alright, if you have read the books than this will be very familiar. it's not my best chapter because it's mainly Melissa's comments while Bella and Jacob are talking in Bella's bedroom.
thank you to , Beverly Marie, and Purplette237!
Chapter 33
Bella was freaking out! Jacob kept trying to open the window without much success. I just stood and watched Jacob struggle. It was only when Bella stumbled out of her bed that I decided to actually do something.
"Relax Bella." I whispered.
Bella turned to me with a horrified face. "Victoria," she whispered.
My eyes widened. She thought- I- wait- oooooohh!
"Bella!" Jacob hissed after cutting himself on a branch. "Ouch! Dang it, open the window! OUCH!"
The horror left Bella's face. She moved to open the window. I stopped her.
Slowly, I opened the window.
Jacob recognized me instantly. "Melissa? What are you doing here?"
Bella was confused. "Jake, what are you doing here?"
I could see she was still shocked to see him. Heak! I would be too if someone was dangling from a tree outside my window.
"I'm trying to keep"- he huffed, trying to balance on the tree-"my promise!"
"Well, I'm comforting Bella after someone hurt her," my voice dropped to a dark, deadly tone, "again."
Jacob looked like he'd been stabbed as I reminded him he already broke his promise.
"When did you ever promise to kill yourself falling out of Charlie's tree?"
Bella wasn't worried about the fact Jacob had literally left her, in the rain might I add. Oh no! She was worried about the fact he was dangling from a tree about twenty feet off the ground. Typical.
My voice was still in its dark tone. "Don't worry, Bella, he wouldn't die. He's just break most of his bones and then they'd have to be rebroken when they heal the wrong way. Hopefully his neck would break."
Bella gasped at my violent words. Heh, heh, right! She um didn't experience this side of me a whole lot.
"Get out of the way," Jacob ordered me. I crossed my arms.
"But I like seeing you struggle so much."
Bella tried pushing me out of the way. I sighed and moved. But that didn't decrease the hating glace I was throwing at Jacob.
Why was he even here?
We watched as Jacob started swinging back and forth. Bella realized what he was doing.
"No, Jake!"
Too late.
He swung in and landed on his feet. I thought that was a cat thing.
Jacob grinned slowly.
Bella seemed hurt. I clenched my fist.
"Get out!" Bella hissed.
I stepped forward. "You heard her."
His face went blank with surprise.
"No," he protested. "I came to apologize."
"I don't accept!"
Bella tried to shove him out the window. She didn't budge him an inch.
"Let me take care of it."
I stalked forward to push him out the window.
"Wait!" Jacob put his hands up.
Bella suddenly swayed. We both rushed to help her.
"Bella?" Jacob whispered anxiously.
I moved her to her bed, where she fell instantly.
"Hey, are you okay?" Jacob asked. I could see worry etching itself in his forehead.
"What do you think?" I asked sarcastically.
Bella started crying again. "Why in the world would I be okay, Jacob?"
That hit him hard.
"Right." He looked down.
"Crap. Well . . . I-I'm so sorry, Bella."
That was it? That was all he could say? Oh uh-uh!
Bella's voice came out cold and hard. "Why did you come here? I don't want apologies from you, Jake."
I crossed my arms to show I was with her.
"I know," he whispered. "But I couldn't leave things the way I did this afternoon. That was horrible. I'm sorry."
"You didn't even see the after effect," I whispered lowly.
"I don't understand anything." Bella shook her head.
"I know I want to explain-" he broke off suddenly, his mouth open, like something had cut off his air supply.
My eyes widened. No way! He was trying to tell her! My former feelings towards him changed.
Finally he took a deep breath. "But I can't explain," he said. "I wish I could."
SAM!
I am going to kill him! I will! Him and his stupid alpha demands!
Bella didn't understand, so she was still angry. "Why?"
Jacob was trying so hard to disobey the command, but Sam's words were crushing him.
"What's wrong?" Bella asked after seeing Jacob was cringing.
"I can't do it," he muttered.
I whispered to low for Bella. "I can."
Jacob snapped up to me.
"Do what?" Bella was pushing him on.
Jacob suddenly perked up.
"Look, Bella, haven't you ever had a secret you couldn't tell anyone?"
What good was this doing?
"Something you felt like you had to keep from Charlie, from you mom . . .?"
Bella tightened her eyes. That was a yes.
"Can you understand that I might have the same kind of . . . situation?"
The command was making him struggle, but he was doing great with word choice. I don't really see where he's going though.
"Sometimes, loyalty gets in the way of what you want to do. Sometime, it's not your secret to tell."
I intensely watched Jacob and Bella. I was wondering if I should step in or not.
"I don't know why you came here, Jacob, if you were just going to give me riddles instead of answers."
Yup, I should step in.
"Bella-"
"The part that kills me," Jacob interrupted, "is that you already know. I already told you everything!"
"Wait-what?" I was confused. When did he tell her about the wolves?
"What are you talking about?" Bella asked in frustration.
Jacob looked at me and gave me a look that seemed to say "I got this".
"I think I see a way to make this work out-because you know this, Bella! I can't tell you, but if you guessed it! That would let me right off the hook!"
No way! Jacob was a brilliant genius. Although, I could still just tell her, but this might work out so much better. If she figured it out without me having to explode into a wolf in front of her she might not suffer from the shock too much.
"You want me to guess? Guess what!"
"My secret! You can do it- you know the answer!"
Hmm . . . maybe if he tried giving her a few-
"Hold on, let me see if I can give you some help."
Never mind!
"Help?" Bella was so tired, I'm surprised she is still awake!
"Yeah," Jacob was trying to get around Sam's command. "Like clues."
