak, Once-ler realized that it would get better because they cared. It would…
