A/N: It's been a while. This story is quickly coming to a close. Thank you all of my faithful readers, for staying with this story without an update for months. I have no excuse, except I had no muse.
Disclaimer: I don't own M*A*S*H, just Hana.
Hana cringed as Hawkeye placed a cool cloth on her check, "Believe me, Hawkeye, I don't need this," she cast her eyes downward, "It'll bruise anyway," she added.
"Not if I have anything to do with it," Hawkeye said determinedly. Truthfully, he didn't want his beautiful woman to have any impurities. "I won't let you bruise."
"Hawkeye, makeup has a way of working you know," she told him.
Hawkeye didn't respond but began swabbing her face; Hana pushed his hand away, "Hawkeye, I don't want it!" Hawkeye was taken back. He had never seen her that angry. Her eyes blazed and her mouth formed a straight line, her eyes held a piercing glare. He then watched all emotion flow from her face and be replaced by sorrow and guilt.
"Hana," her face was soon tipped up with his finger, "I'm sorry, but I want you to be ok."
Her face turned downward once again. Hawkeye turned and barely caught on to what she said, "What?"
"You're hurt too," her eyes met his and he saw a few tears forming. Hana quickly closed her eyes and any trace of tears disappeared from her face.
Hawkeye sat next to her and placed her hand in his, "Hana, I told you once I would step on a mine for you. Trust me I would know; a punch that barely grazed my face is nothing to what I promised you. Add everything in between and that's a lot of hurting just for you. Believe me; I would do everything twice if it meant I could see you once."
Hana let out something that sounded like a laugh, "I told you I wouldn't like it, and I'm telling you the same thing now." Her eyes went to his face and they stopped on a certain spot. She gently lifted her finger and rubbed it against the spot that she saw. Her finger had s speck of dried blood on it. "You're bleeding," she whispered.
Hawkeye slid down and continued bandaging her cheek.
The next morning Hana woke up and attempted to cover the bruising spot of skin with her makeup. Satisfied with the small spot of purple; she bundled up and went out to the mess tent. Hana found an empty table and sat down to begin her eating. She didn't want to be anti-social, but it just happened that way. When the thud of another tray was in front of her she glared up at her intruder. The cheesy grin that met her didn't waver her glare.
"Something wrong, Hana?" BJ asked as he sat down.
"Yeah," she answered and shoved a forkful of something in her mouth.
"Oh, what would that be?" BJ asked.
Hana didn't answer but picked up her tray and placed it in the waiting bin outside. She soon saw Major Houlihan coming out, "Major!"
The major turned sharply, "Yes what is it Lieutenant?"
"I was wondering if you had any extra hospital duty you need done?"
"Yes, as a matter of fact I do. Go to post-op and relieve the nurse on duty, I don't care how long you work." The Major said before turning on her heel and leaving.
Hana quickly went to the hospital and saw Baker sitting at the desk, "Baker, Major Houlihan wanted me to take over for you."
"You're not on duty," Baker brushed her red bangs from her eyes.
"I needed something to do," Hana said. Backer shrugged and handed over Hana the lab coat and clip board. Hana slowly made her rounds and took her seat at the desk.
"Nurse," Hana flicked her head and saw a patient with a bandage over his eyes looking towards her.
Hana sat on the stool by his bedside, "What it is?"
"Nothing, I just needed someone to talk to," the soldier told her.
Hana lightly smiled and wrote something down on the clipboard she had grabbed, "Alright, what is it you want to know?"
The soldier considered his question thoroughly before speaking, "Why do you have a bruise?"
Hana frowned and realized the bruise on her cheek was more noticeable than she thought, "No reason, a few slippery places outside."
"Hmm, never knew that could give someone a bruise."
"Alright, since you don't seem to believe me, why don't you tell me how I became bruised?" she smirked at his blank face. Hana chuckled and returned to her place.
At noon, Hana was relieved by Kelley. Hana slipped outside. The cold wind sliced threw her coat and she pulled it tighter to her. Hurriedly searching for a warm place Hana found herself in the officer's club. The warmth the flooded her caused her to sigh contentedly. "Hello, Lieutenant," Igor greeted her.
Hana smiled back at him, "Hello, Igor."
"Anything I can get you Lieutenant?" he asked.
"No thank you," Hana shook her head. Looking around she slipped into the table nearest the heater. The warmth that was on her caused Hana again to release a contented sigh. She would be leaving soon. Almost too soon, Hana thought.
The next few days everyone was in a Christmas spirit, casualties came in, but not even the wounded could ruin the festive time of year that surrounded the upcoming holiday.
BJ Hunnicut sat at the table in Post-op. He turned his head and spotted Lieutenant Tatakai sitting with one of the patients, her brown hair lay loose across her shoulders. Her warm laugh filled the room for a moment before it died down, leaving BJ filled with sadness. She would be gone in a few days, and he knew that Hawkeye would be devastated.
"Hana," the nurse flicker her head toward BJ, she nodded and left her patient.
"What is it, BJ?" her hands buried in her pockets.
"How's Carter been doing?"
"Not so hot, he's still running that fever, and it just won't go away, Captain." BJ nodded.
"Nurseā¦" a moan from the patient carter caught their attention. Hana walked calmly yet quickly to his bedside.
"What is it, Carter?" BJ stood at the foot of the bed.
"My stomach, the pain's bad, ma'am."
"Alright, I'll get you something for it," she began to stand up but he grabbed her hand.
"No, stay here," he gasped out.
Hana smiled and sat down on the bed, "I'm not going anywhere." She cast a look at BJ and seemed to say this wasn't going to end well.
"Why can't I see you anymore? Everything's white," he asked.
"Shh, don't fight it, your body's healing, Carter. And when it's done you won't feel this pain anymore."
BJ turned his head and saw Hawkeye barge into the room. "It still hurts," Carter groaned.
"I know, I know it hurts. Focus on something else for now," Carter relaxed but his breathing was still heard.
"Good boy, Carter," Hana's hand moved up and felt his pulse as it weakened. She sighed as it ended. "Corpsman," she moved away from the bed and walked down the aisle and stopped at the last bed where Hawkeye stood, she cast him a brief smile before turning to get the medicine for other patients.
Hawkeye was shocked; shocked that she could smile so soon after that boy's death. This was just one more thing that he wanted to understand about Hana. But she was leaving the next day.
Hawkeye threw open the door to the Swamp and saw a certain nurse sitting on his bunk, "Hi Hawkeye," she was in his arms in a second.
"You're leaving tomorrow," was all he could manage to say.
"I don't want to think about that now," she looked up and kissed him. One filled with sadness, and yet the love they shared for each other.
"Hana," he broke away and looked into her eyes, "Why do you have to leave? I don't think I could function without you." She suddenly pulled away from his embrace.
"You make it sound like as soon as I'm gone, our relationship is over. Is that all you think of us? That this is just a fling only to be carried on while we're in the same camp?"
"No, Hana of course not, long distance relationships have a way of working out as well." He smiled and gave her a reassuring kiss.
"Fine," she melted into his embrace and the night was made for two lovers, soon to be parted.
