Hey guys! Can I just say I abhor the dentist? I just finished chapter 37 and it ends on a fairly mean cliff hanger and the dentist is probably why. Anyways…
Bramblewhisker88- Thanks! I loved writing them, as awful as that sounds. And I'm a huge BramblexSquirrel fan too, which is why its sucked when we had to kill him, it's also why I killed her. I figured they could reunite in StarClan and such. I'm glad the Clouds could provide some comic relief and that you liked Hail=) I'm not going to kill him by the way, I like him too much! Hope you enjoy this!
Also I'm a bit worried that the cat's descriptions of the Dark Forest cats might be a bit confusing, so this is a list of the Dark Forest cats and the description I use:
Tigerstar: Large dark tabby with yellow eyes
Hawkfrost: Large dark tabby with ice blue eyes
Brokenstar: Scarred brown (tabby) tom
Mapleshade: Matted tortishell she-cat with amber eyes
Lillywinter: Cream cat with green eyes
Thistleclaw: spikey furred gray tom
Wolfstream: Large gray she-cat with dark eyes
Shadowheart: Large black tom with golden eyes
Blossomfall: Tortishell and white she-cat with cracked insane eyes
Darkrise: Dark red tom
Boneclaw: Black tom with white stripes
Breezepelt: Black-pelted tom, lean
Chapter Thirty Six
*Mosslight*
With the battle all around me, it's all I can do to stay close to my sister. Spottedsky and I fight together often, but sometimes we're split up and have to run through the chaos to find each other again. My heart cramps every time I think about all of my friends. I catch glimpses of familiar pelts in the fray, but little more than that.
Spottedsky comes to my aid as we fight a large black cat, golden eyes glittering. It appeared not long ago, screaming its head off before attacking a warrior that was already fighting three Dark Forest cats. We did our best to distract it, and now it's doing its best to kill us.
While Spottedsky grapples I dodge down and bite hard on its leg, clawing the other. I batter it even as it falls and Spottedsky starts to shred. It screams, lunging up and throwing us off, before disappearing.
"Did we kill it?" I ask in pants, although I can guess.
"I don't think so." Spottedsky replies, her chest heaving as she fights to regain control of her breathing, "I think we just made him angry."
"It," I mutter, "It's an it."
"Fine, it." Spottedsky replies, rolling her eyes at me while I look around the moor where we're fighting. Mistystar fights three at once near us and I sigh, struggling up to my paws. A few paces away my old mentor Foxleap and his mate Hollyleaf battle two Dark warriors.
"What now?" Spottedsky asks standing and testing her weight on an injured leg.
"Mistystar." I reply and Spottedsky nods. We rush up to her and engage two of the cats that are attacking her. Mistystar blinks in surprise, but takes it in her stride, moving a little away from us to have room as she fights.
After several moments and two new cuts, I manage to sink my teeth into a previous wound and the cat yowls, thrashing and throwing me off before turning. In the same moment Spottedsky chases off her opponent and Mistystar fells hers with a well-placed swipe.
"Thank you." The leader mews to me as the cats fade into mist.
"You're welcome," I reply, trying to smile.
Mistystar eyebrows furrow at me as she mews, "May I ask your name?"
"I'm Mosslight, and that's my sister Spottedsky." I mew nodding to her.
"I-I shall have to inform Midnightstar of your courageous acts…" she mews at last, still frowning with a measure of confusion.
"Oh thanks!" I mew my pelt heating at the compliment, "But it's not really necess–" I don't get to finish because a large dark tabby stalks into our small group. Mistystar tenses and waves of hate suddenly ignite inside of me as I realize I am looking at Tigerstar.
"There you are!" He mews lazily to Mistystar, "I've been looking everywhere for you!"
Mistystar growls in response, showing her teeth.
"Tell me, how's the Clan doing?" Mistystar tenses and I start to growl.
He looks at me in shock and mews, "But this is one of Midnightstar's! How interesting…." He mews dangerously as my fur fluffs up. "Wait a moment…" his voice trails off as he looks at me, "I know you… the kit… hmmm."
