AN: A short but emotional chapter! A warning, HP character deaths in this chapter….
AN: Thanks everybody for the reviews, keep them coming!
AN: Sir W, I'm trying to keep the used words suitable for Tolkien's story but Ginny is a bit more modern and I have to keep it true to her character. Besides she spend many years with Lavender Brown… she picked up a few things…;)
37. The Twins.
It was with sunrise that she was awoken by Legolas.
"Ginny." He shook her awake.
"Hmmm…" She murmured as she heard a voice far away.
"Wake up, Ginny. There are two guests who want to meet you."
This woke her up a little.
"Guests?"
"Yes, Lord Elrond's sons have arrived with a small group of elves to aid us."
She sat up and still felt exhausted.
"I'm so tired." She groaned.
"You slept solidly through the night. I checked up on you shortly after dinner but Mathilda told me that you were sleeping. I made sure you were still breathing before leaving. I know Aragorn checked on you shortly before sunrise but you were still deep asleep." Legolas told her.
"I probably need some food. I missed dinner." Ginny sighed.
"Why don't you get cleaned up and dressed. I'll wait for you outside and take you to meet the twins. They are having breakfast with Aragorn as well."
"Twins?" Ginny asked and her head perked up. It was only for a second before the pain slashed through her. Twins…how she missed them.
"Yes, Elladan and Elrohir are the eldest children of Lord Elrond. They have come to aid us in our battle. Lord Elrond must have mentioned you as they asked for a meeting with you specifically."
Ginny nodded weakly and got up. She was still dressed in the clothes she had worn the day before. Deep in her sorrow she browsed through her clothes until she found something that she felt comfortable with. Tunic and breeches. She barely noticed Legolas moving to the balcony as she changed her clothes and washed her face.
She looked at a crude mirror and took a second to fix her hair.
"I'm done." She said as she waited for Legolas to appear again. He was there quickly and only now she noticed the worried look on his face.
"Are you alright?" He asked.
"No, I'm not." Ginny admitted. Being confronted with something this painful wasn't good for her right now. She was too tired to really be able to control her emotions. She had no energy for the fight against herself. And this was a hard fight.
Of all her brothers she had been closest to her twin brothers. Where Bill had been the protective big brother, Charlie the brother who took her flying, the twins had been the ones who gave her confidence and strength. They made sure she was able to stand up for herself and be proud of it.
The twins had been special and important in her life.
"I miss my own twin brothers so much. I miss their laughter, their jokes and their banter. They died a horrible way, I was there I saw it." She whispered as tears escaped.
*Memory*
"Ginny! Watch out!" Fred yelled and she ducked just in time to avoid a particularly nasty looking curse. She spun around and shot back a curse with the same aggression. Fred took her hand and they ran for the cover of the trees.
"We have to get back to the castle." Ginny breathed.
"Yes, I'll take your back, you curse the front." Fred nodded and immediately formed a plan. Ginny nodded and took a deep breath. Her wand and magic were ready. With a single nod they ran out from their cover. She shot blasting curse after blasting curse at anything that moved in black cloaks.
They made it inside in seconds. George was already waiting for them and closed the door behind them.
"Expulso!" She heard behind her. It sounded like Bellatrix.
"Dive!" She screamed and jumped from the door. She hid in a small alcove as the door was blasted from its hinges. However that wasn't the only damage to the castle. The curse had been of such strength that it took down half the wall.
"Fred!" She heard George scream seconds later. She looked up and threw up. Fred hadn't been able to move away quickly enough. His broken body was now lying under the rubble. His eyes barely opened.
"Fred!" She yelled. She shot a fire curse at the incoming Death Eaters before running towards her brothers.
"Fred." She breathed as she slid down next to him.
"I'm sorry, little sister." Fred whispered.
"Don't." George whimpered. "Don't leave me."
"I can't help it… I'm sorry George." Fred breathed.
"No. Please fight." George cried. Ginny took hold of her brother's hand as she looked for a way to save him. Blood was flowing from his stomach. The floor was already turning red.
"Fred, please." Ginny whimpered.
"Stay strong, fight for me. Live for me." Fred breathed. He took a labored breath. "I can't fight anymore."
