Chapter 37 – The Article

Honor Student Is Hostess

No doubt as you read the title of this article you are somewhat confused about it all. I am here to set the record straight. I have received a very enlightening look at Ouran's honor student Haruhi Fujioka, and there are several things that have come to light, things that no one outside of the Host Club and their families know about. This editorial has been done with the full backing of the Host Club and with permission from Haruhi, herself. Yes, Haruhi Fujioka is in fact a girl.

Over one year ago, Haruhi Fujioka entered music room three with the intent to study, but instead found six male students waiting expectantly for their female guests to arrive, thus opening the popular Ouran High School Host Club. Instead of studying in peace, she, through a series of events, knocked over a renaissance vase the club was intending to auction off for charity. This put her in debt with the club, and Haruhi believes in paying what she owes. Initially the club hired her as an errand boy, but she soon worked her way up to host. Many members initially believed she was of the male gender, however one by one, they began to realize she was female. By the time the truth came to light, she was already hosting and could pay off her debt faster by talking to the customers than she could by running errands. The gentlemen of the club kept her secret and she was able to pay off her debt last year. She would like to stress that she was not forced, but chose to stay and pay her debt.

Through the process of working with each other and getting to know one another, all of the members have become friends with the honor student and would do what they could for her. Haruhi continues to dress as a male student to this day because she was afraid everything would change and her position would be terminated from the club. She tells us of the other Host Club members and her customers, "They may be annoying and crazy, but they are still my friends; and I didn't want to hurt my customers because some of them have become my friends too. I like where my life is right now. Before I met the guys in the Host Club, I didn't have many friends and had my own little world. I was so focused on my studies and becoming a lawyer like my mother, I didn't really think about life. They helped me to find that balance between studying and living."

Honor student Haruhi Fujioka has worked hard on her grades in order to maintain her position in the school so that she can continue her education here at Ouran. She would like to follow in her mother's footsteps, who we found out was a defense attorney and did many cases pro bono and is currently deceased. Haruhi is currently ranked first in class 2-A.

She is supported by her friends in the club, her father, and her boyfriend. Haruhi has been dating fellow host and friend, Yasuchika Haninozuka for almost one year now. They met while he was still in his third year of middle school and she was in her first year in high school. When I inquired about their relationship, I was informed that they met the day Yasuchika showed up in order to fight his brother Mitsukuni "Hunny" Haninozuka, but the sparks had not started to fly yet. A few days later she arrived at his home in order to receive tutoring from his brother and Yasuchika asked her on a date. Haruhi agreed and they are still together. I did ask about feelings for the other members of the club, and she informed me that she has had no romantic attachments to anyone else in the club and would not. She loves and cares for the man she has dubbed "Chika" and will continue to date him.

Kyoya Ootori was questioned about the relationship and had this to say, "Haruhi is a bit naïve and ignorant when it comes to feelings of a romantic nature. She can read people like a book, but amorous feelings towards her… well unless it is spelled out for her in black and white and thrust right in front of her nose, she will probably miss it. Yasuchika was the first person that was bold enough to ask her out on a date." Apparently there have been feelings towards the female host in the past, but she was clueless about them. Everyone has moved on and is currently happy for the couple.

It is only natural that one would question Haruhi's motives for dating someone from a powerful family such as the Haninozuka. She stated that she does not care about the power or prestige and is only interested in Yasuchika as a person.

I questioned Yasuchika about how their relationship is perceived by his family and he told me emphatically, "My brother is over the moon. He has always loved Haruhi as a sister and was ecstatic when we started dating. He actually wanted to throw us a party because of it; personally I think he wanted the extra cake. Satoshi says that Haruhi is the best thing to ever happen to me and likes the man I have become since dating her, and I have to agree with him. Takashi also likes Haruhi and is happy for us. He considered her a little sister as well and says I have a peacefulness I didn't have before her. I have to agree with that also. My parents, aunt, and uncle love Haruhi and have no qualms about her social status. So all in all, everyone in my family loves the fact we are together."

Does Haruhi's father like the fact she is dating someone so wealthy and powerful? Apparently to him it is not about the wealth and power either. As a cross dresser who works at a bar downtown, he believes Yasuchika is only acceptable as long as he treats his daughter well. In fact, Fujioka-sama had a talk with Yasuchika and apparently it was enough to frighten our karate captain. Yasuchika promised that he will not do anything to hurt Haruhi. As the only link the patriarch has to his late wife, he takes his parenting duty seriously and status does not matter to him. His daughter's happiness is the only thing he cares about.

There had been a rumor circulating that Fujioka-sama has ties to the Yakuza. The answer to this question was an emphatic no. Upon further research and investigative journalism, I have found that he has no association at all, and therefore neither does Haruhi.

There was also a rumor that Haruhi cheated on her entrance exam, but this is impossible. The exam is changed routinely, and has a minimum of ten monitors in the room to ensure that no one is cheating. There is no possible way for a student to cheat and gain entrance into Ouran. Haruhi got into the school by her own hard work and determination.

If you are wondering if she is only using Yasuchika, it is no. As she pointed out, "Why would I use him when there are others that could probably do more for me like a first son?" She has had her pick of hosts and the one that she chose in the end was the second son to the Haninozuka family. She is also not blackmailing the other hosts. That would be another impossibility since Kyoya Ootori is the vice president and has more information on anyone in this school than a mere honor student without a computer can uncover.

Her closing remarks at the interview were, "I didn't intend on lying to everyone. If someone would have asked if I was a girl, I would have told them, but everyone in the school assumed I was a boy. I didn't want to hurt anyone, and if I did, I am truly sorry for that. I just want to set the record straight and protect the people I care about, besides I should have ended the secret a long time ago. It will be nice to be able to be free to hold Chika's hand or spend time with him without anyone questioning it or making up silly rumors." She states that she had no intention or desire to lie to her fellow students or to hurt them. She did lie, but through this interview she is attempting to come clean and clear the air.

Many things are going to come out with this article. There will be a couple of people who will scoff and try to spread rumors about Haruhi and possibly the others in the club. This is the truth. This is the uncensored interview. You can either judge her for this one lie she committed, or you can judge her on her actions and words of the past. Everyone assumed she was a boy and no one thought to ask. Do we not hold some of the blame?

An expose like this is not easy to face. Haruhi came in with her head held high and wanting to speak the truth. Haruhi is a girl, a top student who worked hard to gain entry into Ouran and to maintain her scholarship. She has been dating Yasuchika Haninozuka for the past year and the family accepts her. The Host Club has guarded her secret and protected her for over a year. Now it is your turn. What will you do? Good luck to you Haruhi Fujioka and Yasuchika Haninozuka.
