It had been over a week and Jefferson had still not been found.
Peter had thrown his glass of water across his apartment, narrowly missing the lost boy who had come to report that Grace had also gone missing. Wendy had to hide her smirk behind her hand as the glass shattered against the wall. She was pleased that Peter had not been able to get his hands on the young girl but the delay on his vengeance only resulted in Peter's temper worsening as the week went on.
Wendy woke up to find Peter scowling intently at an unlit candle that sat on his coffee table. She didn't say anything straight away, just watched as his frown deepened.
'You still can't light it?' She asked quietly. Peter closed his eyes and sighed deeply before opening them to look at her, his anger brimmed just under the surface of his carefully constructed face. Wendy shuffled so that her legs dangled over the side of the bed.
'I've always been able to use magic, no matter what world I was in.' Peter said through gritted teeth. Wendy watched as he tried again and then growling he stood up and paced across the apartment.
'Maybe you're over thinking.' Wendy suggested. Peter stopped pacing to throw her a dirty look. Mulling some thought over in his head, Peter strode over to the bed.
'And how do you suggest I stop over thinking?' He said, his voice low. He leant over her and rested his hands on the edge of the bed, on either side of her legs. So close to her, Wendy forgot to breathe.
There had been a strange shift in their relationship since the night he'd found her at the town line. Peter kept stealing kisses from her, small quick kisses that she barely had time to register before he'd moved away again. Neither of them were willing to discuss what it meant, and although Wendy didn't trust this new version of Peter Pan, she couldn't stop her heart from skipping a beat every time he touched her.
Wendy's eyes flickered down to his lips and Peter unable to resist, leant in to kiss her.
This time she grabbed his neck to stop him from moving away and fiercely kissed him back.
Peter moaned and pushed her over so that she was on her back and he was lead on top of her. As the kiss deepened, Peter started to feel hot. The sensation spread through his body until he felt like his body was burning.
There was a strange popping noise and the two of them jolted apart as an electric shock ran between their lips. Peter felt a shudder go through him as his body temperature dropped back to normal. The fire alarm shrieked above their heads making them jump.
Peter was about to complain when Wendy gasped.
'Peter look!' She pointed to where his laundry bin was, which was now on fire.
'Hmmm maybe you're on to something with this whole over thinking thing.' He grinned wildly.
'Put it out!' Wendy let out a small giggle. Peter tried to use magic to extinguish the flames but nothing happened. Mumbling insults under his breath he got up to put it out.
There was a loud tap at the door. Wendy went over to answer it.
'Oh it's you.' Regina said staring at the young girl with distaste. Wendy said nothing, just opened the door wider for Regina. Not waiting for a verbal invitation, the Queen strode into the apartment. She raised an eyebrow as she saw Peter snuff out the small fire.
'Having magic problems?' Regina asked sweetly. Peter folded his arms and frowned at her. Wendy shifted uncomfortably by the door, not certain on what she should do.
'No.' Peter spat. 'What do you want Regina?'
'I need your help.' Regina said. Peter laughed.
'My help?' He asked. 'And what makes you think I'm willing to help you?'
'Mother.' Regina muttered. Peter's laugh died instantly. 'She's coming, here.'
'She's dead.' Peter replied flatly, pointing his finger accusingly at her. 'You took care of that.'
Wendy frowned, looking back and forth between them trying to connect the dots. Regina shook her head.
'It appears she found a way around that.' Fed up of the unpleasant noise Regina waved her hand and the alarm stopped.
Peter sucked in a breath. 'She's alive?'
'And she's coming to Storybrooke unless we stop her.'
Wendy had never really put much thought into how she was able to find a portal from her world to another. If she tried to explain it, all she could say is that it was almost like they called out to her. When she first saw the white rabbit, her instincts pulled her to follow him down the rabbit hole and without thinking, she did.
Now here she was, stood in front of a mantelpiece where a gigantic mirror was hung above it in her neighbours front room. Her brothers stood behind her, confused as Wendy stared at her reflection. She had seen this mirror countless times and it had never looked any different before. Feeling the need to touch it, Wendy gingerly climbed onto the mantelpiece and not having much room to keep her balanced, as soon as her hand disappeared through the glass she fell into the mirror and disappeared through it.