I chance a glance at Mistystar and my sister and see that they look as confused as I.
"Well no matter," Tigerstar decides with a shrug, "I shall enjoy all of your deaths."
It takes him a split second to leap at Mistystar, but she reacts just as fast. They become blurs as they leap through the night, Spottedsky and I trailing, but afraid to jump into the fight and be more of a hindrance than help.
Then Mistystar stumbles, and Tigerstar pins her, he laughs softly and mews, "How many lives do you have my leader?"
Mistystar lunges up and manages to knock him off, but his claws have left deep wounds in her pelt and blood leaks from them as she fights. They continue to grapple and then Mistystar uses a move that I've seen Midnightstar pull off dozens of time, a spin where the hind paw slaps the opponent's face. But Mistystar is just a second too slow and Tigerstar catches her paw, throwing her to the ground and slashing at her throat.
Mistystar's body stills and is enveloped by a large glow, so I assume she's not on her last life, and I fly at Tigerstar before he can try to finish her. Slashing hard I fight, though I fear I have as much effect as a gnat.
He laughs deeply and mews, "Fight little warrior, fight death, come and welcome it."
Snarling in anger, I leave a deep gash on his shoulder, and spring back, feeling relief flood into me as Spottedsky joins me. Tigerstar's eyes narrow as he takes us seriously, and suddenly I am fighting on defense, and it's all I can do to remain alive.
"My turn girls." Mistystar mews as she suddenly stands behind me. I dodge to one side as Mistystar leaps, all her wounds healed, and drives Tigerstar back. His face twists in anger as he snarls, throwing out a huge paw that Mistystar ducks under.
"I don't have time for this!" Tigerstar bellows and throws Mistystar away, turning and running back to the forest.
"Midnightstar…" I whimper softly and Spottedsky nods.
"We have to warn her." My sister hisses.
"She knows, girls." Mistystar mews wearily, "She has always known."
"I have to try!" I mew, and with that I race into the forest, my sister at my side, in a desperate search for our leader.
*Cloudcatcher*
Lighting forks the air where we fight, in the tree line right before the forest gives way to the moor. More RiverClan cats have arrived, soaking after having swum to the island and then to here, helping defend territory that is not theirs.
It's all of ours.
I try to focus as I fight next to Cloudylight, my old friend snarling and frowning as he batters the Dark Forest she-cat. I'm thankful for the stop with Snakesayer, for while my wounds ache, they no longer sting with the fire of a thousand suns.
I think about the apprentices and the elders, hoping they made it off the island safely as I strain my ears for scraps of news from amidst the fighting pairs.
The dark red she-cat I'm fighting is snarling at me, and she trips when I force her back toward the tree roots. Her face twists in anger as she hisses and springs, but I roll back, battering her stomach with my hind paws and she screams as I throw her off. I pin her, but a loud growl, one of the wolves distracts me. Snarling in pain as the cat bites me, I spring off her and watch her disappear in the direction of the moor.
Looking around I spot Cloudylight falling and leap closer, pulling the she-cat off of him by her scruff. I fling her into the fray and run to my friend, helping him up.
"Did you see what happened?" he asks, panting breathlessly. I shake my head and he frowns in annoyance. "We need to know what's going on."
"Chaos." I reply with a bitter laugh, thinking it a wonder the twolegs haven't heard us by now.
"How long have we been fighting? How long will it go on?" Cloudylight asks, looking around, probably for Tinysun, but our siblings are gone.
"I don't know…" I reply, sighing heavily, "it has to have been hours…"
Night swaths us but Lightingstorm's storm provides some light. Looking around I search desperately for familiar faces, for my mentor, or parents, or siblings. But I just see a mass of disjointed pelts and can make out no faces.
"I don't know how much longer I can do this." Cloudylight admits in a low voice, his eyes as serious as I've ever seen, "I'm starving and everything hurts, I hardly have any energy."
Nodding in agreement I look around and see a torn up bush. I hobble toward it and find a nest of small mice that must have been killed by a rampaging fight. "Here," I mew tossing some mice to Cloudylight, "Eat up."
