A few days pass after the night of the party. After going back to her mother's room, Lapis hasn't left the place. She just stays on the bed under her blankets all day. Blue Diamond occasionally stops her work to take a look at her daughter, always trying to make her get out of the bed.
"Lapis?" Blue Diamond sits on a chair next to Lapis's new bed.
"Hmmm." Lapis mumbles from under the blankets.
"How are you doing?"
"Awful." Lapis keeps her head hidden. "I hate myself!"
"Please, don't say that." Blue Diamond places a hand where Lapis's head is supposed to be.
"You should hate me too. I ruined the dance and the party." The heir hugs her own legs. "I shouldn't have come back to Homeworld."
"Lapis, you made a mistake, but we can still fix it if you get out of this bed and come with me." Blue uses a sweet voice to make Lapis calm down, failing at that.
"What is the point? I'll never fit in and you know that. I'm not like you." Lapis hugs her legs even closer to her chest.
"You are not."Blue sighs. "You remind me of Pink though." Blue caresses her daughter's head on the blanket.
"I wish I could have talked to her… asked her how she handled all this pressure." Lapis whispers.
"I also wish you and her could have spent more time together." Blue stands up, trying not to cry next to her daughter. "I'll be in my control room if you need anything."
"Ok." Lapis says before her mother leaves the room. "I'm sorry." The blue heur whispers to herself before getting up from her bed and running towards her mother's secret room. She knows she shouldn't do what she is about to do, but her mother will have to understand that it's for the best.
Lapis can't stand that pain anymore. She knows it is selfish to do that, but no one understands how she feels except for her. All the things that happened to her were so overwhelming that she can't find another solution to her problems. The ocean gem is just going in and out. Whatever is happening after that is a brand new page in her life.
Once she gets to the room's door, she can hear some noises coming from inside and between those she can hear a voice. A voice she knows really well.
"Peridot?" Lapis opens the door, making the green heir jump. "Is that really you?" She asks while Peridot puts some things back in their places. "What are you doing here?" The blue gem looks at the other heir, confused.
"I should ask the same." Peridot crosses her arms behind he back. "How did you know about this place?"
"My mother told me a long time ago." Lapis looks around. "This is the second time I've been here in my entire life."
"This is my second time too." Peridot shrugs.
"Did Yellow Diamond tell you about this place?"
"I found it by accident at the day of the party." Peridot looks away from the other gem. "I got lost and ended up in your mother's room in the first time. I saw you and her that day, but you didn't see me…"
"Of course we didn't. There are curtains hiding the secret door."
"I heard what you said… about forgetting me." Peridot sighs.
"You did?" Lapis takes a step back. "How much did you listen?"
"Enough to know how much you are suffering." Peridot reaches eye to eye with Lapis. "Lapis, I'm sorry for ignoring you and being awful while we were dancing. I just couldn't talk to you. I didn't know what to say."
"I know I should have told you about the Crystal Gems." Lapis embraces herself. "If it makes you feel less angry, I don't like them at all, I know that they don't care about other gems. All wanted was to come back home… I never believed in Earth in the first place. But when that little boy helped me…" She smiles a little bit. "I wanted to help him too. It wasn't about the Earth and the Crystal Gems exactly, it was about him. The fact that he is a Crystal Gem is not in my control. I asked him to come with me, but he didn't want to come so I tried to use Earth's ocean to get back home." She takes a deep breath while holding her hands together. "But it didn't work." The ocean gem sighs.
"Don't you have wings?" Peridot asks confused.
"My gem was cracked. Didn't I tell you that?"
"Not sure if you did." Peridot scratches the back of her head.
"Anyway… then I told him my gem was cracked and he said he had healing powers." She looks at Peridot. "I'm here now because of him and that is what I want you to understand."
"I was angry, but it wasn't because of the Crystal Gems-" Peridot looks away from the blue heir.
"It was about what then?" Lapis shouts a little bit.
