Chapter 36 – Betrayal

Renesmee

I raced through the woods, my eyes seeing everything, and my body moving quickly and efficiently in response. I chased Kent, the two of us moving faster and quieter than any human ever could. I avoided almost every stick, every twig, and every leaf that could rustle because of my presence. We reached the base later than I thought we would. It was farther into the nearby woods than I had ever traveled before, even the hunting lodges didn't go this far.

Our mission was to gather information, something we could use to stop these adversaries from hurting the ones I cared about. Obviously Kent knew more than I did, but he was keeping pretty closed lipped about anything besides this location. As we approached I could hear a man talking then shouting. We came into view and a man stood with his back to our position. He was yelling at a larger man holding a teenage boy. "Carefully put him in the hold with the others, we will need them later."

I couldn't believe it, they had human prisoners.

Another thing I found completely stunning was that everyone else I could see was also human. Every person who walked around, loading containers and people into large military-like vehicles, they were all human.

They continued loading crates, some smelled like food, others weapons. Where were they going? What was their plan?

Maybe my family had the right idea, facing this advisory head on wasn't going to be an option. They looked like a small army, fully loaded with information and supplies. This was every vampire's worst fear, humans hunting them. Not only that, this was an organized vampire hunting group. And my family was the target. This was dangerous for all of us, even for Jacob with an entire pack or two of wolves behind him.

The thought of Jacob sent a warm feeling shooting through me, in just a few moments I would see him again.

I had what I needed, information. My photographic memory could help me figure out who some of these people are. We could follow their movements, lure them out into the open on our terms. All I had to do was go get Jacob and run.

I turned to leave, it was time to find Jacob and my family. It was time to make everything right.

Suddenly strong arms wrapped around me and pinned me in place.

"Kent?" I whispered before his hand came up and covered my mouth.

"I'm sorry." He whispered back before griping me even tighter and pushing us into the clearing.

"Kent" The man who was facing away from us turned around and acknowledged him as we entered the clearing.

"Where is Spotswood?"

"In his office. I see you brought the girl, he'll be very happy to see you." The man grinned at me, something about him felt off, wrong.

I struggled against Kent as he pushed us toward what looked to be bunker doors, but it was no use. He was far stronger than I gave him credit for. I sent images into his head, anything I thought might slow him down. Every scary move I had ever seen was shoved into his mind at once. He faltered for a second then got his bearings and continued down the stairs and into a hallway.

"My life is much darker than anything you could ever try to put in my head." He finally whispered. "I really am sorry it had to be this way love, you'll understand eventually."

I tried to shove my body away from him again but his hold never faltered. Finally we entered into a luxurious looking office, something I never would have pictured in a bunker like this.

A vampire sat behind the desk, looking over paperwork. He stood as we entered, a sadistic smile crossing his face. I recognized him from Milly's memories, it was the vampire hunter Alexander Spotswood. Only now he was a vampire himself, and judging from his bright red eyes he wasn't opposed to drinking human blood.

"I see you held up your end of the bargain." He grinned at Kent.

"I'm a man of my word." Kent replied.

Alexander nodded. "You may release her now."

The second Kent let me go I made a break for the door we had entered. I was fast but the moment it was within reach an overwhelming heat engulfed my body and I unwillingly fell to the ground. The pain was unbearable and I literally felt like I was being cooked alive from the inside. A scream escaped my lips as I turned to look at my captures. "You traitor!" I shouted at Kent as darkness began to cloud my vision. I tried not to black out as my body shook with pain. Ultimately I was unsuccessful and when unconsciousness finally overtook me I was simply glad to be rid of the heat.