We scarf the meal down and I can feel energy travailing slowly through my body, replenishing my weakness. Suddenly, a Dark Forest cat leaps out of the fray and I stiffen as it turns to me. Its dark fur is spikey; and it surveys me with mingled surprise and confusion.
"Snowfur…" he mutters.
"What?" I snarl, pulling my teeth back and I slip down into a crouch.
"You have your mother's eyes." The cat mews and I feel my world rock beneath me.
"What?" I demand and he laughs lightly.
"She's still alive boy, at least she was the last time I saw her." He turns away from me, looking out over the fighting cats, at something I can't see, "I was her mate way back when. But I wouldn't expect you to understand that. No, you… are irrelevant. We had a son… he looked like you, I must admit…. he's been dead for a long time now. It was his fault, he was weak. Are you weak boy?" The cat asks, his eyes snapping back to me.
"Not in the slightest!" I snarl as my claws dig into the earth.
"Good. I shall like to have a real fight… these sniveling weaklings are no match for my grandeur. And you must be disposed of. Just another reason why she will not love me."
"I don't know what you're talking about." I growl angrily, "But I'm done with you!"
I spring and realize this cat wasn't bragging. He's the most skilled fighter I've faced, and right from the off he tries to go for my throat, and only a desperate roll saves my life. I hear a grunt and realize Cloudylight has joined the fight. I grin widely at my friend, happy for the help, and we get to work.
Even with two of us, the cat is more than our match, wickedly fast and skilled. I'm berating myself for any second my mind may have wandered in battle training. Jumping away to avoid his claws I turn and wait for him to come, as the last second I spin and kick out, throwing him off balance, and Cloudylight's swift jump leaves him on the ground. We shred him quickly before he can regain his strength and jump off when he starts to stir.
I hear high pitched wailing, not of pain but of sorrow, but I cannot spare the time to look. Moments later the ground trembles again thanks to Snakesayer and fire licks through the forest behind us. The Dark Forest cats wail and our opponent's eyes narrow as he curses.
The cat grabs Cloudylight by the scruff, clawing at him and running away from the fire. I race after him, leaping and clawing at his face so he will release his hold on Cloudylight.
We've run into a group of our friends, but they're all fighting their own desperate battles. When Cloudylight tries to rise I yell at him to stay back. I see the anger that flashes in his eyes but he remains down.
The cat smirks and mews, "As it should be. I expect your mother would want you to die with honor, not whimpering behind a more skilled friend."
"Shut up!" I bellow, hating him even more every time he mentions my mother.
The cat smirks and mews, "My name is Thistleclaw, and who shall I be killing tonight?"
"My name is Cloudcatcher, and I am going to kill you!" I snarl, and I mean it, even if it kills me, I'm vowing to kill this cat.
Thistleclaw laughs long and hard before he darts at me. Shooting up, I thrust out my paws, catching his head and pressing down on his shoulder to knock him over. I avoid his claws, leaping away and turning as he runs at me, springing over him, and turning again I leap onto his back and claw him before he throws me off. Scrambling to my feet, I ignore the new aches and pains of my body, hissing and spitting.
Thistleclaw approaches me slowly, weighing my skill as we start to circle. "You cannot win little cat. We have more cats than you can hardly imagine. Even now, reinforcements are arriving.
Looking around in horror, I see that he is right, new Dark Forest warriors, fresh and strong are appearing every few foxlengths and the sounds of battle increase as they bear down upon the defenders of the Clans. I swallow heavily and look back to him, where he stands smirking.
"We will win. Because good triumphs over evil, light always vanquishes dark, and in the end chaos always falls." I mew, trying to inject as much confidence into my voice as I can.
"Oh you think so, do you?"
Springing like a snake he darts toward me and I leap back, we battle again with even greater ferocity, and it's all I can to do keep myself from getting shredded. Then, while I'm defending against his claws, Thistleclaw lunges forward and bites my face, cause me to yowl and stagger in pain. He pushes me down easily and I hit the ground hard, throwing my claws out, determined to kill him with my last breath.