"I was angry because you didn't trust me! After everything we have been through, after everything I told you, you didn't trust me to talk about this." Peridot crosses her arms.
"I didn't know how to bring up the subject. Telling you he got me out of the mirror was already complicated. How was I supposed to tell 'hey, my gem was also cracked and he healed it? No one would ever believe me, not even you." She reaches eye to eye with the green gem. "But… I'm sorry for lying about my past on Earth and for putting myself in danger back that day just to get your attention." She scratches the back of her head. "And I'm sorry about the ball. I ruined our dance."
"It doesn't matter now." Peridot takes a deep breath. "I wasn't acting nice at that party. I was being a jerk." Peridot laughs a little bit.
"But you were right… to be angry at me." Lapis starts to cry. "Sorry." She wipes her tears away with her powers.
"The important thing now is that you are here." The technician smiles while placing her hands on her chest. "I miss you. I miss your company. After my anger passed away, I felt so lonely. But I was too proud to go after you to apologize…" She rubs her eyes. "Every time I saw you around the palace, I wanted to hold your hand and tell that everything was going to be ok. During the dance I wanted to tell you how beautiful you looked in that dress." The green gem sighs. "I regret it so much now. What I'm trying to say is that I'm sorry… Sorry for ignoring you, avoiding you and leaving you alone when I promised to be with you whenever you needed me."
"I forgive you." Lapis walks towards the mind eraser and starts to write something with it. "I know you are not a bad gem. Just a little bossy and too proud to admit you are wrong."
"Do you still want to do that? Forget about me?" Peridot looks at the memory machine.
"Yes, I do." Lapis looks at the other side of the room. "If I forget things will be easier for both of us."
"But I will still remember!" Peridot points at herself. "This is selfish!"
"Maybe it is. But you are better at dealing with emotions than me, Peridot. You can hide them, something you've been doing your entire life. I can't do it anymore. It's driving me crazy. I am tired of this way of living." She turns around look at Peridot.
"But now you have me." Peridot gets closer to the blue gem. "I'm not leaving anymore. I promise."
"That is the thing, Peridot. You are so right when it's about machines, resources and kindergartens… but you are so wrong about this." Lapis places a hand on Peridot's cheek. "We will never have each other." She places her forehead against Peridot's gem.
"You are the one who is wrong." Peridot gets her lips closer to Lapis's. "We can be together if you want."
"That is all I want." Lapis closes her eyes right before Peridot's lips touches her own. It is a soft kiss, but with all their feelings showing through it. "But, unfortunately, I can't have all I want." She gives Peridot a sad smile. "I…" The ocean gem looks into her friend's eyes. "You are the one I have been waiting for my whole life." She makes a big effort to hold back her tears.
"I can tell the same." Peridot smiles.
"But…" Lapis gives the green gem another kiss before taking a step away from her. "Just once, I have to do the right thing." The ocean gem places a hand on her friend's green gem. "Since that day we fused, I've been trying to fit in and be a good heir. Ignoring this feeling I started to develop towards you."
"I know you have been trying to be a good heir." Peridot looks into Lapis's eyes. "And you are doing great!"
"You don't have to lie. I ruined everything on that private party. Things have been so hard for me since I got here." Lapis takes a deep breath. "Being around you and not being able to show how I feel has been the most difficult thing I've done since the day you found me." The blue gem turns her back at Peridot.
"So, tell me." Peridot holds Lapis's hand and turns her around slowly, making the blue gem look at her. "How do you feel?"
"After that kiss, you already know how I feel." Lapis starts to cry again while walking towards the machine.
"I want to hear it from you." Peridot says, really serious.
"Now that I'm going to forget, I can finally tell you." The blue gem gives her friend a soft smile while sitting on the machine. "Tell you three words."
"Why are you still talking about forgetting things?" The green gem starts to panic.
"Peridot, after I do what I have to do, please, don't keep looking back at the past." Lapis wipes out her tears away.
