Annie lifted the hem of her shirt and looked at herself in the mirror. From this angle, nothing seemed different, so she turned to the side. Perhaps it was just her eyes playing tricks on her, but it did seem that her stomach protruded a bit more than usual. She laid her hands over her abdomen and closed her eyes, imagining the life that grew inside her.
"Your father will be thrilled. Did you know that?" She wondered if she'd get big enough to kiss her own stomach. Instead, Annie settled for blowing her child a kiss. "But he has to get back here first. Think we'll hear today?" The intercom next to the bed blared. "I think we have our answer.
"Yes, this is Annie Cres – Odair."
"Ma'am, they're back."
Her heart sang, and she missed the woman's next words. "I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that." She listened for a moment. "Yes, thank you. I'll be right there. No, I'm fine with seeing any injuries that they might have. I just want to see my husband."
Before the woman could argue with her, Annie sprinted out of the room, not bothering to close the door behind her. She ran down the long, gray corridors, her socks slipping against the concrete floors. It didn't take her long to reach the hanger bay. "Finnick!" she shouted the instant she saw the hovercraft. Her stomach sank as two men carried a stretcher down the loading ramp. "Finnick?" No, please no, it couldn't be.
"Ma'am, we need you to stay back. Don't worry, we'll take good care of him."
"Finnick? What's wrong with him? What happened?"
A set of strong hands grabbed her arms and pulled her away from the blood-stained stretcher. "You need to stay calm, Mrs. Odair. You have your baby to think about."
"I need to make sure my husband's all right as well. Let me go!" She struggled, but the attendants were too strong. Annie screamed when she felt the needle pierce her skin, and her muscles went slack.
He looked terrible. Bandaged cuts crisscrossed his face and extended down his chest and beyond the waistband of his pants. Annie searched for a long moment to find an unbandaged portion of his face large enough for her to kiss. "How are you feeling?" she asked.
The doctors had told her that he would be slipping in and out of consciousness, so she wasn't surprised when he stirred. "Annie?" His words were obscured by the bandage, so after a quick glance over her shoulder, she peeled it off.
"Yes?"
"I don't feel good."
She smiled. "You look worse."
"Really?"
"Yes, but you're still cute." She took his hand, but pulled away when he hissed in pain. "Finnick, I need to tell you something."
"Mmm?"
"We're having a baby."
His eyes opened wider. "That's fantastic!" Finnick tried to sit up, but Annie pushed him down before he could hurt himself. "That's great, Annie!" A few drops of moisture gathered at his waterline, but he blinked them away before they could fall.
"I'm excited too." She leaned over his hospital bed to kiss his lips.
His smile when they separated. "I love you so much." Already, he struggled to keep his eyes open.
"I love you too, and I look forward to seeing that reaction again when you wake up not remembering a word of this." He frowned, confused at her, and she gave him a kiss just above his left eye. "Good night, Finnick. I'll be here when you wake up again."