But then I'm being dragged away as another shields me, as another crumples, and I see my sister stagger in horror as Thistleclaw laughs and vanishes. I spring up and run to her, the deep gash in Olwpaw's side already gushing blood. Tinysun whimpers as he tries to stem the torrent with his paws and my mind spins revoltingly, remembering the horror of the stories of Fallensnow's almost-death.
"No!" I gasp hoarsely, "Snakesayer, Snakesayer!"
Cloudylight drags my sister up and Tinysun helps support her as I clear a path for us, snarling, feeling like a demon, ready to murderer anyone who comes to close to my sister.
"Hang in there Owlswoop," I gasp as we stagger closer to where Snakesayer stands, amidst dozens of wounded.
He limps to us as fast as he can, and I see that his eyes are already full of tears and I wonder how many he has had to bring back tonight.
"Oh Owlswoop…" Snakesayer whispers softly as he looks at her, "Too brave to be smart in the end I suppose..." he mutters placing his head on the deep gash. Moments later a blinding light surrounds my sister, flashing from her wounds, and when it fades, she blinks up at us, whole and unblemished.
"Hey Cloudcatcher." She whispers and I grin down at her, tears falling from my eyes.
"Thanks for having my back." I murmur and she grins.
"You're my brother…"
I fight back a sob and bury my face in her shoulder shaking with relief. The absolute terror that had filled me is slowly ebbing away, but I can remember it all too well.
"Don't ever do that to me again." I mutter.
Owlswoop laughs and replies, quite cheekily, "Don't ever try to die again."
*Snakesayer*
I stagger away from the happy family reunion and look around in horror. Carnage is everywhere and my brain screams at my eyes, begging them to tell it that this sight isn't true. Another cat groans, and convinced that they are in no immediate danger, I shove herbs at them.
"Dawnpelt!" I snap and the former warrior races to me.
"What?" she gasps.
"Go and fetch more wounded." I order and I feel her shift next to me.
"Littlecloud and Kestrelflight are already out there Snakesayer. I need to stay here to help guard the wounded."
The shimmering forms of Meadowlace and my father nod reassuringly to me and I mew firmly, "Trust me, they shall be safe. We can handle it. But I am sure there are cats dying right now and we can prevent that."
"All right." Dawnpelt mews, but I see her deep frown as she leaves.
My body shakes with fatigue, from the legions of cats I've brought back from the brink of death or rescued from its embrace. Every time I see an overwhelming group of Dark Forest cats attacking a small group of Clan cats the earth disappears out from under their paws and they fall into deep fissures. Often, they can travel out of them, but not if I close the fissure over them.
That however takes time, which I have precious little of. Another cat staggers toward me, and Cloudylight and Cloudcatcher move to help them stumble to me.
"Wrenched shoulder, twisted paw." I mutter, "No immediate danger but you shouldn't be trying to fight anymore. You won't be able to stand and I'll wager you'd be dead before you could blink."
I lead the cat deeper into the group to where the herbs are and apply poultices quickly before I move back to the edge scanning the fighting. And then two cats burst from the forest, a dark tabby and a bright golden pelt. "Lionblaze…" I hiss and Owlswoop nods, her face contorting with fear.
"That's Hawkfrost." Another wounded cat mutters and many groan.
"Help me get closer." I instruct and Tinysun comes to help me walk. We move close to the pair as quickly as we can. Their fight is wicked and Lionblaze slams the Dark Forest cat to the ground, leaving deep gashes in his side.
Hawkfrost flips him off, and I see deep gouges in Lionblaze's stomach from Hawkfrost's claws. Lionblaze snarls attacks harder, and for a moment I cannot tell what is happening as they are merely a blur of pelts. Then Hawkfrost is yowling, backing away from the fight and disappearing somewhere else.
"Foxheart! Wimp! Come back and fight like a true warrior!" Lionblaze howls and I move quickly towards him. He's shaking from the blood loss, but he stands strong, refusing to back down.
