3 weeks later on Friday…
After the incident with my father and the talk that Castle and I had; life passed without more extreme exciting events. Castle and I fell on a routine where I would spend 3 nights at his house and the rest of my week I would spend with myself at my apartment. Alexis seemed to be okay with how the things were going and I was glad. She was a sweet girl and I probably wasn't the best role model for her, but I did my best to be a better woman at the time where she could look up to. A few days before her birthday that was on Sunday that week, Alexis shyly came to me when I was reading a file from a new client, who probably was going to give me a lot of work…. Stupid trophy wife who insisted in getting caught showing the gardener a good time; just she could show her husband that someone still wanted her. Anyway, Alexis came to me with a face so red, from being shy, which made me thought that she did something wrong and wanted me to clean up her mess, something that I would do without even thinking.
"Hey Kate" She said after cleaning her throat a lot of times to be sure that I knew that she was there.
"Hey Alexis, there is something I can do for you?" I asked taking off my reading glasses.
"Yes, I wanted to ask you something." She said while looking to her hands.
"Go ahead…" I said gesturing to the chair by my side so she could sit and ask whatever it was that she wanted to ask.
"So…hum… I wanted to ask you with you wanted to have a lady's day, you know? Just the two of us, w-we could go shopping or we c-could go to a spa, and to the cinema, or something like that, t-to celebrate my birthday. I am only asking because I am sure my mother isn't coming to my birthday, again, and dad can't do this stuff with me…"
"Sure, good idea Alexis, I would love to go out with you. We can do anything you want, just make a list of what you want to do and we can schedule. You can do one thing in the morning and another on the afternoon; if it's a spa we have to decide soon so I can call the spa that I sometimes go and know the owner and schedule it."
"Okay… wow that was easier than I thought." She said getting up.
"Alexis, you call always ask me anything, if I can't do, I will tell you. I don't get offended easy, so don't worry." I said taking her hand and squeezing it like a reassuring gesture that I was saying the truth.
"Thank you Kate, you don't know how much that means to me." She said squeezing my hands back.
So, on Friday, I asked Castle if she could skip class so we could go out. He, of course, said it was okay. When we were getting ready to leave, the bell rang. Castle being the only one in the house dressed enough to answer the door, went to get it.
After I got ready, I walked to the door with my high heels on hand and my favorite Chanel bag, when I got there I saw Castle talking to someone at the door and by the tone of his voice, wasn't someone who he liked. I put my high heels on and went to the door, before getting there, I announced my presence by asking who was at the door. The person passed through the door, and entered the house like she was the owner of it.
"I am Meredith, Alexis' mom, and you?" She said giving me her hand to shake it. I looked at her and realized that she indeed looked a lot like Alexis, and both had their characteristic red hair.
"I am Katherine Beckett, Castle's girlfriend." I said giving her a firm hand shake and looking at Castle who had an angry look on his face, I also remembered how she usually wasn't around for Alexis, and I felt a little protective of both of them. "I am sorry, but you arrived at a horrible time, would you like to come back later? Alexis and I have plans, and Castle is behind in his book, so he can't give you attention now. Maybe on the way, my driver can leave you at your hotel?"
"Driver?" She almost screamed at Castle. "Richard, are you paying a driver for your flavor of the month?" Meredith said.
"Meredith, Kate doesn't need me to pay for her driver, she can pay it herself." He said almost proud. "And she isn't the flavor of the month, we have been dating for 4 months, and I love her." Castle said walking to me and hugging me from behind.
"How can she pay a driver?" Meredith asked.
"I am lawyer, my billable hour is 350 dollars, and I am a workaholic, so do the math of how much money I gain per day." I said with a voice full of sarcasm and a fake smile on my face.
Alexis, probably hearing the commotion, came downstairs to see what was happening.
"MOM?!" She screamed when she saw Meredith. "What are you doing here?"
"Well darling, I came here to celebrate your birthday with you."
"Really? You came just to see me on my birthday?" She asked almost not believing.
"Of course, do you want to go shopping?"
"Hum… Well, Kate and I are already going shopping and then we are going to the spa that she knows the owner, so they made a special program for us because it's my birthday. Maybe you could come with us? Kate, can my mom come with us?" She asked excited and at the same time shy.
"Well, I am sure I can organize something with the owner, one more can make a big difference. I will just have to pay a little more, no problem. Maybe you want go just the two of you?" I offered since she rarely saw her mother.
"No Kate, please come with us. We always have so much fun when we go shopping, and you organized the whole spa program, I would like the two of you to come with me."
"Okay then, the two of us will go. Meredith, what is the hotel you are staying so we can drop your things?"
