I was pulled out of the main room and into a narrow corridor. I could still hear the screams coming from behind us as I was dragged away. It was dark and I couldn't see who was pulling me or where we were going.
Whoever was holding my hand released me suddenly and I stumbled forward. I put my arms out, feeling the walls, trying to find an exit. The screams and music had faded into the background. The walls were rough, exposed brick I guessed. I felt for my phone in my pocket and found nothing. I cursed. It must have fallen out in the confusion.
I weighed up my options, trying to work out the best course of action. I could go back, hope that the massacre was over and that I'd be able to get out that way. Or I could go forward and maybe find a way out. I decided to move away from the main room. If the vampires were still feeding, it was safer to stay away.
I moved cautiously down the corridor, keeping my arms outstretched so that my fingers brushed against the walls. The further I went, the more confident I became, moving quicker as I searched.
I registered a cracking noise as my foot came down, a second before I fell. The floor gave way around me and I fell into the abyss below.
I landed in a heap, my leg underneath me, twisted at a painful angle. My head collided with the wall and my vision blurred before fading to black.
When I came to, I wasn't sure how much time had passed. The hole I'd fallen down was just as dark. A minute could have passed or an hour. I tried to move and a sharp stab of pain immediately tore through my leg. I cried out and went still, waiting until the pain subsided to a dull ache.
I rested my head against the wall and swore under my breath. I was screwed. No one knew where I was, no one would come down here. I was going to starve to death, alone in this pit. I closed my eyes, trying to keep the impending panic at bay.
"If anyone can hear me… any of you… please come find me…" I whispered to myself, concentrating hard and hoping that, despite the block, it would get through to them somehow.
Somewhat calmed, I forced myself think. I'd survived before the originals had come into my life, I could get out of this myself. I knew my leg wouldn't take too long to heal, assuming that part of the spell was still working. I looked up, trying to work out how far down I was. There was no way of telling, everything was just pitch black. Could I climb up? I'd have to try.
I forced myself up to my feet, my leg crying out in protest. I gritted my teeth, ignoring it, and began to feel around me, reaching up to see if I could feel the floorboards above. If I stood on tiptoes, I could just about brush the tips of my fingers against the decaying wood but I couldn't maintain that position for very long before my legs gave way.
After a few attempts to grab hold of the floorboards and falling to the floor, I finally managed to get a decent grip. I wasn't sure if the boards would hold my weight so I pulled myself up as quickly as I could and squirmed across the floor until I felt I was a decent distance from the hole. I lay on the ground, breathing hard.
I lay there for a while, catching my breath and waiting for the pain in my leg to fade to a tolerable level. When I felt that I was able to move again, I struggled to my feet and limped down the corridor, unsure if I was heading towards or away from the main room.
Eventually I came to a door. I could hear voices coming from behind it, angry voices. I crossed my fingers that I'd find help behind it and pushed it open. I let out a sigh of relief as I saw the party room, mercifully free of corpses. Marcel was sitting on his throne, a few of his vampires at his side. Klaus was in the middle of the room, shouting. The boys were hovering uncertainly in the background.
"How could you lose her?!" Klaus roared.
"I am not responsible for your people, I have my own to look after."
"You let her into one of your murder parties. If she has been hurt, it your responsibility and your life will not be worth living!"
I leant against the wall, trying to keep myself from falling over as I watched. Marcel got to his feet and squared up to Klaus who glared at him. I cleared my throat quietly. Immediately, everyone's head shot up and turned in my direction.
"hi…"
The siblings darted towards me. Kol reached me first and wrapped his arms tight around me, holding me close.
"Fuck, I thought you were dead," he said under his breath. I wasn't sure but I thought I saw tears in his eyes. Elijah carefully pulled him aside and checked me over.
"Are you alright?"
"I think I've sprained my ankle. I fell through the floor."
He put an arm around me, shouldering my weight, and turned to Klaus.