"He's gone now Lionblaze and I need to treat you!"
Lionblaze looks at me almost blankly, but he nods in acquiescence, gasping suddenly in pain. He falls limply to the ground, groaning and I hiss, quickly allowing the tears of fear and pain that have been brimming in my eyes for hours to come in full force.
As usual, they gather along the life threatening wounds and flash with bright light for a moment, and when they disappear, no wounds remain.
"Thank you Snakesayer." Lionblaze mews, breathing heavily.
Another fighting pair crashes out of the forest, actually going into the water before they make their way back onto the shore. I gasp slightly, recognizing that dark pelt anywhere – it's Aunt Midnight.
The second cat I do not know but I see a WindClan she-cat snarl angrily at the sight of him and when Midnightstar throws him away, she creeps closer to him.
"What's wrong Tigerstar?" Midnightstar calls, tauntingly, "Sending the underlings to wear me down? Afraid to face me yourself?!"
The dark tabby appears from nowhere in the lake, walking along its surface to Midnightstar calmly.
"Hardly." Tigerstar mews coolly, "Breezepelt wanted his chance to fight you and he failed miserably as I knew he would. But it is good to indulge the followers sometimes, you know how it is."
I do not catch Midnightstar's reply, but suddenly they are fighting, two dark shapes in little light, flitting all around one another and I move closer to them, fearfully, wanting to help. Some other fights start up again, but just as many are spectators, and I see Lightingstorm abandoning his fight, and running towards me. We pace foxlengths away from the fight and Frozenfang joins us, his blue eye hard as he looks around, searching for a cat who might try to attack Midnightstar while she's vulnerable.
Then we hear a scream and I see the WindClan she-cat fall as the other black cat, Breezepelt, races back toward the fight. I move to help the fallen cat, but then turn back to my friends, "He's going to attack her."
"Yes." Lightingstorm mews furiously.
"We're going to stop him." I reply calmly, "But I need to help the cat he hurt, so follow my lead."
The ground beneath the cat suddenly vanishes, and Frozenfang freezes him expertly to keep him from traveling away while Lightingstorm looks at him, face hard in rage as the cat starts to fall, claws still out, inches away from Midnightstar. Just as he falls into the abyss, lighting flashes down with a deafening clap and I see it hit, the cat dissolving into darkness.
There is no time for words and I race to the WindClan cat. She is a light brown tabby, and her blue eyes are half-way closed as I bend over her, allowing tears to fall. Once the light has faded, she jerks up, gasping fearfully at me, and relaxing when she recognizes me as a medicine cat.
"Breezepelt?" She whispers, terror in her voice.
"Gone." I mew briskly and she relaxes slightly.
"Are you certain?" She questions softly.
"Yes, I saw it. He will not be coming back." I mew firmly.
"Then we are finally safe…" She whispers and her body relaxes, and I almost point out the irony of safe in the middle of a war, but I just nod curtly and make my way back to my makeshift medicine den.
For StarClan knows how long I loose myself in the wounded once more, moving as fast as I can, sometimes with Littlecloud, Kestrelflight, Mothwing, Willowshine, or Dawnpelt to help me. And then as the sky turns a cool gray, I hear Meadowlace's gasp and my father's growl.
I whip around to an awful sight, and the ground shakes tremors beneath me from my fury.
How was it? I hope it wasn't too confusing, the timeline is a little messed up but unless I say otherwise, each point of view should be in roughly chronological order.
Okay Midnight's and Raven's kits pov will be tomorrow and then we have the other Clans, the wolves/owls, the end of the battle and the epilogue! Can you believe the series almost done? Whoa nostalgia!;)
"That is the fear: I have lost something important, and I cannot find it, and I need it. It is fear like if someone lost his glasses and went to the glasses store and they told him that the world had run out of glasses and he would just have to do without." ~Miles "Pudge" Halter, Looking for Alaska, by John Green
So there are many wonderful philosophical ramblings in Looking for Alaska, and when I was paging through it for a quote the other day, this is one I found.
Until tomorrow! Review please.