"No, Fred, no." George cried. Ginny couldn't stop her tears as she watched the life-light leaving one of her twin brothers.
"Keep our dream alive." Fred breathed. "Love you."
"NO!" George screamed. Ginny sobbed and sobbed and sobbed.
Losing one brother had been bad but the way she lost George was even worse.
*Memory*
Completely overtaken by grief and pain George stood up and Ginny noticed the dangerous glint in his eyes.
"Please George, don't…" She started but her brother didn't hear or see anything. His eyes were locked on something outside. Ginny followed him as he stalked off. He was heading for the area where Bellatrix was fighting Tonks.
Ginny couldn't help but fear for her brother as he threw curse after curse at the mad-woman. The woman crackled loudly and turned her attention in George. What followed was a duel out of nightmares. George was a very good fighter but Bellatrix was a Black and dueling was a part of her childhood training. George never really stood a chance.
Ginny tried to help him but another Death Eater crossed her path and she was engaged in a fierce duel herself. Halfway through somebody joined her and they managed to subdue their enemy.
It was only after that, that she had a chance to see if George was still standing.
She let out a scream as she saw that duel had ended and George was laying face down on the floor. She rushed over and dodged a few curses before she could cast a shield and reach George.
"No." She breathed. She turned George around and got violently sick again. "No."
Her brother was covered in bruises and cuts. Bellatrix had clearly taken the time to torture him. It appeared that every bone in his body was broken and there wasn't an inch of skin without a cut.
She checked for a pulse but it wasn't there.
"No, George. Please no." She cried. "Don't leave me… don't…"
Witnessing her brother's die would haunt her forever. The brutal and gruesome way they died hurt so much. They had died too young but they had not deserved the pain that came with their death.
Legolas wrapped his arm around her and brushed his free hand through her hair in an attempt to soothe her a little. It worked; his touch was like magic to her frayed nerves and haywire emotions. She leaned into his touch and let him take away the pain.
"I'll be by your side to support you but you don't need to go and meet them." Legolas said kindly. Ginny knew that he would tell them that she couldn't meet with them but that sounded wrong as well. She remembered Lord Elrond say that she would meet his sons and it sounded like he meant it was a good meeting. Besides it was not their fault that they were twins.
"No, it will be fine. Lord Elrond told me I would meet them before the end battle. I better get it over with. I just hope they aren't twins like my brothers were."
"It will be okay." Legolas said and pulled her close again. She used his closeness to settle and lock up her emotions. After a few minutes they left the room together and made their way to the dinning hall. She held Legolas's arm as a support pillar.
As soon as she saw the twins she shivered in pain. They were sitting with Aragorn and were laughing about something that had recently happened. The mischief and fun in the eyes of the twins as they looked at Aragorn was what made her turn away from them and bury her face in Legolas's chest.
"I can't do this." She muttered. His arms wrapped immediately around her.
However their presence had been noticed by the three men and Aragorn was already up and walking towards them. Ginny felt Legolas doing his best to shield her from the pain but he couldn't. Some memories were still too fresh.
"Ginny, are you alright?" Aragorn asked. She just shook her head.
"Very bad memories." Legolas whispered for her.
Ginny felt Aragorn's hand on her shoulder and she accepted the comfort it brought. She let go of Legolas and turned into Aragorn's embrace.
"I'm sorry…" She muttered. "Being silly."
"No, not silly. However Lord Elrond's sons came here to help us. They have heard a lot about you already from their father. They would like to meet you." Aragorn told her softly.
"It's just the twin-thing… my brothers, they were twins. I was there when they died. It hurts."
"I know, little one. I know." He said with a strong hug. "Come, be brave. I'm sure that it will help you."
She looked up at Legolas and saw his worry for her. She was sure that if he could Legolas would take all her pain away. Sadly he could do nothing then offer comfort and support. Her eyes lowered a little and fell on the necklace she had given him. The Gryffindor lion.
Gryffindor, where the brave at heart dwell.
She turned back to Aragorn and smiled softly at him. She knew it wouldn't reach her eyes but Aragorn held out his hand and she took it. He led her to the table where the twins were waiting patiently. As Ginny took a good look at them she saw things that made them different from her twins.