There we go!
Jacob took Bella's hands and looked into her eyes.
"Remember the day we met- on the beach in La Push?"
Oh! That was when he told her the legends!
"Of course I do."
"Tell me about it."
Bella took a deep breath and tried to concentrate.
"We went for a walk down the beach . . ." Bella's cheeks flushed.
What had happened on this little walk?
Jacob nodded anxiously.
"You told me some scary stories . . . Quileute legends."
Jacob closed his eyes and reopened them. "Yes."
Eee! He was barely making it around the order!
"Do you remember what I said?"
Remember! Please Bella!
"Think hard!" Jacob begged.
"Yes, I remember."
I perked up. Did she know?
"Do you remember all the stor-"
Jacob looked like he was about to throw up. Too close!
"Stories?" Bella guessed.
Jacob nodded.
"You know this! You know this!" Jacob muttered.
"Maybe I should step in." I suggested lowly. "You told her the 'descendants from wolves' right?"
Jacob looked at me and nodded.
I turned to Bella.
"Bella, does this ring a bell? Descendants from wolves."
Bella's eyebrows furrowed together.
That was a no. perfect! And I thought I had this!
"Jake? Jake, please, I'm exhausted. I'm no good at this right now. Maybe in the morning . . ."
"Maybe it will come back to you." Jacob sighed.
"Do you mind if I ask you a question."
Bella was hooked. "A question about what?
I wanted to know this question too.
"About the vampire story I told you."
WHAT! That was how she found out about the Cullen's? Well, that would explain a whole lot. like how one day she knows nothing, and the next she just simply tells Edward she knows. that had always been a mystery to me.
"Did you honestly not know? Was I the one who told you what he was?"
Well, Bella picked up on that quickly. Her emotions displayed it all.
Jacob hung his head.
Bella sighed and thought for a minute.
"Isn't there a way for you to get free?" Bella asked. "From all this crap."
Jacob shook a little. Don't lose it Jake.
"No, I'm in for life. A life sentence." He laughed bitterly. "Longer, maybe."
Well, that was true.
Bella sighed.
"Look, I have to leave." Jacob sighed as well.
"Why?" Bella asked.
Jacob chuckled lightly. "For one thing, you look like you're going to pass out at any second. You need you sleep-I need you firing on all pistons." He became serious. "You're going to figure this out, you have to."
Bella noticed he only said one reason. "And why else?"
Jacob and I frowned. "I had to sneak out-I'm not supposed to see you. They've go to be wondering where I am. I suppose I should go let them know."
Bella balled her fists and hissed, "You don't have to tell them anything."
"All the same I will."
"I hate them." Bella and I said at the same time.
Bella looked at me. She became confused as she remembered I was here too.
Jacob caught her attention back. "No, Bella. Don't hate the guys. It's not Sam's or any of the other's faults. I told you before-it's me. Sam is actually . . . well, incredibly cool."
I coughed. "Um, Jacob, you are umm, far beyond wrong."
Jacob glared at me. Wonderful! He is still a Sam follower. well, I guess I can't have any of the other wolves on my side.
Jacob looked back at Bella. Her face was telling us she couldn't believe Jacob just said that. I can't either.
"Then why aren't you supposed to see me?" Bella demanded.
Well, let's see! Sam is a control freak who thinks no wolf should be around humans. And yet I still see him kissing Emily EVERY TIME I ENTER HIS HEAD!
"It's not safe."
You could see the fear creep into Bella. why would she be afraid?
"If I thought it was too . . . risky," he whispered, "I wouldn't have come. But bella, I made you a promise. I had no idea it would be so hard to keep, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try."
Jacob looked to the window.
"I'm going to do what I can to be here for you, just like I promised. It would really help if you can figure this out on your own, Bella. Put some honest effort into it."
Bella grimaced. "I'll try."
"And I'll try to see you soon. But could you just do one thing for me? At least call me-if you don't want to see me again. Let me know if it's like that."
"That won't happen-"
Jacob cut her off. "Just let me know."
He stood up and headed to the window.
Bella protested, "Don't be an idiot, Jake. You'll break your leg. Use the door. Charlie's not going to catch you."
"I won't get hurt," he muttered.
Jacob turned and pulled Bella into a hug.
"Just in case," he whispered.
"Can't-breath!" Bella gasped.
Jacob dropped her and smiled. "Get some sleep bells. You've got to get your head working. I know you can do this. I need you to understand. I won't lose you. Not for this."
Jacob turned to the door and strode quickly to it. I followed quickly, while Bella fell on her bed.
Outside, Jacob turned to me.
"Melissa, if-if this doesn't work, will you please tell her?" Jacob asked.
I rolled my eyes. "Oh Jacob, my dear cousin! I was already planning on it, but then you came in and had this brilliant idea! Thanks a lot!"
We chuckled.
"I'm sorry for causing all of this for you. But thank you for keeping her safe." Jacob rubbed his neck.
I smirked. "Just know that you are in my debt."
Jacob sighed. "That's wonderful."
"Oh, and for when you think about this conversation with the pack, we win. Bella will find out about the secret one way or another."
Jacob smacked his head. "Don't think like that, Melissa. Sam is really trying to protect people."
I shrugged. "Whatever. You have your opinion and I have mine." I was having my own victory dance in my head.
Jacob grinned. "Have a great night."
"Yeah, you too. Can't wait to see how Sam reacts. Oh and tell Embry I said hi!" I eyed Jacob down. He better not forget this part of the conversation.
Jacob ran off into the woods in front of us. I sighed and went inside.
Bella was already asleep. And sleep was where I needed to go. Right after a quick midnight snack. I made my way to the kitchen.
