Present: (Six Months from Previous Chapter)

Caroline burst through the doors of Damon's chambers, and fire flashed in her eyes, causing the men in the room to step back.

"He was supposed to be safe!" She shouted, glaring at each of the men.

Finn sighed, and stepped closer to her, trying to calm her down with a touch of his hand, but she shrugged him off.

"How the hell could this have happened?" She asked, in a demanding tone.

Damon sighed, and glanced at Finn, who closed his eyes. "I don't know." He replied, as the door opened once again, and the Prosecutor came in with a look of fury on her face as well.

"Where is he?" She asked, firmly.

Caroline rolled her eyes, and turned her back to the woman. "I want to see him." She replied, glaring at Damon, who sighed.

The Prosecutor shook her head. "She's not allowed to see him." She replied, pointing at Caroline.

Caroline scoffed, and folded her arms over her chest. "Look here, I don't know who you are, or who you think you are trying to impress by coming in here and giving orders, but let me make this perfectly clear," Caroline began, stepping towards the Prosecutor. "Fuck off."

The Prosecutor shook her head. "Threats won't work, Marshal." She replied, causing Caroline to smile for a brief moment.

"Caroline," Finn whispered, but Caroline ignored him.

"How did you get this job anyway? What happened to the other guy?" Caroline asked, watching Elena swallow hard.

"He's been dismissed. I don't know why." She answered, shakily.

"More like, he was threatened." Caroline speculated, glancing at Damon. "I want to see him, and," She paused, glaring at the Prosecutor. "Don't you tell me that I can't." She replied, glancing at Finn. "I have every right to see him." She added, firmly.

"What makes you think that you can see him, Marshal?" Elena remarked, folding her arms over her chest. "You arrested him, and you are a witness, no matter what the counselor says." She added, with a smirk on her lips.

Caroline closed her eyes, and opened them to find Damon shaking his head, but she realized he was shaking it at Elena, not at her. "Let me make this perfectly clear, Prosecutor Gilbert," She began, lifting her chin higher. "I have every right to see him because," She paused, when a throat cleared behind her.

She turned her head to glare at Damon, who swallowed, and closed his eyes.

"Let me make this perfectly clear, Marshal," Elena began, stepping forward. "You can't see him because you are the arresting officer, and because he is a criminal on trial." She replied, smiling in satisfaction.

Caroline's eyes flashed, causing Finn to groan behind her. "Where is he?" She demanded, turning to Damon.

"You can't tell her, Your Honor." Elena cried, stepping forward.

Caroline glared at Damon, and he saw she had had enough. The attempt on Klaus' life had pushed her over the edge, and he knew she didn't care about the plan or what happened next. Everything had changed when Klaus had been shot in his holding cell after Finn had left, and the guard had been knocked out.

He sighed and reached behind him for his phone, and dialed the number. "April, bring the file in please. Thank you." He replied, placing the phone on the hook.

"You can't do this!" Elena cried, glancing at Caroline.

Caroline turned to face the brunette head on, and Damon shook his head in preparation for what he knew was going to be a huge scene. "You said that I can't see him, or even know if he's alright. Well, let me tell you something, Ms. Prosecutor," She began, glancing at Finn, who clamped his eyes shut. "I have every right to see him, and if you had bothered to look at the document in Finn's hands at the trial, you would know why." She replied, getting stronger with each word she spat out.

Elena swallowed, and glanced at Finn, who held out the document he had taken from his briefcase. Taking it in her hand, she glanced at the words, and swallowed hard. "This, this is…" She trailed off, feeling words would be useless.

"That's right." Caroline spat out, lifting her head higher. "Niklaus Mikaelson is my husband." She stated, proudly.

He had been shot before. Hell, he had been stabbed and tortured, but this cut the cake. Shot in a secured facility.

Now, he had heard it all. Klaus groaned as the scalpel dug into his back. He was so grateful that he had seen the gun when it came through the door, and had time to duck behind the overturned cot.

He slammed his fists on the table in front of him, and cursed loudly.