Standing up, Wendy brushed the dust off her dress. Grinning she spun to face the mirror and waited for her brothers to join her. Michael came through first, clutching his teddy bear and squeezing his eyes shut as he fell through. John was a little more tactical, realising that one could climb through carefully and not fall to the floor like his siblings.
'Are we in Neverland?' Michael asked looking around him. They were stood in what looked like a darkened version of the room they were in just moments ago.
'No, we're somewhere else.' Wendy answered. She walked over to the bookcase and picked up a book. The title looked as though it was written in a strange language, but none that she recognised.
'John, what do you make of this?' Wendy asked opening the book and flickered through the pages. Her brother joined her and adjusted his glasses while he studied the text.
'Curious.' He muttered. Michael peered over in mild interest before walking over to a chess board. Getting an idea Wendy took the book from John and went back over to the mirror.
'Look.' She said raising the book to the mirror. Through the mirror, the words in the book were in English.
'It's a mirror image.' John exclaimed. 'How fascinating.'
While they fussed over the book, Michael tried the door which opened creakily. John and Wendy looked over at the sound and then walked over to their younger brother. The hallway was darker but other than that it appeared to be almost identical to the hallway in their neighbour's house. Feeling as though they needed to sneak through, the Darling children silently walked through the house and out the front door.
There was no street outside the house, only grass and trees. The boys looked around in awe while Wendy wandered over to one of the trees. Pinned to the bark by an arrow was a piece of parchment. Tearing it down Wendy sighed quietly as she looked at it.
There was a rustling in the bushes and before anyone could react, they were surrounded by guards, their spears backing the three of them together. John stood in front of his brother protectively.
'I know where we are.' Wendy declared. 'We're in Wonderland.'
'So let me get this straight, you found out that Mother is alive and instead of coming straight to me, you mess about with a sleeping curse, get yourself into even more trouble and now you want my help?' Peter said in what was an attempt at a calm voice but he was visually shaking and his voice betrayed him on the word Mother.
'Oh and no I've not been to this fire realm, but thanks for asking before putting Henry in danger and deciding to curse Charming!' Peter added.
'Gold already knew that you'd be no help in getting to that place.' Regina spat.
'You should have told me Regina.' Peter growled.
'I'm telling you now.' Regina said.
'Oh my God, you're brother and sister!' Wendy whispered, the revelation hitting her like a tonne of bricks.
Peter mumbled something under his breath. He scowled and ran a hand through his hair.
Moving over to the sofa Wendy sat down and watched the two of them. Now that she knew, she could believe they were related. They had that same kind of stubbornness. The way they both raised an eyebrow when they were unimpressed and that identical smug smirk they wore when they were pleased with themselves. Wendy was actually surprised at how similar they were when she really thought about it.
'Why should I help?' He asked. 'I don't care. Mother can do whatever she pleases.'
'For the same reason as Gold and myself.' Regina folded her arms and turned her head to look straight at Wendy. 'We all have our weaknesses out on display.'
Peter looked at Wendy and then back at Regina, a decision being mulled over in his head.
'Fine.' He huffed. Wendy's mouth dropped open.
'And as a sign of good faith.' Regina said pulling an old book out of her black handbag and presented it to Peter. He frowned a little as he took it from her.
'Mother's spell book.' He muttered. He stroked the cover of the book before flickering through the pages.
'A little magical boost to get you back on your feet.' There was a moment where they both smiled and it sent a chill down Wendy's spine.
'I'll be back soon.' Peter said to Wendy as he grabbed his jacket. She could only nod, still trying to process everything she'd heard in the last few minutes.
Mr Darling had always been rather fond of chess, and would often spend his Sundays challenging his eldest daughter to a contest.
Wendy had never been more grateful to her father for those long afternoons. Thinking carefully Wendy slowly moved her pawn. Cora smiled and fanned herself with a pink feathered fan.
They were in the royal gardens. Two servants were stood behind them holding huge umbrellas to shade them from the scorching sun. Wendy had been given a light blue dress to wear, simple but beautiful. Cora had complimented her when she'd been brought to her.