"I always stay here! Richard, please, do something about this woman that acts like she owns this place!" Meredith said angry. "You always liked when I stayed here." She said with a seductive voice.
"Ew mom, stop! Please respect Kate wishes and sleep at a hotel, I am sure dad can pay for you if you can't. And also, dad and Kate are very happy; please don't get in the middle of it." Alexis plead.
"Okay, if you insist." Meredith said with an annoyed voice.
"Well, now that everything it's settled, are you ready Alexis?" I asked and she nodded her head informing me that she was. "Since you are, let's go! We have a lot of stores that I want to show you Alexis, and today you can choose anything that you want, whatever the price is, and I am going to give it to you!" I said picking up my bag. "Castle, see you later." I said giving him a kiss.
"I am sorry about Meredith; I didn't know she was coming." He whispered when he gave me another kiss.
"That is okay; at least she came to see Alexis." I whispered and gave him another kiss
Later on that day…
"Wow Kate, this is my best birthday ever!" Alexis said hugging me when we were leaving the spa. "Thank you so much, I love you." She said and I stopped breathing; it was the first time that someone that wasn't my boyfriend, parents or Lanie said that loved me, and it gave me warming feeling on my heart. Alexis didn't need to love me, she didn't need to say anything because I would still do those things for her, I was dating Castle and I wanted her to be happy. So, it felt so much better when she said, since she didn't own me anything, she just truly loved me.
"I love you too Alexis." I said hugging her back and kissing her forehead. I said that I loved her back just so things wouldn't be awkward, but I didn't know if I loved her. In fact, I didn't know when you loved someone, what did you feel? I made a mental note to ask Mackenzie when you knew you loved someone at my next session with her. It was funny how you forget little things like that, when you stay numb for over a decade.
Snapping back to reality, I observed Meredith face when Alexis said that she loved me, and let me tell you, she wasn't happy. During all the time since we left the loft she has played nice, something that I was glad since it was a special day for Alexis and I wanted it to be perfect.
When we arrived at the hotel where Meredith was staying so we could drop her off, I asked Alexis to stay at the car and I would help Meredith with the check-in.
When we arrived at the hall of the hotel, before we could make the check-in, I stopped walking and asked Meredith to give me a minute so I could say some things for her.
"You better talk fast, because you have just one minute." She said looking annoyed with my behavior.
"I wanted to thank you for playing nice today; I know that you are not pleased with my presence, but you have nothing to worry about. I am not trying to steal Alexis from you, I don't want to be her mother, I just want to her friend while you are away, you will always be her mother. And Castle, well, we are in a serious relationship, and you had your chance but you screwed it up, let me have my chance." I said serious.
"I don't know who you think you are, but I am sure that soon enough Richard will dump your sorry ass… and Alexis is needy, just because you gave her attention she thinks she loves you. Don't think so highly of yourself. Now let me go to my room since you made Castle and Alexis not let me sleep in my own house!" She said turned around and started walking when I took her arms and pushed it making her stop and look at me. "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?" She screamed.
"Look Meredith, you don't want to be my enemy, I don't play fair. I am a bitch just like you… the only difference between us is that when I found the right guy, I discovered that I had to stop being a slut when you didn't and consequently lost him. You don't want to play this game with the person who invented it. This is a warning, try to hurt me, or Castle, or Alexis and I will show you how dirty I can play, and trust me, you don't want to discover it." I said with my court voice. I looked around and saw that one of the securities from the hotel was coming towards us since Meredith had screamed when I grabbed her arm. "Goodbye." I said and left the hotel.
When Alexis and I arrived home, she started telling happily Castle of what we did on our day; I gave him a small kiss on his lips, a fast "hello" and rushed to the bathroom.
When I entered the bathroom, I took off my clothes in the speed of the light, and I looked at myself at the mirror and started passing my fingers through my words and taking deep breathes. I felt the rush to write a new word, but, this time was different, I didn't want to hurt myself and forget about what have happened, I wanted to make something that I would remember of that day, like a souvenir of a happy moment. I searched in my head for a word and the only one that came was… love. That day, now I can see it, was the day that I rediscovered the meaning behind the word love.
Hello people! I bring good news! I passed the tests that I did in the begging of the month, so now, you guys are reading the story of a possible law student! But, I can't really do the course since I will only graduate from High school next year, but, it's good to know that I can pass if I want to.
Anyway, I would like to apologize since I didn't post this weekend and I have nothing to say in my defense, only that I started reading some Twilight ffs and I didn't want to stop to write a new chapter. Also, I would like to apologize for last chapter, It wasn't very good, I know it, so, I am really sorry.
At least but also important, this story is walking towards the end, Kate is changing and soon she will get to the point where she understands that sometimes you have to let the past go so we can live our present and want to live our future.