"Niklaus, I'm going to take Elena home. Feel free to join us when you're finished with Marcellus." Elijah and Kol led me out of the building. Finn followed quickly and got the car door for us. I let them stow me in the back and sat in silence until we reached the house.
"You may want to wash up Elena, you're a bit… dusty," suggested Finn. "I have a feeling Klaus will want to 'talk' to you when he returns."
"I can't wait." I awkwardly got out of the car and limped inside. Kol reached out to help me but I shrugged him off. I hobbled upstairs and was heading to my room when I heard a noise coming from Rebekah's. I knocked lightly before entering. She was lying on her bed, crying.
"Rebekah?" She bolted upright when she heard my voice and sped to my side, hugging me tightly.
"Oh god, Elena I thought you'd got killed and it was all my fault… I'm so sorry!"
"It's okay Rebekah, I'm fine. You didn't know what kind of party it was. It's not your fault." I wiped away her tears. "I'm going to go take a bath. Don't worry about me, okay? I'm really not worth crying over."
She gave me a teary smile. I rubbed her shoulder gently and headed to my room. I started running the bath and was about to get in when I heard Klaus shouting.
"KOL! REBEKAH! ELENA! GET DOWN HERE!"
I groaned and got up, limping down to the courtyard where Klaus was stood. Fury radiated off of him. He managed to restrain himself until we were all assembled in front of him, but I could see the strain in his face and his fists were clenched.
"What. Were. You. Thinking?" he said through gritted teeth.
"You told us to get away from you, so we did," Rebekah said simply.
"You put yourselves in danger!"
"We went out for a drink. We didn't know that it was that kind of party!"
"We are on the run Rebekah –"
"WE ARE ALWAYS ON THE RUN!" She glared at him. "We have been running most of our lives. Because of you! No one else, just you! And I will be damned if I am going to live like a prisoner because you have daddy issues!"
"Elena almost died because of you."
"I almost die every week," I chimed in. "Rebekah didn't force me to go out, she asked and I said yes."
"She should have known better than to take you out, especially to Marcel's. And you should have known better than to agree to it. All three of you are acting like children!"
"We're not going to apologize Klaus," said Kol. "We follow you, we run when you tell us too. Elena had to leave her home because of you. You can't control every aspect of our lives. We are going to continue to do what we want, to live the way we want. You may as well just stick us back in the coffins, because it is the only way you will be able stop that."
"Yeah. Kol is right. Either take us as we are or get rid of us." Rebekah said. "You make all these claims about family, but family doesn't treat each other this way. You don't want brothers and sisters, you don't want friends. You just want pawns you can control."
Klaus regarded them for a moment then stormed off, returning a moment later with a dagger in his hand. He came up close and rested the tip of the dagger against the hollow of Kol's neck.
"You want to go back in the boxes? Is that what you really want because I am more than ready!" He stepped back and looked up at the balcony where Elijah and Finn were watching. "I do not need any of you! I will dagger you all and take Elena and keep surviving until Mikael is dead!"
I stepped forward, pulling away from Kol and Rebekah. I stood in front of Klaus, looking him dead in the eye.
"If you go near any of them with a dagger, I will make sure that you never have a moment's peace. I will do everything I can to make your life a living hell. I will run, I will fight, I will cut my wrists open in front of the hungriest vampire I can find. Fuck, I will even find a way to tell Mikael where you are and make sure that he hunts you to the end of the earth. So put that dagger away and stop acting like a spoilt brat who's not getting his own way."
He let out a snarl and made as if to hit me. Elijah, Finn and Kol all appeared in front of me, blocking him. We stared at him with gazes' cold like stone. He seemed to deflate suddenly, body slumping slightly as if all the energy had been sucked from him. He walked off silently, disappearing into one of the rooms.
A/N: This was not how I intended this chapter to go. However Elena's trip down the hole did give me an idea for a potential plot point should a sequel ever materialize.