"Hold steady, Klaus, I've almost got it." Stefan replied, digging into Klaus' back.

Klaus rolled his eyes, and shook his head. "Why couldn't Meredith come?" He asked, glancing over his shoulder.

"Awe, come on, Klaus, you know why." Stefan remarked, frowning as he felt the bullet, and Klaus groaned.

"Yeah, I know." Klaus groaned, clenching his teeth together. "And this is supposed to be my protection?!" He shouted, shaking his head, trying to focus on the anger instead of the pain. "Bloody imbeciles couldn't protect a turtle if they needed to." He growled out, causing Stefan to chuckle at his words.

"You knew this might happen, Klaus." Stefan stated, shaking his head while pulling the bullet out of Klaus' back.

Klaus growled, and slammed his fist on the table. "I know, Stefan, but God help me, if you say, I told you so…" He stated, trailing off, shaking his head.

Stefan rolled his eyes as he picked up a needle and thread. "I wasn't going to say it." He stated, lying.

"Liar." Klaus growled, bowing his head.

Stefan chuckled, and began to sew the wound up. "Caroline is going to have a fit." He muttered, sobering up.

Klaus groaned, and shook his head. "She'll kill me." He muttered, shaking his head.

"Hey, you married her, and it was your idea." Stefan stated, trying to keep from laughing.

Klaus smiled, and looked down at his left hand, before he had gotten arrested, he had removed the wedding band, and in its place, he had tattooed the symbol for love on his finger, and had done the same to Caroline. It was a simple gesture, but it meant so much to the both of them. "Yeah, I did." He replied, ignoring the pain in his shoulder.

"Smartest thing you ever did." Stefan muttered, finishing up.

Klaus rolled his eyes. "Are you done criticizing my life and decisions?" He stated, turning around to face his friend.

Stefan sighed, and pretended to think about the answer. "Not by a long shot, but for the moment, I will." He answered, smiling.

Klaus shook his head, and moved around the small place, they called a safe house. "Think, they'll tell her?" He asked, moving to sit down on a wooden chair next to the small table.

Stefan glared at him, and leaned against the wall. "It's Caroline, Klaus." He began, shaking his head. "You know they will." He added, watching Klaus smile. "What about Joey?" He asked, lightly.

Klaus' smile faded from his face. "He's safe." Klaus answered, firmly. "That's all you need to know." He added, looking away from his friend.

Stefan nodded, and sighed. "As long as he's safe."

Klaus nodded, and leaned gingerly back in the chair. "He was our priority when he planned it all out." He stated, absently.

Stefan nodded, and perked up when he heard a car pull up to the front of the house. He pulled out the gun from his halter, and held it firmly in his hands, before walking to the front door. He sighed, when the Marshals outside, lowered their weapons, and stepped aside, revealing a furious blonde Marshal.

"Klaus, your wife is here." He stated, firmly.

He knew if he followed behind her, she would lead him to the place they kept him. He just knew it, as he knew he couldn't trust that fool of a prosecutor to give him the details.

Enzo parked a few miles away from the cabin, and pulled out his Win-Mag sniper rifle, before trekking through the woods.

This time he would not miss.

Klaus frowned as he came face to face with his fury filled wife.

"You damned bastard!" She hollered, raising her hand to slap him, but he caught her hand with his. "How dare you get shot?!" She added, struggling to get free from his grasp.

Stefan shook his head, and moved to leave the couple alone with their domestic squabble.

"Love, it was not my intention to get shot." He tried to reason, but she shook her head.

"You knew it was a possibility, Klaus!" She shouted, glaring at him. "God! Married for six months and you get yourself shot!" She shouted, finally breaking free from his grasp. "Some husband I married." She added, moving away from him.

Klaus sighed, and moved to follow her. "Caroline, we knew that the threat was still present, which is why I turned myself in, to draw him out." He replied, grasping her upper arms from behind.

"Yeah, and risking making me a widow, and Joey and our unborn child fatherless." She whispered, bowing her head.