"Lapis, don't." Peridot looks at the button the ocean gem is about to press. "Please, don't do that." She runs towards the machine in the middle of the room.
"I love you." Lapis presses the button right before Peridot holds her arms. In a second Peridot's vision gets blinded by the light that comes from the mind eraser, making her faint because of the amount of energy the machine released.
Once she recovers her senses, Peridot is back on her bed and her mother is sit next to her.
"Peridot?" Yellow calls the gem. "Are you ok?"
"Since when do you care about how I feel?" Peridot shakes her head. "Why are you here anyway?"
"What?" Yellow stands up in surprise. Without understanding what her daughter was talking about. "What do you mean with 'since when I care'?"
"You never come here and you never care about me. Why are you acting like you care all of a sudden?" Peridot stands up and touches her gem. "Did I crack my gem while I was training? It hurts."
"Training?" Yellow raises an eyebrow. "What are you talking about?"
"What are you talking about? Peridot raises an eyebrow. "You are acting different today. Should I call your pearl?"
"No!" Yellow shakes her hands in front of her. "I will just…" She looks at the door. "Go to my room." She takes a deep breath in attempt to hold her emotions from showing.
"Good. I need to prepare for my Earth mission now " Peridot turns her back at her mother.
"How was it?" White Diamond asks once Yellow steps out the room. "Is she alright?"
"White…" Yellow holds back her tears. "She was affected too."
"How much does she know?" White freaks out.
"I don't know. She keeps talking about training and that I don't care about her." Yellow closes her eyes. "I lost her." She places her head on his shoulder, looking for a place to hide her tears.
"Yellow…" White place a hand on her head. "We will figure out what to do."
"There is no way to revert this. Blue and I tried to fix that issue, but it's impossible to recover the memories with the machine once they are erased." Yellow steps back. "Why did they go there?"
"You saw the cameras. Peridot found the place by accident the other day." White tries to place a hand on Yellow's shoulder, but she walks away.
"Why didn't Peridot run away from the light?" Yellow walks towards her own room.
"We will never know." White sighs.
"Where is Blue?" Yellow looks at the Blue's room.
"In the throne room. She keeps saying the same thing every time I go there. She says she shouldn't have left her daughter alone." White takes a deep breath. "She blames herself, but she is angry with her daughter too."
"Did Lapis wake up?" Yellow widens her eyes.
"Not yet. But we know that once she does, it will be like when she got here. She will think she was on Earth. She wanted to erase her time on this 'new Homeworld' as she wrote in the machine's settings." He shrugs.
"What is the point of Blue being angry if her daughter won't even know what she is angry about." She closes her eyes. "But Blue never makes sense…"
"Are we still going to send them? To Earth?" He looks at his daughter's room.
"Why not? Lapis will still remember Earth once she wakes up and Peridot can go there with or without her memories. She still remembers her mission from what I saw." Yellow takes a deep breath.
"Yellow is right." Blue shows up on the end of the hallway. "They can still go, but we will have to erase that Jasper's memory if we are still sending her."
"Blue is right. She was from Peridot's crew and will ask questions when she notices they don't remember each other. " Yellow looks at Blue. "After, we erase the pearls' memories about the two and then we destroy the machine."
"Why the Pearl's?" White asks confused.
"They know too much. If we let them with their memories, they can tell our children, causing a lot of trouble for us and for Lapis and Peridot."
"That is our only choice." Blue shrugs. "What is done is done. We can't change that."
"All this effort to make my daughter a good empress to end up like this." Yellow rolls her eyes. "All this time trying to be a good parent for her to forget." She laughs. "It's my destiny, isn't it? Pushing away everyone I care about."
"It was not your fault, Yellow." White tells her.
"I helped build the mind eraser. How am I not the one to blame?" Yellow enters her room, leaving Blue and White alone.
Once she gets inside, she breaks down. The daughter she knew was gone forever.