'I do love a game of chess.' Cora said studying the board. Wendy tried to covertly look over to the lawn where her brothers were playing a game of a croquet.
They seemed happy, completely unaware of the danger they were all in.
'Tell me child,' Cora said breaking Wendy out of her train of thought. 'How did you get here?'
Wendy chewed her bottom lip thoughtfully.
'I found a looking glass.' She said deciding to be honest. A servant came over with a tray. She watched as he placed two tea cups on the table. The Queen waved her hand in dismissal. The servant scurried away.
'Ah, a one way portal.' Cora said. She picked up her cup and saucer. Wendy watched as she took a sip.
'And how do you plan to get back?'
'I don't want to go back.' Wendy said, she chewed on her lip again.
'Then where do you wish to go?' Cora asked.
'Neverland.' Wendy said carefully.
'Oh?' Cora placed her cup and saucer back on the table. She picked up her black knight and captured Wendy's Rook. 'You wish to see him again?'
'No!' Wendy spat venomously. Cora's eyes widened.
'No?' She said. Wendy was staring back at the chess board.
Wendy didn't speak. Hesitantly she moved her queen to take Cora's knight.
'Ah, I see.' Cora said seeing the heartbroken expression Wendy tried to conceal. The Queen leant back in her chair and picked up her fan. She fanned herself and watched Wendy's brothers as they played.
'Neverland is no place for a young lady.' Cora commented. Wendy frowned.
'I'll be fine.' She said confidently. Cora looked at her and tilted her head.
'You've been there?' Cora asked, a small smile spread across her face. 'He took you to Neverland?'
'No,' Wendy whispered. She kept her eyes trained on the board, not daring to meet the Queen's eyes. 'I was brought there by mistake.'
'And yet you wish to return?' Cora moved a pawn.
Wendy didn't reply straight away, instead she focused on her next move.
'He took my friend.' She said eventually, moving a chess piece at the same time. 'I'm going to get him back.'
Cora smiled. They played the game in silence for a while. Wendy kept her eyes trained on the board, all too aware that her opponent was analysing her. After a few carefully placed moves, Cora broke the silence.
'There maybe a way we can help each other.'
Wendy moved another chess piece. Cora moved her queen to took Wendy's, putting her in check mate. She smiled victoriously and picked up Wendy's queen. Glancing at it and then at the young girl, her smile only widened.
'I know how you can defeat Peter Pan.' She said.
Wendy was curled up in a fleece throw on the sofa with a book when Peter returned. He looked a little dishevelled and completely shattered.
Walking towards her, he raised an eyebrow when he saw what she was reading.
Peter and Wendy.
Putting the book down with her finger neatly tucked in between the pages to save her place, she looked up at him expectedly. He stared at her for a few moments before dropping down on the sofa next to her. Wendy offered him the blanket and he pulled in across so it covered both of them.
'How did it go?' Wendy asked. Peter reached over and pulled her towards him so she was cuddled into his side. His arm snaked around her waist and he put his head on top of hers.
'She didn't get through.' He whispered.
'You sound disappointed.' Wendy said, she tried to glance up at him but his face was hidden in her hair. She heard him take a shaky breath.
'She's alive.'
'Who is she?' Wendy asked curiously. Peter took another deep breath kissed her hair and shuffled closer to her.
'She's no one you need to worry about.' He said. 'Mary Margaret and Emma made it through first and she was left behind. She can't get here.'
'Are they ok?' Wendy asked. She put the book on the sofa next to her and turned to face him properly. He was avoiding her gaze.
'They're fine, off celebrating their great return.' Peter rolled his eyes. Wendy didn't miss the tone of his voice.
'You're not happy they're back?' She asked.
'Don't care.' Peter muttered. He still wasn't looking at her. Putting her head on his shoulder she reached for his hand, gently lacing her fingers with his. She rubbed his thumb with hers.
After a while she could feel him drifting off to sleep.
Her phone buzzed on the coffee table. Wendy watched as it vibrated across the wooden surface. Moving slowly to not wake him, she reached for her phone. Peter groaned and Wendy froze. After waiting a moment for him to settle, she picked up the phone.