Klaus sighed, and slowly turned her around to look into her eyes. "Caroline, I made you a promise that nothing would happen to you or our children, and if that means putting my life on the line, then that's what I'll do." He replied, watching her shake her head.

"You stubborn, mule headed, jack-assed of a man," She ranted, slamming her hands against his chest. "What good is vowing to stay together for the rest of our lives if you constantly risk yours?" She asked, shaking her head, and Klaus finally read the fear in her eyes.

"This was the only way, love, and you know it." He whispered, holding her eyes.

She bowed her head, and placed her left hand on her stomach. "That scare did wonders for Junior here." She stated, after a moment.

Klaus smiled, softly, and placed his right hand on her stomach. "You should be resting, Caroline." He whispered, as her hand caught his.

"I'll rest when your safe, Klaus." She stated, sighing. "The prosecutor knows now." She added, stepping back, to look out the window.

"We knew she would find out." Klaus remarked, coming up behind her, wrapping his arms around her body.

Caroline smiled, and nodded, leaning back against his chest. "Her case is in shambles now." She stated, with pride. "Turns out the only witness she had worth getting on the stand is married to the accused, and she can't force me to testify." She remarked, feeling Klaus kiss her temple. "Not that she would try, especially since I practically told her to shove it in Damon's chambers this morning." She added, feeling him chuckle behind her.

"You always did have a mouth on you, love." He whispered, lowly, kissing her temple.

She rolled her eyes, and turned around in his arms to look into his eyes. "I thought you loved me being feisty." She remarked, lightly.

Klaus smirked, and searched her eyes. "I love everything, Caroline, everything about you." He whispered, kissing her lips, softly.

She moaned as the kiss deepened, and when they pulled apart, she placed her head on his chest. "He won't stop, you know." She whispered, after a moment.

Klaus sighed, and secured her to his person. "I know." He replied, kissing the top of her head.

"Klaus, I sent my resignation papers to my boss a few days ago." She replied, pulling back to look at him. "And I requested amnesty for you and the family due to the evidence you gave." She added, searching his eyes.

Klaus smiled, and nodded. "Think they'll give it." He wondered, tilting his head to the side.

She shrugged her shoulders. "My contact at the office said my boss wasn't too thrilled about it, but he had no choice." She replied, her brow furrowing when Klaus' eyes became dark. "Nik…"

"Caroline, run to the back. GO!" He shouted, pushing her ahead of him, just in time as bullets began to ricochet through the windows and around them.

Caroline ran until she made it to the wall, and reached for Klaus' hand, only to find him not behind her. "KLAUS!"

Stefan slammed next to her, and frowned as he squatted down. Crawling past her, he made it to where Klaus was hold up, and handed him a .9 mm handgun. "Move, quickly." Stefan ordered, as Klaus crawled in front of him, bullets continuing to rain down around them.

Caroline sighed with relief as Klaus came into view, and she bent down, carefully, to help him up. Hugging him tightly against her for a moment, she held onto his hand, as they ran quickly to the back door, Stefan just a foot behind them.

"Run!" Stefan ordered, just as an explosion could be heard behind them.

Just as they made it to the woods behind them, a few Marshals surrounded them for protection, and guided them to two vehicles, and they turned to find the safe house explode.

"He found us." Caroline whispered, leaning against her husband.

Klaus frowned, and swallowed, hard. Anger raged within him, but he couldn't act on it, not here, not now, so instead, he held his wife closer to him, and brushed the dirt and sweat from his face.

"Let's move, sir."

Klaus nodded, and helped Caroline into the vehicle, and climbed in after her, with only one thought on his mind.

Keep Caroline and their children safe, and kill Enzo, slowly.

Please be kind!

Awe, birthdays are a wonderful thing! I was going to end with a cliffhanger, but I decided to be kind today! :)

Anyway, I'm going to try to get the next chapter up and going by this weekend, or sooner, but not making promises! I hope you all enjoy this!

Next Chapter will be five months ago. I'm sorry for the confusion this may bring.