Both elves had long black hair that was braided to the back. Their brown eyes held a wisdom that only came with great age. Now she had a good look she realized that they looked very similar to the woman she had seen in the vision she had when she held the pendant. They were indeed the brothers of Arwen.
With Elrohir and Elladan not laughing and joking it was much easier for her to see past the twin thing.
"Elrohir, Elladan, this is Ginevra, the red Istar." Aragorn said. Ginny winched as both men smirked.
"We have heard about you." One of them said and got up. "Word has already reached us about your curses. Something about pink hair, hives or beards."
They reached Ginny and held out their hand. The taller of the two spoke first.
"I'm Elladan."
"and I'm Elrohir."
They didn't seem to have the real twin-speak like her brothers had. Nor did they have the charisma her brothers had. They were just a completely different enigma.
"I'm Ginny. It's a pleasure to meet you two. I'm sorry it's not under better circumstances."
"We don't choose our timing. We just have to go with what is given to us." Elrohir said seriously.
"Besides we were forewarned that our arrival might not be welcomed by you." Elladan added. Ginny felt bad immediately. It wasn't their fault that her emotions were still so scattered.
"No, it's not by your doing." Ginny told them. "It's just that I had twin-brothers. I lost them recently in a terrible battle and miss them terribly. You two just reminded me of them and it was just too much."
"I'm sorry for your loss, lady Ginevra." Elladan said.
"Thanks. It is a pleasure to meet you both though." Ginny said as she shook both their hands.
"Come join us for breakfast." Aragorn said. "You missed dinner last night and this is your last chance to sit down and eat. This afternoon we will set out for the black gate."
"Why so soon?" Ginny asked.
"Because of bad news the twins bring. The darkness is spreading quicker then we thought. The armies of Sauron that are based in Dol Guldur attacked Lothlorien. By the power of Lady Galadriel and the extreme might of her marchwarden's men they have managed to gain victory but it's only temporary. The ring must be destroyed quickly. We need to make sure Frodo can move quickly."
"Lothlorien? That's where Haldir is from, right?"
"Yes." Legolas nodded.
"Is he alright? Do you know?"
"So far they didn't receive any casualties only injured men. However we don't know how long they will manage to keep back the forces of Dol Guldur." Elrohir answered.
Ginny nodded and took a sip of her tea. She took a second to think and eat. They would ride out today and in a few days they would face an army too massive and too strong for them. Still they would fight bravely in the hope that a small Hobbit would be their salvation.
"I have the blue-bell flames ready. My potions will need to be bottled but I can have that done before midday. How many men have showed up?"
"The twins brought a small group of skilled warriors. Two legions from other parts of Gondor have arrived." Aragorn said. "I hope more will arrive over the course of the morning."
"Do you have scouts out already?" Ginny asked.
"A few but we haven't heard back from them yet."
"I have a bad feeling about this, Aragorn." Ginny sighed. She had been having this weird feeling since Aragorn challenged Sauron. Like there was something they were missing. She wasn't sure on what they were based but for now she called it intuition.
"My scouts will return before midday. We will discus this after they have returned, alright?" Aragorn asked her.
"That will be fine. If the scouts do not return I'm going to scout it out myself. With apparating and my broom I'll be safe and fast." Ginny said. She noticed that neither Aragorn or Legolas seemed particularly happy with this idea but they couldn't find any reasons to protest. It was just that her feelings about missing some vital information were increasing with the minute. A deep fear settled in her stomach as she realized that she didn't expect the scouts to return.
The two new elves were very interested in Ginny's work and accompanied her that morning. To her surprise being around them wasn't as hard as she had expected. The elven twins weren't like her twin brothers. They used to have a mischievous streak but they lost that long ago. These days their lives were filled with orc hunting and keeping Rivendell safe. They took that job very seriously. They were very kind, helpful and curious. They asked her many questions about her potions, magic and life.
Ginny noticed that they would mainly ask her about her life in Middle Earth so far. She was happy talking about that. While it hadn't been easy so far she was actually starting to enjoy her new life in Middle Earth. Talking to the two elves about it made her realize how much she enjoyed being in Middle Earth.