It was a picture of a drawing. The shapes looked familiar and it took her a few seconds to realise what it was. Biting her lip, Wendy moved off the sofa. Peter slouched down but stayed sleeping. Quietly Wendy snuck over to the bathroom and held her phone up to the mirror above the sink.
Meet at Granny's.
When she left the bathroom, Peter was snoring lightly. He was still sleeping more than usual, she'd most likely have a few hours before he woke up again. Quietly as she could Wendy grabbed her bag and climbed out the window.
Wendy felt a strange surge of excitement as she wandered down the pavement. It had been a long time since she'd been free to wander where she pleased.
Stopping at the crossroad near the bell tower she closed her eyes. She took a deep breath as the wind gently hit her face. Opening her eyes she thought she saw something move at the corner of the street to her left.
Curiosity made her take that path and follow it down towards the school. Following her instincts Wendy walked slowly, taking her time.
'I've always said it's remarkable how one so young can wander and yet never be lost.' Jefferson's voice called out. Wendy smiled and saw he leaning against a birch tree.
'I'm pretty sure I have gotten lost on many occasions.' Wendy said nodding her head to greet him. Jefferson looked around her.
'You're alone?' He asked.
'Yes.' Wendy said quietly. Jefferson gestured for her to walk and the two of them set off in the direction of Granny's.
'It was a risk to text me.' Wendy pointed out, keeping her eyes on the path ahead. 'He could have seen it.'
'It was a risk I was willing to take.' Jefferson replied.
Wendy kicked a stone and watched it bounce into the road.
'What was like?' She asked quietly. Jefferson frowned.
'What?' He asked.
'Being cursed but remembering who you were.' Wendy said. It was plaguing her, how different Peter was treating her.
'It was maddening.' Jefferson replied. 'And terribly lonely.'
Wendy looked up at him.
'Lonely?' She asked. Wendy had never thought of it like that.
'Imagine everyone you know being stripped away, but they're there in front of you every day only they don't remember who they are or who you are.' Jefferson said.
'Oh.' Wendy said.
'There is a reason we drank a lot.' He laughed solemnly. Wendy could feel tears prickling at the corner of her eyes.
'He was all alone.' Wendy whispered. It made sense to her now. That was what had changed.
They stopped walking. Across the street was Granny's, it was lit up and there looked as though a party going on inside. Wendy frowned.
'Why did you want to meet with me?' She asked watching as Henry walked past the window.
'Grace is in there.' Jefferson stated. 'I'm going to get her and then we're leaving.'
Wendy's frown deepened. She looked at him curiously.
'But how?'
'I have my ways.' Jefferson said, a small smile twitching across his face. 'I want you to come with us.'
For the second time that day Wendy was speechless.
'There is a storm coming Wendy and it won't end well.' Jefferson told her.
'You're talking about Regina's mother?' Wendy said. 'Peter said she couldn't get through.'
Jefferson sighed.
'Where there is a will, there is a way.' Jefferson said. Wendy frowned again. Jefferson watched her for a moment.
'Do you know who Regina's mother is?' Jefferson asked. Wendy shook her head. Jefferson considered for a moment whether to tell her. Deciding it would most likely swing her decision Jefferson told her.
'Cora.'
Wendy gasped. Her eyes widened and her face drained of colour. Jefferson put a hand on her shoulder.
'You understand why we must leave?' He said. Wendy squeezed her eyes shut.
'Cora is,' she couldn't say it out loud. Jefferson nodded his head.
'Yes, Cora is coming here. Its only a matter of time.' He said thinking that was the main reason she'd frozen on the spot.
'Will you come with us?' Jefferson asked. Wendy tore her eyes away from the window of Granny's to look at him, her shock still written all over her face.
'Will you come with us and leave Storybrooke?'
Author's Notes
I'm so sorry for the massive gaps between updating this fic. Life just keeps getting in the way. Thank you to everyone who is still reading this and thank you so much to everyone who has reviewed, it helps spur me on to keep writing. I hope you like this chapter, and I hope Peter's not behaving too OOC, there is logic for why he's behaving like this (plus he's like super sleepy all the time so I think that also affects his mood).
